Ramble #106: Themed Hotels Tier List

At first when this topic won I thought, what can I set in frame that represents a themed hotel? But I actually pulled together a fair amount. I wonder if anyone can identify them all.

I saw a lot of people in the comments of the last post mentioning issues with casting from the Patreon app. I'm currently trying to leverage what clout I have to get them to make a Patreon smart tv app, which I think would simplify the process. I'll give updates as I learn them!

HUGE missed opportunity at 2:16:50... they should've made the giant moonshine equipment in the middle of the room ALSO be a functioning bathtub.

I stayed at the hotel next to California adventure once, and after the park closed they ran the world of color fountain show at full volume about 4 times in a row (presumably for testing). Back to back to back Disney music medley blasting into the hotel room at midnight was not the most luxurious experience. Better than construction noise though I think!

Great video, Jenny! Thanks for including west Edmonton mall. As an Albertan, I’ve commented on it before as being super dated now but used to be the coolest destination for western Canadians to go to. I’m surprised that you never covered any of the “Ice” hotels. There is one in Quebec Canada. They are definitely immersive but look very uncomfortable lol.

The tents from the field of the cloth of gold were cloaked in real gold cloth! Henry VIII and the king of France were having a dick waving contest (now that bit is figurative)

I think I have the perfect movie rec! The Night of the Hunter (1955). not as iconic as psycho but extremely cozy horror/thriller vibes. acclaimed southern gothic I watched it with a friend with zero clue what it was and we had a great time. a surprising amount of animals in it. and very strange, fun, interesting to experience what a movie was back then. great visuals too.

not so fun fact: the port orleans riverside hotel used to be called 'dixie landing' for about nine years before it merged with the french quarter hotel, and it was specifically themed to the antebellum south. so it's not icky in a tone-deaf accidental sense (which would be bad enough), but it was an intentional connotation they were drawing on. it's less of a bug, more of a feature, that sort of thing. they just kind of changed the name, and later refurbished it to princess and the frog and hoped it would provide enough exculpation. but i feel like they could have gone further to distance itself from the rancid history and the approval of it the resort conveys. i found this out right before my family and i were supposed to stay there, and i really was not upset when that trip ended up getting cancelled.

Laughing so much at the Bass Pro Shops Pyramid hotel. My husband and I were driving through Memphis and we stopped by and there was a guy on the shop floor who would not stop hassling us about booking a stay at the hotel. We tried explaining that we don't live in the US, we're not coming back to Memphis anytime soon, this was literally a once in a lifetime trip and he would not take no for an answer. We missed out!

i never thought of it as a themed hotel but trixie motel has a similar concept as the madonna hotel, rich old lady making a fun hotel with themed quirky rooms. the themes are on that chrysanthemum room with a lot of flowers side tho

Zoë van Dijke · September 29, 2026

YAY I honestly agree with all of these takes!! My friend and I stayed in the phantasialand FLY hotel this year actually, and it's definitely only for people who feel comforted by small spaces (like us lol), the theming is so cute, our beds had pilot names and "travel" tally marks on it, and we got a cute binder with in-universe info, postcards and a steampunky version of the park map. You also get acces to the hotel bar which is also veery themed and chill to hang out in (which you wanna do cuz your room is so tiny), plus you can walk around the coaster at night and climb all the way to the top (which gave me massive vertigo but what did I expect from climbing a rollercoaster). Anyway seeing it on this list was a fun surprise! Staying at the Efteling hotel is still one of my dreams, I live very close to the park so I never really have an "excuse" for an hotel stay, but seeing the rooms.. aahhh I gotta, someday, you've convinced me again.

When our kids were little, Great Wolf Lodge was their idea of heaven. They loved the water park, loved Magi Quest, loved the elevator, loved the rooms (occasionally we even got a Wolf Den type of room). We visited the nearest one many years in a row. It's cheesy, yes, but we have so many good memories wrapped up in GWL.

