OMG the China Beach inserts never stopped being funny. This is a masterpiece, a hugely enjoyable watch, assembled and delivered with all of the skill, meticulousness and humor we expect from Jenny. Even though this was a main channel vid I just now got around to watching this because as a Patreon sub I'm working backward thru the timeline watching ALL the rambles, etc. in reverse order. Anyway, I briefly considered not watching this yet for spoiler reasons because in a later ramble Jenny dismissed Buffy pretty harshly and implied TVD (er, VPD) was better, so maybe I'd want to watch it... I put VPD on my watchlist a couple days ago without looking, then discovered it was 8 seasons of 20+ eps each and said NOPE. This format is the only way I could have consumed that show, I would have lost patience almost immediately. People do like different things. No matter what, this was brilliant and I enjoyed the heck out of it!! "NO JENNA!"

late to the party here but fun fact re: setting: VA has a town called Fall's Church, and there is a school in the same county (not in Fall's Church itself) that was called Robert E Lee High School, but last year they renamed it after John Lewis, a black civil rights activist and politician. I'm from the UK originally but lived in Fairfax County not far from Fall's Church for a few years as a kid and knew of the high school so when I was back living in the UK and picked up the books (never saw the show - this has been my wonderful introduction) I was like 'oh cool that's kind of where I lived but fiction?' Slightly disappointed they renamed it in the show but also not because of the hamming up of that confederate stuff. Yikes

Thanks for the comment man! I suppose the trouble Joss Whedon’s gotten into with his personal life the past few years may have lead to some backlash against his prior works, even making them seem hypocritical to an extent. But I totally agree with you, the works haven’t changed! What they were saying and have said has not changed! Buffy still holds up for me as an incredibly multilayered emotional resonant show.

I’m honestly surprised you’re not a Buffy fan. I guess I should give VPD a watch, because based on your video essay, I’d still say Buffy is the superior show, but I’m open to discovering something new. Thanks for the video!!

Ah, awesome! They released it! The world is a better place! Even as I reveled in the 2.5-hour glory, savoring each and every China cutaway, during the whole thing I kept wondering in the back of my mind, "Huh, this shares so many elements with Buffy; I wonder what she thinks of that?", only to get that "At least it's better than BUFFY" stinger at the very end. Now I feel like a chump. But I want to know more! Does anybody know if Jenny is on record anywhere with a few sentences of Buffy takedown?

All that time I gave to this show a few years ago has finally paid off by having all the context necessary to fully enjoy this video, and it was as great as I had hoped it’d be. Also thanks for putting the chapter feature in, that’ll make it so much easier to watch highlights or something in the future. And as another comment mentioned, the lost post-it note bit was amazing. Also I saw that a potential Originals video along with other CW videos probably won’t happen now after all this hassle, which sucks because I would have loved to see them, but I understand. Hopefully there’ll be a better way of distributing and monetizing them eventually or something.

I’ve never seen VPD but I’m watching The West Wing at the moment and the only black executive assistant in the White House is called Bonnie... so now my headcanon is that this Bonnie grew up to work in the West Wing but she just still is a witch. I’d like to see Aaron Sorkin make that show.

Whoever’s in charge of marketing at the CW really dropped the ball by not collabing with Bath and Bodyworks on an official TVD vervain lotion with an in show storyline where characters complain about so many humans wearing it

I watched all of it at last; another great video! The China Beach Ads cutting in unexpectedly every now and then was hilarious, and the way they would cut off abruptly (at a slightly different point each time) only seemed to make the joke funnier! It got to the end, and I remembered that this video would be the first time my name would be in the credits. A pretty cool credits sequence to boot!

Haha chiming in abut an offhand comment. I'm not sure about other countries but in Canada you shouldn't donate a book to the library if your intent is to support an author. Authors are actually awarded a yearly royalty-type-thing based on how frequently their books were checked out in public libraries. But this program excludes books donated to the library. So the best thing to do is request that your library order books from authors you want to support. If you have books you want to get rid of, donate them to a school library or prison.

I got married near the film location for VPD, and on the day of the wedding all of my bridesmaids were late because they got sidetracked finding all the set pieces in Covington. I never watched the show myself so when they told me that they got lost ‘Vampire Hunting’ I was very confused! Getting this context makes it so much funnier to me lol. Thanks Jenny!

Hearing Jenny mention and then seeing footage from H2O was an experience because my ramble submission for last month was almost "Unfathomable (H2O: Just Add Water, Series 2, Episode 26, Available on Australian Netflix)" because I happened to catch that season finale on the family TV (my youngest sister is obsessed with mermaids; she has seen every episode of all mermaid related content on Netflix multiple times and honestly? I kinda get it) and something about it radiated such perfect Jenny critique material energy. It was so validating to realize I was right on the money. It still might get submitted in a future ramble, but at least that month the siren song of "If you want a vision of the male horse girl equivalent, imagine a guy holding a large fish — and that's his only picture." was too strong to deny.

The running jokes in this one were really good. When the crow came back for the series finale after you set him up as never reappearing 2 HOURS earlier I cheered. And that's not even saying anything of China Beach, racism post-it, "NO! JENNA!", etc.

Incredible... I thought I'd have to watch this in a couple segments, but I couldn't stop watching. I watched all of Vampire Diaries (caught up on the first 3 seasons then watched from 4 on while it was airing), and then all of The Originals (surprisingly better in some ways), so I was sort of a fan of the show, but not the sort that would have watched this because I was a fan of the show... If Jenny hadn't done it, I probably would not have watched a 2-1/2 hour retrospective and analysis of any CW show... other than Supernatural. But even I wouldn't demand someone watch a show with 15 seasons.
