Ramble #104: Halcy-con
Best watched on VR headset.
*Another topic actually pulled ahead at the end of month, but this topic held the most consistent lead. The other topic was carried over to the new poll.
Updates: I've still been toiling in the Once Upon A Time mines, a lot of script and only like 4 episodes left to see. (This doesn't mean that's the finish line, I will now have to immediately rewatch it all to fact check myself and look for supporting clips for all my points.) Season 6 was the worst one.
Youtube mirror here! (Can weeee stop sharing the youtube mirrors publicly, you know I can see that. Small group chats or whatever are fine - spiritually the same as watching it in a room with your friends - but public platforms and large discord servers aren't. I feel bad cause I know some people prefer to watch over there but I'm going to discontinue the mirrors if it keeps being an issue.)

My favorite part of the video is watching Jenny do her best to make no facial expressions while experiencing the second hand embarrassment of “Jellical Snug Snacks” introducing themselves.
I feel like "there are people so obsessed with star wars that they would cry while remembering going to the hotel once" is the least surprising thing ever. Like it's wierd, but I absolutely buy it. That makes complete sense given what I know about like, the top 1% of nerds in a given fandom
I still haven't seen any of the Star Wars movies (I tried the first one with the kids but it was late, we were tired, and fell asleep, but I remember a beautiful image of a sky with two suns or two moons), but I really want to do so to be able to enjoy more of your content. Maybe instead of re watching your old videos a thousand times.
‘nobody wants to hear about your dream that you had last night’ got me so good I had to pause the video for two minutes to laugh
"Content for a phone call to your own mom" changed my life
I feel so spoiled by the quality of these rambles. seriously feels like a main-channel video, I've rewatched this one like four times in the last month
3:50 DASHCON ALARM
Me naming my characters in middle school like Sith Lord Razor
I gasped at the enemies-to-lovers ending to the saber duel! What could be more Star Wars?
Getting on this train very late but I was one of the “lawyers” in the Trial of Lt Croy and it’s kinda wild that I’m in a Jenny vid and she liked the trial! Very cool
New Saw movie, but its Jenny tricking her friends into larping E.T.
I'm not done with the video yet but it's so telling that there are so many 'dead' fandoms and niche ones with no new content and super strong emotional connections, and it can very much feel like a connection and a special little club, and that can be still be pretty great!! they have that, and their own little community, and a con!! but some of these people are so stubborn and rose tinted about it that it's honestly hindering their ability to make their own fun with each other in a way that can really last and be transformative and mean something, even though they've got all the pieces to have a good time in the room. like you have a con you have enthusiasm you have something tangible there but noo let's keep on kissing ass with disney and hating on a youtuber who didn't make the hotel bad and make that a backbone of the fandom experience!! idk. such an intense case of missing the forest for the trees. defending and enjoying aren't the same thing, and honestly even if you have biases it gets to a point where if you're doing way more defending than enjoying it ceases to really be fun in the first place
Saying "don't ask" about the character you made for a LARP experience you are now making an entire documentary on really exemplifies the mindset of these type of fans. They feel shame & embarrassment over having fun playing make believe and have convinced themselves the Starcruiser was a uniquely freeing experience. There are many ways to recreate that feeling but you do have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known and letting people (not actors you're paying to play with you) ask and engage
Seriously dont sabotage the mirrors! Dont ruin it yall. For whatever reason i have to tap the screen repeatedly if i watch through the patreon app. Like it doesnt know im watching :( and it goes dark. Youtube mirror doesnt do that to me.
"Thank god there's a guitar" is not a sentence one normally hears at a party.
No, Werewolf is "descended" from Mafia from the 1980s. Secret Hitler was created in 2015 BY the Cards Against Humanity people.
All the dedicated fans just make me so sad, like they are the demographic that Disney sought to exploit and it worked and then just dumped the thing they got so attached to in the garbage. I wish more fan communities could detach themselves from pouring this much energy into mega corp properties but I know there’s no helping it
Does anyone know, is there a way to watch her public videos ad-free through Patreon? I am choosing to support individual creators rather than paying for YouTube premium, but I miss watching my favorite Jenny videos without ads :-(
I don't believe there's a way through patreon, but ublock origin blocks youtube ads in your browser
MUCH to be said about folks not wanting to go to a more vulnerable and mutual LARP experience. Reeks of capitalist individualism to me. Gran of salt that this is speculation about folks ofc
You say shapeshifting powers, i say a fully articulated Ouanni costume
YouTube mirrors are how I watch on airplanes 😭😭😭 guys please don’t ruin yt ok patreon doesn’t allow offline viewing
I fall asleep to the YouTube mirrors, please stop sharing them people. It’s like $20 a year, less than most of you spend on coffee or energy drinks
I’m so sad to hear Jenny felt like she wouldn’t be welcome at this con, people can get so weird. You can’t put as much effort in to something like her star cruiser video without caring a lot about it.
ok so i know this is 100% beside the point but. jenny, you are the only other person i've ever heard pronounce it "spiders georg" like the german/austrian name (instead of just like "george"). i feel so validated!!! (my nerdy truth: i picked up that pronunciation from watching the sound of music as a kid--cpt vontrapp's first name is georg)
As weirdly hostile as these fans seem to be to you... there's something also something I love about the idea of this convention outliving the actual hotel, and a fandom potentially becoming more about it's own convention and mythos than the thing it was originally about. I kind of want this con to go on forever even though I have no intention of ever going to it.
omg i recognized that fountain area immediately! ive been to that hotel for a convention i vended at before. really lovely place and that outdoor area is great
52:15 fortnite
You don't like camping? But... but then how will you LARP Basil Hears a Noise?
As someone who LARPs, I can guarantee as long as you’re not actively being a dick and treat everyone else with respect it’s almost impossible to be “rejected socially.” Like, I showed up on day one completely by myself and was almost immediately adopted by a friend group (most of whom I’m still friends with today and literally play Star Wars DnD with them) I PROMISE it’s not that hard.
Now I kinda want some Jenny anti fan merch
I was working Mickey’s not so scary last year and there was a lady dressed as a Saja and I asked her about it and she gave me a necklace she’d made and it was tiny stacked clay versions of the scooting stones from the climate simulator. Thanks Lady!
Hi Jenny! Can you make it available to patreon subscribers to watch all of your YouTube content without ads? I’m currently trying to rewatch the vampire diaries one and I’d really like if I could watch it here rather than YouTube which interrupts incessantly
I just realized that the reason why there isn't a lot of videos out there of the Con, could be that they fear a copyright lawsuit from The Mouse. Disney is very litigious so, that would make sense and also, it does put that documentary in a sort of a weird position.
I got reminded to watch this by seeing someone complaining about Jenny's 4-hour video in a completely unrelated youtube comment section lol. Kinda wild that people are still so mad about it, but also I suspect a lot of it is just that they identify with the starcruiser in such a way that its like a part of themselves and the video thus feels like a personal insult. I know Jenny was skeptical of how people could be so invested in it, but I could see getting that emotional if you really have started viewing it as an integral part of you. I don't think anyone should be assigning that much of their self-worth to something like that (even if it was what they think), but I can understand where its coming from.
Did Jenny go there? Jenny went there
I work at a Renaissance Faire, and there is most certainly a similar "it is a spiritual experience that has healed me!" subgroup of the fanbase there as well.
People still fighting the star wars after the star wars is over
Jaw dropped at the ribbon reveal. I know you are not new to being a woman with opinions on the internet and you handled that very well but I am hurt on your behalf. I literally JUST rewatched the original video so it’s fresh in my mind and you were absolutely nothing if not fair— including praising the fantastic cast and crew for their efforts. I cannot fathom the level of disconnect with reality one must reach to have that ribbon and for it to be their favorite???
Let's deify the dead star cruiser and make the beginnings of a cult, essentially. Instead of actually doing what we liked supposedly about the dead larp hotel. What the human mind constructs to avoid embarrassment is so fascinating.
I might actually watch this on a headset.
The people who refuse to watch Jenny’s video give very “I will not shake my faith” vibes imo; not to sound like acclaimed director Randy Moore, but for some of these people, it does seem real religious….
Ooo the Chandrillan wedding dance party must have been inspired by the one in Andor, i would attend that in a heartbeat
Calling for the “friends and family” donation on PayPal is so sketchy. I’m not saying they’re scammers, but I’d like to point out that that’s the one scammers use
begging ppl to not be sharing the mirrors en masse cause me and my roomate like watching jennys patreon videos while were chilling
I really appreciate this especially because for some reason I thought after doing your four-hour main-channel video about the Starcruiser that you'd be a bit burned out on the topic. Glad you still have more to say about it!
I feel some elitism going on with the performative fans and I think it's BECAUSE of how short-lived the experience was, like "Oh it was such a wonderful experience and I'm SO sad because we actually got to go but there's so few of us!"
It’s true across the whole Star Wars fandom that uncritical performative superfans are the most detrimental thing to to the franchise. Jenny barely even likes Star Wars and yet is making better Star Wars commentary than like anyone else
Jenny, I put you on my tomodachi life island. You’re best friends with a demon called the Slinker.
The youtube mirrors are mainly how I watch your ptrn videos but being so honest if you needed to stop using them due to people not respecting the rules I would not blame you whatsoever because it really is a crappy thing for people to do : (
Like I have cried during larp before and they have been incredibly moving and impactful experiences but like… my friends wrote those stories.