This was such a great video, I’d love to see more stuff like this! 😭💖 My family went to Disney in 2006. I genuinely believe the DVD they sent us showing off every single hotel package is the reason why I love videos like this now. My sister and I watched that thing so much, it basically is an Oscar winning film at this point. Hysterically, we stayed in the Port Orleans Riverside Resort. I vividly remember being disappointed in the lack of theming in the room, even though I was literally 13. This video has validated little kid me. I did think the hotel was so pretty at night. Walking back to our room after dark felt like a beautiful dream of softly lit pathways, so they did something right!

I recently stayed at the Madonna Inn, and the hotel and all of its wild pink accoutrements was in fact the brain child of the eccentric Mr., not Mrs., Madonna. Mr. Madonna struck me as very secure in his masculinity; Mrs. Madonna as blessedly long-suffering.

E
Elyse · September 23, 2026

The Bass Pro Pyramid room feeling lux is not at all surprising to me! Johnny Morris (Bass Pro owner) also owns Big Cedar Lodge in Branson, which was a quick drive away growing up, and all the details are genuinely beautiful - lots of high-quality materials, wrought iron and stonework and wooden beams everywhere...my family stayed in a cabin once, and we still go to the restaurants on special occasions. Even went to a Thanksgiving dinner there once. The whole place is $$$ but Johnny is known to be extremely detail-focused so everything looks fantastic. Also part of the golf course at Big Cedar collapsed and revealed a beautiful cave system lol - thankfully no one was hurt.

I share your distrust of hotel rooms that are musty, too ornate, or couldn’t possibly be maintained properly. I even tend to trip out on dust and moisture in other peoples’ homes or in workplaces. Consequently very few of these places looked appealing to me at all, though I enjoyed your ramble immensely as usual.

A
Alexandrea · September 22, 2026

I just learned about the Sunset Inn and Suites in Illinois. Im just very charmed by it, but in a way where idk if it would be super cute or a nightmare. I love how even though all the rooms are intensely themed, they all have giant leather recliners in the middle. And i also love how one of their rooms is the Executive Suite, which some might say is just a normal hotel room, but i chose to believe the theme is ‘90s businessman on a work trip.’ Im just very charmed by such an intricately themed hotel in the middle of nowhere. It looks well maintained! But unfortunately i am very freaked out by the dust potential

f
florence dee · September 21, 2026

For the Efteling Grand Hotel, no the rooms are not themed unfortunately... Maybe it's supposed to be its own story, so it's themed to itself? I haven't looked into it because last time I checked it was booked solid. If initial hype slows down a bit I hope to finally stay there and then I'll look into it. It is however reallllly cool that you are staying literally inside the park. Like, there's a terrace with a view of the Meer van Fantasie. If you're willing to split up your booking again, I think doing one night in the Grand Hotel would be really cool. From what I've seen from just visiting the park and looking around the ground floor it looks beautiful.

J

Omg I don't like waterparks and I LOVED Rulantica, completely regretted only spending a day in it. I spent my trip between Europa park (doing the pirates ride about three times), the Colosseo sauna/pool, and staring at everything in Rulantica cause I thought it was so cool and their mascot is so cute. Next time I'll just spend three days in there and do the slide that has a vortex inside fifty times. Also Puy du Fou looks great but as a French person I just can't deal with the fact it was founded by a horrible extreme right wing man and he uses it to do weird nationalist propaganda shows. I feel it's a blessing for tourists to not know about him lol, he's just so evil and gross.

It's not quite a "themed hotel" but the Liberty Hotel in Boston was built in the historic Charles Street Jail. The lobby kept most of the original atrium (narrow catwalks where guards would patrol in front of the cells etc). There are several bars/restaurants in former cells. I haven't stayed there and I'm not sure if I would. There's something kind of in bad taste about the high-luxury concept overlaid on a jail that was apparently shut down for violating prisoners' 8th Amendment rights. I feel like it's just asking to be haunted.

