how to lose a guy in 10 days needed to be gay so badly
I feel like if I were in the Netflix Propaganda department I would simply not add a scene where a black guy talks about killing Arabs and giving them pronouns. I feel like that made the Marines look like psychos.
27 Dresses easily could've ended with the protagonist becoming a wedding planner, with all her friends giving testimonials in her portfolio. And then maybe she doesn't get married, she can still be in a relationship, just like "nah, not for me, at least not yet." Or like, getting married at city hall.
While listening to the 27 dresses segment, it dawned on me that the movie would be much better as a thriller or a horror movie... Maybe the majority of romcoms would be 😆
All the other romcoms just feel like classic dumb rom com tropes where it’s like I should be mad at the characters but we’re in such a magical cozy land of make believe where if you turn off your brain you don’t really care… but the last army propaganda movie started to make my blood boil it was such a hard launch from cozy problematic old movies to such blatant conservative propaganda. Idk the actual political beliefs of the British guy but how he did both this movie and Red, White, and Royal blue astounds me, like is this a greed, fire your agent, or no thoughts head empty problem? I would want my not suspicious at all secret room of infinite wealth to be like a really elaborate indoor jungle gym that has a rock climbing wall and like a trapeze set, like I can just scale stuff and be whimsical without social anxiety taking over lol a sudden burst of adrenaline and boom I’m climbing all over the place. Of course it being a secret room stumbling upon it ppl would probably think I’m training to hunt down people or something
I can't believe any other person has seen Return to Me, the movie that made me want to become a large animal vet for a few years
hello from 2026 where luke from purple hearts/ the army movie is in "the sheep detectives" and "he-man"!!! :D
he was also in red white and royal blue and a few other gay roles! I think he likes to play gay guys a lot even though as far as I know he's straight
I also have weirdly fond memories of You've Got Mail.
my secret room would probably just be an empty room with one cardboard cutout of me i mean- not me. gerard way. a cardboard cutout of gerard way. not me. i am not gerard way.
i love the hard stance they take on not scamming the military in purple hearts when she literally Might Have Died from healthcare funding being funneled into the military
this is me realizing that chain from 27 dresses wasn't a wedding planner, IDK I guess it just made it up
I do feel like it explains a lot like I didn't question why she went to 27 weddings
makes total sense to rule out dating guys whose entire occupation is "murder people"
based
I was raised on You've Got Mail, it was one of my favorite movies as a kid and still is, and I can't help but agree that it feels as though every person ever forgot that movie existed even though it's peak.
my mom is a youve got mail mega fan she felt like she was the only one too lol! i watched it a lot with her as a kid
I appreciate your existence.
charjabug...
I'm obviously late as hell but I think a no-military dating policy makes sense, even if you aren't near a military base. Me and my sisters wouldn't date people in the military for the same reasons we wouldn't date cops. Support of either isn't consistent with our views of the systems that surround both. It also is def influenced from our father being a veteran. I remember once he told us that if we ever join or associate with the military then he's somehow failed in the crucial role of guiding and advising us as he should.
My dream room is a secret witchy library. Big part of the dream is in fact keeping it a secret behind a bookcase door and disappearing for hours without anybody knowing where I’ve gone until one day my theoretical kids are given a key for their 13th birthday or something to mark their transition into teenagedom.
I remember adoring 27 dresses when i was in grade seven? (I was wee) and for the longest time I thought that she ~was~ a wedding planner and now that you've shone the light, I'm just sitting here like ".. oh."
Im not a wedding enthusiast like the 27 Dresses lady, but my job requires me to be at a lot of them, and I can confirm that brides do give speeches pretty regularly.
the liberal character in purple heart is so bad for my blood pressure lol like girl you could be so much meaner please.....
I have returned to this ramble several times and today what I am deeply enjoying is Jenny's take on 27 Dresses. I enjoyed that movie well enough and don't really share Jenny's perspective on the main character HOWEVER I think Jenny's perspective is a much funnier way to watch the movie. Wedding Vampire indeed. Also I have heard brides give speeches at weddings! Usually just a version of "thank you all for coming", sometimes co-delivered with the groom. At least one speech did feature each member of the wedding party being thanked (briefly) one by one, but aside from maybe calling out specific parents I don't think I've heard one that was like "thanks for coming, thanks to our wedding party for their help, but HUGE shoutout to my bff Jane who did all the work" LOL.
My Harry Potter collection goes in the secret room. Plus probably holiday decorations because why waste the storage space.
Screw you Youtube, and also screw you Patreon, for your crappy interface that makes everyone want Youtube mirrors, which I say with no anger toward Jenny herself, of whom I am a huge fan! >:( Grrrrr, grrrr I say, with a degree of anger that is reasonable for this minor issue!!!
i second your grrr
Jenny, did you know You've Got Mail is originally based on the 1940's The Shop Around The Corner? It's such a heartwarming, romantic and cozy wintertime movie that I highly recommend :)
Ok but what if it was a slide room? Then you could explain "oh it's my princess peach room, please don't go in" and then you're like "oh i get it, like Super Mario 64, Princess peach's secret slide okay"
i hope the youtube mirror gets posted one day i love this ramble
I love that she started with you've got mail, because I don't love many romcoms, but I love you've got mail
Mine is filled with ever conceivable kind of Pokémon merchandise
Clearly, Jenny didn't watch the incest cut of Kate and Leopold, where (really) the guy Meg Ryan is dating in the beginning turns out to be her grandson after she gets together with Hugh Jackman in the past.
This makes me respect it more as a work of art, tbh (I also enjoy that Hugh Jackman’s character is basically being pimped out by his evil uncle at the beginning, I feel like we don’t see enough of those types of plot lines with male main characters)
the concept of a grown man professional basketball player who's probably 7 feet tall playing in his hidden indoor forest room
My secret room would be a giant walk-in aquarium, like one of the tunnels you'd walk through at the Georgia or Virginia Aquariums. But at the same time, that *couldn't* be a secret room, because I'd need to hire at least one other person to help me take care of it. I guess an actual secret room I'd have might be a big Lego city display
So it's January, but my secret room would be a very well organized cleaning closet with vacuums lining the walls, buckets, mops, different chemicals and one set of yellow rubber gloves...