As someone who goes to larp conventions and other small sci fi conventions man this would have been so fun. The whole thing about it being taboo to talk about your larp character is so real lol
Why is smolive reversed?
Can’t wait for the OUAT video!!
I didn't want to hijack anyone's comment so I'm just posting my own. Patreon has screen casting, so if anyone wants share this or other videos to a TV just look for the logo on the video and make sure you are on the same wifi on both devices. It should be pretty seamless. Hope this helps someone!
did anyone notice jenny calling spiders georg 'spiders gay-org'
I'm not familiar with the correct pronunciation, I thought that was how it was pronounced?
werewolf and secret hitler are both games in the hidden role genre, so are mafia and among us as other big examples, but i don't think one is directly a version of the other? (also if you do like hidden role games, my favorite is blood on the clocktower!! though to my understanding it needs a pretty big group to play)
petition to send Jenny to the next Halcy-Con, dressed as the pole
shouldve gone to the convergence rocking the same look
When Jenny says "I think this is pointed at me" (like here, or some of the Evermore videos) every time I think "Okay, I'm sure that's not specifically about you" and every time it is followed by footage that proves it is 100% specifically about Jenny. It's mad to be upset about a negative review on behalf of the Walt Disney Corporation!
This really makes me grateful for the continued existence of Bridge Command, which I'd really recommend if you find yourself near London.
Is that Smoliv's face upside down??
What are mirrors?
They’re basically the youtube version/copy of the video.
Come for her coverage of a niche topic, stay for her takedown of the weirdness of performative fandom
The Ouanii doll is so cute!!!!
Only seconds into what I'm sure will be a fantastic ramble but just need to call out SMOLIV getting the spotlight they deserve
Multiple panels on how to construct an original character and interact with NPCs... for an experience where the actors playing the NPCs mentally cringed and sighed if you called yourself a name other than the one you booked your room under.
banger ramble, I laughed so much
you know it's dire when somebody goes "oh thank god there's a guitar" about a room party
Loved this! And also love the thought of another show i will never watch-video, I loved your vampire diaries video.
Oh no the Vegas event. That situation has always stuck with me because I was supposed to go but I ended up selling my wristband on StubHub. The very next day filled with dread I called their customer service and they actually broke privacy protocol just to help me ensure the buyers were okay, and thankfully they were. But still those hours of not knowing was the worst feeling I have ever felt in my life.
The analogy of the guy who refuses to talk to women except service workers who can't reject him may have ended the star cruiser fans I fear. Brutally honest lmao
Great content as usual. People need to chill, she's putting in more effort to describe what she found wrong/right/interesting with something than super fans do to describe why they think it's unimpeachable. Honestly, I'd love to see some of my fandoms get grilled since despite liking them, they are problematic and having someone talk through it with actual research, empathy, and humor is interesting!
the title of one of the talks being "How the Halcyon changed your life for the better" is funny bc like, why the extra clarification at the end? were they worried someone would come in and talk about how the trip changed their life for the worse?? hey buddy the "how the halcyon ruined my credit score and strained my personal relationships" panel is on the next floor, this one is strictly positive experiences
I had no idea people were into it this much. This is one of the strangest reactions I’ve seen. DnD is much cheaper and you can do it whenever you want!
What I want to know is, when's JennyCon?
With the time, money and effort spent putting on the con & documentary, they could have fully put on a --better!--starcruiser experience.
Secret Hitler is actually the box/board game version of werewolf and was produced by cards against humanity lol
I’d always heard it called “Mafia” when I played in college, which is funny because irl Mafiosos are usually well-known in their community because they keep the locals loyal with gifts
Even if everyone involved in this documentary had a glowing experience with Star Cruiser, none of that justifies the SC’s price or any of the greedy machinations that created it. And as much as they like to point out the duration of “that 4 hour youtube video,” it certainly doesn’t feel like many of them watched the final hour of it, and that’s arguably the part they most need to see. I feel like they also need to lean more into the power of transformative fandom instead of dwelling on the past! What with the con location, decent access to funds, and dedicated fans with creative and/or tech know-how…just start your own LARP event adjacent to the Halcyon story. Act out more fanfiction like that Croy trial. Maybe SW fans who couldn’t afford SC but liked the concept will attend and then your con will grow.
Isn't Jenny's video just part of the SW:GSC fandom? I took from her video that she, the other attendees, and the crew and performers love Star Wars, and should have expected better from Disney. It wasn't like someone ripping off a tweet about how a movie sucks, it's a Lawrence of Arabia-length essay overflowing with Star Wars nerdery, footage, and personal experience. She's their people. I'd take the Marked Safe banner as a playful poke in the arm, like a gamer wearing blue declaring themselves the enemy of a gamer wearing red. But maybe *everyone else is doing it wrong.*
My wife, a devout Spring Awakening fan, thanks you for the unpopular but correct pronunciation of Spiders Georg
I had no idea you were so hated in the starcruiser community! I also had no idea there was a starcruiser community!
What happened to the big barbie movie video?
The idea that them making a documentary about it would change the narrative is wild, honestly. I don't care about Star Wars an iota, I watched your video because I like your videos, not because I had strong opinions about the hotel. No one is going to watch the video who isn't already interested in the Star Wars hotel to some degree, and I really have to wonder how much they are going to examine their own bias, if they'll bother at all.
Never watches star wars, went to cons, or liked review-centric vids but this was an interesting listen. Fandoms are kinda wild as like a thing on their own, now that I think about it
Spiritual Panels: If Jenny means to post this ramble more widely, it might be wise to edit out the critiques of the spiritual panels. Numinous experiences (valid or not, lasting or not) often happen during short, intense experiences. Camping, concerts and, yes, being part of a two-day play. People feel what they feel, even to the point of tears. I'd hate to see Jenny's very valid message about the Cruiser and where Disney is headed hijacked by even more volatile, rabbit-hole comments and discussions, this time about invalidating other people's feelings. Which, I fear, is how those points on spirituality will be taken. Some quagmires aren't worth stepping into.
i definitely believe that the star cruiser fandom will be salty with you forever because they have trauma bonded over the experience of dealing with that four hour video.
How did you get yhe smolive with an upside down face lmao
Omg, it's so cool to see so many women there! Edit: I agree with the central thesis of the video. Why WASN'T this just a big, awesome Star Wars fan LARP event?
Honestly... kinda get the sense they thought of "Halcy-con" and couldn't resist
Please guys, the Patreon video player is so janky on mobile and inaccessible on TVs. We need the YouTube mirror.
A thought just occurred to me that The Star Cruiser was probably designed to be an old ship specifically because then they could swap it to original trilogy or prequel theming if needed (idk if that was officially said but Jenny said it and it makes sense) And if it had lasted long enough to have us see The Halcyon in different eras that would’ve meant different crews and to these extremely loyal fans that retheming also would’ve been traumatic cause the characters they loved would’ve been out of commission
All you big YouTubers are friends, right? You can ask Austin Bradley to make you a furby robot alien like he did for Evan and Katelyn. He probably still has the STL files.
RE OUAT: I SO hope you find a way to pin the early seasons for trying to siphon from the spirit of The 10th Kingdom (at least the 3rd or 5th most beloved network TV mini series of the year 2000). Alas, OUAT is kind of constrained by using disney fairy tale adaptations so it can’t match some of the truly unhinged angles that series took.
I love the 10th kingdom!!!!!! Jenny please if you convince your audience to watch the 10Th kingdom so I get to talk about it more I will owe you my life
It’s always funny to me that the fandoms that get most defensive and angry against any criticism are the ones for media whose message is “love one another, be good, teamwork and friendship can overcome all evil”. Literally every time. It’s as if the criticism, no matter how valid it is, is a direct attack on the people who enjoy that piece of media. The literal thesis statement of the OG star cruiser video was “the people who paid top dollar to come here deserved a better experience”, HOW IS THAT A BAD THING TO SAY??
Okay I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels that fan emotion can be performative. I was always afraid that saying so would come off as mean and just not getting it lol. I don’t doubt that some people legit loved Starcruiser and get emotional about it, but I can’t help but be cynical about people having so much love for a corporate service industry product. You were spot on comparing it to a customer-waiter relationship. I think there are a lot of people who get into fandom more for community than loving the thing. Not that they don’t love the thing, that’s a prerequisite, but I think fandom creates a feedback loop that causes fans to get more into it than they otherwise would. And some of those fans don’t realize that what’s really making them emotional isn’t the thing, it’s the community. Starcruiser probably feels like an extra close community because it was such an exclusive experience (expensive and didn’t last long) and because they’ve found an enemy in you.
Watching this I went from "damn, I scoffed at the whole concept of this convention but these panels sound really fun, this sounds like a fun time" to "Oh god, have they started a cult around the Star Wars Hotel?"
I'd never heard of this but when you started talking about it I immediately assumed it was going to be a bunch of Starcruiser fans organizing their own Halcyon-style LARP in a hotel convention center and was like "good for them," and I slowly got more and more confused as I realized that was not what they were doing...
You could always put on a top hat and mustache and sneak into the next Halcy-Con, just saying
I found the panel on “How to Imagine the Lounge Show if Your View Was, For Example, Blocked by an Unnecessary Design Choice” especially informative.
unrelated to the video topic but i'm enchanted by the orange fish on the rightmost side of the screen. he's just so cute and pleasing to look at!
