Dad Reacts to Green Day - American Idiot

i love this album sm 😭💖 I’ve always thought of Jesus of suburbia as the punk-rock Bohemian Rhapsody 😅
Mike Dirnt is the bass player. He’s been Billie’s best friend since at least middle school.
I’ve seen Green Day live probably 4 or 5 times. Absolutely killer show. They play for almost 3 hours and sound amazing the entire time. Their work pre-Idiot is awesome but I’d love to see you guys react to 21st Century Breakdown which followed Idiot. It feels like a direct continuation of the story and feeling. You see some more if it then on the albums Father of All and Saviors. Anyway, one of my all time faves.
Jesus of suburbia is the best song on here
Billie Joe updates the line “twenty years has gone so fast” in When September Ends when he plays live to how long his father has been gone. I’ve heard them play it twice that way and it made me cry both times.
American idiot was the first CD I owned that wasn't my parents music and legit think it shaped me as a kid in how I dressed, what I listened to and still means a huge amount over 20 years on. So many memories of being obsessed with this era of Green Day as an 8 year old. Shit my pants when I saw this video
Please do Third Eye Blinds debut album 🙏
Can't help but hear a lot of Billy Joe's style on Angles by The Strokes, I wander if there was an influence on Julian when he was messing around with his voice on that album.
that Boulevard guitar is totally from How Soon is Now
Fucking.. Banger
Black parade next 🤓
Check out Green Day’s Nimrod next! You guys will love it 🎶
As a Greenday fan in 2004 I hated this album when it came out. It was just too commercial and not as raw as what I was used to from them. The singles were sooo overplayed on the radio as well. But now with a bit of time I appreciate it and it's objectively a great album and so great to listen along with you guys. Just not my favourite. Dookie for life.
This album immediately brings me back to riding the school bus my sophomore year of high school. Just a girl and her portable cd player against the world. I remember one time an older boy on the bus asked me what I was listening to and he was ready to pounce and make fun of me for whatever my answer was and when I said American Idiot by Green Day, he paused and was like “oh, okay.”
There's something about the last two lines of Letterbomb, it's a fan favourite moment and I'm not entirely sure anyone knows why. You just need to scream it.
now do rise against whole discography
Tbh y’all should listen to Bring Me The Horizon - POST HUMAN: NeX GEn! It’s such a masterwork in the area of genre blending across the board. From the sounds of punk, metalcore, hard rock, all the way to synth pop, and then to hyperpop. It would be a great way to drive up new fans of yours as well since you haven’t stretched out to this genre and BMTH has a huge, global fan base and the reaction videos always blow up. Oli, the singer, is super plugged in on influencers as well and I’m sure he’d think you two reacting would be top tier!!!! Oh and it has so really fucking unique features! For example Lil Uzi Vert is on one of the songs.
can you guys please react to Kelela’s newest album new avatar 🙏🙏 it’s so so good
This album is a masterpiece. I rarely listen to individual songs from this album. I usually will listen to it front to back.
Please react to Confessions II by Madonna 🙏🏻 such a good album
Not liking Jesus or Suburbia is a HOT take. Then again it didn't become my favorite song on the album until repeat listens
Please react to Beyoncé new song Morning Dew (Donk)
connor drop the curl routine
I don’t tell people that I love this album, but I love this album. I guess now I’ve told people.
American Idiot was also turned into a musical on Broadway probably 10-15 years ago! It is one of the few “jukebox” musicals that I absolutely love. The way they go track by track and create an amazing story between songs is incredible. Highly recommend if it’s ever near you!
I'd say Dookie and Nimrod are other fantastic albums by them! In fact Nimrod is my personal favorite of their albums!
