Violet doesn't want to marry again. Her love for Lord Anderson is not as strong as her love for Edmund. She gave up the freedom of being a carefree girl in order to marry Edmund and she doesn't want to do that again. She wants to find the carefree girl she used to be; she wasn't necessarily wild as we would term it but for the time of the setting of the series. Violet pretty much asked Marcus to be her mistress (whatever the male term may be -- paramore maybe?) sort of like Benedict did with Sophie. If she marries, whatever she has becomes her husband's and he has control over her life. Since she is a widow, she can have a paramore without the censure of society as long as she's discreet. Marcus obviously wants the certainty of marriage. They want different things.