"Hunting brown people for sport is bad, but not as bad as harshing the vibe at a party" is a fascinating take to find in a romantic comedy, not least of all because the prince from Red White & Royal Blue is saying it to the daughter of Snow White's evil queen.
I really love that Jenny said “Army” every time instead of “Marines” because it’s the branch most likely to get mad about the distinction, AND this is behind a paywall so they can’t even oorah in the comments without having paid to do so
one of em showed up and we bullied her away lol
Yes, a "no military"/active duty military/first responders dating policy is a thing some people have irl. I come from a family with a long history of military service, and I've heard some of the women in my family talk about not wanting relationships with service members or first responders (unless they've transitioned to desk work) because of the all worry they saw their mothers go through. I think having strong feelings about that (one way or the other) is more of a thing Army/Marine/etc brats go through though specifically because of their upbringing
My favourite rom couple hands down is Evelyn and Rick from The Mummy. I'm not sure if it's considered a romcom though, it's more rom adventure
My secret room would be full of Legend of Zelda, G4 MLP, Final Fantasy and Homestuck merch. It’d be like half gamer set up but also like a chamber bedroom a princess would sleep in. I’d also have a huge trans flag over my bed,
I am so glad you mentioned the prince and me. As a Danish person I am particularly baffled by that movie. Why does the prince have to be from Denmark if they're just gonna make up everything about the country instead of like, a vaguely European fictional country like they did in princess diaries? Why do they all have british accents if they're danish? Why add the stupid conflict that the prince can't marry non royalty or whatever when that clearly happened with Frederik and Mary and everyone was cool with it and it was totally fine?
it's crazy how literally anything that shows the military in even a vaguely positive light can't hide how bloodthirsty and racist the average us soldier is
my secret room would be my own personal disney world recreated with all the best iterations of old attractions
My secret room is definitely like a Power Rangers armory-style room, where I have screen used and replica props, suits, and ideally, some of the vehicles 😬
this video is such a good and cozy vibe. one of my fav patreon videos for sure ❤️❤️
My secret room would be a display/storage space for all the crafting projects I get inspired to make but ultimately have no use for. Just this morning I saw a tiktok of a massive crochet crocodile plush. It's so big that it takes over a whole three seater couch. It would be so cool to make that and have it but also so inconvenient. I would love to have a secret room for that kind of stuff.
My pro-baller secret room in my mansion would be comprised of a tight Escheresque maze that holds books and snacks. Little nooks sequestered everywhere so that when you find a book you want to enjoy, you have only to roll a couple feet to find your butt in a perfectly molded literary womb. But you need to pay $10 each time you want to leave the room, for any reason. Judge me.
Snorii!
Omg I just for no reason remembered that as a child when I couldn't sleep I used to imagine how I could install a secret panic compartment in my bed because I was so terrified of the dark (and also I think burglers, lol). Do all kids just experience so much random anxiety all the time or was it just me?? Jeez
Burglars specifically were a big one for me as a kid, I've never felt so seen
My secret room would obviously be my huge massive g1 my little pony collection lovingly arranged on shelves in a beautiful and aesthetic way
DUDE The Wedding Planner is so horrific hahahaha and nobody I know has seen it
I feel like Purple Hearts guy probably could have just gotten a loan as a military service member and paid the drug dealer back without mentioning his marriage scam.
adding overboard to this list for my own sanity (one of my all time faves but the betrayal seems so insane i can’t stand by that pair)
did the youtube mirror of this one ever pass the dispute? i love to watch on tv 🙏
i am wondering the same thing! i basically can't watch on the patreon app
The fact that Matthew McConaughey’s criticism of Kate Hudson is “you took me to a Celine Dion concert” 😂 and you’re MAD about that??
Hmm, maybe a big room full of 1/12 dioramas and dollhouses.
My secret room would be the McDonald’s playroom with a whole bunch of tunnels that seem never ending
I want a secret animatronic room. I already have animatronics all over my house but hiding them in a room like behind a bookcase that reveals itself in a cool way sounds fun
@JennyNicholson as a a Luke who was in the Army….and by Army, I mean Navy; you nailed the explanation! Also how do you know enough about Military culture to know frivolous marriages are a thing, but not know the difference between the Army and Marines? I know this comment sounds really sarcastic, but I didn’t mean it that way…Love your videos!!!!
🗿
Jane Mulcahy has a good video about Purple Hearts which I recommend to anyone who’s interested in it, that movie is truly insane
Wait! I always thought that in 27 dresses she became a wedding planner and she wanted to support the first bride up until the first dance/reception and had to rush to her next bride! I watched as a kid, it IS kinda weird if she was just chasing weddings
I think it would be to cool to have a home version of the technology that Disney uses for O Canada. A circlevision experience. Where I could lay on comfy furniture in the middle of the room and turn on the Amazon rainforest or the Alps or a forest or the Sonoran Desert or Cairo or wherever. Not a traveling through the space, but just projecting it so I can feel like I'm sitting on a terrace overlooking the sea on Santorini or whatever I want.
in my secret room: from wall to wall pictures pasted onto it of roxy lalonde from homestuck. in the middle of the room will be several life sized, quarter sized, and half sized sculptures and 3D custom models of roxy lalonde from homestuck. nu pastel portraits of roxy lalonde from homestuck will be displayed all around the room done by me cuz thats my fav traditional medium. idk do u get the vibe? roxy lalonde room. pretty obvious. possible creep factor is realism portraits of what i think roxy would look like irl so maybe youd just think i have a weird obsession with an individual in my life idk
Dude… fuck yes!
I love the Charjabug. I just can’t figure out what it’s made of. Paper? Clay?
It is a (probably bootleg) deck box! So it's fabric on the outside and probably cardboard underneath keeping the shape
I think that the main character of 27 Dresses isn't obsessed with weddings so much as she is just a big pushover. That's her major character flaw, which is why she goes along with everything her sister was doing, and why she said yes to two weddings on the same night. She does love weddings, the opening scene of her as a kid establishes that. But it's more about her saving the day and wanting to be seen as helpful and kind. Even if that means putting other people's wants and needs ahead of her own.