I wonder if there’ll ever be a nostalgic convention of Spirit Airlines passengers. Remember when they cramped us into the little torture seats and then charged us for peanuts? It was spectacular until that four hour video put it out of business by devoting an entire chapter 🤷🏻♂️ to hating on it.
I will admit to having been incredibly upset when I visited Six Flags over Texas after college, and the Spee-lunker cave had been turned into a Looney Tunes ride, but indeed, it was because I had hoped to ride it and feel like I was ten again, and also show a college friend the thing I had loved when I was ten.
Jenny has used the expression "to open a can of worms" in two consecutive rambles. It's a stupid thing to notice but I thought I'd share
tier ranking worms here we come
Hey, I loved those “I Love the 80’s” type shows! I think there’s a real value in vicarious, secondhand nostalgia.
The whole ‘Star Cruiser was the first time I got to be my true self’ thing hits really bittersweet for me because even though it wasn’t my experience but it’s a super common trans experience to realise they were trans through role playing on Final Fantasy 14 or World of Warcraft or something so a part of my believes that what they mean (which is best case scenario what people meant by that) but even then YOU DESERVE BETTER
Cis lesbian here, and I don't like having to admit that the lesbians on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and shipping f/f couples on Dollhouse (both shows by Joss Whedon) were a huge part of my coming out. But like, they WERE, and I just kind of have to live with that embarrassment! It's fine!
Boardgame nerd here! Werewolf/mafia (same gameplay, different themes) is an old-ass game that isn't really under copyright and Secret Hitler is a game with similar social deduction mechanics but it is a specific copyrighted game
my theory is that disney purposely sunk the star wars hotel because a lot of gen X/older millennial starwars fans are… unwell… and the company was concerned about the liability of hosting a large amount of emotionally stunted financially over invested stans in an inclosed space for 2 days
Instead of in the rest of the park, like they usually are?
I’ve never heard of Spiders Georg pronounced as “gay-org”, I’ve always read it as a funny misspelling of George
It’s a real name! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_(given_name)
I watched the Halcyon Daze trailer, and within the first 10 seconds, the director/creator reveals that she's missing her own father's 80th birthday to be on the Starcruiser. I really can't with these people who sob about "finding family" at what amounts to a themed hotel when their real family is *right there*
This wasn’t even like a short timed event (other than it closing I guess). Like…just pick a different week for your trip!
OUAT is such a guilty pleasure of mine. I binged the first few seasons with my mom when I was a kid. So so excited to hear there's a video coming soon!!!
Jenny do you know about RetroMagic? Cuz I think that’s the closest thing that currently exists to HorizonsCon!
were some of those panel descriptions ai generated? the describe your OCs one sounded like it
I was wondering that too - they're written so awkwardly that that would make sense.
That was a good one!
Omg I feel the same way about all of those fandom documentaries… there are like 90 million of them for Star Trek, and I don’t think any of them are very good 🥲 They’re so weirdly self-congratulatory, and they often don’t mention the things that were actually controversial/transgressive, so I feel like they don’t even work as a real fandom history. I feel like I should be the ideal target audience for all of these but I just can’t get into them at all
I've found a few good fandom documentaries for ones I was in--but i think you're right. Jenny's Bronycon video is the first one that comes to mind as an actually nuanced look at a fandom, but i suspect that when fandom retrospectives are told from one individual's point of view they're more likely to have that nuance
I think the problem with putting on their own starwars LARP would be that with the actual hotel experience each guest got to be made to feel like THEY WERE THE STAR of their experience (by design). In a collaborative experience of their own making it would be less fulfilling for them to have to be cast in a supporting or minor role while others got to be main characters and have more meaningful roles and interactions. No one wants to wait all year for the next Halcy-con LARP only to have to spend it being luggage smuggler #3 and not even getting to perform or sing or showcase their lore and backstory etc.
how dare you imply luggage smuggling is not a fulfilling and unique role to play in your very own star wars story
Jenny low-key went off with this one
Another stellar video Jenny! Folks please don't ruin the YouTube mirrors, they're so useful
Can someone suggest Jenny sings the whole Duel of the Fates for next month?
I, like gabillions of people, loved your 4 hour video, which came out after the hotel closure. It's not like the immersive experience got shot down because of Jicholson fans picketing. Your videos are always fair and you absolutely emphasize that your own experiences might differ from others, which is great. And you go into every event optimistically and with an open mind. You're not spreading hate, you're just documenting your trip. And your fans enjoy it. Every pro, every con as it pertained to YOUR VISIT. And I absolutely think most of these reactions were performative. 1.5 years and a shutdown? Massive pricing, lack of communication, and quickly fading attendees? Those are just facts. But my biggest takeaway was like, "The creator I support made such an impact that die-hards felt the need to create merch and a film that will not affect said creator other than adding more subscribers and followers." All of your content is just fun, funny, and genuine. I've enjoyed every single video. Also, ty for being an ally. "Spineless" is a perfect descriptor for this company. Finally, would LOVE a video about the doc after release. Thanks for another great one and I look forward to next month!
as a gay myself i've always really appreciated how consistently jenny sticks up for us, even when it's not the popular opinion. it means a lot.
I loved this, I'm glad it finally won! I didn't know anything about Halcy-Con before, and now I think I know all I need to know. The amount of time and care Jenny puts into these monthly rambles is always appreciated. Now, RE: OUAT: back before I finally watched the legendary TVD vid (cue "Mirror of my mind THE SERIES THAT BROUGHT WOMEN TO THE FRONT LINES") I *briefly* considered watching TVD first. Like, how hard could it be? Then I saw it was a network show with standard 20+ episode seasons and immediately ditched that idea. So I watched the TVD vid and didn't feel like I'd missed anything. Looks like I'm going to have to do the same with OUAT! And I'm sure Jenny's take will be better than spending (gets out calculator) 123+ hours catching up. Jenny, you are a hero.
Hearing that there was a queer focused panel there was kinda depressing on a ‘any port in a storm ig’ kinda way but also relieved cause otherwise I sort assumed everyone there had been radicalised
Please do not ruin the mirrors for me, guys. I really hate watching it on this stupid, anti-user app.
not the youtube mirrors, I rewatch them over and over as comfort background noise, and the patreon UI is just so clunky!
It really hurts my heart to hear about the fandom reaction to your video. It was such a well done video and you were clearly very honest, well-researched, and you always are willing to give the benefit of the doubt where applicable. It really does feel like you hit the nail on the head wrt the "I spent thousands on dollars on this so it was 100% perfect and I will not hear any constructive opinions on it” mental gymnastics. And the cult energy is so real... I really wish you had been able to go!! But this was a really interesting watch. Thanks for another monthy vid :)
Okay, I get the superfans on an emotional level, but .... your video did not say that the Starcruiser universally sucked. As a product, yes, hence the closing, but not that single people could not get an amazing experience. And throughout the whole video you emphasized that it was especially against the backdrop of the insane price that all the problems were really bad, which I am wondering if the documentary will be able to reconcile. This is really judgemental, but I am getting the vibe that these are some people that never had any LARP or DnD experience, and had their eyes opened by the Star Wars Hotel and did not figure out yet, that you can have these types of experiences much more easily (and cheaper!). If you think about it, imagine someone told you that all DnD, LARP and similar is forever gone from this world, then their reaction to the closing makes sense. Edit: And I wrote this before you said the exact same thing, oh well.
i have had an experience that’s not the star cruiser that idk how to share with anyone
what the freak is that orange thing from (orange eel plush)
His name is Joe Da Fish please be kind he is very sensitive
say what you will about the evermore fandom, jenny felt safe enough to go to an evermore event in costume after her video released and at no point did anyone hand her a ribbon that said “jenny nicholson’s 3 hour 40 minute evermore video sucks D:”
I genuinely believe that a lot of the defence of the star wars hotel stems from embarrassment. people don't want to have to admit that the thing they invested a lot of money and energy in was kind of mediocre, because that means they got duped and that's embarrassing. so it has to be good actually, and now nobody can check because it closed.
Eh, I don’t doubt that some people legitimately enjoyed it that much. But I think Jenny’s video made them defensive.
All these LARPers can just joint the 501st or Rebel Legion or Mando Mercs and get basically the same experience FOR FREE, anytime they want. AND a lot of the time it's for charity. Win win.
Just finished the video, I kinda need a full Patreon video of Jenny detailing her immersive ET larp now
I seriously don't understand people publicly posting the mirror links. Like, why come all the way to Patreon, pay real world money to be here, and then just . . . break the rules?
Great video as always! They really should've subpoenaed that lovely Amethia Tope for that trial. There's literally footage of her heroically alerting Croy to the rampant smuggling and presence of a vile rebel wookie! And he just blatantly ignores her! Smh
I never realized that a lightsaber duel that ends with a kiss makes me very uncomfortable until now, so yay
When I watched Jenny's video, I saw a critique of Disney: (1) their app, (2) their cutting corners (scan crates rather than play games), (3) lack of effort (minimal animatronics, which, as this con shows, could be made by fans) and (4) too costly. But I also saw praise and delight with the character actors and cast members and most of the ambience (the dining area excepted). As all that is what is what these fans are recreating in this con (not the app or crate scanning)...the vitriol towards Jenny's video perplexes me, even if it doesn't surprise me.
