Ramble: Magic Beyond Words: A JK Rowling Story

Last time I used vimeo pro it didn't work for like at least 80% of you guys but this is our only option because A&E is trying to turn this into a giant copyright dispute on youtube and even if I felt like suing them over a patreon video the video would stay blocked for at least an additional 30 days (and also my account would receive a strike and lose some uploading capabilities, and I would then have to also dispute the strike).

Although they don't advertise this Vimeo appears to try to prevent people from watching any content on mobile without using their app or logging in on browser. If you don't want to make an account, you should be able to view it fine on desktop without logging in!

Well Jenny definitely made the right call that there would be some not-quite-John-Williams-soundtrack music at some point! It was most obvious at around the 19:00 mark as Joanne is writing furiously and the camera pans down to the magical forest at her feet. This was a fun commentary. Too bad about the sound mix, but Jenny did acknowledge this later and corrected it the next time she did one of these (Christmas Prince 3)

That owl ornament is definitely a repurposed necklace because I had the exact same one in middle school lmao

I really like this format but you need to lower the audio of the thing you’re watching or pause. It makes it really hard to hear you as the film is talking over you.

Insane fact about me: when I was around 8 or 9 my mom bought this movie on iTunes when it came out and it was on our family iPad. So every time we went on road trip I would watch this movie (not having seen/read ANY of the harry potter movies or books), so I've watched this about 20 times and unfortunately know it word for word lmao.

e
em · March 16, 2022

I just noticed... The book that 'Joanne' is holding when she first gets the book in the mail is definitely not the edition of the book she would have received. Rather than the long-bearded Dumbledore featured on the back of the book, at first it had a young short-bearded brunette wizard guy on the back. Not nitpicky at all, right~? (And of course the next shot shows that very information in a 'goofs' bit. Whoops!)

F
Fiona Gray · October 18, 2021

This is so funny. I go to uni in Edinburgh, where she wrote the books and after you walk around for a while you realize that it was all just inspired by actual things and history in the city. Examples: one of the student union buildings is called Potterow (someone just graffitied over it and it says 'otterow' right now - which I love). Also, there's a castle on a rocky hill in the center of the city, the same way Hogwarts looks in the movie - that is visible from the cafe she wrote in. I used to work as a ghost tour guide and told historical stories about witches and showed tourists around the graveyard that has a bunch of names Rowling copied. With this film showing her walking around and getting inspiration - if they filmed it in Edinburgh, it might have been accurate!

M
Mitch Benn · June 10, 2024

I was living in Edinburgh in the mid 90s around the time JKR was writing the first book (I’d graduated Edinburgh uni in 92)… I’m fairly sure the cafe was Nicolson’s (on Nicolson st)… it’s called The Brown Medicine Co now. The cafe which made the most vociferous CLAIM to being the one JKR invented Potter in was The Elephant House on George IV Bridge which I remember opening in 1994… Last time I looked it had been burned out and hadn’t been reopened yet

F
Filemon Tursas · October 14, 2021

no offense but it's kinda hard to make out what you're saying because the film audio is so loud

N
Narcissa Deville · October 13, 2021

When I was younger I was so inspired by JKR because of where she came from and I always wanted to be a writer, and honestly it felt like such a betrayal for her to be a TERF. I'd like to see a sequel to this called the Radicalization of JK Rowling in which it's explained how she was sucked in by the transphobic movement to become who she is.

M
Matthew Driver · December 7, 2021

I feel real silly. This is my second watch through and only now realized the sister is the sister and not her editor. Like, through it all I was imagining the sister as a ridiculously committed editor working for little to no pay.

S
Sophie Cleverly · October 11, 2021

This was hilarious - particularly because I'm a children's author and I kept imagining how bizarre it would be if someone made a movie like this about me. Like there are lots of random references to real things in my books, but someone trying to guess which ones would never get it right. However I did genuinely have one of those moments where a teacher said I was rubbish at writing, so I'm sure any future Lifetime movie directors will be pleased with that... Also was absolutely not expecting the guest appearance from my 2010s owl necklace lol

S

S
Sophia · October 10, 2021

Wait I'm kind of new to jenny's patreon. What happened to her Barbie video? Is the project on hold?

r
run_away · October 10, 2021

I think Barbie is on hold until Evermore is out, Beanie Babies is shelved for a while until she can figure out in what direction she wants to take the video, and sounds like Evermore is delayed for a bit until Evan Hansen, which sounds like a less production-intensive video. Could be wrong on those though, my memory isn't the best. Could be that Barbie was shelved due to copyright fears, though I don't think so.

A
AW · October 10, 2021

Okay this is a tiny stupid nitpick, but I'm curious if this movie was written by North Americans, because of the thing with the "because you went to a public school" scene about her not getting accepted into Oxford(?) Don't Brits call their private schools that you have to pay tuition for "public schools" and their public schools that are funded by taxes and are free "state schools" and so going to a public school in the UK wouldn't be a signal of being lower class..?

We have snack trolleys on trains but they aren't wooden and don't have giant lollipops, more like crisps and mars bars and bad sandwiches.