You guys HAVE to listen to Skiddle Bandana by La Reezy, it's his debut album and he's an XXL Freshman this year, and it's gas y'all gotta listen
Begging for a My Chemical Romance react soon 🙏🏾
YESSSS love the throwback here - please please PLEASE make your way through old school albums, whatever the era or decade. there's so much fantastic music that I'd love to hear your guys' reactions to
my dad used to love green day when i was little and he had gotten this cd stuck in his truck so its extremely nostalgic for me! would love more rock reactions btw! especially my chemical romance!! 🥰
btw Jesus of Suburbia is basically an anthem for misfits and outcasts of society, the music video explains it perfectly!
have you guys seen the geese cover of american idiot its really funny
Very pleasant surprise, gives me hope for MCR
does this remind anyone else of the black parade
You guys should check out Atrapado en Un Sueño (Trapped in a Dream) by Junior H it’s fire
Specifically the guitar riffs are insane this is some serious heat
y’all I’m joining the Air Force in a couple weeks and if I could have one dying wish it would be for you guys to do a relapse reaction by Eminem. We’ve been assured multiple times that you guys have wanted to do it and it’s about that time where us Eminem fans got one reaction a year lol that would be awesome. Stay blessed
Praying for yall to react to French exit by TV Girl🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You guys gotta check out Awolnation. If im not mistaken, Aaron Bruno sings, writes and produces the majority of it all by himself.
Oh this is gonna be fun
I think this is maybe one of the worst reviews you guys have ever done, great album
jesus of suburbia is a master piece. and whenever billie sings live “running away from pain like the kids from palestine” i get goosebumps all over
day 14, 15, 16, 17 of asking for croak dream by puma blue 🐸
please.
Oh also, hope your sinus infection clears soon, Kevin!
Funny coincidence, Rob Cavallo produced both this and Paramore's Brand New Eyes. You're also right that this was a concept album, with "Jesus of Suburbia" being the main character. I really love the sound of the drums on all the Cavallo-produced stuff I've heard, so good!
any chance of more young thug it's been 2 years we starving out here
hello fellow music lovers I recently started writing a weekly newsletter with music picks from me and my lifelong musical soulmate bestie <3 https://open.substack.com/pub/icymaya/p/maya-morley-music-monday-3-july-6?r=3zwddw&utm_medium=ios
Pleeeeease react to Beyoncé’s new single Morning Dew(Donk)!! It’s been on the internet forever as a leaked unreleased track but she finally released the finished product on 4th of July ahead of the 25th anniversary of B’Day!
As someone who has lost their father to covid 6 years ago now and finally sitting down and watching this reaction today I did not know seeing wake me up when septmeber ends make kevin cry would make me cry and miss my dad so much, I am so sorry for your loss even if it was years ago the sadness never fades. 🖤
so sorry for you loss - ❤ - K
Please please please can we get another Doja Cat record?
My favorite Green Day album is dookie. It’s got some of there most catchy and re-listenable songs.
Ahhh love Green Day! They’re from the Bay Area❤️ crazy how much sound can come from a 3 piece band!! Connor, if you’re really in the mood for some hard rock or (metal) I can’t recommend enough, Overkill by Motörhead. (Another 3 piece band 😛) It’s my personal favorite album by them, perfect 10/10 no skips. Loud af, drum heavy, bass heavy, addictive guitar riffs & the singer, Lemmy, has a unique growly voice. They just play so well individually and together 🤩
green day is my hometown band!! so excited to listen to this (under the california sun ☀️☀️☀️)
It’s a Rock Opera! Check out stuff on the broadway musical! The band was heavily involved in turning the album into the stage show.
Dookie, Nimrod and Warning are all excellent Green Day records to check out.
what I would do to listen to jesus of suburbia for the first time
Y'all should do the black parade by my chemical romance
What an album, remember tearing around in my beat up old car in the early 2000s blasting this out
oh hell yeah ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I love Green Day! I started listening in middle school and basically raised myself on it lmao
Day 3 of asking for pixel bath by Jean Dawson
Woah did not expect this. Absolute love this and truly one of the best storytelling albums of all time
Ho ly crap this is an epic drop! 10/10 reaction! They do play Jesus of Suburbia live btw and it’s epic Hope this means The Black Parade is coming sometime soon :)
The Black Parade when? lol
Need some MCR after this
Not starting with Dookie is crazy lol
Makes no sense haha
Such a great album. You guys should do some White Stripes!!
