Gas (not petrol) was common in France in the 50's and 60's, Post Office Tephones in the UK used propane on some of it's trailer equipment. There's nothing new about using gas. We're moving towards hydrogen for vehicles as an alternative to elecric vehicles, it's even being developed for aircraft. In ten years time you could be flying airliners yourself.
