BackToTheSteamVR
Description
“Where we're going, we don't need OpenXR."
BackToTheSteamVR is a mod that restores Beat Saber back to its former native SteamVR (OpenVR) backend, after the game switched to an OpenXR-based VR system in version 1.29.4.
“What’s the point of doing that?”
If that’s your reaction, this mod may not be for you...
- Miss the old feel of the controls because the offsets and button mappings changed?
- Still unable to move on from 1.29.1 because the gameplay feels different?
- Want to use SteamVR overlays or tools like OVR Advanced Settings again?
If any of these sound familiar, give this mod a try.
Choosing the wrong OpenXR runtime can cause Beat Saber to launch with no display output or even crash entirely, whereas SteamVR does not suffer from these issues.
On my own setup, switching back to SteamVR also fixed several issues I occasionally experienced under OpenXR, such as:
- the floor position breaking after recentering
- swing-angle tracking occasionally failing (where tracking appears to fall back by one frame and the swing calculation stops there)
There is no configuration screen for this mod. Once installed, it is automatically enabled. To check whether Beat Saber is running under SteamVR or OpenXR, press the system menu button on the left controller: if the SteamVR menu opens, the game is running through SteamVR. (You may also notice that the pause button mapping changes.)
Valve Index Controllers
With SteamVR, the thumbsticks on Valve Index Controllers are not bound by default, so you will not be able to scroll song lists and other menus using the sticks. Please either select a community-shared controller binding from the SteamVR controller binding settings, or create your own binding by following the instructions on the page below.

Beat Saber 1.29.1 uses native SteamVR (not OpenXR), so this mod is not required.