Exactly. This aspect of her personality is backed up by her over-investment at work and bending over backwards for her boss despite being secretly in love with him
I think a secret room that's just a study/library that you enter through a bookshelf would not be creepy cause you'd go through and be like "oh yeah, this is what a secret room is obviously, this is whimsical and fun and mysterious but not scary
Non-creepy secret room idea: secret political or criminal conspiracy. So, like, The Ladykillers, or what Leonard Leo and the Federalist Society have been doing for 40 years. Whatever else it is, it's not creepy.
100% up for The Wedding Vampire being a real movie
If it could be a large basement space, theoretically because I have ALL the money, or maybe even better a huge attic space, my dream would be to divide it into four room, each one being themed on The Lord of the Rings (using the movie aesthetic). First room would be a cosy Hobbit/Bag End themed reading nook, with the big fire and the wood panelling and beams and the comfy cushioned chairs and lots of little cozy knicknacks filling the space. Second would be a big Elven Rivendell inspired bathroom, with a massive infinity pool-like tub that fills with water from a beautiful Elven statue (like the Greek ones of a woman holding a big jug that pours endless water) and all that good Art Nouveau styling and twinning plants and a fainting couch I can lounge about on like Arwen as I dramatically lose my mortality. Third would be a Dwarven style crafting room, so I can pretend to forge the One ring in a dark cavernous space lit by torchlight and just randomly hammer stuff to hear it eacho off the walls. And the last would be a Rohirrim style room, very Anglo-Saxon in style, to hold one woman banquets and loudly toast to myself as I tear into roasted boar legs and swill ale and mead. This room would also have a crown, because you obviously have to wear that while swilling mead. Actually, now that I think about it, if I had the money I'd just do this to my actual house, each room LOTR themed and I'd be telling everyone around it. I have no shame.
I've been told by people more familiar with the US military than I am that it's a common joke that if you're a woman visiting a base, you'll be married by the time you leave because all the soldiers want those sweet benefits. It's crazy that the movie portrays this as such a huge deal that everyone has qualms about. I mean the movie just seems awful over all, that scene where they harrass the poor waitress at the bar just immediately wiped any romantic potential in my eyes. Just awful. Clearly whoever wrote this just loves the military and wanted to fantasize about taming a shrew or whatever.
I assumed the secret room would be like a 50 shades of gray kink playroom type thing. Which I think is actually the least creepy type of secret room you can have, because if it's a sex thing at least I immediately understand why it's a secret
Unfortunately my secret room would be full of Hatsune Miku figures
I can’t wait until I get through law school so I can follow some rich asshole around while he goes shopping 😂
Owen Hunt jumpscare warning for Made of Honor
Speaking of being uncomfortable, my secret room would contain all the terrible decor items I want to own, but know people will judge me for having. These include: enormous artisanal German meat plushies, a functional lamp that is also a taxidermy chicken with a lightbulb in its butt, unsettling Mascots of Yore, and any item of furniture that either looks like food but isn't, or has teeth and/or udders, but shouldn't. Full disclosure, this secret room is something I've already made plans for irl, since many of these items are affordable enough for me to own, but - hypocritically - if I went to someone's house and they had even a few of them just sitting out like it was normal, I would assume that person was a serial killer.
58:36 "So we're good enough to fight for your ass [etc]" just made me inadvertently blurt an all-caps "EW" in the middle of a crowded skytrain. (Update: "aye-rab" just got a second "EW;" this dialogue is so gross lol). Can we track down whoever is responsible for Purple Heart and try them at the Hague? Dozens of strangers staring at you at 9am feels like it ought to be a war crime. Also, this movie is rated 69% 'fresh' by audience members on Rotten Tomatoes, which makes me genuinely feel like I have more in common with my cats than I do with several members of my own species. This day is turning out to be bleaker and more uncomfortable than I was anticipating.
Jenny: I don't know anything about the army. Me: Yeah, me neither! *Jenny talks about "the army"* Me: Oh my god, she REALLY doesn't know anything about the army.
My dream for a house someday is actually to have a dedicated snake/reptile room. I felt so seen when you mentioned a snake room in your video because that’s my perfect DREAM. But how could I make it a secret?? I would desperately want to show EVERYONE all of my snakes whenever they came over!!
the newspaper version of women posting their L's made me laugh
I’m so against people saying You’ve Got Mail is a toxic relationship! It’s never a secret that they are in competition as retailers, and although her store goes out of business eventually it’s not because he is such an evil predatory corporate shark who decides to take her down specifically and then feels guilty later. It’s just…capitalism. And they do genuinely become real friends afterwards so she already forgave him before they become romantically involved. And the secret pen pal thing is the romcom premise part so I agree with Jenny that it gets a pass through suspension of disbelief.
capitalism is a toxicity on human existence and its relationship to our species has been abusive since we entered it so there's that
Secret room has a tunnel with rail-like vehicle that takes me far away to an underground, air conditioned room, where i can observe wildlife in the local woods that's mostly focused around a large pond. The room has a large glass panel that's half submerged in the water so I can see all the underwater creatures but is mirrored or something on the other side so the animals can't see me and be sacred away.
Can we be friends? This is way cooler than my snake room
As much as I absolutely LOVE sleepless in Seattle and have watched it multiple times - Meg Ryan’s character is suspect in it. Legit having an emotional affair stalking another man who isn’t her boyfriend
I will say you can just be in the army - it's so funny to hear people talk about the military when they didn't grow up in it. All of the branches are called The Armed Forces and the brances are the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, the Marines, the Coast Guard, and more recently the Space Force.
Wait as a native San Diegan it low-key is a big military town...
I’ve actually been avoiding watching this one because EVERYONE trashes You’ve Got Mail and it’s one of my all time favorite comfort movies. So hearing that you also like it and quote it endlessly with family was a huge relief, although I was willing to hear your hot takes on it if you didn’t like it haha! I made a video of random stuff my mom and I quote for a Mother’s Day gift and a HUGE chunk of it was stuff from this movie alone, it’s a household classic
Secret pool with jungle theming omfg
I think I did watch You've Got Mail maybe when we used to rent movies from the video store growing up. But when I was in college studying musical theater in the early 2010s someone introduced me to the musical She Loves Me, and described it as adapted from the same source material as You've Got Mail. Like as though of course I'd have heard of this famous movie even if I didn't know the musical. So it's interesting that it's considered obscure itself.