M
Michael DeBellis · October 5, 2021

M
Michael DeBellis · October 5, 2021

I think Public School in the UK means the opposite of in the US. They are boarding schools like Hogwarts (minus the magic). Although I don’t see why that would prevent her getting into Oxford. In any case I thought it was driven by scores on standard tests, I remember English friends telling me about the pressure on “A levels” which I think were the tests on graduating what we call high school.

p
pp247678 · October 5, 2021

Yeah generally public schools are the 'posh' ones that charge fees to go to them, as opposed to state schools. Oxford is difficult to get in to, you have to do additional entry tests. It's been criticised in the past for only allowing in students from rich backgrounds, though they are trying to change that image (since university tuition fees in England are capped at £9250 per year currently for all universities, which you'd also get a student loan for which has pretty good repayment terms etc, so it's not only the rich that could afford Oxfords fees etc). High school in England finishes at 16 when you will do GCSE exams in around 8/9ish subjects and then college is generally from 16-18, where you'll either do one subject full time as a vocational qual (usually with fewer/no exams, more portfolio work etc) or A-levels, where you choose 3 (sometimes 4) subjects to do with exams at the end. Some universities (like Oxford) will only really take A-level students as an entry requirement, though most universities will take either A-levels or the equivalent level vocational qual. And that is your crash course on the English education system lol I work in a college myself and deal with university applications.

This was filmed in BC! A lot of the actors are Canadian which is why some of the accents aren't great. The bookstore she has the event at near the end is Munro's Books in Victoria and I think when she's mocking Portuguese cheating guy's accent they're down Helmcken Alley in Bastion Square (which is apparently very haunted so.......spoooooooky). J
JoshuaMartian · October 5, 2021

• I don't know if it was intentional but I loved seeing the origin of the chummy low-class accent she uses in her books, in the form of her kindly landlord. • I love the wonder in her friends voice when she's like "Wow, you've written seven books of an unpublished fantasy novel series?". In real life, she'd probably be trying to mask her pity and thinking "God, PLEASE don't ask me to read them" • Maybe they shouldn't have included her coming up with problematic banking goblins by suggesting that's how she sees actual bankers, as horrible mouth breathing sub-humans. • Gotta love the continuation of the 'creativity = looking at things' trend in biopics.

D

J

My favorite part of this movie is how it tries to convince you that J.K. had all seven books planned before even publishing the first one, but I guess they also didn't show a Korean lady with a tattoo of a snake or something who tells Joanne she's cursed to do her job forever or something. I'm getting flashbacks to seeing this on TV when it came out. Honestly, they were snubbed. Cyberbully stole that award!!

You take that back! Cyberbully is a masterpiece

s
starrydewdrops · October 4, 2021

Woah I’ve actually seen this before!!! Absolutely wild, I completely forgot about it. Loved your commentary but if you ever do a similar format video I think it would be cool if you either paused the movie or lowered the volume when talking about it because it was kinda hard for me to process both sounds at once; I had to backtrack a lot. I hope I don’t sound to whiny, I really love all you do! :D

T
The Tinkers! · October 4, 2021

So glad that you were able to find a way to post the ramble! I always like having the movie clips included but I think you needed to turn down the volume of the movie or just run the captions, it was hard to hear your commentary over the video. Thanks for covering this wild movie that I had no idea existed!

Tim Bates · October 4, 2021

Best part of the movie for sure, but I am honestly amazed that one of the specific parts of the Harry Potter mythos this film chose to draw attention to was the Goblin bankers; a part of the franchise which, even a decade ago, was already being seen as problematic, and which has, since then, only grown more so. It'd be like if the movie showed Jo witnessing a parent cruelly enslaving their children, and been whimsically inspired to create House Elves. PS, as a Brit, I can confirm, this is 100% accurate, owls are everywhere.

P
Pterranodon · October 6, 2021

*Jo walks around a museum showcasing the horrors of slavery* "Hm, what if... they actually LIKED it?"

"It's because you went to a public school" omfg the actors must have been clenched https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_school_(United_Kingdom)

T
Tori G · October 4, 2021

that line really threw me for a loop because i knew that public school doesn't mean the same thing in British English, and the British version doesn't make sense in context.

I’m lowkey sad they didn’t include Dobby in this. Fun fact: when I was a kid I had such a bad phobia of dobby I had to be sent to exposure therapy. They would print out little pics of him and make me look at them. Anyway, now I love him and I want him in this >:((

R
Richard Reeves · October 4, 2021

I don't get how the green screen effects are so poor in those vehicle interior scenes. I can't tell if they were even trying to match up the lighting sources. I hardly ever watch cable TV. Is this normal SFX quality for TV movies? Have I been spoiled by recent streaming shows?

B

I also thought the mirror scene would just be her looking at her house & daughter lol. I like how the ghost mother was superimposed over the daughter though, almost completely obscuring her from view. Also I am from the UK and can confirm that all trains have trolleys with sweets being sold by lovely old ladies. And all of our schools look like that.

S
Steven Clark · October 4, 2021

I'd like to think that they called him "Postal Troll" as a reference because he looks so much like the goblins from Troll 2.

I Personally can't wait to see the film adaptation of the life of Addison Cain, where we see her become inspired to write her VERY ORIGINAL werewolf torture porn.

K
Kyan Krumdieck · October 4, 2021

Embed didn't work but link did for me! Maybe the full watch along format is what triggered the take down? Or they have hair trigger take down on anything j k Rowling related to try and reduce the hate towards her? Lol

M
Michael DeBellis · October 4, 2021

Also, there was some major problem with the Internet this morning. Apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and others were down and some are still down. I don't think people are certain what the problem is but it seems to be a problem with the DNS servers that route from a URL to an IP address so if there is a problem for some people it may be related to that.

C
Cathal · October 4, 2021

The embed works for me! Your commentary while the movie was playing was hard to hear but this was so funny, I can't believe how crass these cheapo biopic movies are. It really doesn't do its subject any favours by implying that JKR just like... saw in real life everything that was in the books and transposed it into the book with no creative transformation of any kind. People also don't talk about how good Rowling was at self-marketing - she took her rags-to-riches life and crafted a really media friendly narrative out of it, she knew how to sell herself and she was clearly very business savvy. Now that she's A Problematic Author she's lost control of her narrative somewhat, it's not really hurting her career though.
