Ramble: Reacting to a Selection of Sandra Lee
It was a close race, but at last underdog Sandra Lee has won the poll
Comments (173)
someone really needs to tell sandra that she doesn't have to use ALL of the icing that she has when she's decorating a cake
I really like cucumber ice cream
I return to this video during the darkest moments of my life and it doesn’t disappoint.
her halloween look was so fierce…the off the shoulder black mini dress, the choker, the HAIR so slay Sandra Lee
i love this video so much it's soo cozy i love doing chores with this on
I loved this so much, I had a smile on my face the whole time! This was my first exposure to Sandra Lee as well, and now I can say this vid ranks high among all the Jenny vids I've seen so far. Jenny's energy was very high, and while she was making fun she was not being mean, just honestly reacting (sometimes in horror) to what she was seeing. Finally... harrbulled eggs. Harbuldeggs.
Ok we *must* address how in the last video she appears to be dressed as Rizzo from Grease instead of, you know, Sandra Dee???????? Hello?????
you know I used to also not like icing but I tried making a fancy homemade buttercream once and honestly I could eat that by the spoonful, it was so good, it’s light and fluffy and not overly sweet. would recommend if you would like to change your outlook on icing
It's so good! Definitely worth the effort, my family does box mix cakes but always homemade buttercream and whipped cream.
Kkkkkkkkkkk. I. Kk. Kk kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. Kkkkkkkkkk kkk kkkkkk
I thought this was going to be her reacting to Dr Sandra Lee and I was so concerned
I was drinking coffee when she came in with the nutcracker and Jenny said "she's got a husband!" and I nearly did a cartoon spit-take
I don't know why, but this video and the Hallmark youtube channel vid enamour me in ways I cannot possibly hope to explain.
Sandra Lee enters the Lauren/Nicole/Thea/Alyissa power struggle in season 3 after crossing the Narrow Sea and I think that's where the show really gets good.
As a kid that would eat spoonfuls of canned icing, I loved her show lol as an adult I can see why my parents were mildly horrified with every recipe. I was also obsessed with her tablescapes, I subjected my poor parents to my own renditions of them all the time
I think about this video every time I say “hard-boiled eggs” or “aquarium”
Sandra Lee's icing habit is even worse considering it's store-bought and that stuff can be agonizingly sweet. I'll sometimes use cake mix without any sadness or judgment, but making a good buttercream icing is SO SIMPLE and it turns out far less sickly than pretty much any icing that I've bought at a store.
I know this is a silly place to put it, but I was just dicking around with whatever ingredients I had last time I made icing yet it was the best icing I've made: roughly equal amounts of butter and icing sugar, then 1/3rd margarine, and a little bit of milk. I then mixed it with a whisk for a few minutes and it became very light and fluffy!
her putting all of that mint in the middle of that cake was diabolical
this video was a treat :)
I feel like Jenny hit on something real when she said “her husband!” Perhaps Sandra’s nutcracker collection combined with her aggression toward the poor gingerbread man is indicative of some past relational trauma and her collection of nutcrackers and this video are her way of processing some past failed relationships. (“Simon is a teacher”… How do we know this, Sandra?! He’s a nutcracker! I feel like there definitely could be more underneath…) 😳🤔
I just noticed the Cuomo comment above and I feel like this solidly backs up my case. 🤣
Pink and green gives cosmo and Wanda vibes
I’m actually obsessed with the oddly thick alcoholic swill
The meat recipe with chocolate and taco seasoning is a real dish. It's mole (pronounced mo-lay, because it's Spanish). She didn't pronounce it quite right, but I've seen this before at Mexican restaurants. My brother likes it.
Their is a meat dish called Mole but you don’t use Taco Seasoning like that really. It’s also on chicken and I guess some people use beef but it wouldn’t be thick cuts of steak for sure and it really wouldn’t be made at all how she made it.