J
Jenny Nicholson · September 15, 2026

Oh wow I think I ate at one of their restaurants when I was in boston for a wedding! Wasn't the lobby layout a "panopticon" style prison?

re: problematic, no we do realise that the tipis and feathered headdresses aren't great, it's taken longer than in the US (which makes sense, i guess) bu it is catching on. the "africa" themed hotel has also been criticised as of late, because their idea of africa is unfortunately not great and pretty stereotypical.

Redesign Ideas for princesses - Snow White could have a cute little cottage room with a bed with her name carved on it, as well as fake windows (plus fake shutters to dramatically open the window) - Cinderella would have a grey stone room with a patchwork blanket and more fake windows and more fake shutters, as well as a mannequin kids can put dresses on - Aurora would have a grey stone room with a dramatic purple canopy bed (with a crown on the top) and a (obvs fake) spinning wheel in the corner of the room - Ariel would have a stone room with a bunch of random shelves kids could put their toys on, with a bed in the middle, as well as a light at the top middle of the room made to look like a skylight - Belle would have a room filled with bookshelves (I literally have no other ideas) - Jasmine would have a room covered in pillows and blankets with curtains all around, as well as a magic carpet by the bed for ultimate play - Mulan would have a room with fake cherry blossoms, as well as a fake view on the wall of the great wall of china and a little tent to feel like your in the cute camp - Tiana would have a swampy room with lots of fake trees as a small pond with lilypads and a little kitchen with a bed behind the counter - Rapunzel would have a room based on the tower with tile floors, a fake window, fireplace (with the lantern painting) and lanterns hanging around a purple canopy bed

J

I think Hotel Matamba should've gone into the top tier as an extremely immersive themed experience of the Animal Kingdom hotel

S
Samantha Chapman · September 12, 2026

Here to talk about our dear departed original Royal Rooms at Port Orleans riverside. (If you circle back to POR later in the video then I apologize!) Look these things up because they were beautiful! The immersive storytelling wasn't really there but I spent one night in one and it was the cutest place to be down with covid ^^; There was a recent remodel that ruined all the charm, but the OG rooms had a pattern in the carpet of the Carpet from Aladdin, the Footstool-dog from Beauty and the Beast, Magic Lamp-shaped faucets in the bathrooms, and headboards over the beds with an LED fireworks show you could trigger wtih a button. And for some little bit of real immersion, a paper scroll with a letter from Princess Tiana welcoming you to the room. (Able to be kept in a theme park binder)

The lobby in the EftelingWonder hotel was sadly overhauled to an industrial (I wanna say steampunk but that would be too much) vibe and now they charge a lot more for their food, which doesn't even come with one vegan option. They also got rid of the staff at the check-in and you have to do it yourself via app. It's so sad because I liked it before a lot more.

E

Omg the Madonna inn... I grew up in SLO county and we'd get birthday cake from there every year. I feel like there could be a California based quirked up retelling of the Eloise books set in that hotel cause it's such an interesting place to grow up going to. We'd get breakfast there sometimes and we'd get hot chocolate in these massive challices covered in whipped cream and everything was so weirdly shaped that just sitting at a booth felt like you were in a jungle gym. My sister and I would go to the gift shop whenever we finished eating and it was such a sensory overload I honestly can't even picture what it looked like anymore even though ik for a fact I'd probably spent 60% of my time there in that gift shop. Awesome place

I stayed at the GWL in the poconos a few years ago with my college friends as a spring break trip lol. I stayed at Paradise Pier right before it transformed into Pixar Place. I could already tell the overlay was going to be pretty cheap and unimaginative. Paradise Pier felt like it meant to be permanent. There were sea shells in the tiles of the bathrooms. The furniture was surprisingly of a higher class than I imagined. The dresser came with neat seaside theming worked into handles and knobs. They had little statues of Lifeguard Mickey that functioned as nightlights. Even some of the artwork in the halls did a good job of giving ambiance without overstuffing the place with characters. Leave it to Disney to not understand when they had a good thing.

