Thanks to the comments for letting me know that the director had a comedy background. It reminds me of Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) who used to be in the comedy series The Whitest Kids U Know. I also didn't know that the lead actor Michael Johnston was in the TV series Teen Wolf. I knew he looked familiar.

I re-watched the final scene where Bear was alone in the bathroom and I guess I wasn't really paying close enough attention the first time I watched. Bear was trying to make himself vomit. If he had been given more time to vomit, we could have had a very different ending. Not a happy ending; it would be two psychopaths in love, but a different ending.

Thank you so much for sharing this for free. I highly suggest to watch some of Curry Barker's horror shorts especially Milk & Serial and The Chair. He also does comedy skits with the actor who plays Ian. When I saw this in the theater, the guy next to me literally jumped out of his seat when Nikki killed Sarah. It was seriously fun to watch this in the theater with a bunch of people. I tend to go to the movies later at night during the week so it's rare to actually have a full theater.

The thing about the simplicity and predictability that was SO well done is that it felt like that was really intentional. It laid things out really clearly for things that were going to come up, but it *added* to the anticipation instead of removed it, because we could predict something happening but NOT predict what the response would be or how it would play out. Like the cat, we thought would come back somehow, but i certainly did not expect it as the sandwich. The drinking game having a kiss-dare causing conflict, but not knowing how it would happen. The “boys night” suggestion and the immediate interrupt. The chat with Sarah in the car that kept showing that angle out the window throughout. All that built the tension. Maybe my favorite example is the scene where he’s sleeping and it’s suspenseful and it’s clear there’s some kind of scare coming, she screamed “why don’t you love me” waking him… and then she comes in with the flowers covering her face… I absolutely NEVER could have predicted that one. They did such an interesting balance where you *kind of* know what’s coming… but you don’t know what’s coming. Honestly masterclass from this debut director, I am as excited to see what they come up with next as I was to see what Peele did after seeing Get Out the first time (which I think also had some influence here if we can add that to the list). I still agree that comedians make the best horror because they understand timing and building suspense and story so well.