The nutcracker part was amazing. I was cheering the entire time.
this whole video actually made me laugh so hard
“the shape of butter” took me the hell out
As a person who celebrates Kwanzaa, this isn't even the kind of thing we do. There's no big "Kwanzaa cake" tradition, and if anything I feel weird that Google results are saturated with this mess if you Google "Kwanzaa cake." As a person who enjoys cake in general, that is not even what a harvest cake is.
Am just watching this now and got to the Hanukkah cake where she just shoves marshmallows into the middle. Those weren't even kosher marshmallows! That kind is either made with pork gelatin, or not labeled you so can't tell. I know this because I've had to hunt for halal marshmallows so I could make Rice Krispie squares that a couple of my daughter's friends could eat. It just feels plain rude to make something for Hanukkah that's not even trying to be kosher.
jenny the creator of the kwanza cake confessed that the acorns were actually corn nuts and that the candles were sandra's idea
ngl the purple mouth was everything
Okay so I can't stop thinking about the cardboard in the cake. I feel like she heard about cake supports in professional cakes (which are wrapped in something watertight and then, crucially, have supports like wooden dowels or boba straws to hold the cake layers up), and just didn't think about it at all after that. Without something holding up the cardboard, all this does is add an upsetting little paper layer in the middle???? And the cardboard is going to turn unto mush! You wont even be able to cut around it because your knife will go right through it! You're serving everyone a mushy leaning paper cake Sandra! Someone please take this video away from me
this is exactly what i was thinking all along! the sheer confidence of making this thing up as you go along without doing reasearch! and most of all, did NOBODY on this set have the slightest idea how cake supports actually work??? i imagine they did, since food content production is it's own thing but they were just afraid to say anything to this woman who is, frankly, disconnected of the reality the rest of us live in
I've now read so many articles about the Kwanzaa Cake, I can't stop
the taco seasoning and chocolate thing could be a super stretch take on a ... mole?? maybe?
The Kwanzaa cake has its own section on her Wikipedia page: "Food writer Anthony Bourdain, who was harshly critical of Lee in general, described the video clip of this segment of the show as "eye searing" and "a war crime". The cake was called "scary" by the Houston Chronicle, and "the most ghastly-sounding dish in Lee's culinary repertoire" by Tulsa World. " 😭
Not that it's likely that anyone here would try anything this woman demonstrates but I just need to point it out because it's something that bugs me a lot and I think it's kind of common--*never* use cooking spray on a non-stick pan, you'll just ruin it.
Love her take on hard bulldayges. A revelation. Love it.
Here is link to butterbeer recipe 🧈🍻📝: https://youtu.be/rjQS76fA4UY?t=1978
I'm not sure if it was said earlier in the comments, but Sandra Lee was dating Governor Andrew Cuomo during the making of this show and was the "First Lady of New York." I have always had a lot of fun imagining what New York State dinners/parties must have looked like.
I held it together through most of these, but the chocolate taco steak really turned my stomach.
The cherry almond rice sounds great by itself (reminds me of the cherry almond naan I like at my favorite local Indian restaurant), but then you serve that with the chocolate taco steak! And I realize she's probably trying to do a bastardized version of mole, but there's no way her version is good.
As far as the availability of naan - it was definitely a lot harder to find outside of places with Indian grocers until at least 2009, from what I remember. I remember having a hard time finding it where we live in the NC mountains till about 2012.
"The Shape of Butter" will be the title of my Alabama-centered 50 Shades parody novel.
When you said you don't know which of the women is Sandra Lee I literally had been going "did she composite the shot with herself?" so, big same
a wonderful video, thank you! but oh no! i just popped a pierog in my mouth right before the conversation about mandarin slugs...let me tell u, not a good time LOL
Jenny, we all want yr Butterbeer recipe and also you should just do Sandra Lee videos
Shouldve done a bake along🤣
lol, idk if it's intentional or not, but when jenny is talking about the licorice on the cake she says "it's smiling at me" lol, which is a line from A Christmas Story when they get served a duck with the head still on it. and i appreciate that because its a great line but no one remembers it except me so when i use it no one gets it.
People love to rag on her but honestly she is iconic, this show is iconic, and I really respect her and the show. It has the same energy to me as the hate infomercial products get. If it's not for you it just seems stupid, but like being depressed and wanting low effort but fancier shit to eat, Sandra Lee's your woman, y'know?