Fantome Sauvage · September 9, 2026

As a former circus artist (I was doing aerial silk),I'm always sad to hear about how clowns are perceived by the public nowadays. To me they really are circus rock stars. As a aerial girl,I just needed to be good in my field, but they need to be good at literally everything. Historically, they make their own costume and makeup, they need to create a character, do crowd work, juggle, do acrobatics, balance objects, balance ON objects, be able to perform with animals, do handstand, hand to hand, be able to be base and flyer... I really wish to see them being more appreciated in the future despite their iconography being cheaply used and abused in horror. Oh, and thank you for so many cool travel ideas, especially with so many in my own country (France) where I can easily go with the kids! Next time, since you like themed parks and animatronics, you should gotoNantes and check "Les Machines de l'ile". They have giant animatronics you can travel on, beautiful caroussels.. Just check out their website, I'm sure you'd be a huge fan. And they have lots of lore.

The problem is that fantasy rooms are loved by two distinct and opposite clientele: families with children, and couples who want to have roleplay sex. The layout of the room is all different for the two use cases, but hot tub in the middle and mirror over the bed makes a lot of sense for one and not the other.

a
asterets · September 8, 2026

wrt the lack of youtube mirror, i dont mean to be all "ooo my lobster is too buttery", but when the video is this long (which i love) i generally like to be able to watch it in more than one sitting, and the patreon player does not remember my place in the video. not having that feature (plus the player just in general sucking compared to youtube's on mobile) makes it kind of suck to watch. not that my individual small payment means anything in the grand scheme of things, but losing the youtube mirrors for good makes me less inclined to stay subbed

Not to be too annoying, but if they want to cater to families I do think two bunks is better. You can sleep 2 kids on each twin in you need to, you can't put four kids on a queen bed.

L
Lexi Lily · September 8, 2026

I think this definitely depends on the age/size of the kids and their general comfort with sharing small spaces though, no? And in my experience, families with four or more kids will prefer double rooms with pull out sofa beds or just book multiple rooms. Trying to cram two squirming 6 year olds into a twin size top bunk is not for the faint of heart.

This is a real treat; I kept thinking surely this would be finished soon and you just kept having more and more, really makes for a broad view. One note on the Puy du Fou section; the park is sadly part of a fascist push to redefine history in France, which mars some of the good memories I had of it as a kid just watching the shows there. Also Clovis was a Frankish / the first French king - so something around him probably wouldn't be actual viking themed? Strange to make everything food wise fish though, unless for some reason they were going all in on his conversion to christianity lol

Slight clarification as a biology nerd: the sun spider Jenny described is in fact another kind of *arachnid* separate from true spiders, scorpions, etc. Not an *insect*, which as a rule of thumb includes all six-legged bugs like ants, beetles, flies, etc

J
Jeremie · September 6, 2026

I’m super surprised to hear about Puy du Fou themed hotels and how good they are…! For some context, the idea for this theme park around French/European history came from Philippe de Villiers, a very conservative politician. He’s a frequent guest on the French equivalent of Fox news. Historians have also criticized the way history is depicted in the park: for instance, they show the 1789 French revolution (the one that ended the absolute monarchy) as this bloody and anti-religious movement. So it’s a controversial park to say the least. That being said, I’m glad to hear Jenny’s views on the hotels.

I'd love to know what you think of the Alton Towers Hotels! The main hotel is kinda Steampunk/Explorer theme and it's really fun. It has a lot of very random different themed rooms including ones themed to Coca Cola and Cadburys chocolate, as well as hot air balloons and The Smiler rollercoaster. There used to be a Sonic room but unfortunately not there any more! We stayed in the Princess room with our daughter which was cute, although not overly themed beyond the pink carriage bed. There's also the waterpark hotel Splash Landings which is quite crazy but fun, and the Cbeebies hotel which is really only for tiny kids but my daughter did enjoy it. Think the main hotel would def be my top pick. It may be a little old but has so many fun secret surprises. Also, the restaurant has a big tree with a face 😆

