I've been wanting to meet Jenny for years. Last week my parents finally took us all to Pandora – The World of Avatar at Walt Disney Land. I saw Jenny and immediately ran up to her and waved saying she was my hero. She grabbed my arms and saw my Marvel tattoos and frowned. She quickly said "No no, you have fandom scars! You must have watched a lot of stinky movies. You, princess, are MY hero!" And bowed and kissed my hand before hugging me tightly & whispering, "You're beautiful. Please stop." in my ear. I cried the rest of the whole day.
Jenny should be a face character at Disneyland. And then she could go to the Disney parks incognito - everyone would just assume she's one of the actors portraying her.

There's definitely some cultural/demographic overlap with the popularity of slash fiction, I think. Women of a certain age using/seeing gay men as kind of nonthreatening poseable romance dolls.

This is really funny, during the late 2000s and early 2010s, my cousin played a face character, and her boyfriend, now husband, was a Peter Pan who was pretty well known on Tumblr. This video sent me spiralling down my tumblr archive from 2013 when I was in high school. I just found about 5-10 posts, either gif sets of Peter being nice to actual children or compilations that all included variations of the battle scars story. Never been a disney or theme park fan so Imyguess is that the character interactions were cute and that was enough. Can’t say I’ve ever seen the actual videos following him but wow that unleashed some second hand social anxiety…
The Mad T Party fandom type is not super unusual. It's a DIY fandom, a group of people take a thing with little or no characterization/backstory and make their own collective narrative from the ground up (see also, the dancestor subset of the homestuck fandom in 2013-2014)

I went down a rabbit hole of watching some of the videos after watching this. It's not as cringey as you make it sound. The main person who does the Huggy Pan videos actually became friends with him. I'm also impressed with how well the character actors respond to different situations and stay in character.

when you talked about the demographic presumably being annual pass holders, I can confirm it was not only them. I have no idea how I, a Texan who had never even been to Disneyland, became a part of the pandom, but here we are. It was only like a year long phase, but still pretty significant. I was also 14 and actively running a one direction (mainly just harry) tumblr at the time, tho, so that’s probably the crossover

I was big into disneybounding for a while and even went to one of the meetups at one point and i had never heard of the Pandom until then, when i met a girl who was dressed as peter and asked me if I wanted to catch the meet and greet with her. I was bounding as alice but the wendy colors are so similar that this girl told peter that i was wendy and I had to awkwardly struggle to talk the situation down as he was like "thats dumb thats not wendy!" and im like I am so sorry sir you are correct i am not wendy. like the actor was clearly over obnoxious girls trying to mess with him

I wasn't ready for the blast of 2008 memories this video gave me about the Alice/Hatter face character webcomics and the subsequent spinoff fandom. I always thought the Peter Pandom was an offshoot of Alice&Hatter, not the other way around! This was all pre-tumblr... most of what I remember was on LJ and deviantart (good god what a sentence)

I remember seeing grown women who were waiting by the character entrance from the backstage area. They somehow knew Peter Pan was about to walk out and they went into business mode when he made his appearance. I always thought that was strange but I never knew how deep this rabbit hole went.

In regards to why any adults would be in this fandom, I knew a girl in her 20s who was obsessed with Peter Pan as a character and specifically sought out the cast member playing him at Disneyland. This girl was very emotionally immature and kind of a entitled brat at times. She seemed to see herself in the character and I think she thought these traits were actually cute and endearing. Not at all saying any adult who likes the character is immature, but I think there’s potentially a sub group of adults in the Peter Pandom who aren’t attracted to Peter but are just drawn to the whole idea of “never growing up”.

So, the Peter actor who married the Wendy actress was the one who was rumored to have been fired for the Tumblr fandom, but my friend who was a character host said that it was because he was getting wrinkles around his eyes. He did post somewhere on social media basically saying goodbye to that role because “Peter Pan has to grow up” or something similar which is probably where the “he’s getting too old” stuff comes from.
I’m incredibly grateful to have been a face char before smartphones and widespread social media.

