I work at a small music venue in Iowa so this series really hits home. The thing that's most depressing about it is after a few weeks of working shows I realized the economics of it are such that our most consistently profitable shows are covers. I was working two shows last week one an alt rock cover band the other a country band out of Minneapolis named the Plott Hounds playing almost entirely original songs with a few covers excellent show if you're in to country. The cover show did twice the numbers. In the experience you really get a sense of how securitization kills culture in real terms because cover bands are a near guaranteed check it's the same thing with marvel movies the only thing anyone can think to do is a Kamehameha on the skinner box nostalgia button.