When I was 13 my family did a quiz, we were asked "What's your favourite holiday destination," I said "West Edmonton Mall," and my dad threatened to disown me on the spot. So it was neat to see the Fantasyland Hotel to turn up, a hotel I have stayed in on multiple occasions as a kid and adult (the Polynesian room and the Hollywood room which appears to no longer exist), and yes the theme rooms do have hot tubs in the main room. I have occasionally thought "West Edmonton Mall might be right up Jenny's alley... if she could time travel to the early 90s," because the Bourbon Street theming and the Disney-level submarine ride are both gone. There is, however, an amusement park with (I am led to understand) some My Little Pony: FiM rides, an indoor waterpark, an aquarium, a dinner theatre, and if you stay in the hotel you never need to go outside. Probably not worth the trip up from California unless she paired it with either A) the Calgary Stampede, a ten-day annual rodeo and cowboy-themed Mardi Gras three hours south of the Mall, or B) the Edmonton Fringe theatre festival, but hey, just nice to see a local attraction make the list. (Especially since Calaway Park, an amusement park that is half-Flintstones themed despite having lost that license decades ago wasn't gonna.)

My family is from Tombstone, so when people die or get married the entire extended family all has to stay together in the Tombstone monument ranch together since it’s the pretty much the only Hotel in the area. When my grandpa died there was a single room in the entire hotel that was NOT being rented out by people attending the funeral, so this poor family had gone on this fun western themed vacation was surrounded by my crying family (most of my family was wearing cowboy hats because they’re all in ranching—so at least the themeing stayed consistent).

That 2009 dingy clown hotel room could definitely be its own level in the Backrooms Wiki. Along with its inhabitants of course, which would be a mixture of clowns that look creepy but are genuinely just trying to entertain you, and serial killer demon clowns that murder you. I know, I know it doesn't hold a candle to the sentient cars that race each other. But I'm just assuming there's a dearth of clown levels, and it's up to us to add some.

The Great Wolf Lodge that's in Washington is co-owned by the Chehalis Tribe, and thus is an interesting combination of traditional Great Wolf Lodge and Indigenous design. A
Alexis · September 3, 2026

As soon as I saw the subject of the video I was SO hoping you would include my personal local western Canadian fascination, FantasyLand. I have extensive experience staying there and would love to give you a little more info. 1) You are correct in assuming you probably won't be in the area any time soon. I live a few hours away, and the big appeal of making a pilgrimage out there (for me anyways) is the indoor waterpark in the mall. I personally love waterparks and in a place like Canada the ability to go to a heated indoor fake beach style waterpark in the dead of winter is very appealing. It is otherwise several hours away from anything a tourist would be likely to do in Canada sadly. 2) I have stayed in the Space, Africa, Jungle, and Polynesian rooms - and have gone with friends who booked other ones I was able to look in - so I've also poked around the Truck and Roman rooms. Like all hotels, the nicest rooms are the newest ones, but generally it's really quite clean. 3) It is worth noting that the space room opened about 3 years before the Starcruiser - so while it may have been inspired by the renderings from Disney it's mostly it's own thing. For the record the space room is pretty huge and has access to an emergency exit so one could argue it's even better, but I guess there's no full length mirror sized AI droid chatbot so maybe it nets out. 4) You might be delighted to learn that not only are the rooms themed, but on every floor of the hotel, the hallways are themed after the rooms on that floor - so one of the things I always like to do when I make the trip out is to ride the elevator up and down to every floor and look at all the theming in the hallways lol. I am lucky that I have never had trouble getting my friends or husband to accompany me on this particular activity. 5) As for the mirrors on the ceiling, IDK how to explain it but it's just very Edmonton. They had a massive economic boom in the 80s, hence the mall, so there's just sort of aesthetic remnants of that era throughout the city.