It sucks that they’re gate keeping, like, specifically you. Only Jenny Nichleson is not allowed at this con. That’s so hyper specific, I can’t even imagine being on the other side of such a passive aggressive hate campaign. Sorry Jenny
Ayyy lmao
Anyone lamenting how Galactic Starcruiser is gone and there will never be anything like it should look up Odyssesus - First Light. It's a sci-fi LARP where you actually play a character and actually have a role to play in the story. Mara Holmes has a fantastic YouTube video about her experience participating, and it sounds like a realization of everything Starcruiser sold itself as being but wasn't.
I think Werewolf (which is the same game as Mafia, right?) is the public domain version that’s been around forever and Secret Hilter is a branded product version of it.
Towards the end of the video when you suggested some of these Halcyon fans just try larping, I was really reminded of the defenders of generative AI. The idea that they want this experience of self-expression but without any risk or personal effort.
Also the trial of Croy reminded me of videos I've seen of the Brandywine Festival (a hobbit themed larp) because they had a trial of Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. Except the Brandywine Festival was distinctly anti- capitalist. Feels like the antithesis of this con.
I'm happy that people are able to find community through the star cruiser, but obviously this whole thing kind of reeks of people trying to over-justify the money they spent on such a lackluster experience, which is especially clear through all the backlash towards Jenny. There's also always that like fandom collective effervescence effect where the actual piece of media or attraction lowkey matters less than the community
i wonder if there’s any anti-jenny sleepers in here like there are from evermore fans but from starcruiser fans
probably a few but it’s more like internet image board weirdos with long held obsessive grudges from when she uploaded on YT regularly
i hope the guy who’s making the halsian documentary is the same guy who made the fan film recorded inside the starcruiser bathroom
At the very least we need a good portion of the doco digging deep into the writing of said bathroom short film. I say, sitting here with my “How am I… here. I wanted. To be. Erased.” full back tattoo
Is your smoliv plush made wrong?
no, he is just different. please lead with kindness. it’s not his fault.
the microwave being jail is so real
I have only been here for a month so I was wondering why the mirror yt videos are treated like kids content on the mobile app and don’t work with the miniplayer. After reading this it now makes sense to me that the mirrors have some limitations to protect from sharing but it is unfortunate to hear that there are extra limitations in place as a consequence of people sharing the videos to large groups and adding them to public playlists.
I'm going to become the Tania Head of the Starcruiser.
I feel like I’m being psyoped by the people that comment here
Wait, so someone recorded an actual documentary while they were on their Starcruiser trip, but we're supposed to believe Jenny ruined her own experience because the actors didn't want to talk to someone who was filming?
also even if that were true it would be super unacceptable. if I paid $6000 for an experience and the staff were being passive aggressive about me filming (without even bothering to politely ask me to stop) I would go berserk.
How many of you have ever felt personally victimized by a four hour long Youtube video? Listen, in the months after my fathers death I cried at: A beautiful horse, a beautiful knarled tree, seeing the Nutcraker listed as a movie on a plane... I think a lot of people have been there. But I think it's a bit crazy to not realise maybe, just maybe, the reason you're sobbing in a VR hotel lobby isn't really about the hotel 😅
I’d go see the 4 hour video in theaters
Same here! Have popcorn and a drink and watch the entire thing.
im actually hyped for this ouat video that show was my life when i was 14
This summer, I got to experience paying $150! For a once-in-a-lifetime immersive experience of letting someone I've never met do an audio recording of them weeping into their choice of Star Wars Galactic VR headsets! When they cried their Space Tears ;) , I felt suc-successful when I, uh, completed my mission. You should definitely spend $6000 dollars to eat in front of this picture of a concrete wall near the hotel I spent 2 days at 4 years ago!
STOP SHARING THE MIRRORS I HAVE NO DESIRE TO AIRPLAY ONTO MY TV ITS ALWAYS FINICKY!!!!!!!!!!!
The mirrors are amazing I put these in my tv while I’m baking :(
I shared three patreon videos with one friend and we called them the Forbidden Jennys. She got a patreon subscription eventually, but we still call them The Forbidden Jennys. "have you seen the latest Forbidden Jenny?" so it goes
Spiders Georg reference in the year of our lord 2026 😭😭
Did they really go there? They really went there!
me when people say “you can tell jenny didnt even go cus she called it a hotel.” she really went there!
Slept with this on while I unknowingly developed an ear infection. In my sleep addled mind I thought Jenny was cursing me to lose my hearing and I was very upset lol
re: the documentary, I still agree with Jenny's point that the final word on the Star Cruiser is that it went out of business. Sure it was fun, but it was, objectively, a failure
I can sort of imagine how being a super fan of something like this could be isolating and community-building; an extreme minority got to do it and presumably even fewer were this into it, it's under a ton of scrutiny from the wider internet so there are hostile outsiders constantly present, and it apparently fostered a weirdly emotional headspace. There are people who get emotionally distraught at DnD games, so it doesn't shock me that some people in this little microcommunity ended up having some big feelings. And since there's a clear hierarchy among fans (who went? Who went several times? Who "got it" and understands the appeal and attraction, because most people didn't?) where emotional attachment is rewarded, and since there is an in-group feeling of being surrounded by naysayers and haters who don't get it, attempts to challenge the validity of that sense can be taken as a sign of betrayal or infiltration, so any attempt to pump the brakes on that spiral are de facto seen as illegitimate. So it keeps going and then for a variety of social and internal factors that makes very little sense to anyone else you're crying at a VR reconstruction of a hotel. I don't think they're faking it or anything, but I also don't think that a person who goes on a cruise and cries over its closure would do so without a community in this kind of feedback loop, unless they got engaged there or something, right? It's not, like, good, and I kind of feel really bad for them, but I hope this was fun! Having really strong feelings and inscrutable drama is very fun, and regardless of why they had them, I hope it was satisfying.
This is great comment and I totally agree! I don’t think, in isolation, it’s bad that people had this strong a reaction to an experience/piece of media. That happens all the time and it’s why fandoms exists. I think what is more troubling is how they’re having this response to a throughly corporate product that took advantage of them in so many ways, and they’re unwilling or unable to acknowledge the ways they were taken advantage of, or figure out how to move on. Like Jenny said, the glazing is kind of uncomfortable (Disney doesn’t deserve it!), and there are other outlets into which they could channel these feelings (like LARP or d&d). Anyway, just some additional things this comment made me think of!
I would have loved for Jenny to go to this as a special guest in full Darth Maul makeup, leaning in!
Another excellent ramble, especially the remarks on spirituality and performative fandom. If a paid experience has that much of an impact on you, or if a VR walkthough makes you cry that easily, you may just be very shallow emotionally. That's not morally wrong. But it is not very mature either. And if people counter this along the line of: 'So you'd rather have me die?' Or words to that effect, that's emotional blackmail and that IS reprehensible. On a side note, I think this is more of an American thing than a European one. Don't know why that is
America culturally (speaking as an American) tends towards isolationism and individualism which can toxically feed this kind of attitude, I think.
I just commented on the evermore vid where you showed her but I wanted to say the ouannii doll your friend made is so perfect!! She looks so well made and detailed, and that’s such a sweet gift!
Not sure if I should put this on the master post, but someone uploaded every issue of "Neopets Magazine" from '06-07! https://archive.gamehistory.org/folder/d1e64116-583a-4d88-9ddd-7fcec7d24a39
Dear Jenny, you are the best youtuber.
9:40 Werewolf and Secret Hitler, while similar, aren’t actually the same game. But there is a version of Secret Hitler called Secret Sith instead, i’m pretty sure the gameplay is the same though.
I always forget how extreeme and toxically positive the Disney fandom is. Becoming personna non grata for and honest review is crazyyy
Love the snail tape roll! Not sure if it appeared in earlier videos, but this is my first time noticing it. Amazing. A+ Perfect design. Changed my life. Would attend Snailtapecon if the snail tape roll ever got shut down by Disney.
The performative grief is giving "The Woman Who Wasn't There" but from the opposite direction. She was desperate for community so she pretended to be connected to this massively tragic event. They're pretending that this event they were connected to was massively tragic. Less morally abhorant but still cringe.
Omg I’ve seen that! Now THAT is a good documentary. So messed up
I have so many thoughts on this and they’re all trickling out at different times but I think its infinitely funny that the con hosts a panel dedicated to workshopping Your Star Wars Star Cruise Adventure Character™️ when Jenny had already gone to prove how pointless it was to do that while doing the actual thing.
I'm trying to focus on the words, but I only have eyes for Ouannii. My envy knows no bounds for this plush. Or the action figure. Or any Ouannii merch at all. 🥹 Great video! It actually sounds like mostly a fun con (ignoring some of the grieving-related panels). I'm surprised they don't have more of a LARP focus there, honestly, it seems like a no brainer if you've got 500 people all so heavily into it. But maybe they do light roleplay while they wander around the con. Really looking forward to the Once Upon a Time video! Thank you for your sacrifice. 🫡
"Interview with the Chef" as portrayed by Riker? iykyk I'd guess the LGBTQ+ panel is about shipping? Maybe the characters, or maybe people's OCs. Perhaps a same-sex couple did the Halcyon together and the captain was happy for them, which would be nice. I hope everyone who was moved to tears by their starcruiser experience dives into LARP and finds their space fursona.
Maybe they read "Starcruiser" as "star cruiser," and thought it was about the leader of the FIrst Order or something?
