Around 10% of the English language is French words. A legacy of the Norman (French) invasion and takeover of 1066. Most English "fancy" words are either French or Latin. Basic, short words are mostly original Anglo Saxon or Danish funnily enough. The Danes occupied 1/3 of England for a few hundred years.

Thank you Denys, you manage to tell me what’s going on in all its deadly seriousness and yet still make me smile! Reservoirs! Yes it is a French word! My Aunt used to call them Reservoys! I think it’s a regional pronunciation! Is nothing going to get better until that Putin has ceased? Being in charge or being alive? Same thing I think.
