I love how off the rails you go when talking about Norse mythology. Also, would it be wrong to compare to the planescape in RWD? All the different planes, separated but also mixing together, then pocket planes like Hira's house in Sigil and MX-IM's tower in Mechanis?
I think overall it's a fine comparison, but I don't think you travel between worlds via a portal like you would in Planescape. I think it's more that if you walk for long enough, and if you have the right circumstances (e.g. being a god; being dead; etc.), you'll end up in another world. And probably also ducking into caves or deep woods or whatever.
But a decent into madness is the best kind of decent!! 🤪