Secret Hitler and Werewolf are two entirely different games, they are just both social deception games (I'm sure someone else has said this but the ADHD is too high today to go check so sorry if so!) x
It seems like this community has really hyped itself up to the extent that what they're celebrating isn't so much the GS itself as it is the community/fandom they've created around preserving the memory of it. As some others have said, surely there's enough passion and interest here that they could just start up their own roleplay weekends...
49minutes in THANK YOU - ive thought the same general thing but you phrased it so well. for many hobbies it seems there are a certain type of people who can't just say "i like this" or "i dont like this" - it somehow must be universalized into a Thing or a Reason and i suspect you nailed the reason - if someone just expresses it as a feeling, they open themselves up to critique or looking foolish but make it a bigger Thing, and no longer can you be called a loser, because whatever it is is an Investment, or This or That, etc etc, they're able to shield their fragile egos from any possible damage its embarrassing
Honestly the lack of effort to just bring it back in some sort of fan form, really shows a lack of imagination. You can just RP some old extinct rides if you are whimsical enough. Hell!, I sat a friend down with the lights low and played the Shrek 3D DVD playing in front of him on a large screen, with the volume and bass up. Little did he know, I was equipped with a squirt bottle, compressed air, had rehearsed when and which direction to shake his chair at choice moments, and when going over the waterfall at the end, I pressed the office chair lever so he fell a good foot. If I can put that much effort to bring back Shrek 3D to punk a friend, these guys can RP a story for a weekend if it means THAT much to them.
I loved this one! I always feel kinda sad that like every time Jenny has a non-glowing thesis about one of these attractions a huge part of that fandom turns on her. It feels very unfair to me. I'm super hyped about Once Upon A Time! I recall walking in on my mom binging that show every once in a while several years ago and being aghast at the developments I'd stumble on. I look forward to having all the weird tableau I saw untangled for me.
I’m so excited for Jenny’s video too but if you need something to hold you over while you wait you should check out Ashley Norton’s video on Once Upon a Time, it’s pretty funny. But also I’m so hype to see Jenny’s take on it!
season 6 of ouat is absolutely trenches you are so right, me and my friend have been rewatching it for nostalgia reasons and we're hard core struggling to get through season 6
The only problem with your surprise ET LARP scenario is that you are on record as not being into camping.
Eh, I don’t think a cabin really qualifies as camping.
Jenny's impact on Halcylore appears stronger than I would have thought. If the next con has a hay-baling activity we'll know for sure
The waitress/captive audience metaphor is bang on.
Totally. It perfectly explains why the intense emotion over Starcruiser makes me uncomfortable, more so than similar emotions in other fandoms. Starcruiser was something where paid employees had to play along. I think it’s very, very weird to get emotionally attached to that.
okay i know this was also my suggestion for evermore but i would definitely participate in crowdfunding a prosthetic face for jenny to infiltrate halcy-con. I feel like handing out ribbons literally about You Specifically™️ in their space is a grievance that is appropriate to be retaliated with prosthetic face infiltration. It could even be a prosthetic alien face.
the Ouannii doll is so cute 👽
This is the sort of performative devotion that also causes people to speak in tongues or throw themselves on the ground when a crooked megachurch pastor does a kamehameha in their general direction. And see it in service of the most cynically misfired corporate paint by numbers star wars product yet made is just so bizarre. It all comes back to “just because you love something unconditionally doesn’t mean you love it more. It just means you love it sadder”
If I may speak as the Devil's character witness, crooked megachurch pastors have intense charisma, and the people seeing them live probably aren't faking for clout. I saw Benny Hinn live at a fairly small community church, just to see what all the hype was about. I'd never been there before and I never went back, but when he spoke, he was mesmerizing, and as he blessed the congregation, when he looked and gestured -- literally, in my general direction -- I *felt* the blessing hit! I'm not evangelical, and I have no explanation, but whatever he did, it worked, and I'm sure the knock-you-down blessings do, too, if only by the power of suggestion. Maybe we should think of them as stage hypnotists instead of pastors, but however fake it looks on video, it feels real when you're there.
One thing I've noticed about people in fandom especially new fandom members is it does seem as though critique of someone's favorite fandom is met with immediate shut down. You are not allowed to critique the thing or you have to only critique it in the "correct" way. Maybe it's the literacy crisis and the media literacy crisis combined but I do find even when your opinion is not in any way a critique just an opinion people can take it as you just don't get it, you're just a hater. I'm willing to believe spending $3-6k on the low end for a hotel is a life changing experience because the cost alone is wild and like two months of rent for people. You almost have to have a life changing experience otherwise what did you just do? I remember going to HP world before everything was like out about JKR and like the shopping was fun and the atmosphere was fun but it was very warm (like August I think) and after like 2 hours it's like... now what? We've spent all the money and done the things we wanted so... I guess we did it? I wouldn't call it life changing but it also wasn't like... $3k. Maybe that's the difference?
Starcruiser fans are not beating the cult allegations lol
ngl, Jenny's "Spirituality" headline made me go wide-eyed for a hot minute. I'm glad it was meditation or w/e and not some 2 hour RP "panel" of Lieutenant Croy preforming an in-universe mass wedding on the 500 assembled Starcruiser fans.
"How many people think you're part of a Cult know?"... Half the room raised their hands. Yeah, I think the sunk-cost fallacy broke some of this people...and not in a financial way.
I share the link with my wife so we can watch it on the tv, but never publicly or anything like that. Sorry about the leaks :(
Wow the star cruiser fandom is becoming even more cringe than the normal Star Wars fandom
We need to raise money for this ̶ ̷o̷r̷c̷h̷a̷r̷d̷ hotel documentary to stop the c̷h̷i̷l̷d̷r̷e̷n̷ ̷f̷r̷o̷m̷ ̷k̷i̷l̷l̷i̷n̷g̷ ̷t̷h̷e̷m̷s̷e̷l̷v̷e̷s̷ youtuber from being right!
I am beyond excited to announce the launch of our kickstarter ᶦⁿ ᵃᵈᵈᶦᵗᶦᵒⁿ ᵗᵒ ᵒᵘʳ ˢᵘᵖᵖᵒʳᵗ ᵍʳᵒᵘᵖˢ
So excited for the OUaT video! Knowing your aversion to long-running TV shows, I didn't expect you'd binge the whole thing so soon. I thought S5 was the worst but generally everything after the first half of 3 was terrible.
I think that woman who was speaking was Captain Keevan.
Watching two people in full Star Wars cosplay standing by a FL hotel pool singing an unmiked acapella rendition of a theme song from a defunct luxury larp hotel and desperately trying to crawl into my couch from second hand embarrassment.
Guys please don't share the YouTube mirrors. Do you understand how much joy it brought me to watch Jenny tier rank fish on my giant TV next to the view of the city skyline out my living room window. This is the magic of life.
I hope people cut it out because I LOVE my Jenny Ramble videos on YouTube. 😭
The YouTube link sharers aren’t Jenny’s fans so all of the comments appealing to them to stop out of loyalty to Jenny and her actual fans are pointless. 99% of her subscribers are here because we like Jenny and we like Jenny’s videos. 1% of her subscribers are criminals who pay $2 to steal from Jenny to increase traffic to their pages. There’s no reason for them to stop. Jenny has every reason to stop them by eliminating a redundant link to a platform that has nothing to do with Patreon. Whenever she floats the idea of fighting back against criminals who are stealing her videos there’s always a backlash about how difficult it is to watch the rambles on Patreon. That’s not true anymore. It’s easy to watch Patreon on almost any television. Getting rid of the YouTube mirrors would take nothing away from virtually all of the legitimate Jenny fans and would take everything away from the criminals. Stop guilt tripping Jenny about how she would be victimizing you by shutting down the thieves. In related news Jenny should’ve put the Ouannii plushie behind a pole. How do you like it, Ouannii? Obstructed views aren’t fun are they, Ouannii?
Honestly fair point about the kinds of people who share the links, I hadn't thought of that
I think a big part of why it feels so performative for me is that so many of those panels and events are spent mourning and reminiscing instead of just... doing the thing they all clearly love. Let's TALK about what our characters were like. Let's give advice on how to prepare for something that isn't around anymore. Let's TALK about how this specific thing that was around for 2 years impacted us. Guys... you have the convention center. You have people that can clearly perform. You have incredibly talented people recreating props. And clearly, you all have an idea of what kind of character you want to play. Why on Earth aren't you just... using this con as a roleplay weekend, re-uniting all of the people that liked the concept of the hotel while simultaneously carrying on its spirit? So much of this con feels like coming together to be victims, when I feel like the energy really should be going in the exact opposite direction. Don't cry and hang your head over a VR recreation, deck out the convention center and just HAVE a Halcyon roleplay weekend...
FULLY agree, plus now I'm imagining how fun it would be to make the Earth Hotel part of your LARP. Like, this Marriot is a new destination within the Star Wars universe and we're all Star Wars characters experiencing it as a strange new environment amid our greater LARP storyline.
Crazy how many Americans are afraid and anxious all the time of rejection until we can pay a premium to ensure fake authority figures respect us
I feel like a lot of Americans grow up in suburban spaces that are physically designed to discourage community building, especially diverse community building, so it leads to mentalities like this where people are really starved for those kinds of connections but also deeply afraid of them outside of their safety bubble.