Your thoughts on the new clown motel are exactly how I feel about horror clowns in general who are intentionally trying to be scary. Clowns got popular in horror because people authentically found the look and the vibe creepy. A nice, simple, classic clown is already perfectly scary for most people. Clowns like Terrifier and bloody creepy clowns you'll see at haunted houses just all look like they're trying too hard. It's so gross and over the top it becomes cringey to me rather than scary. Has Jenny mentioned if any of her German themepark trips she intends to visit Spreepark in Berlin? It was the only themepark in East Germany, that, no joke, got shut down after the CEO was found to have used the ride attractions to smuggle hundreds of kilos of south american cocaine, after shipping the rides all to Peru and back again in an elaborate criminial scheme. It now gets used as a setting for post-apocalyptic movies and as a stomping ground by urban explorers. It also had a starring role in a very janky east german cult film about themepark animatronics from a ghost train that come to life and terrorise Berlin. Suffice to say, it seems right up her alley.

“Anna and Elsa do not sleep in a bed with themselves on the bedspread”. That is a bit too familiar for me. For as long as she fit into it, my daughter always wore her pajamas that looked like Elsa’s dress inside out. When I asked her why, she pointed to the screen print of Elsa’s face on the front of the PJs and explained she turned it inside out to look more like Elsa’s real dress, because Elsa doesn’t wear a dress with her own picture on it.

That Pixar hotel restaurant with the black and white photos reminds me of a dream I had a couple months back where I was eating at a diner that was Cars themed, but part of the conceit was that Lightning McQueen had died tragically and so their signature menu item was the Lightning McQueen Memorial Burger. If that was a real place those somber portraits are exactly the kind of decor I would expect to see.

I went to a really cool themed hotel in upstate NY called the Roxbury. We stayed in the Mozart room and then the vampire room and they were both awesome, but I think 1 or 2 of the largest deluxe rooms came with like escape room games and I wish we had tried to do that too.

Just went down a rabbit hole learning about the sun spider, which is actually in a separate order or arachnids called solifugae, so not a spider nor a scorpion! The are not venomous but they do run fast and I would absolutely not want to share a hotel room with one. I also found out their abdomens visibly expand and contract the little membranes around their exoskeleton when they breathe in and out and it looks really cool in a video, but yeah would not want one in my room.

I want to shout out the Kennicott Glacier Lodge in Kennecott, Alaska where I stayed recently! It's themed around the copper mine that used to exist in the town, and my friends and I were SO charmed and excited by all the details inside. The walls (in all the rooms, lobby, hallways) are covered in genuine artifacts from the mine (1920s era) like old wooden objects and curious mechanical doohickeys. They're also papered with old manifests and telegrams and all kinds of paperwork from the mine. The best part though is that they've mixed in vintage ads from the early 1900s and they are hilarious. The bathrooms are full of them, I made a point to visit every bathroom (they're all shared) so I could see all the different ads. You can also take tours of the giant mill where they processed copper and walk around the old buildings like general store, post office, etc that are preserved as a museum. Plus the area is a national park and it's gorgeous.

If you ever come back to Europe, I think Plopsaland (Belgium) might be worth a visit. It's a theme park with an adjoining themed hotel. I've never been to the hotel myself, but it's been explicitly renovated to make rooms more themed. The park itself used to be more themed than it is now, as it's slightly shifted focus to be more attractive to teens by putting in daring roller coasters, but even still, it's themed pretty extensively! (They also have branched out to Germany, and possibly other European countries, but their flagship is in Belgium).