Jenny, not to put you on the spot, but can we have your butter beer recipe? Cuz I'm realizing my friend would love that.
Unrelate to the actual video, I’ve been trying to find a good lip product that last through mask wearing and food eating, and the Maybeline Superstay Matte Ink lipsticks have worked pretty well for me! I made the mistake of wearing chapstick underneath and that didn’t work. They might be worth a try! They’re usually at like Targets and Walgreens and are pretty affordable. Sometimes it can be hard to get them off but not as bad as it was to get yours off
the potato ice cream is so specific
When Jenny referred to the Quanzaa cake as texturally feeling like one was "eating a plate of garbage" I laughed mid-beer sip, choked, coughed myself into a headache and frightened my dog. 10/10
I lost it at the potato ice cream. What even is the occasion for something like that? St. Patrick's Day? Lmao
I just saw an internet ad for it as a regional food of Idaho lmfao my eyes Bugged out
I had no idea who Sandra Lee was before this, but now At Home with Amy Sedaris works on a whole other level for me.
"...dark rum..." *pours what looks like a myers's rum bottle full of CLEAR LIQUID into glass*
Fur-bearing blue cocktail
My favorite thing about the Hanukkah cake is that most marshmallows are non-kosher. It's very "she has heard Hanukkah existed"
Not me thinking she was going to react to sandra lee aka dr pimple popper
Thank god that it wasn't that!
Petition to have Jenny reveal her boozy butterbeer recipe
I think she talked about it in her Universal studios patreon video. I forgot the timestamp though lol.
i feel like if i fed her haggis she would combust
this was an excellent ramble
Sandra had to get her friends very drunk to deal with any party with her then-husband Andrew Cuomo.
TWIST
The Shape of Butter is my favorite Guillermo del Toro movie.
A deaf woman working in a 1950s top-secret government lab in the Cold War US enters into a surprisingly deep and passionate forbidden relationship with an ancient Paula Deen specimen
Perhaps it's just because the topic is Sandra Lee, but that lip stain keeps reminding me of this boysenberry sauce that my mother drizzles over cheesecakes, and now I'm feeling hungry.
I love that lipstick, Jenny! You look fantastic!
Drop the butterbeer recipe
As a long-time semi-ironic fan of Sandra Lee, this made my day. Fun fact: she once wrote a romance novel called “The Recipe Box”. It’s exactly what you would think it would be.
Too be fair, applying too much icing and using cardboard (and other inedible structural things) is how professional cake decorating works. But, like you said, this situation sounds like you should be prioritizing edibility, and it's not really the sort of end result that you sacrifice ease of eat for.
The real demo for this btw is alcoholic housewives who have to pretend they're doing high-effort stuff even though it's secretly easy and takes like 30 minutes. It's "things to con your husband with" since if he's a gormless dope he won't know. So you can sleep in until 1:30 (you're hung over) and do this at like 3:00 and then he's home at like 5:30. But he'll be happy because guys like food.
This is all I've ever wanted. Perfection.
This is my new watch over and over Jenny vid
I love the lipstick!
I'm from Idaho and unfortunately the baked potato icecream thing is a staple at county fairs 😂
I don't know if anyone else pointed this out but the 'acorns' on the Kwanzaa cake are corn nuts, like the gas station snack. Yuck!
This video made me feel nostalgic for this show, my mom loves Sandra Lee, especially the 'table-scapes'. She's an extremely over-the-top decorator like Sandra too, lol
That meat dish with taco seasoning, jalapeno and chocolate sauce sounds absolutely horrifying??? That Halloween tacky table to end on was A+ though.
A very cursed (and racist tbh) version of mole poblano. The real dish is incredible.
Jenny I mean this as a compliment but her show almost feels like your approach on that Star Wars show, it's just so weird and it works. Like just pours in a ton of vodka and is completely deadpan about it.
The note on the lipstick, er, marker not coming off until toothpaste was used (and only partially) was miiiiiidly horrifying.
