Case 354: The Gilgo Beach Serial Killings (Part 1/2)

In the late 2000s, women started going missing after travelling to Long Island, New York. Initially, their disappearances were only noticed by their families, but when a fifth victim named Shannan Gilbert went missing on May 1 2010, the search for her would reveal a series of horrific crimes…

Thank you for further humanizing the victims and explaining how they got into sex work 🙏

Long Island in the house!

Of all the men mentioned in this episode, Blue is the only one I’d trust. The number of people who exploited, dismissed, and dehumanised these young women throughout their lives is staggering.

In fairness they exploited themselves by choosing the line of work they did. I don't condone murder and I find individuals like this killer to be sadistic in the worst way however each one of these ladies would be alive had they chosen not to be prostitutes

Where did part 2 go? I listened to part 1 & could have sworn there was a part 2 posted? Can’t find it now.

Great writing/storytelling and accompanying score! Told in this way, it's just terribly obvious how people wanted to collect a salary/pension but do nothing for it. There's not supposed to be tiers of those being protected or served, right? Right??

When I did sex work, it was still possible to advertise via Craigslist Personals. I desperately needed lots of money quickly and did it for a while until I realized that men who ignored my request of "bring a condom" could also very easily ignore my request of "don't murder me." Also the money wasn't even that good. (and this is gonna sound so morbid but it was kind of exciting to be a true crime fan following the LISK case as it happened.)

I went on two dates with Rex (he used a fake name) back in October 2011. Very weird guy and the crazy thing is, one of my friends who is a lawyer was CERTAIN he was the Gilgo Beach killer and urged me to contact law enforcement. I thought she was overreacting so imagine my shock and horror when another friend messaged me the day he was caught. I spent that whole day throwing up, I was so sick over it. I still have a couple emails from him (and yes, I sent everything to the FBI immediately)

Oh my, I wasn't expecting this. I'm in Brooklyn, NY, so this is somewhat local for me. I remember this case a few years ago, before it was solved. It was after were looking for Shannon gilbert and found a couple of the bodies and it started appearing in the paper that there might be a serial killer operating in long Island. Note: Shannon Gilbert's mother was later killed by her other daughter, who was disturbed. There is actually body cam footage on EWU of the police investigating the murder, Mary Gilbert's husband discovered her and is distraught in the footage, poor man, and then the police talk to her daughter who confesses. That family has gone through a lot. Shannon's mother was the one who pushed for the police to search for her.

Yes! Plus I love the prose of all Casefile's writers, but Erin might just be my favourite..