It’s not an obscure film. It made $250 million in 1998. It’s a certified blockbuster.
love this video! is the youtube mirror still under dispute?
I understand what you mean but I do think it’s possible to be a very, very social butterfly with friends from different periods of life (your college friends vs. your work friends vs. your childhood friends) also my interpretation is just that she has horrible horrible boundaries so she said yes to both weddings but she wanted to preserve the magic of both weddings so she devised the whole scheme
I agree! I am (and I think the movie is too) way more judgemental of the brides who seem to be asking this woman they don’t know all that well to be their bridesmaid just because she’s so fantastic at wedding planning. Like why would she be at the cake tasting with you? That’s so unreasonable to ask.
Runaway Bride is a bad concept for a romcom but a great concept for a character study centering on loneliness in the modern era
You've Got Mail is also my pet romcom lol. Have you seen The Shop Around the Corner, the Jimmy Stewart movie it's based on? It's very fun, highly recommend.
I have two secret rooms I’d want.. a mirror collection room cuz I love mirrors, and a human sized cat tree room/hamster tube room where I could climb into comfy cubbies and nap… presumably I could combine the rooms… would need at least a skylight window cuz I hate the idea of spending a long period of time in a room without windows or natural light of any kind.
I’m late to the party and have a very typical answer, but i’d want a secret miniatures room. Train sets. Tiny farms with tiny animals. Theme parks and city blocks with working electricity. Swing-open dollhouses. Maybe even fantasy sets that require some thought to make structurally possible. Real-life minecraft/sim game room basically.
REMEMBER ME MENTIONED I LOVE THAT MOVIE. I love the surprise jumpscare 9/11
"Through gorilla magic, and also soul magic."
The plot of Purple Heart kills me because I’ve met people in the army who got married for mutually beneficial reasons and were just roommates lmao. Like it’s one of the more stable military marriage types I’ve seen.
Not netflix producing a US Army propaganda romcom
That military rom com you talked about sounded like the most genuinely abhorrent movie ever
My secret room is full of Funko Pops
Cruelty Squad core
My secret room would be a murder basement
Well it won’t be a secret to the people taken down and murdered in there, so in a way it’s nice you’ll be forced to share it with someone
I always thought it would be fun to have a secret room behind a giant bookcase, where you pull a book to rotate the bookcase into a room of - more bookcases. There's a comfy chair and it's just a nice peaceful reading nook.
My brother designed one of these for a an office he worked at. The actual hidden space was just an unfinished loft area you had to climb a funky ladder to get to, but the secret-book latch really worked.
I have a non-secret piano room in my house, which coincidentally is also my housemate's non-secret sewing room. I hope they don't find out about me.
Sleepless in Seattle is the best Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan pairing. The soundtrack is awesome.
You've Got Mail is a remake of a 1930s movie called Little Shop Around the Corner. It starred Jimmy Stewart.
My secret room would be an indoor, peaceful (i.e. childfree and probably sound proof) oasis. There would be some kind of water - a pond, waterfall or both - with a designated reading area as well as a separate listening area with a lot of my headphone/audio equipment collection safely stored but easily accessible. Plus a mini fridge with drinks and snacks. So far, so normal - right? Then the room would be adorned with my favorite succulents and carnivorous plants….and I’d have attractive, but species-appropriate, habitats for some of my favorite reptiles and invertebrates. Also a high quality sound system to set the ambiance. Anyone who found my secret room would know a lot more about me but be left with an infinite number of questions. 🤷♀️
Let me clarify - I am not a child-hater. I actually have 7 kids (two sets of twins - we never planned to have this many). I am used to being smothered with love, so a super-secret, quiet adult place would be exactly what my exhausted 36yo soul needs! 🤣
58:06 i went to university in a city with a major military school in it and i did in fact have a 'no military' dating policy
Hugh Grant also plays against type in Bridget Jones, because he actually DOES cheat on her. I pray you one day do a video on what i call the Mungoverse (hugh grant cinematic universe) bc looking at his entire filmography set against each other is insane the guy has like maybe three distinct modes of acting but they slap every time
Mine would probably be a private movie theater, with a collection of all the movies I could possibly want, but in their most collectable version like steelbooks, criterion collection etc.
I thought about this, but I'd want to use it to show movies to other people.
Agreed that Hugh Grant is at his best in rom coms when he is in shy, hesitant, nerdy depressed mode, rather than cocky “charmer”. Two other movies where he has that persona that I like, though neither is a traditional rom com: The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain, and Sense & Sensibility
isn't "Julia Roberts" fully pregnant at the end of Notting HIll?
Thank you for explaining the pony. New member here.
I'm just gonna say, you have no idea
The worst part of “the Prince and Me” is when she takes of her shoes to dance barefoot with a broom across the floor of the dingy dark dive bar where she works. Though possibly this shows she was meant to be a princess all along… impervious to vomit and crushed up peanut shells when overcome by the need to prance about.
My secret room would be one of those liminal town scenes that you'll occasionally stumble on in museums. Like, it would just be a quaint little American main street with a faux sky that transitions from day to night and plays constant looping sounds of horse clopping, cricket chirps, and the occasional firework. I've always found these types of scenes equal parts unnerving and peaceful. The only caveat to this secret room is that I probably wouldn't be able to keep it secret for very long, because I'm too much of a chicken to populate the shops with mannequins and, knowing me, I'd get too lonely after a while. How long does it have to stay secret? Can I only let my basketball boyfriend inside, or can I let in more people as time goes on? I want to host movies for the little league team in the cinema and have pie eating contests in the town square, both of which aren't solo activities.