It's lame that people are sharing the mirrors, but Patreon should be extremely embarrassed that so many of us probably shuddered at the thought of having to view content on their native player. Why does Patreon forget where I was in a 2+ hour video if I leave my laptop to make dinner? Why does Jenny have to bother giving us an index of all the Rambles, when the site itself should neatly organize her past content into a ✨ numbered list ✨? For shame you sharers of the mirrors! For shame Patreon web player! Jenny deserves better. 😤
If these people genuinely want a religious experience so badly, they should just go find a real one. Find a good church where you can put this energy toward a food bank and a shelter for the unhoused, and you can put your creative efforts into making fun decorations and planning activities for the free summer day camps for kids from low income families who can’t afford childcare. And then you can have religious experiences at the services. The nice thing about church (the good ones, not the crazy trump ones) is that it has a bunch of systems set up to get people to put their efforts into helping those in need. New “religious” experiences like this star cruiser fandom do not do any of that, so all their efforts are totally selfish and turned inwards at helping their own group, and it’s not part of their moral code to do anything but worship capitalist corporations, so they have no reason to ever do anything that would actually make the world a better place
So excited for the Once Upon A Time video, Jenny your horribleness
it's wild how threatened by the existence of your video some of these people seem to be, as if a differing opinion with valid critiques will somehow rob them of their positive memories.
Losing my mind at the guy in the audience wearing a NastyPig hat at 36:02. Did this Jenny video GO THERE??? It DID!!!
You just unearthed a mostly-forgotten childhood memory. At my elementary school, the rule was the person waiting had to sing the alphabet twice and then it was their turn on the swing. Kids would practice so they could sing it insanely fast. It was very stressful.
The case against IP-based theme park attractions is strong until you’re reminded that Jenny has never seen the film E.T.
She actually did finally watch it last year! https://x.com/jennyenicholson/status/1938130955803435110?s=46&t=F87NDEwI6b-ZPYCyymTh6w
I love the mirrors because I can use it on my Chromecast which I can’t do with Patreon. I don’t even share the link with my group chat of 3 other people, cmon guys 😭
Always happy to get more Starcruiser content!
Legit gasped at the favourite ribbon reveal, like what level of corporate loyalty are you at when you compare a video criticising an expensive holiday to a mass shooting??
Also omg i felt bad because i downloaded some videos on YouTube to watch offline by myself because i was worried if i stopped subscribing here it “would be stealing” no way ppl are sharing these with ppl
Thank you diva!
Don’t share the mirrors, people! Encourage supporting Jenny instead! I support the TV watchers! (even though I feel kinda guilty now, what do you mean the rest of you aren’t listening intently while you do chores, do you know how far into the fish ramble I was before I realized, hey, this is weird, you’re just listening to someone praise fish, this is one you maybe need the visuals for)
Hi Jenny, I'm late but wanted to say: in response to your Patreon post from a few months, I am 100% sure that everyone who said they were "disappointed" by the Incubus video being only 1hr 40mins long, was completely joking. That's plenty! We all want you to be able to work on what you want to work on. You shouldn't feel like every single thing has to be at the scale of the Starcruiser video. Also, the Incubus video is one of my all-time favorites of yours!
You already covered a lot of my thoughts in the video, but there's something so bleak about making a whole convention to mourn the hotel, regardless of where the line is between performative and authentic. A lot of fandoms get accused of an inability to move on from whatever it is they're a fan of, but in the case of the GS specifically, I just can't view them in any other light. The idea of devoting so much time and effort to reliving a pretty anemic (by most accounts) two-day vacation is crazy to me when there are so many other experiences out there that I'll never have time to take part in.
It wouldn't even be that bad if they put their energy toward making their own Halcyon roleplay weekend, instead of getting together to talk about how cool that one thing was that one time. We're human beings, we have agency and free will; if the loss of the GS was so great, then what's stopping you from starting up your own? With blackjack and hookers and all that
So excited for the OUAT vid!!! It’s always fun to relive the era of my life I was obsessed with that show 😂🫶🏻
Okay, so what needs to happen is we need someone to set Jenny up with a team of expert makeup artists so she can infiltrate these kind of spaces/screenings in disguise.
I'm sorta hoping she goes with a mask and a hat.
The ET dinner party LARP concept sounds really practical, I do not know why Nicholson would call it high concept. That seems eminently do-able and easy to pull of. I would love to see Nicholson review non battle game LARPs. Here in Melbourne other than Swordcraft (not a LARP, it is a battle game and having watched it for over a decade it just gets weirder) we have the Hobbits Hoedown (players pick one of four hobbit families, then in the lead up there are costume making, improv and dance workshops-the game itself is baking competitions, showing off crafts, dancing and just lots of picnicking in costume although I have not been I like the concept and support for players) Midnight In Melbourne (players turn up at a bar in their vampire best and are "cast" by the GMs into a clan, given little cute easy to reference guides so they don't have to memorise everything before turning up, bar staff are given "rumour cards" to encourage players to buy drinks-keeping the venue happy-while not expecting anyone working there to have to know anything plus i think they marked true or false on the pieces of paper in invisible ink so players could also check with a player who got cast as a rumour monger if gossiping wasn't enough of a reason to talk to other players, new players can choose to put a red rose of New Blood on their lapel/hair/etc so other players know to make extra effort to include them, details like branded badges with a blank spot can be used not just for pronouns but being blank means players who are hard of hearing can sharpie that on there, they write and print fake newspapers with details relevant to each game-so many details tickle me) And probably a bunch more but consideration of player experience and deifying the game itself can be an issue in my experience of LARP. Also not considering the conditions of NPCs and crew who are working with the attitude that it is gauche or incorrect or embarrassing or something to even discuss the details of those roles can be frustrating. I saw that mirrored a lot in the Star Cruiser/Evermore discussions where people trying to debunk Nicholson refused to even acknowledge the existence of the sections critiquing worker conditions. Just flatly ignoring or downplaying or dismissing working conditions (and NPCing can be work). Even just looking at some of weirdness and silliness of different games (Drachenfest in Germany is the biggest LARP in the world, it is a battle game, and allegedly on the last day all the kids there who want to are put in the middle of the battle field and they can one hit kill every adult on the field-having seen kids go completely feral with power at LARPs and knowing adults love hamming it up plus how incredibly hard with details the armour, costumes, SXF make up players at Drachenfest go after seeing videos of the orc warbands) I think it would so funny to watch Nicholson react if details of non battle games are hard to track down.
I have no special attachment to Starcruiser - the only reason I even know about it is the original video - but the part about how the people getting emotional must have been performative feels a little myopic and honestly a little bit uncharacteristically mean. A lot of these people went on what they think of as the "vacation of a lifetime". They spent a ton of money on a singular experience, even if it was relatively short. And while obviously some people had a pretty bad experience - and that risk is totally unacceptable for something at this price - it also seems obvious that some people did have an experience that they felt was pretty magical. Even if they were strictly in the minority, it is not that surprising that some of them would be pretty emotional about it. People feel grief about finishing books! The idea that someone might feel some grief about a once-in-a-lifetime vacation is not at all unthinkable. Tons of people have extremely strong nostalgia about really special vacations that they only went on once.
I disagree. I think she absolutely nailed the psychology behind these peoples over involvement in a 2 day corporate profit making venture.
Man Jenny's Duel of the Fates was amazing 😭
For some reason I’m picturing Jenny going to, like, the Willa Cather museum in Red Cloud, Nebraska and making a critical video about it and becoming persona non grata at all future Willa Cather cons.
Marked safe from spending $2 a minute for the pleasure of scanning crates in the rain ⛳️
I totally thought you said "baleen accident" the first time which was very confusing but I'm not here to judge. Baling makes much more sense though.
I thought the same thing too!! Like no girl get out of the whale’s mouth!
Delightfully devilish, your maliciousness!
the conclusion i've come to after finishing this video: the starcruiser fandom is qanon and jenny is their hillary clinton
I was never able to Pokémon GO to the Starcruiser 😩
Damn, the queer stuff is so sad! There's so much art made by and for queer folks, and they grab onto tiiiny slivers of "representation" from Disney!? You could easily make a Star Wars larp where everyone are gay gender queer aliens with drag queen singers and leather gays as the fascist bad guys (I don't know star wars lore, sorry haha)
Drag queen Star Wars would rip omg
In defense of people having strong emotional reactions in seemingly weird scenarios: she could have done Starcruiser with someone who has since passed away. I know I’m really sad every time I think about the World Cup in my hometown of Vancouver because my dad would have loved to see it. It’s been a few years, so I’m not crying about it, but I also don’t think it would be that strange or performative (especially if I were actually physically present in Van). Sometimes crying is the healthy reaction even if a convention wouldn’t be my personal choice. (But also I didn’t see the video Jenny is talking about. So I don’t know.)
The video is being shown as Jenny is talking about it
Y’all PLEASEEE don’t ruin the YouTube mirrors, patreon’s inbuilt video player is buns 😭
It’s always interesting to me how angry some fans get about your reviews. They’re always pretty even handed. Great video as always.
I think the woman talking at 35:10 might be a Captain Keevan actor, maybe even the one from Jenny's visit? I may have a bit of face blindness, and its espeically hard when the person is wearing blue makeup.
I saw halcyon daze at a film festival in Indianapolis!
They should use “the void” technology to recreate the Gsc. lol
Conveniently, the Void's blank office cubicles can be rearranged to prevent blocking anyone's virtual view of Wen Weaver being burned at the stake
“we like messed up pressing the elevator buttons” you really do slap everything
I love watching on yt I put these up on the big tv when I clean
I'm both so disgusted at that guy's "favourite ribbon" and all the awfulness people have thrown around, and sad that people have so little community a billion dollar company's roleplaying hotel "healed" them. What they actually needed was social interaction with peers, and look how much they feel it changed their life!