It is depressing, and like Jenny said, it's a real "thing" that is also used to explain away boy bands and disney channel stars etc. The expectation that girls will "graduate" to, by implication, sexually threatening guys is really telling about our culture.

i was SO STOKED to see that this is the direction you went with this prompt!! i was literally telling my roommate about this whole thing the other day lol. i know way too much about the pandom despite not being on tumblr at that time and i just want everyone to know that in february, carebear wendy and spieling peter celebrated their 17th anniversary since they started dating and they now have two kids and it’s still really freaking cute (and yes this is info taken from their public social media, including peter’s tumblr, so don’t worry there was no invasion of privacy here)
So excited for the Efteling vid! I went for the first time in June and really loved it (even though we just did one day with my small kids so couldn't do as much as I wanted)

Awesome that you’re going to experience the Area 51 ride in some form! I remember going on it as a kid in Australia and it totally traumatised me, but also it was one of the most iconic parts of SeaWorld. I was sad that I’d never see it again, but I love that there’s still a clone of it out there in the world!
Unrelated to the video but the absolute best part about driving out of the Netherlands and into Germany is seeing all the cars hit the border then slam on the gas and speed away. It’s like the Netherlands is the staging area and Germany is the race track. Have fun!

Yeesh. The initial description of the Peter Pandom sounded fairly wholesome, but once we started watching the videos, it turned out to be very creepy and uncomfortable. Still, I have to hand it to "Spieling Peter". As socially unaware as some of those girls were, I thought he handled it quite well. He seemed adept at coming up with character-appropriate deflections on the fly. I mean, good improv skills and a deep well of patience must be job requirements for Disney theme park face character performers, but still, I was impressed by his ability to put up with it--or to just leave the interaction without coming across as rude, as the case may be.
So freakin good, I never knew I needed to know about the Peter Pandom. But I did...
I will now call that Miley Cyrus song “Wrecking Bomb” because it sounds cooler.
I think it’s fun. You get to say you met your favorite character from a movie. And it’s always interesting to see how the theme park translates them to work in that setting. I worked in a theme park in close contact with and have met many *friends of*. The biggest thing, I think, is to let the performer lead the interaction. Giving out-of-character prompts is just setting a trap and making their already-taxing jobs harder. Ask Peter about the Lost Boys and pixie dust, get your picture and autograph, and the. let him move on.
Always love hearing people talk about theme parks so this was awesome. I can't deny I am somewhat of a coaster person myself, but I love dark rides and other heavily themed attractions as well. I just love theme parks and am definitely excited to see your Evermore and European park videos.
My big takeaway from this is that Disney needs to do an Avengers rock band.
If you were ever planing to go to Spain theres Portaventura park there and I just feel like you’d love the western town resort you can stay in, I was there a few weeks ago at they had rooms in the western store fronts, and a saloon that reminded me off your spider trip video
How strange! I've been on tumblr since 2014 and had never heard of this. But the thing that struck me most about the videos is just... how bad the costumes look. That dark green and the horribly bright lime green don't go together at all, and it doesn't look anything like the shade of green his tunic was in the animated movie.
Things I never knew existed
As someone with pretty extensive self harm scars, if I went to Disney and a face character said something like that to me, I would *die of embarrassment* oh my god. I can't imagine *wanting* someone to acknowledge my scars like that (or at all) and I certainly wouldn't want *Peter Pan* to do it. My scars are pretty visible in summer clothes and I get some remarks from time to time, but there's something that viscerally horrifying about the idea of someone dressed up as a Disney character commenting on them in a cutesy themed way around so many other people

For the first half of the video I felt like I knew everything, I was on tumblr during that era and saw the Peter Pan stuff and even recognize one of those main pandom actors… but then the t party thing totally threw me for a loop. I’ve never even heard of that show and I’m so surprised and horrified that it was the successor to pandom. Wow… amazing
I’m a current employee at Disneyland (in costuming) and I believe all our current walk around characters are: Peter, Wendy, Alice, Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow, Pirate Redd, Cruella, Evil Queen, Gaston, Flynn Ryder, and Villager Belle. I forget if Frontierland Tiana counts (I think she just rides the Mark Twain with guests). I’m also not sure about Bert and Mary, they come from a different venue and I’ve personally only seen them out with the pearly band.

It's so fun that you'll be driving around my home region for a little trip, I can't wait for your take on things. If you have a spare day (which I imagine you probably don't) then there's also Fort Fun, which is the only one of the amusement parks in the area that I've ever been to, and it's awkwardly Western/American themed so that might be mildly amusing to you? It's about a 90 minute drive from Movie Park Germany, and as a kid, Phantasialand was the fancy/expensive park we couldn't go to so we just had Fort Fun. I hope you enjoy the Netherlands/Germany!

There was a woman, I think who went by briichan (?), on Deviantart who got the Mad Hatter/Alice thing going as far back as the early 2000s, back when only the 60s film existed. She used to get a lot of unfair flack for it and it was a bit notorious at the time.
It was Brianna Cherry Garcia, and her art was my first exposure to any Hatter/Alice shipping. I believe she worked for Disney in some capacity as an illustrator as well.