I so badly want to say that my secret room would be something nice like an indoor garden or something, or a nice room for my trinkets, but I know myself. I know it would be figurines, and I know there would be 1000 Hatsune Miku figures, and I know it would be a secret because I would be mortified if anyone saw
My secret room: It's a library, but it's a library of all the books that I like to read or want to read but I think people would tease me for reading - every children's book that I'm still deeply attached to, the cheesiest manga/light novels in existence, books that I like to make jokes about because they're corny but are still funny/fun to read. I just need a place to put all this stuff that I don't want every casual visitor to see and make jokes about but I still can't stand to get rid off because I get so attached to books in general. The chairs are a variety of things that are really comfy to sit in, including bean bag chairs, but nothing matches. There's no aesthetic involved, just a bunch of stuff I like. All the wall space that doesn't have bookshelves has a bunch of drawings that I've done but they're not great, so I don't want to show them off to anybody.
After thinking it over some more, I think I'd also include a mini kitchenette or snack station so I can hang out there for small meals and snacks. That's where I'd keep all the food I like that either nobody else likes or things I just don't want to share with anybody. I also want two desks or work tables for art projects and writing projects, and while I'm at it, I'll throw in a sewing area! This is just a space for all the things I want to do that I don't want anybody interfering with, projects that may or may not work out, and books and hobbies that I enjoy but other people would find weird or laughable.
Not surprised to learn that you don't like Matthew McConaughey as a romantic lead. After all, you did turn him into a spider once.
When you were describing the one about the gorilla keeper, for a moment I thought you were going to say “she dies in a car accident and her heart gets donated to one of the gorillas” and that the movie was about a guy trying to come to terms with the fact that his wife was reincarnated into a gorilla. I can imagine why that relationship wouldn’t work out.
Silver Linings Playbook is one of the couples that work out I think. That movie rules.
Has the YouTube mirror cleared?
Dang I love How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and My Best Friend's Wedding; spicy takes. I love an impromptu singalong. But my secret room would be a replica of the Pokemon Channel bedroom. With a replica themed tv, like maybe the Hoppip one hooked up with the game on Gamecube. The cards, the Plush. A sliding door to a fake backyard. My childish smeagle masterpieces. Sigh.
My secret room would be a secret garden with a pond that has goldfish, and if I couldn't have real plants and trees I would have fake ones. I'd paint the walls to look like the rest of the garden.
I love "27 Dresses"! It's my favorite romcom. I think it works, but I get her criticism. On the other hand, I can't stand "You've Got Mail" because I always hated that he ruined her business and all she's got in the end is a corner in his store. The original, "Shop Around the Corner," is a lot better
All this Jane Nichols slander. God forbid a woman have a multicultural wedding hobby...
I WILL NEVER FORGET MADE OF HONOR!!! My mom dragged me and my best friend to see that movie with her and her friend, who also brought her 4 year old daughter. We were both 12 and didn’t want to be there and the theater was empty other than us, so we sat far away from my mom and loudly reacted to the movie the whole time. I’ll never forget my friend yelling, “OH NO! HER COINS!” when the female lead dropped a bowl of coins when they kissed. I’m also pretty sure that I learned about anal beads from that movie… It’s one of my favorite movie theater experiences ever, but I never had the urge to revisit the movie itself, but it started a tradition of my best friend and I deliberately picking bad movies to see in theaters because we could loudly react in an empty theater and make ourselves laugh.
At the risk of sounding a bit stupid, this is such a main character memory. Man, I wish I had memories like that. But Idk how to find movies that are bad enough to warrant an empty theatre, or how to get one of my friends to go like in the middle of a weekday to avoid crowds
"I think that's the most offensive part of the movie, is the title."
i think i actually would want a soundproof room for singing, playing instruments, and doing voices. because i enjoy all those things, but i am also extremely embarrassed to be witnessed practicing something before i am good at it. if i was mega rich, I'd probably see a therapist about that, but in the meantime a soundproof room would be perfect.
Honestly, same! Sorry Jenny but a soundproofed room in my house where I can play music and not disturb anyone else sounds awesome.
Okay one more thing. I almost married for health insurance so I spent a long time looking into it and its not illegal, it's not a scam, even in military situations. The government does NOT legislate whether or not you are in love - unless immigration is involved, you can get married for any reason
Its so funny watching this when the current topic winning during may is "remember every movie you've ever seen." Like she warned us!
I love to find other people and especially other families who have an extreme appreciation of you've got mail, it's like the official movie of every woman in my family, we LOVE IT
In Purple Heart her name should have been Valorie and they could have called her stolen Valerie
This has probably been noted already, but the twist Jenny imagines for 27 Dresses where the heroine ends the movie single and appreciating herself without needing a romance to "complete" her is basically the ending for Muriel's Wedding. Great movie, amazing performance by Toni Collette.
I'm so sorry, my rich guy space would be a spacious soundproof room with a concert grand piano. You cant play the piano at odd hours, even an electronic keyboard with headphones can cause a racket with the physical sound of the keys being pressed. A room where I can just go and play whenever I need or want sounds amazing. Walking into the basement of an otherwise normal house to find a recreation of a blockbuster store might force me out of the house. The liminal vibes might kill me.
I do want to say that it's bizarre to realize that the current president of the US, who nowadays is a notorious fascist who openly desires the genocide of me and many of my friends, just sort of used to show up in a load of movies for no reason other than that he was rich and famous. Isn't that kind of strange? Like if a normal society was possible, it probably wouldn't do that right?
The power of money and notoriety is frankly terrifying
My rich guy secret room would be a gaming room with bookshelves full not only with games, but also with anime DVDs, manga and light volume novels and figurines. However, contrary to the weirdo otaku stereotype, all the figurines would be of either male characters or wholly unsexualised female characters, and a dartboard with Sasuke Uchiha's face on it.
My secret room would have floor-to-ceiling shelves stuffed with my plushie collection and cosplay stuff. I’d like to have at least one full-size human mannequin, ideally either sitting at a tea party or behind a desk in a “we’ve been expecting you” type pose. Edit: I’m going to double down on the mannequins and deck my plushie/cosplay secret room with at least eight of them, each decorated in beautiful costumes from various eras of fashion in completely innocuous poses like fancy ladies at high tea. The Tea Room.