☝️☝️☝️exactlyyyyyy
The canon gay character was obviously the ship's founder, Shug Drabor. We know this because he died before the hotel ever opened
the lore detail that he was short and needed tiny doors was actually a homophobic microaggression because it was trying to imply he was not masculine, thus showing disney's dedication to realistic representation of marginalization
That ET idea sounds amazing
New supporter here, Anyone know if there just a regular patrion video of the comments and updates of the star wars hotel? I like to make playlist of Jenny's videos on here and I can't with YouTube links.
it's probably not that deep but "marked safe from-" also initially comes from mass violence events. i know people use it jokingly for a lot of different things but it's just interesting the parallels jenny mentions support groups and the starcruiser fandom.
I mean there was a mass loss at StarCruiser in terms of cash so
$150 buys a Halcyon survivor access to an immersive group therapy session and delusion extension for 12 more months
The way some people treat experiencing the Star Cruiser like surviving the Titanic
jenny's gay moment was her giftshop tour and we all know it
AHAHAHA
As someone with a loved one battling addiction my jaw dropped at “halc-anon” are you kidding me…
Genuinely, I hope some of these people realize they are using a dead Disney attraction as an emotional crutch and seek professional help instead of lashing out at Jenny for having a difference of opinion.
joeee daaa fiiiiishhh
I didn't even know you *could* share the mirrors. It never occured to me to try since they're unlisted
I GET pining after an experience that no longer exists but this is putting way too much effort than what the actual experience gave it’s customers to deserve. Especially if they constantly want to snark on Jenny’s concerns and criticisms.
Right? I love Disneyland, and I’m old so I’ve seen numerous amazing rides change or be removed and I miss them a LOT, but I still have zero interest in going to a con designed to cry about them.
S6 is pretty bad but isn't it the one with the musical episode?? I'm a sucker for a musical episode. S7 is...well Regina is in it at least. Also Sage (your Sammy) does still work for Disney - he devised and performs in one of the shows in I think Hollywood studios. He is also a vlogger for all ears which is probably the best Disney vlog channel. He's a very talented guy!
Was looking to see if someone had already said this!
I watch on the Patreon app normally, so the mirrors being taken down would just be a nuance really. But if one of you dumb dumbs that shares the mirrors with others, that made me sad so please stop
Why does this feel like a convention full people larping the emotion of enjoying/having enjoyed the StarCruiser, built solely out of spite for Jenny’s video in order to prove that she was wrong?
Because I think that’s exactly what it is
The hate for the starcruiser video is so weird to me. God forbid someone talk about their subpar experience at an attraction that doesn’t even exist anymore Looking forward to the OUAT video!
They identify with it so strongly that they feel that any criticism at all will is invalidating them as people
omg the ET cabin trip furby larp idea PLEASE i need this
I feel bad but I honestly couldn’t help but stifle a laugh during the part with the VR atrium and the lady holding herself in tears. This whole thing made me realize why people got so upset and defensive over your video. I had no idea they were this obsessed with it.
Like I get some people get emotional at seeing the castle or whatever but it just feels so… awkward? Wrong? I know I myself even participated in this crying over Disney thing last year, it was the first time going since 2019, and then my grandpa who loved the Tiki Room was still with us, but he passed a few years ago. upon going in and seeing the show irl again I broke down. But that’s not bc it was the Tiki Room, it was bc it reminded me of my late grandpa and one of his favorite things to do on our trips to Disney.
The jenny-provided battle music literally made my entire week.
hating a youtuber for being critical of something you enjoy to this degree is so strange to me….like i cant imagine someone who doesnt enjoy my fave fandoms taking up so much of my mental real estate, seems exhausting
Gaya is a queer ICON!
People’s uncritical defense of their fandoms as perfect is really odd to me. I mean, I grew up with Star Trek and I had no problem dropping Paramount+ in light of all of the… everything. This idea that have champion your interests as perfect against all attacks is how you get people defending like JK Rowling…
It’s because they identify TOO much with the fandom, so any criticism becomes a personal attack on them.
Also everyone should check out The Kyberpunks. They’re awesome! http://thekyberpunks.com/
On the topic of low barrier to entry LARPs-- literally any murder mystery dinner!! Though I do think a Star Wars themed one would be very fun, maybe even one that takes place on the ship.
I just went to a 90s themed one and I got picked to play Scully. It was so fun!
people hate you over the dumbest stuff jc
absolutely wild for people to say the star cruiser is different from normal larping because it doesn't have the issue of socially rejecting people when one of the arguments for why jenny's experience at star cruiser was bad is that the employees were socially rejecting her 😭
Right? And also wild how someone tried to say the actors rejected her because she was filming… And now there’s a woman making a whole ass documentary about the Star Cruiser comprised of tons of footage of her interacting with the actors…
I'm gonna be so vexed if we lose the mirrors because people can't act right. (Obviously not at Jenny) Don't be weird yall!
Patreon video can't be trusted. Stopping youtube mirrors isn't an option.
Dude, the Patreon video player sucks ass. Do NOT ruin YouTube for us, you chodes. That said, thank you as always for another wonderful ramble Jenny <3
personally, i get why some people had intense emotional reactions to the starcruiser... i remember when i went, captain keevan noticed my self harm scars, hugged me close, and whispered in my ear "you're beautiful, please stop!"
The idea of Spieling Captain Keevan just takes me out. Although given how dedicated some of the fans of the star wars hotel are, it would make sense if it reached that point of identifying the different Keevans like stalkery Peter Pan tumblr girls
It's ironic that the convention about the Starcruiser offered a better hotel experience than the Starcruiser itself.
Probably cheaper, too
There’s something existentially horrifying and hilarious about a kid deciding that their toys need to have a jail, and that jail is a microwave oven.
They had a Vampire the Masquerade LARP in a goth coffee shop that used to be an old timey bank, so it had a vault (the place was called The Vault). I couldn't join since I wasn't 18 but there were a bunch of people doing it, I think the LARP folded when the business closed. The owner opened a 2nd place but it was short lived and not as cool and not condusive to vampire roleplay. Anyway they just need a place that can pass as a space cruise ship, like a legally distinct Star Warsy cantina
heads up gen con attendees (i know you're here): The Halcyon Daze movie is going to screen at gen con!
oh to be a working actor in socal hired by jenny nicholson to be a government agent for her personal et larp
Are you going to ask for donations from people who can't go to your ET larp weekend to help make it better for the people who do? I want to help fund a VR version of the ET ride
An entire documentary film being made in spite of you individually…is so iconic
"This convention is a safe space from that one YouTube video we don't like" is an insane sentiment to make swag about
Right? I feel like Starcruiser and Evermore fans are much more defensive because it's harder to acknowledge the huge money sink and how the brand treats them poorly (budget cuts, poor planning, at the expense of customer experience)... Much easier to pin all the blame on the person who dares to point attention to these structural issues that consumers have little power to fix
A performative, revisionist mainly online group that’s attempting to rewrite their experiences as ones that were rapturous, life changing, and spiritual for clout within their subset of fans. I feel like this describes a lot of fandoms, be it for pop stars, Star Wars, or meme stocks. Something with these online fandoms can gain pseudo religious meanings from marketing. Annoyingly this group found their Judas with Jenny.
I never thought about the comparison with meme stocks, it's very apt! At a certain point the group's objective shifts from defending the IP/investment toward strengthening the bonds of the ingroup (by identifying and hating on outgroup members, of course)
I found your channel through the NYT (NYT?) article on the four-hour video and have been following you ever since. It hadn’t occurred to me that you would acquire haters because of it. ::sigh::
You deserve to have a panel at this Con.
The entirety of the panel is Jenny dressed up as Jabba, laughing at and mocking the audience
It seems like these people who got really into the Galactic Starcruiser need to try going to a ren faire or something or one of the Star Wars themed events that happen and not just tie themselves to that one specific thing...it's weird. And that's coming from someone who will be going to Anthrocon in a couple days.
I wonder if there is a certain comfort to be had specifically because it was very exlusive and is now over. Like, you can learn EVERYTHING there is to know about the Halcyon. They are not making any more of it. You can play your Character withing very thight boundaries, and for people who havent larped or played a ttrpg before, that can really ease them into it. Its exclusive enough that you feel special for going, but enough people went that you can have a little comunity.
Hey guys, let's be team players and not pass around the Youtube mirrors. If I can't watch Jenny on my smart fridge then I have nothing
IM HOWLING HELPPP 🤣
I would love being tricked into a high concept ET experience. For some reason that reminded me of when I started writing a friend letters but I quickly starting weaving a fantasy story about creatures in my yard. I guess imagined it would get deeper and more crazy as time went along. I could still do this. I just need to pick a friend who would respond in kind. 🤔
I can’t believe I was Rick Rolled in such a convoluted way
Kind of refreshing, honestly.
When you pay over 6000 dollars to spend the weekend larping as Jellicle Snug Snax, the half Ewok, half human Jedi, and it changes your life so much you need to make a puff peice documentary about it so a YouTuber doesn't get the last word. Gotta admit, that is one hell of a power move.
