Hey, Jenny. On the topic of the Pride Bratz dolls and why they're so expensive. It's because Bratz has shifted 100% of their efforts into being catered specifically to adult collectors, or more specifically, the people who were kids when Bratz first came out that are now adults. If you walk down any doll aisle in any store, you'll notice that Bratz dolls aren't really sold there anymore, and have been replaced with stuff like Monster High, Rainbow High, LOL Surprise.

One of the cards they chose was "Bearscape", which originally portrayed a landscape of bears (animal type) but now portrays a landscape full of bears (big sexy men type) lounging around in a hotspring 😂 The other cards mostly just featured canonically LGBT characters in moments of triumph and romance.. shoutout to mtg for having a canonically trans character in 2015, long before most games did!

While the Biggle Wiggle story scratched that "plush stories" itch a bunch of us seem to have, the Disney Key tangent reminded me of the plight of the Disney Store in my city. My friend worked at a travel agency across the hall from them, and reported this. Management was hard and fast on needing to do the key ritual every morning, to the point where staff were not allowed to open the store without doing it, but on a Tuesday in November there might not be any kids hanging around a mall at 9 AM. So on multiple occasions the travel agents had to come over and do the key ritual so the poor Disney Store staff could open the shop. Drains the magic from the Disney Keys, which had little to offer as is. I recently bought Disney pins but mostly so that Wendy from Peter Pan could be planting a kiss on a shocked Beaker from the Muppet Show, no regrets, that tableau lives in my office.

On the Bratz pride dolls, at the moment Bratz is basically exclusively targeting adult collectors. All of the brand new dolls have been collabs with designer brands and very expensive compared to what other doll lines are producing. The other dolls they are producing are reproductions of old lines like Rock Angelz. For example the new Bratz x GCDS dolls are AUD99 for 1 outfit and a couple accessories while a Rainbow High Doll is AUD50 for 2 outfits. The doll collecting twitter circles I see seemed to be quite lukewarm on the pride dolls, so I'm not even sure how successful they've been at targeting the adult collectors anyways!

I'm with you on the keys being dumb, especially since I am a Kingdom Hearts player. The Keyblades that are based off of Disney worlds can be so creative in that game and looking at a lineup of the keys Disney sells, it's so obviously the same base with a few accents glued on.

The Bratz Pride dolls were really just for the collectors. That's the market Bratz currently is focused on. They re-release a lot of old doll lines. The two pride dolls are new releases, but the characters (Roxxi and Nevra) already existed. They are now officially gay, which is cool! (I am said collector, but they didn't release them where I live :( )

The tangents were fun too, so I’m glad you kept them in. :) As a large-ish man who likes female pop-culture characters (and the colour pink/purple), it bugs me that a lot of best/cutest designs are only available on clothing in smaller sizes and/or stereotypically “feminine” shapes, so I did cheer a little when you touched on that topic. Also, a couple of my fave comedians post short skits on TikTok, so I’d never bad-mouth it… even if I do wish they’d post longer content on YouTube instead!

I never liked how Bratz looked (huge eyes and lips, basically no nose) but I always appreciated them for being a lot more inclusive than something like Barbie. They were definitely a lot more aware/caring of the idea of "girls like dolls that look like them" instead of making them choose from a variety of mostly the same blonde white lady. I don't understand the Ugg fluffy sandals. Like, the suede boots you could spray with waterproof coating but wouldn't you have to constantly brush out your sandals?

I was at Shopper's back in June and they had some Pride-themed stuff, mostly from their store brand. But it's like, oh, look, rainbow eyeshadow and rainbow makeup sponges. It's fine, I guess, but it felt kind of lazy, since eyeshadow palettes already come in rainbow shades and makeup sponges get gross quickly.

The corporitization of pride is always an interesting question. Pride started as both a political movement but also as a corporate one-- specifically, when gay bars boycotted beer brands and basically financially beat them into submission, forcing them to publicly support pride events. Part of the reason why absolut vodka was such an early and persistent presence at Pride.

Toy World here in Australia were selling officially-produced, rainbow coloured plushes of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. They weren't explicitly labelled as Pride products... but I can't think of any other reason for their existence.

This year my sister bought me a dress that’s literally just a rainbow, I feel like Rainbow Brite wearing it, and it’s my favorite piece of clothing now. Lol. Pride is absolutely being used by a lot of companies who don’t care about the LGBT+ community, and while that’s an important conversation, it is really nice to just be able to find things to celebrate Pride that would never have existed when I was a kid. Representation matters a lot. I hope you’re feeling better now! Had Covid for the first time a month ago and my god, I still feel like I’m getting over it. I hope you’ve fully recovered by now. :)

Re: Le Creuset, the $400 dutch oven -- it's a high end French brand designed to be legacy and that you can pass on to your kids but then they can pass it on again as well, like the quality is just so high that unless you're extremely reckless the enamel should never wear off (though if you get one with a light colored inner enamel, that one can have scorch marks over time). Compared to entry level cast iron brand Lodge which is like $50, Lodge is way heavier and has rougher edges because of the design process. Both should cook the same, but Le Creuset will be easier to maneuver because of the weight, and it'll also always be nonstick. That said, most people aren't buying legacy cast iron for future generations, so I only ever see this on like wedding registries when people want a massive upgrade to their current kitchenware. Comparable at a slightly cheaper range is Staub which I think is american made? They're like Le Creuset but with darker paint colors, and some of them come with black enameled insides which hide the burn marks. I think both are comparable but Le Creuset wins for being the lightest without sacrificing quality in the process.

Re: the bratz set, they're pre-existing characters! Nevra (fur coat) first came out in 2003 and Roxxi is one of the dolls in the very first Twiinz set (2004) as well as one of the stars of the Rock Angelz movie; they were confirmed as a canon couple in 2019 via social media but were first planned and prototyped as a pride 2-pack in 2016 that was meant to be sold on store shelves, but retailers didn't purchase stock so it was cancelled. The idea was brought back for the 2022 Bratz Collector Pride set in collaboration with fashion designer Jimmy Paul (hence the high price tag and the gigantic box). I do love them and I have 2 sets, but I do agree the price is a little high, especially considering the same company makes Rainbow High and they come with twice the level of detail for a 27$ playline price lol. They are online exclusives as well which definitely bothers me, I'm sure MGA tried to get them in stores (and to be fair, all of the recent Bratz Collector dolls have been online exclusives so it's not JUST them), but evidently not hard enough; they currently make two of the best selling doll lines on the market, I feel like they could have pressured retailers to put them on shelves, if only in a Pride display at Target or something. The Laverne Cox Barbie by Mattel is ALSO an online exclusive, sadly. I'm half-tempted to purchase both online and return them in-store just to increase the chance that a little kid will see them on a store shelf IRL. Hope you fully recover soon! <3

i went to the converse store to buy plain white converse, but they were out, so i kind of just walked back to the front but picked up a pair of the pride shoes, and the employees standing there were like “the pride collection is so cool isn’t it?” and i got flustered cause i was going to leave and not buy them since i only wanted my white converse so i just nodded and then quietly put them down and left. i am gay but i felt like i was doing something homophobic.

For Jenny and anyone else curious, the Dutch oven from William Sonoma is so expensive because it is a Le Creuset brand Dutch oven. They are like one of the most premium high end cast iron companies. Their pots, generally, last multiple lifetimes. Many a western chef, at a home or professional level, will praise their quality and talk about them and all that