My secret room is my craft room, and it's soundproofed because I have misophonia and I want to go in there and not need my headphones on the entire time Or if I'm rich enough to have a secret room I'm rich enough to also have a bunch of my little ponies, plushies, and music boxes. I show this to guests with all the appropriate acting about it being a secret, but I show it to like everyone so it's purely for the aesthetics and fun of having a secret room
my secret room would be a room full of all the clown memorabilia i can find from second hand shops, because there's been at least one clown thing in like 80% of the second hand shops i've visited. I'd buy them all, and store them lovingly in my secret room.
The being against dating military guys is absolutely a thing near bases. I should know I was of that opinion in the puget sound my whole life lol
My secret room would be a collection room of everything I consider a guilty pleasure and wish I was ashamed of, so no one would know about: CDs of music I like, mangas I love but are too weird to talk about, books I have read and reread whose cover I can't display in my house, my ice cream plastic spoon collection... That's not very original but it would be really scary for my partner to find.
Some of my favourite rom-coms are 'Keeping the Faith', 'Saving Face', and 'Practical Magic' (if that counts?). But I wondered if you've seen "Jenny's Wedding" (if that counts?!) because it's a really bad movie. My secret room would probably be considered creepy and worrying in terms of Health & Safety as I kind of just want a fun gym with climbing walls, a trampoline, and indoor parkour training set-up.
Oh god the couple in Jenny’s Wedding is ABSOLUTELY breaking up
Secret room would be a huge secret library
13:59 i wish i was kidding, that is the exact plot of the DC comics couple Hawk Man & Hawk girl, they have reincarnations dating back to egypt, they're always fated to meet and die horribly
My secret room would hold the executive in charge of Youtube disputes hostage until he approves Jenny's video. That's legal, right? : /
My secret room would be an elaborate bathroom. Huge comfy tub, a fridge, big TV, all of the bubble baths and bath bombs and salts. Candles everywhere. Led lights to change the mood. It would have to be secret because I'm a basket ball man and my teammates would make fun of me for my elaborate self care room. They would know about my love for being submerged in hot water though
Anyway I'm sure someone has said this but my secret room would be a plain room filled only with the Buzzy animatronic.
Oh my god. Your how to lose a guy in 10 days airplane movie rant just brought back a core memory for me. Funnily enough flying from Australia to the US - my channel I got in a delirious loop on was the Johnny Depp Willy Wonka film, and I would wake up from shockingly bad sleep at the same toothpaste factory moment every single time. I felt like I was going insane.
Donald Trump jumpscare.
My secret room would be a storage unit full of childhood memorabilia and family heirlooms that I don't have much use for, but would break my mom's heart if I actually got rid of it all. It's a secret because how do you explain that to someone?
I want my secret room to be an outside area. The door will open to a secret secluded outside area. It is actually an exit
Does anyone know the story of how she got that giant pony? 😍 is it new??
It wandered in from the plush forest that surrounds Jenny’s house
Is the YouTube link still down?
Yes, it actually received new claims on a couple other clips which also have to be disputed. Which concerns me because I was planning to upload a Barbie preview and the next ramble this week and having 3 struck videos at once can jeopardize a small channel. I'm considering removing it and trying a new upload, or I could give up putting clips in the new ramble
I feel so validated to hear you talking about 'You've got Mail'. I was a teenager when my mom brought it home as our first ever film on DVD and the whole family watched it. And now, in the modern day, my brother and I joke about how today Tom Hanks' chain store would be cast as the victim of Amazon.
so the runaway bride - was julia roberts roped into that with some sneaky underhanded contract, or blackmail? because the plot sounds like a julia roberts biopic, including her ditching the groom keiffer surherland and running off with the best man jason patric. if only i had the motivation to go look up the timeline of when the movie was released and compare to her relationships.
It was really funny going from this video into the ramble from the previous month (I'm behind okay), because that video starts with a foam forest scenario. It's the Jenny foam forest cinematic universe spanning both space and time.
My secret room would be full of thrifted scavenged junk I'm in the process of cleaning and repairing. I have this secret room. It is very messy. That's why it's secret.
My secret room would be a room full of knitting/weaving/etc. machines that i tinker and buy expensive parts for. There's also a lot of yarn hanging everywhere so it looks like it's the secret room of a radioactive spider. Very little garment comes out of the room, i frog almost everything, it's purely because i like to think about machines and fibers. Like a perpetual giga project.
My secret room would be a small cozy pillow fort that is very well hidden, like with a hatch under a bed that you need to open with a coin or something... or just a pillow fort under a table or something. I think the least creepy secret room would be full of some valuable thing, because then its kinda just a shitty vault. Like if I found a secret room that was full of gold, I wouldnt be freaked out... just jealous LOL
YouTube mirror?
Any update on the YouTube mirror? :O
In the context of the question - I would have a secret room that is Jabba's Throne Room exact in every detail. And there would be mist and everything would be or seem to be slightly grimy in some way. That probably seems pretty normal except for the actors chained in there. Did I say that? There's actors dressed up and chained in there for when I'm on a basketball break. And I don't even dress as Jabba. I'd be one of those characters that super fans create entire histories about but you never hear them say anything or see them ever again and Wookiepedia calls out a specific Star Wars year and talks about how they were in Jabba's Throne Room for some reason.
btw as kids we did find a real secret room. It was in an attic crawlspace that only a child could have found. You took off a vent thing in a bathroom and crawled along a dark narrow passage and all of a sudden it opened up to a little room with a chair and a rug and some sort of painting of something like a chicken. I wanted to keep it a secret from the adults but my sister immediately snitched. I still was able to hide there once when my Mom was losing her mind at me.
my secret room is a Belle library that somehow doesn't allow for technology like cell phones to work. Which is creepy and scary inherently but it would be to force me to concentrate on reading and writing without distractions. Also I am a horror writer so I think my secret writing room being a little scary would be to my benefit. And if I died in there, I think even my loved ones would appreciate the lore of it.
My secret room is another smaller house. One of those mini houses Where everything is an arms width away and things fold up to make everything fit. It has a small lawn so you can appreciate the compact construction of it as you approach, and a skylight.
I want Jenny to rank Disney animated couples based on how likely they'll last more than ten years together 🤣
still no luck on the youtube mirror?