Baby carrots are a lie! They're just carved out of normal sized carrots.
Holiday balls had me rolling
This was main channel hilarious.
Sandra Lee is the most american woman I have ever seen
Sooo, you have a good alcoholic butterbeer recipe… care to share?
idk if anyone posted this higher up, but this supercut was my original exposure to Sandra Lee: https://youtu.be/YI1QelmONg0
jesus christ i wasn't expecting the Youtube Poop energy in the middle
I'd like to see Jenny do a video about the American Girls and the American Girls stores and cafes!
Jenny's reactions were priceless :D and the purple lipstick really grew on me!
And tonight I learned that I have been confusing Sandra Lee, and apparent person, with Sara Lee the dessert brand for months upon months now. Well. Jenny is not wrong, that steak... mixture looked terrible, and if you're cooking onions, why would you need onion seasoning? Also looking forward to A Christmas Prince 4: Holiday Balls
Omg Jenny your makeup is so good in this video. I love the dark lip.
"she has a HUSBAND" absolutely destroyed me
BATTER IS BETTER THAN CAKE, YES
I disagree because I love the texture of a good cake while batter is basically pudding, but I'm pretty confident saying that cookie dough is usually better than cookies.
Has Jenny always had Fremen eyes, or is that a lighting thing?
Forever going to refer to ornaments as "holiday balls"
That Christmas tree cake is giving me Sleeping Beauty birthday cake energy, like it's just going to start melting. Somebody prop a broom up against it
Jenny I'm guessing if you had American Girl stuff as a kid then you were most likely a Felicity fan since she was the ultimate horse girl circa 1774. Her movie Felicity: An American Girl Adventure is a solid staple of the horse girl genre.
ngl i thought this was going to be about dr. pimple popper lmao. love this sandra lee tho
not the yiddies on the festive tiered christmas cake
I love that she dressed as Babs and Liza for Halloween. She could have just gone with a generic witch costume, but no, she decided to give the gays everything they want. Iconic.
She did Madonna and Cher too!!
i doubted this topic when it came to voting but it was so funny, forgive me sandra lee voters
Right! I'm only part of the way through and the reaction to the ice cream baked potato alone was worth it.
I can't believe she could afford a real, human-sized nutcracker when the literal PRINCE of Christmas had to settle for a cardboard cutout
So freaking sad :(
In 2012 Lee won an Emmy for this show.
SHE HOT GLUED A PLATE TO A CROW. absolutely iconic.
It always feels like a show everyone had fun making.
Yeah I didn't leave it in cause I didn't say much over it but the halloween montage where she's like joking with her makeup artist and feeding the camera guy a martini everything seemed like good vibes on set
It was everything I could have dreamed or hoped for. Sandra Lee was the midwestern church grandma's answer to Martha Stewart and Better Homes and Gardens. canned and boxed foods played a big role in amercan cooking from the depression to WWII and there were still grandmas in the 90s and 00s who never cooked fresh. So Martha was an unpleasant shock to them, and Sandra was a return to normalcy. Her audience is mostly dead now but her legacy shall live forever
"The Shape of Butter" is my favorite guillermo del toro movie
That cake was giving Trix yogurt
Jenny would absolutely drink that blue coconut cocktail if it was at Pandora World with a funny name.
The time has finally come!!!
I'm so excited you have no idea
lmao this lady is insane and not sure 100% but i feel like nobody that celebrates kwanza has ever made that lol this was hilarious
The way the heirloom cake slowly develops a lean through sheer weight of icing. Someone in the comments described the cone as a ‘dunce cap’ which made me cackle
Cardboard rounds are pretty standard in larger cakes but they should be covered in foil or plastic wrap or you're going to have soggy paper in your cake. That icing though.....
My mom had one of those serving things! It is essentially a big vase and all the wine glasses are on extra long stems that sit in the vase. the downside is they dont have normal bottoms like a glass, just the wierd long stem so you cant set it down the glass is either in your hand or in the vase there is nothing in between. if you want to find one i would recommend looking for the brand princess house or partylite they were like mlm tupperware party type brands where sellers would come to your house and throw a party and try to sell you crazy dishware shit like that.