I think Jesus of Suburbia Resonates with Green Day fans in a big way. That’s the song I get emotional to every time. Green Day in alot of their albums have this recurring theme of taking a chance and leaving home and saying “fuck it, I don’t need to stay here and listen to you” as a teenager this just hit home for me in such a huge way. “There’s nothing wrong with me, this is how I’m supposed to be.” To see this song live (which is rare) and hear the band play this with their whole heart and hear everyone around you screaming these lyrics back at them along with you is an experience I will absolutely never forget and cherish. I love all 9 minutes and 8 seconds of that song. I hope you guys go back and give it another try
omg i didn't realize it was rare 🤯 i have been to one green day show and they played it! it was amazing!!!!🤩
Responding at 53:45 to the separate track thing... They are all separate songs, on the CD/album/ITunes when the album came out they were all separate, but they got combined for streaming on Spotify. I presume because they always tended to skip a beat between the songs on old streaming networks, so to preserve the flow of the album it got combined. Much better separate because some of my favourite songs are the second half's, (Letterbomb specifically) and the old Spotify version made them a massive pain to listen to. Glad you guys are picking up that it's a concept album! A tiny bit of its story because the lyrics are a bit hard to follow but are pretty literal when you do get to them: The character Jesus of Suburbia gets bored of his poor town and runs away to the city (lyrics in Jesus of Suburbia are pretty straightforward in the story telling... Ends with "you're leaving home" etc). Goes on Holiday in the new city, but after the glamour wears off on Boulevard of Broken Dreams he ends up meeting St. Jimmy, who is a drug dealer. Jesus of Suburbia falls into addiction, meets Whatsername in She's a Rebel, and falls in love. He isn't exactly a good guy in this new city and she gets tired of him and leaves him, so he goes back home (Homecoming) after metaphorically killing St. Jimmy. Album ends on him reflecting on the girl he lost, Whatsername is probably my favourite song on the album. Wake Me Up was written about BJA's father, it's on the album but not part of the story afaik. Edit cuz it's a fair point: St. Jimmy is more likely Jesus of Suburbias "city personality" instead of a literal drug dealer... I was going off memory and this album came out when I was single digits old lol.
I’ve always felt Saint Jimmy was a completely separate character too. I’ve also heard he is this other side or polar opposite of JOS. Same person but split personalities I guess too
Jesus Of Suburbia is one of my favorite songs of all time and it honestly feels like it flies by so fast when i listen to it idk if that’s a crazy take but i love the song so much
W take
Thiss is the first cd I remember getting from my brother as a small lad then dookie so inspiring🥰
Justice for Jesus of Suburbia ✊🏼
This reaction is such a pleasant surprise!
Oh if you don't know Dookie you gotta do that at some point. It's the album that they blew up with for a reason, and it's got some early pop-punk classics on it! Nimrod has some of my all time favourite Green Day songs, but I do think Dookie is a better OG Green Day starting point.
nimrod is a nice balance between their more conventional sound and some surprisingly experimental stuff too. all of it's great
I’ve literally been listening to this album so much lately never expected this from you guys happy to see it though
I’ve never clicked on a notification quicker
PLEASE do hybrid theory!!!!
I rarely comment on these reactions, but I'm really excited for this one!
Deftones when??
Any chance of Colide With The Sky by Pierce The Veil soon? You guys would love it!
Their “Bullet in a Bible” live album was the first cd I bought as a kid. This brought me wayyyyy back. Thank you!
once step closer to linkin park - hybrid theory!! looking forward to watching this one though! :)
HOLY PEAK POST, ALL TIMER ALBUM REACTION
classic
Wooooooahhh didn’t see this coming 😮 First concert ever was Green Day on their 21st century breakdown tour, and this album was like the soundtrack of my youth at 9-10 years old.
This is great
Please please please react to Dookie too!!!
Omg I became a subscriber for Beyoncé but I LOVE GREEN DAy. Flipped my shit when I just got this notification. Yayyyyyyyyyy!!!!