I've stayed at the Efteling Hotel before it had its major renovation (since rebranded to Efteling Wonder Hotel post-renovation, fwiw), in an ordinary room and not a themed suite, and I found it to be very nice. It indeed had the giant boots as trash cans but also other subtle details that honestly made it feel better themed than some other entrants on this tier list. I've also been to other Efteling resorts and in my experience their rooms always have nice subtle touches - the overall level of attention to detail in that place is incredible. (But I would honestly avoid the non-renovated parts for practical reasons. I hadn't had anything especially untoward but you can just feel that you're in an old building, and they're slowly working through all of them, I think. Also, many of their hotel rooms, old and new, just seem weirdly dark to me? No idea what's up with that.) The Grand Hotel is interesting because being a luxury hotel *is* its theme. They commissioned an entire new book of fairytales *about* the in-lore Grand Hotel, and it's such a curious artefact, because, like, yeah, it's essentially just an elaborate ad for the hotel, and the stories are very basic and follow very straightforward narrative structures, *but* because they actually are coherent and have conventional narrative structures, they are somehow better stories than the original fairytales that often leave one with the feeling that none of the characters are real people and that a great deal must've been lost in translation :D Like, somehow, despite the really obvious commercial aspect, and the simplicity of it, maybe *because* of the simplicity, I ended up really enjoying the book. And, since the real Grand Hotel is essentially themed to the imaginary Grand Hotel that is the quintessence of the luxury hotel experience, I think it's intentional that the Wonder Hotel continues to represent the other fairy tale themes. I've also stayed at Hotel Charles Lindbergh at Phantasialand and while I do agree that the rooms are cramped (but the shower is normal-sized IIRC), I think if taken as a whole, from the lobby through the restaurant to the whole structure you traverse to get to your room, the hotel is still *incredible* and putting up with the small room for at least one night is a totally fair price for the whole thing as an insular experience. (I think the restaurant is open for lunch for park guests, so you can also see it that way, but I think having the experience of going through about your day in all those places without ever going outside or "outside" is very special, and the theming is very thorough throughout.) Depending on where your room is, the window in the bathroom might open to an unthemed back yard too, though :D

Regarding Jenny's concerns with the Tipi rooms: Germany and Austria were/still are obsessed with the concept of the Wild West, Cowboys and indigenous tribes. The 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and early 00s were rife with TV shows, books, parodies etc. of the Wild West to the point we're it was considered completely normal to dress up as an indigenous person with the headgear and everything for Carnival and Halloween. I remember a summer camp type thing that was themed after the wild west, including Tipies and I didn't know that it was appropriation and harmful until I was much older. They remodeled these rooms because it's slowly becoming more known as inappropriate. But yeah. Winnetou was a hit classic in Germany and Austria when it came out

The rooms were similar to the cheap Disney motels with the theming and character wallpaper, but the hotel itself was quite immersive (decorations, character breakfasts, etc.) The waterpark was also pretty great for a hotel. Last comment i promise but i'm sorry the hotel you stayed at in the dells wasn't that great. Like you said it does seem like a slap dash job with a nice looking coat of paint. Among Wisconsin natives it's kind of a well known fact that the entire town of Wisconsin dells, while fun and entertaining, is ultimately a giant tourist trap. I grew up about an hour away so every time my family went when my sister and I were kids we didn't even bother to book a hotel because we could literally just dive back home the same day and sleep in our own beds. There were like a few times we would stay at one of the water park resorts as a sort of mini vacation and we stayed at the kalahari, The wilderness resort and great wolf lodge.

1:15:21 an Africa land? Do they know that Africa is a continent made up of a lot of very diverse countries 😭 Sometimes I hate Europeans/Americans. Like you can recognise that Spain has a different culture to Italy but you can't recognise that Nigeria has a different culture to Ghana? And that within countries people also have different cultures. Bit similar to how I feel about the earlier Disney Animal Kingdom hotel when you said the decor is Africa inspired 😭 What does that mean? It's like when somebody says "Asian inspired". Japan and Korea and China and Thailand etc all have different cultures. Anyway, call me too woke or whatever but I find it annoying as a South African. (I did genuinely enjoy the video, it was very fun. But I had to say this bc it is frustrating and usually full of stereotypes. To be clear I'm not directing my frustration at Jenny but at the big companies who made these decisions.)