I've also been waiting for ages, but today I gave up and am just watching with the Patreon player lol You win (?) this time, YouTube
Losing over the army propaganda movie "Yes my friend is racist but hes also saving you personally so its fine that he's racist. So shut up." And shes like "so true i will right a pro army song now"
this being like the third video in a row where you mention the faux-forest is taking me out
When I saw the title of the video, I was hoping "You've got mail" would get the thrashing it deserves and I was sadly disappointed. Tom hanks spends at least 2/3 of the movie lying to Meg Ryan and her first reaction on finding out is essentially "I really hoped you were lying to me the whole time"? That relationship is going to spectacularly go up in flames (and they will lowkey both deserve it)
that giant gen 3 mlp is insane i love her so much
I’d say Princess and the Frog is a good execution of the ladykiller falling in love trope, there’s probably some animes that pull it off too
My secret room is a giant bathroom. But like the most luxurious and fantastic bathroom I can think of, and I can’t think very well, but I would like moss and vines and fairy lights and a giant bathtub that’s a spiral that you walk into to get to the center that gets warmer as you go into the center so you don’t have to deal with the temperature too-hot-too-cold hot potato dance. Also a reclining chair and a huge vanity and many fancy makeup and stuff to put on (I don’t wear or know how to use makeup btw). I would like some rats/ small animals that would not mind living there with me and I can also try to build an ecosystem that allows them to thrive but not overpopulate without me, so meaning maybe I would need like a fox or two, but yeah. That’s my secret room and I think it’s actually quite viable, and I think if my husband or kids find it, other than being perplexed that they never found this room before, they would be like, “Ah actually this makes sense for her”, so I think I’m safe on the creepy factor.
This sounds like my actual animal crossing house's bathroom, weirdly enough
Happy Easter Jenny! Also, all the Jennyites!
somebody needs to write that heart-hopping scifi fan fiction. it's like the opposite of Never Let Me Go.
I’m just now watching last months video and right off the bat you also mention a faux-forest saw trap to kill Evan Hansen, and now I have more questions about your secret room 😧
I know the comments on another post are t the place to do this, but Jenny- please tell me about the lore of the Cheesecake Factory demon: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTjFvA31T/
My secret room would be re-creation of the Horizons boarding queue. With the music playing 24x7. And if you turned that final corner, it would just lead to a black hallway that went nowhere. Or maybe there would be a David Lynch statue standing at the end of it. Nope, nobody would think I'm insane.
It's so funny to build that instead of building even one scene in the actual ride. Come on build the space kitchen or something
I was waiting for 50 first dates to end up in this list, that movie is weird and so is that relationship
I love your secret room. That is my favorite secret room and I want it to exist so bad. I feel like my answer doesn't count maybe, but like a reading room behind a bookcase door, so like the existence of the room itself would be secret.
27 Dresses - Wedding Vampire is my favorite take
I keep seeing this video of a secret Minecraft room pop up on my Instagram and I think that's pretty cool but wouldn't work for me practically because I'm a grown adult with poor role-playing skills so what would I even do in there? Anyways I would keep a secret live-in artist who's like really famous which is why it's a secret and they only paint and sculpt me and maybe my bf if I'm feeling generous. Also Walt Disney's frozen head is in there cause why not
My secret room would be a replica of one of those cave holes you fall into in Ocarina of Time. Complete with the spiders, chest, and a whole cow. You can hear the cow from the outside of the room but if anyone asks I deny the cow noise.
mine would be indoor ninja warrior room complete with the lake of water underneath that you fall into, I think they would be a little scared at first but no one can resist an obstacle course
Idk if this makes it better or worse but my secret room would be a bdsm dungeon with play space for little space and a little movie fort setup
Secret room: Historical and Fantasy Weapons. You enter and it's like the knife display in Knives Out, with swords and rapiers and axes. Some of them are real antiques, some are based on movies. And in a corner, there's a bunch of mannequins with missing limbs, stab wounds, and disembodied heads.
RETURN TO ME IS MY FAVORITE ROM COM IN THE WHOLE WORLD. THIS MADE MY DAY LMAO
Does anyone remember the video where she talks about why she doesn’t like Bugs Bunny? Idk why it makes me laugh lol
1 hour 40 minutes 12 seconds into the "Abandoned Animatronics" ramble
My secret room contains a model of the house with little stick figures representing who is in the house at that time
This is insanely creepy regardless if it is a secret or not. I'm imagining the doll house in the Haunting of Bly Manor and the figures moving around on their own
The ending of Kate and Leopold always left me with existential dread.
Pinball Parlor. I don't know how creepy that would be.
There are several bases in socal i think. Thus why people living near them may have rules like that for themselves? Idk
Patrick dempsey was in two of the movies discussed and the lead of one yet she wouldnt say his name. Shes got beef with mcdreamy
My secret room is my Warhammer painting room, its obvious why it would be a secret :)
I haven’t put much thought into what my secret room would be but as a kid I always liked the hideaway in Out of the Box, so definitely something that was bigger on the inside
I don't know that I would have a secret room that I actually used. But I might have one with a door that I would tell people not to open. There would, however, be clues scattered around the house with hints about how to open it. The curious and observant amongst my guests might pick up on those clues and decide to try their luck at seeing what was inside. Those that successfully pieced together the puzzle would unlock the door, opening it to see a tiny room with a few artificial skeletons inside. I would then come up behind them, exclaiming, "You got me!" And then everyone would laugh. Good times.
My secret room would be a stingray pit. Just a giant hole with some stingrays and other aquatic life. The water will have loop de loops so the stingways will have some stimulation but I want to amass my own pet stingray.
i know this is probably you indulging your love for stingrays and their enrichment but I am picturing you as an extremely odd Bond villain from one of the lower-ranked Roger Moore movies
My secret room would be an indoor pool with a hot tub. Like you would find at a hotel.