Do you have trypophobia, Jenny? I have it, and it's terrible, but I have sort of "attenuated" it through "exposure" 😖😭🤢💀
I too have never cooked steak or eaten it since I was a kid, but somehow I'm thinking taco seasoning, french onion dip mix, chocolate, garlic, and onions is not the best preparation out there.
I have to wonder if the steak thing was supposed to channel a Mexican mole flavor, with the jalapeños. That explains the huge stacking of spices. The observation that she’s chasing flavor seems pretty sound. Edit: also I looked up the Kwanza cake thing and apparently there’s no one food for Kwanza. Because it’s such a new holiday it seems like people like to create their own traditions rooted in local community and family. There’s an interview from salon about that episode that’s good.
The playlist is here if anyone wants some comfortingly silly content! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6UAq8F29TIwB5bDJb7UBVJ3Dyhn9EBG6
This was a dream come true! Like nothing Sandra does is ‘good’ but she honestly seems so fun to hang out with and drink copious amounts at her elaborate tablescapes.
So is Jenny going to share her alcoholic butterbeer recipe?
I think it’s in her theme park food review ramble, or the Harry Potter world one
Anyone else think it was weird in that first clip that she used a spoon as a cocktail strainer? All those fancy kitchen things and they didn't give her a tool for properly straining all those kiwi chunks out of the cocktail
I love the dark sided lipstick! Werk Jenny!
This reminds of some random cookbooks my mom had lying around. They'd have a few solid recipes and many, many questionable ones. I guess people would buy these books just based on the photos, because the ingredients and steps didn't make sense. These videos are like watching those cookbook crews try to transition into TV without actually changing anything. All the nonsense you can hide in a photoshoot becomes painfully obvious with this level of inspection.
"Holiday balls."
I am sooooooo curious about your trip to Evermore.
Love the lipstick! 😅
this is the best thing to see after getting off work, can't wait to eat lunch and have a jenny double feature ❤❤
for the record, the "acorns" she puts in the kwanzaa cake are just. corn. literally just corn. you can buy it at trader joe's
I thought it just looked like Corn Nuts but I didn't know enough about acorns to dispute it
Her crow💕
I have to point out that the “Michaela” Sandra Lee mentions is, in fact, Andrew Cuomo’s daughter.
this is cursed knowledge
I lost it when she just poured Hypnotiq into a glass 😭
Is that what it was?? Oh my god
I honestly love the "hot glue a plate to a decorative crow" idea
always thought i was the only one who though orange slices were like the bugs in that scene in the lion king
Omfg the dramatic irony of her thinking the baked potato ice cream will be an artisanal savory ice cream 😭😭😭
The taco chocolate steak recipe was truly next level. Thank you Jenny, and thank you Sandra
I thought at first she was maybe going for a kind of chocolate mole sauce, which isn’t that crazy, but the onions and jalapeño and garlic and wine is just… it’s so much and there’s no way all those flavors mesh
The gingerbread man drink straddling had me crying
Jennie saying "no no no no no" to mandarin oranges is pretty genuinely traumatic. They are gross.
she cant give numbers for the cake measuring because with the amount of frosting the length of the licorice would change for each person who makes it
She could at least drop the formula to solve for licorice length
Totally lost it at “ha ha! She’s got a husband!” 😂😂😂😂
it's wiggling
Voting every month has finally paid off, Aunt Sandy finally won
This is how I find out savory ice creams are a thing
Wow, Sandra Lee recipes gave her a purple mouth!!
I missed the poll this month but I’m so glad Sandra Lee won! Two underdog topics in a row?! Hell yeah.
We did it folks
Together we can do anything
This video gives such similar energy to the Hallmark video, which is my favorite video so we are winning today
YES
YES!!! AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Omg your lipstick looks so pretty!
Yay, what a birthday treat, thank you!
🌟🌸HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! 🌸🌟
Holy! I didn’t expect my girl Sandra to win. So hyped