A
Adrian · September 1, 2026

I also noticed that whenever there was an "Africa" theme it's mostly about animals and wildlife, whereas the European or US themes are about human culture. Each room was a different old celebrity or something, and we got the Elvis room. It was just a depressing hotel room with some pictures of Elvis on the walls, and the bed was full of what I can only describe as human crumbs? Like I’m pretty sure someone with a skin condition slept there before us and the bedding was not changed. I ended up laying on top of the covers with a t-shirt spread out where my head goes and my hoodie as a blanket, with Elvis staring down at me as I attempted to sleep 🥲 But anyways, great video thank you Jenny (ˆ▽ˆ)

I never know what to say to express how much I enjoy getting to hear your thoughts, but I know so many people are intent on hating on you, so I wanted to at least say something. I’ve been a patron for years, you’ve been the background to my master’s degree and first real job, and I’m currently listening to you while sewing my wedding dress. I love hearing from you! I really agree about the whole a sun spider is just part of the experience thing. I travel SE Asia a fair bit and it's always funny to me when someone gives a bad review because of bugs in the general area or like that they left food on the outdoor table overnight and it's covered in ants now, how could this accommodation let this happen? My friend you are throwing distance from endless rice fields and ravines and jungles. What are you talking about.

I feel so bad for anyone who went all the way to Tonopah just to see the Clown Motel. Usually the only ones within 100 miles of there are us sods in mining or people in national defense that aren't high enough up the list to get Janet flights from Vegas or Cal. Bleak, ruined country even by Nevada standards. But the Belvada there is a nice place to stay (only if you absolutely have to be there in the first place), its an old early 1900's bank that was recently renovated into a hotel, so its still got a bit of its original turn of the century aesthetic but is not too dingy yet.

Someone may have already commented this, but that medieval tent one might be based on the "Field of Cloth of Gold" event between Henry VIII and Francis I. Gagged that you went to Efteling. My mom went when it first opened in the 1970s when it was just the Sprookjesbos . I would go whenever I was in the Netherlands with my Opa and Oma. I bet you loved Droomvlucht. Villa Volta is one of the first madhouses that makes you think you're on the ceiling and I love it dearly. It has a fabulous backstory that is in inscrutible old Dutch. It terrified me at 10 .

I attended a professional conference that was held ast a great Wolf Lodge, which was such a bizarre venue. They actually have very good conference facilities and, no - the conference area is not themed. The hotel WAS themed, and pretty impressive. There were kids actively playing the immersive games, characters walking around (especially in the restaurant), my room looked like a log cabin. That clown hotel makes me think of those dumb Halloween costumes of pumpkins. Like...who wants to be a pumpkin for Halloween?

I have been to West Edmonton Mall and my impression was that it's a mall that's big. Admittedly, I am not a mall person generally, and it has a couple unique things (go kart racing is the only rhing I remember off hand) but most of what I heard from locals was reminiscing about the glory days rather than thinking it was cool now. Also! A friend of mine went and stayed in the hotel there as a kid and her only real memory of it is the glass ceiling breaking over the pool and everyone having to get out immediately because the water was full of glass. Also as a kid I wanted to live in Ikea LOL.

N
Neil Dutton · August 30, 2026

Yeah the hotel gave the impression it hadn't been updated since the early 90s when I was there with my kids 10 years ago. Visiting the mall is kind of an open archeological site of what used to be a really cool mall.

I've never stayed there but i AM from alberta -- it's important to me that you know that hotel is IN the mall. you can access the mall after hours, so it's basically like you get to live in the mall. there is some theming still (there's a bar wing of the mall, that little french quarter area, a chinatown area), a waterpark, a "theme" park, a weird random huge pirate ship, sea lions (????????), an ice rink... I've been told by staff it's a sister mall to mall of america. it's truly the craziest building I've ever been in. also, i believe the spaceship rooms existed before starcruiser? and, yes, most of the rooms have tubs in the middle and MOST have mirrors on the ceiling. there's a couple that have poles for dancing. in the rooms.