Character interactions are some of my favorite things at parks like Disney and Universal. I had some very memorable ones as a kid. As an adult I go in with a plan for what to say (always something that references the character, never out-of-universe stuff), follow the character's lead, make it quick and leave (especially since I'm fully aware I am not the target audience). If it ends up being meaningful and substantive, that's all a credit to the performers. So I love watching people's video compilations on YouTube... but I *always* skip any Peter content. As Jenny referenced, the cheeky persona is kinda like someone at a con who's cosplaying as a known annoying character a little too well. But also the interactions are almost always cringe. Had no idea it was because there was a whole Tumblr fandom around it. But after watching this, shame on me for being surprised...

Oh fun! I was 14 in 2010 and very much into the Speiling Peter content. Iirc, most of the content was from around then or earlier, but a lot of the content came back up 2-3 years later. People didn't realize the videos were old because they were just gifs, and people would make up stories. Like I use to watch a channel that a lot of these gifs were from, and I *think* it was run by a castmember who knew them and made video content during downtime. There were some inside jokes there that implied the cameraperson knew them. Anyway, He was still very popular even when he was no longer working there, and married. To a girl who played Wendy/Alice. They won some radio contest where the most voted for couple had their wedding paid for. I'm sure they won by a huge margin thanks to the tumblr fandom sharing it around, I'm sure the radio station was confused at the huge influx of votes.

I remember seeing Peter Pan when I was 18 and at the park for a half day. Thought he was pretty cute but didn't have an "interaction" and would have been far too awkward to try. The level of cringe and non self awareness in this video is positively nuclear.... I feel bad for the Peter actors.

I remember this from being on Tumblr in 2011 and it was no where near any of the stuff i followed people for. It just sorta happened. Really glad it's over now, I can only imagine how many AMVs people would be making now with that Peter Pan song being super popular with this generation of tweens.

Oh wow! Spieling Peter...I wouldn't say I was "in the Pandom", but I did very briefly follow him because my college roommate had been obsessed w/ him for a while. (This was like, 2009?) Note: neither of us were on Tumblr at the time—there was a YouTube only sub Pandom I think. I noped out when we stumbled on his real name. There was one iconic 10ish(?) minute video where SP, an Alice, and a Hatter willingly hopped on a boat ride with some guests & they just casually hung out in character. It might have been the video that started it all. On the weirdness of the Alice/Hatter shipping: There was a very specific face actor for Hatter who was noticeably quite younger than the other Hatters & featured in a lot of SP's vids. I believe he was the only Hatter people were shipping with a specific Alice.

i was tangetially involved in the peter pandom because i had a hyperfixation on all peter pan content when i was like 15 and the disneyland peter was the only version of peter pan that was actually getting any fan content 😭😭 I guess the dozens of sub-par movies didn't inspire the same fervor lmao, i don't know if it makes me better or worse that i was wholly uninterested in shipping myself with this peter but was interested in his place in Peter Pan Canon 😭

It was a sort of reasonable drive from Phantasialand but like a full days drive from Efteling which we'd inevitably have to head back toward, so it just didn't seem realistic with the driving around we're already doing. (Esp since it'll be my first time driving in Germany) I'd check it out if I go back though

I´m looking forward to hear from your experience with movie park and phantasialand. I´ve been there a few times as a kid. In movie park there was a boat ride themed to the neverending story, back when the park was warner bros. movie world, which had an animatronic fuchur. i think it just opend and closed its eys and maybe moved its tail a little, but i loved it. I haven´t been to neighter of the parks for at least a decade, so it will cool to hear from you how they are doing now.

I normally don't like cringe as a concept because it's so often punching down but those videos made me feels so deeply uncomfortable. I could barely even talk with the Diseny characters when I went because I just felt like it was weird that I was having a talk both of us knew was fake with a stranger my own age. They're great for kids but to me the only one I enjoyed at all was BB8 because he was an actual robot. My friend dragged me to a few others because she wanted photos with characters we Disney bound as so I did humour that, it was her trip too, but still the idea of an entire fandom worth of people doing way more weird invasive stuff deliberately is so weird to me

What amuses me about them opting for grown men to play face actor for Peter in the park is that it would just make so much more sense for it to be, as they cast for the broadway musical renditions of Peter Pan, a small woman instead. Would have prevented such a tragedy of this fandom from ever occurring!