"Don't ask" girl why you making a whole ass film then 😭
"But does anything matter?" about setting an arbitrary goal and then feeling beholden to it is a HUGE mood. Some things matter as much as anything does and no more ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Dont ruin the youtube mirrors!!! I literally cannot play the patreon videos on my phone bc it becomes a playback loop and is unlistenable and unwatchable! (Obv i understand this is a big issue and agree in its removal if it continues to be one)
omg this video is saving my day thank you
It is always a treat to see Skippy featured in a video in any capacity 🫡
In the video where that girl in the VR headset was crying there was a dog in the background with a purple and blue tail. It was alien dog cosplay!
Hey Jenny! I was part of the 10 person team that put on year one and year two of Halcy-Con. Would love to answer any questions that you (or anyone else here) might have! Loved the original video and this one as well!
omg hope she sees this comment! you should try and reach out on twitter or thru patreon dms
Somehow, Galactic Starcruiser returned. 🤣
Worshipping a hotel/IP… Lord please guide them to a church 😭
I was thinking the exact same thing, these people genuinely want a religious experience so they should just go find a real one. Find a good church where you can put this energy toward a food bank and a shelter for the unhoused, and you can put your creative efforts into making fun decorations and activities for the free summer day camps for kids from low income families who can’t afford childcare. And then you can have religious experiences at the services. The nice thing about church (the good ones, not the crazy trump ones) is that it has a bunch of systems set up to get people to put their efforts into helping those in need. New “religious” experiences like this star cruiser fandom do not do any of that, so all their efforts are totally selfish and turned inwards at helping their own group, and it’s not part of their moral code to do anything else so they’ll never change
but honestly i didn't even need to be told that nobody on the starcruiser was gay. disney star wars has only 2 rules: 1) everybody is related to each other in some way, and 2) you will NOT be gay
"I'm (not) gay AND your brother"
if i'm giving the benefit of the doubt, the "they went there" might be a response to the annoying internet losers that would cry that the convention was "woke" for having an LGBT-related panel...but in a whole event dedicated to glazing disney, that just reminds me of the fact that disney is constantly caving to the demands of those same annoying internet losers :/
The Kickstarter video for that documentary is indistinguishable from the corny Disney "podcasts" featured in the main channel Star Cruiser video. Just heaping praise on the project with silly sounding marketing language.
"Not to reveal the depth of my Starcruiser research" says the woman who did a 4 hour video about it.
Just as my insomnia breaks i awaken from a hearty nap to this notification What a feeling
oof season six was a rough watch, I ended up skipping every scene regina wasn’t in. I only cared about her lol
Jenny going down a fun slide just after starting the parenthesises.
the whole con is a little detached from reality in a way that makes me want to grab the attendees by the shoulders and shout "you deserve better! you can larp elsewhere! you dont owe them anything!"
Me when I see people that play D&D, complain about the system’s big issues, and refuse to try other game systems that fix the issues they talk about
I think Werewolf predates Secret Hitler by quite a long time. And Werewolf itself is basically just rethemed Mafia.
Oh thank God, someone else making this correction. It had more or less the reverse of Jenny's hypothesized trajectory, Secret Hitler was retheming to spice up the dated, uncontroversial theming of Werewolf. Most Millennial boardgaming nerds not having had formative experiences with Lon Chaney Jr.
They’re fundraising for a documentary?! As if a 4 hour one doesn’t already exist…
never realized until today my dream in life is actually for one of my friends to take me to a cabin in the woods where i'm bamboozled into roleplaying E.T.
I thought she was going to sic the Inbred Cannibal Redneck Zombies on them
I use the YouTube mirrors so I download them to watch on flights. Other than that I have no reason to have them. Sorry people have been sharing bro
The Good Neighbor Game is created by the guy who played Sammy on Jenny’s Starcruiser voyage. I bet he’s the “enigmatic host.”
once upon a time is one of my favorite shows, i unironically loved it as a teenager and now as an adult it’s one of my comfort so-bad-it’s-good watches. i remember season 7 being much worse than season 6 just because of how confusing it was, but it’s possible i also was just butthurt that none of the actors who stuck around were playing the same roles for some reason.
The only time I have ever wished I had a VR headset.
Yes he works at the company (your Sammie). He is hook in the villians show in Hollywood studios. He also is in a band that plays a ton at springs. He ALSO is a major contributor of hawk immersive or whatever it’s called (did I catch that they had a panel there?) seems like he’s very involved, along with being a blogger AND working for Disney in an equity capacity
How is that dude playing Hook? Unless it’s silent in the fur costume. Hook is an aging twink, not a young one. Also his vlogs are very hard to watch, he’s just a shill for Disney
came at the perfect time!! our ac just went out so this will be a good distraction from the Hell that is summer
i know it's only tangential to the video but secret hitler is actually a pretty recent instance of a social deduction game! it's from 2016, whereas mafia (the original version of werewolf) dates back to the late 1980s and werewolf itself is from the 90s also yes once upon a time season 6 is the worst one
my show is on...
Secret Hitler and Werewolf are not the same game, but hey have similar mechanics!
oh no... I feel so bad but the singing with no backing is hurting my heart 😬😭
Evermore flashbacks
Is it bad to put the mirrors in my watch later?
watch later is 100% private and i dont believe has ever been public. you can also "like" the video and likes are, again, 100% private on youtube! theres no way to make them public afaik. ultimately its jennys decision, but hopefully this is an ok solution ^_^
People are actually sharing the mirrors? That’s just plain disrespectful and duplicitous. Please, let’s just respect the rules and boundaries that Jenny has set.
Oh I'm so excited
But I don’t have a VR headset 🥺
Stop sharing the links people, I don’t want to have to watch these on the Patreon app. If you share the mirror, I will hunt you down and say mean things about you.
Please respect Jennys work, and don't share the patreon vids
S6 of OUAT was the longest season of television on the planet.
Honestly if ppl don’t respect the mirrors I’m gunna LOSE IT. I have to see Jenny huge on my TV otherwise it’s just not the same
Someone get this women shapeshifting powers, STAT!
Then I could go to Crooked Lantern Tavern too
Please don’t share the mirrors guys. It’s not fair to Jenny and it isn’t fair to the rest of us if you make them unworkable. Don’t be a d*ck and all
Sad to hear people are still sharing the links but if you gotta go exclusively patreon, do it!
Werewolf is much older than Secret Hitler. Werewolf is a variant on Mafia and originates in the mid-80s, secret Hitler was made in the 2010s.
Thank you! I always feel like I'm crazy when people are talking about Secret Hitler or Werewolf and I go....isn't this just Mafia?
Omg I’ve been missing the theme park things.
I feel validated, I've never been able to make it past or through season 6.
Y’all don’t ruin the YouTube mirrors. I like being able to pull it up on my tv to enjoy while i clean :((((
Same here! I love watching the rambles on a bigger screen and making a bit of an event out of it. I would hate to only be able to watch it on my laptop or phone.
How horribly heinous, her hideously horrendous highness hmmm 🐌
Here's hotness hell. Howdy hayfever..... Hatchoooo!!!
Fan ran...........was there a.........ball pit
They should offer an extra hour in the sarlacc pit.
Usually I watch the whole video before considering commenting but I literally laughed out loud at “this is content for a phone call with your mom”. The most measured and appropriate burn of poor content I’ve ever heard.
Oh, Jenny Nicholson's exchange on twitter with a salty star wars fan about not watching his video on her is one that will live on in novelty books about repartee. She responded to tweet complaining she hadn't responded to a video complaining about her with something along the lines of "I'm not watching your unedited video" and he was like "you do not KNOW it was unedited because you haven't SEEN IT" and she was just like "It's 12 hours long" Which I do not think he responded to. Because no. Although anyone who makes rant videos longer than entire seasons of some TV shows then complains publicly does appear to be someone who hasn't learnt brevity isn't just the soul of wit-it can also be a necessity
A note on OUAT: I believe it's structurally indistinguishable from TVD (VPD), and I'm SO curious if that played into your analysis at all. 👀
here’s how starcruiser can still win (again)
AAAAH so happy youre doing OUAT!! What a cacophonos mess of a tv show. I love it dearly.
Yaaay! After lunch listening while I work
I gotta disagree here, s6 is bad but it's still better than s7
7’s only redeeming quality it that it has the girl from Reign. Who actually matches Lana in looks and talent. I wish she played her time traveling daughter.
OMG! I just created a fan-poster to celebrate the Galactic Starcruiser video! KARMA! https://www.etsy.com/listing/4530495483/galactic-starcruiser-poster-jenny?ref=shop_home_active_1&logging_key=3b5c4e07ba73e686470eb3dcc61bea0d3d156dd4%3A4530495483
Skippy looks so cute in this! :]
Just googled what this is and oh boy
i came as soon as i heard 🐎🐎🐎
Thank u Jenny this will make my chronic illness misery spiral a little less miserable wow ♥️✨
noooo mirrors are so useful for me!! i listen to them in the bg and doing it via yt is easier
Yeees please respect the mirrors!!!!
People, don’t share the mirrors. You can gain access for like $2.
Give your friend a high five for me
At the exact moment this was posted, this topic was actually ahead by 1 on the poll, so it all worked out!
AYEEEE JUST IN TIME 🙏🏽
But will we finally learn the fate of Harkos??
yayy!! been going through a lot this month so a nice treat for once :D
as an experienced ouat watcher season six really does take it out of you 😭
It starts out kinda interesting but almost immediately spirals out so badly
Just in time for my lunch break!!! Thanks for the accidental timing!!
SAME! Have a great shift ✨💃🏼
