Q&A time

Hi friends!

It came to my attention I have not done a Q&A in a while so I wanted to give you all the place to ask me any questions you may have!

Can be story related, Patreon, art & process, tools I use, current & future projects or about me if you’re curious haha anything is on the table!

I will try to answer them all as promptly as possible, sometimes I get so distracted I totally forget to reply to people when I mean to, but I will try my best to respond to all of you.

That being said there is no time limit for this post, so if you have a question a week from now don’t hesitate to ask.

Just comment below and let me know your questions!

Do you have any tips for getting better at drawing hands? I feel like I'm destined to draw chopped sausage fingers forever.

ohhh hands are hard! I can try to explain how I got better at them, but maybe I could do small drawing tutorials for you guys in the future! I like making my hands pretty blocky at first, because hands just look so angular to me and it feel like it's much easier to get lost in drawing organic curves rather than geometric forms. So I basically will make everything look like squares and long rectangles for the fingers, and even the finger tips become little cubes. Disney's atlantis has a great example of this style. I also studied hands from the artstyle iron giant because I love the look of the fingers going from thin at the base to thicker at the finger tips, which might help against the sausage finger look! I don't know if that helps, but maybe a more angular take will help look a little less sausage-ey lol

UMUM. I'm so sorry if you've been asked this before, but was your artstyle and/or the types of colors you use influenced by anything in particular? Like, say, Ghibli Studios or a specific artist? And if you HAVE answered that question before, then, when doodling a character in a scene, would you say that it's easier to doodle the character first, or the background first? Or maybe some secret c option that I haven't considered..?

No worries, I'm happy to answer! My artstyle is influenced by an amalgamation of other styles, starting with magical girl anime like sailor moon and then later on more western style animation like iron giant. but then I swung back towards anime but more shonen like one piece and DBZ lol so I can't point to one specific style but I tend to take little pieces from everything I find aesthetically pleasing. Colors are even harder to place since I am not confident in my coloring. I tend to like referencing older artwork that I like in order to create color palettes! I tend to start with character first over background, only because I'm way more confident in my figures than BG's lol but if the BG is simple enough I will start with that. I think it's probably better to start with BG or at least the basic layout first then place the characters... but I don't follow a strict process with that since I am still learning how to do backgrounds well ;_;

m
mroddestball · August 6, 2026

Ohhh this is hard!! I would say of all time... Merlin BBC is probably my favorite. It was just so foundational for me for my stories lol. Favorite movie ... for now I will say Kiki's delivery service! So nostalgic and feel good. And my current favorite video game... I've been playing Mass Effect from the suggestion of my partner since it's super Star Trek inspired and I've been having a really fun time with it!!

What is the setting your characters are in?

m
mroddestball · July 31, 2026

good question! The canonical setting is very high fantasy, low tech world. The visual design of everything is heavily influenced by post-colonial Mexico. There's no cars but there are trains, and no tvs or phones but there are radios. I hope this answers your question, I can always go into more detail!

1- What is your favorite thing to draw that's not people? 2- Do you have any plans for other AUs for the boys? (Idk, but I think it'd be cute to see them as like, cheesy mobsters lol) 3- What's your favorite medium to use?

m
mroddestball · July 31, 2026

1. This is such a hard one because I am so bad, I really don't like drawing anything but people (i'm working on it lol) I would say right now, I do like drawing abstract patterns and designs, like borders and textiles. 2. I don't have anything specific at the moment but I'm always open to new ideas! Cheesy mobsters sounds so fun actually, I might explore that further 3. Traditional art will always have my heart, and I really love just a basic super soft 4B graphite pencil (I went through a whole pack every year in college) or a really smooth thick gel pen. Then to color I love alcohol markers, I have just been using them since I learned how to draw so its a nostalgic thing i think!

As a fellow curly once I saw your hair I was dying to know the products you use!!! Also, what drawing tablet did you start with vs. which one are you using now? Are there any recommendations/ words of caution etc. that you have for anyone looking to enter the digital art scene?

m
mroddestball · July 31, 2026

yeah of course!! I use the brand "not your mother's" Curl Talk line. I use the strong hold gel (its the one that is 5 not the 3) and the foaming mousse. I put the gel first then the mousse right after the shower when my hair is wet and let it air dry. My hair is really thick and prone to frizziness if I don't use enough product, but these work great for me without being insanely expensive! Oooh it's been so long but I believe the first tablet I had a was a tiny waccom tablet that was as big as a mouse pad and it did not have a screen, it was just a tablet. Right now I mostly use my iPad (Pro 6th gen) for everything, drawing & animating, and i use it as a second monitor when I use my desktop applications like TV Paint. Definitely a big investment but I prefer it over a desktop screen tablet like a Cintiq at the moment because I need the ability to take it anywhere plus there are some amazing animation apps on the Apple store! As for the digital art scene, YT tutorials are your best friend, go crazy with experimenting styles and colors, and even if it a sketch, don't be scared to post it if you want to, sometimes sketches do much better than the finished piece

What're the heights of your characters? Also, because it is summer, how do you stay cool? Any tips?

m
mroddestball · July 31, 2026

oooh yes! So far for Orion and the gang the heights are like this: Orion is 5'4" (162.5cm), Juniper is 5'2" (160cm), Rue is 5'10" (178cm), Rigel is 6'2" (188cm), Karia is 6'4" (193cm) and Will is 6'6" (198cm) Orion is for my short kings!! And as for staying cool... it's been pretty rough lol I don't have AC and my old house is horribly insulated so I try to manage the misery by opening ALL the windows and doors the whole day with the fans on, taking cold showers and not using heat to cook (so just salads and sandwhiches lol) summer is my favorite but this heat is testing my love

Question! how do you get your scans so crisp?

m
mroddestball · July 31, 2026

great question! I have been using the Canoscan LiDE 400 from canon for my sketchbook scans, but in the last post I used my Epson printer the Ecotank ET-8550 which is a VERY pricey printer but I realized it can scan up to 600 dpi which is double the resolution. But I reccomend the Canoscan because it's much more affordabe and does a great job!
