Planning a Halloween Session? Start Beneath the Graveyard.

Halloween is just around the corner, so it felt like a good time to dig up a couple of spooky maps from the library.

So here is a small horror-ready combo from the library: a haunted graveyard on the surface, and something much worse waiting below it.

Graveyard on the Hill

It starts with a road leading uphill through crooked trees, weathered gravestones, and a chapel that has been locked for far too long.

Maybe the dead have started leaving their graves. Maybe someone has been seen carrying lanterns between the tombstones after midnight. Or maybe the party is simply looking for a missing grave robber who went into the cemetery three nights ago and never came back.

Graveyard on the Hill works beautifully as the opening scene: investigation, tense roleplay, a fight among the graves, or that slow moment when the players realise that the chapel is not the destination. It is the entrance.

Day, dusk, and night variants make it easy to begin with a normal-looking cemetery and slowly turn the mood darker as the session goes on.

The Crypt and Cave

Below the chapel lies a network of old crypts, narrow tunnels, forgotten chambers, underground rivers, strange statues, and just enough coloured light to make everyone wonder whether they should really be touching anything.

The Crypt and Cave is where the one-shot can turn into a proper descent. The party might be hunting a necromancer, searching for a cursed relic, following the trail of a missing priest, or trying to stop something that has already begun to wake up beneath the hill.

The multiple areas let you build the tension gradually: first the sealed crypt, then the deeper chambers, then the cave system where the dead are no longer the only thing moving in the dark.

A quick Halloween one-shot idea

The village cemetery keeper has vanished, and every grave in the oldest section of the hill has been opened from the inside.

The party investigates the graveyard after sunset, finds strange symbols carved into the chapel floor, and discovers a passage leading into the crypt below. Deep underground, a forgotten cult is trying to awaken an ancient spirit bound beneath the cave system.

The ritual is almost complete.

The only question is whether the party reaches the final chamber before the thing beneath the hill remembers its name.

Both packs include animated and static versions, so they are ready for VTTs, TV tables, projectors, and a properly atmospheric Halloween night.

Cheers!