This is the best one lol
The door to what I claim is my "secret room" leads to another hallway in my sprawling manor. The decor changes, no longer the Edwardian furnishings I seem to prefer but to a delicate French Racoco. After wandering some time you, my house guest, discover a strange woman you've never seen before. At first you think she's a ghost, but after going back you discover she is in fact my business competitor (in basketball.) Our manors are so large they are connected, unbeknownst to either of us. You fall in love with her, in a surprise twist the romcom is actually a thriller as you team up to plot my basketball demise. (I don't know how sports work)
Impeccable
I don’t know what I’d put in a secret room, but my requirement is that it is a little door, that isn’t easily noticed, and requires an ornate key to open (similar to Coraline)
My secret room would be terrarriums with lizards
“I hope the groom brings a big dog catchers net” ah yes, just like in Stuck on a Blizzard with Jennifer Lawrence
Jenny Praising You've got Mail, my personal soft childhood obsession gives me so much joy <3 There's something so realistic, yet forgiving and friendly about the film that really feels spectrum friendly and nice <3
My secret room would be covered in paper, floor to ceiling, and be full of art supplies. The point of the secret art room is not to make good art, but fun art. You can’t be too messy with paint, clay, charcoal, etc, because the room is protected by the paper which can be swapped out or even used as a canvas itself. It’s kind of a sensory play room mixed with a vent space if that makes sense. Though, similar to the piano problem, I don’t know how to keep it a secret when I always leave the room covered in smudges of dirt and random colors.
Hi Jenny, please go to Fyre Fest 2 so you can tell us all about it thanks ♥️
The $2 a month I spend on this Patreon might be the best value of my entire life so far.
My secret room would just be a planetarium room. Star Projector, dark blue walls, big bean bag chairs, and random glow-in-the-dark items.
i love romcoms and i love this video thank you
oh i just got to the part about the inside forest and i love that too but could we please also have like a lazy river or some kind of water in addition to the ball pit ponds
Jenny, you need to watch the 1990 television version of the Phantom of the Opera with Charles Dance and Teri Polo - the phantom has a huge, secret, underground forest room with stuffed animals!! Maybe just... know that it's still creepy. Sweet, but creepy.
You've Got Mail is such a good litmus test because it's infuriating to gay women and anyone healthy enough to say no to a terrible man, but it makes women like me go, "it do be like that sometimes." It was like that for Nora Ephron- the shit she had to put up with. And we're socialized to put up with it! If that movie infuriates you, you're lucky.
I’d be really curious if it worked at all with another male star.
My secret room would be a room for crafting sewing and knitting/crochet. It would have a comfy couch for knitting/crochet, and a really good set up for my sewing machine. But really, the main thing would be a lot of shelves and storage for all my yarn and fabrics. And because this is a secret room and no one else is allowed entrance (and in this scenario I am rich), then I can accumulate all the amazing fabrics and yarn I find, and will totally use for some project some day, with out being judged by my family for not using them and mostly just storing them, and occasionally pulling them out to think of all the lovely projects I will make with them some day.
My hidden room would be full of pokemon plushies (specifically every single one from the sitting cuties line)
My hidden room would probably be like a VR Vtuber studio
My wife's secret room: fish. No further explanation provided. My secret room: a catio jungle gym as a dedicated play space for our 4 cats. Secret because it would be filled with an inordinate amount of fancy cat trees and expensive furniture that would be too embarrassing to show a guest.
As someone who lives in San Diego— I can vouch for people saying they don’t date military
Yesss I was thinking during that whole time that it was so SD coded
Hmmm secret room maybe WOULD be all those snake terrariums? I have one snake but having more would be cool. Or a big play room for a different kind of pet, like a few rats.
My secret room is a single gaming chair and a laptop on an ikea table. Like, might as well lean into the creepiness, right?
i fuckin LOVE you've got mail
my ideal secret room would be something like what kim possible has or hannah montana or lane in gilmore girls, where you flip a cupboard and then there's a whole other set up. It would be like a cool secret ghost and folklore and kim possible esque, buffy vibe of a library and myth busting layer but like *tasteful* :')
My secret room would be a doll customizing room where I take apart dolls and create new, cool dolls. I already have that now and it already scares people. It's in my closet, which I call my cloffice. (Closet + office.) There are a lot of doll parts all over the place. It doesn't need to be secret to be scary, but that would up the creepiness by a lot.
I loved return to me!!
Just wondering, does it usually take a long time to resolve a Youtube dispute?
Thirty days minimum and that’s assuming she actually wins the dispute. If the Patreon video player isn’t working you should file a tech support request. On the app tap on your profile picture in the upper right and Support will be on the menu. It might take them a few days to respond.
just started watching and i’m so jealous of your awesome giant pony plush
Living in San Diego, the “no military” thing is legit
I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but there's a Marine base around San Diego, so the Purple Hearts setting does make sense. Apparently the rest of the plot doesn't tho, lol. Also, I was DYING when you revealed that the "army" guy was in the marines, but you kept calling him an army guy. I can't tell how much of it was for the bit and how much you just genuinely didn't know, but just in case, some people get very touchy about that, fyi. Also, I saw How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days in theaters, and I have mercifully forgotten almost all of it; that singing clip was painful.
My secret room would be like a small town main street, with a gazebo, swing benches, water fountain, and fake grass. All the little shops would have functioning stuff inside, like a 6 person movie theater + concession stand, the craft store would store all my supplies, a tiny bar with a karoake stage, an arcade with pin ball machines, etc. The crown jewel of this room being a loft that encircles the space, thats a go cart track. And since we're going all out here, it's all designed and decorated by meow wolf collective artists. The creep factor is both, what is this town? And, the betrayal you'd feel finding out I've been hoarding such opulent fun all to myself.
re purple hearts san diego absolutely has a high enough density of army guys for a blanket policy against dating them lol
my secret room would be an inside-outside (outside-inside?) room like yours, but I want a little porch scene with dusk lighting and fake fireflies on the walls. and in the middle is an industrial strength swing bench for swinging with as much velocity as possible. that’s all the room is for.
My secret room would be a pond room where i can swim and float with little fish and shrimps and snails
My ideal secret room is my own indoor theme park. Which is both wildly unrealistic and extremely creepy to find as the live in girlfriend. I've always had dreams of being in a mall or theme park alone and they've always been really comforting to me, but not sure it translates to irl at all 😅
My roommate has a very, very chatty bird; a secret noise proof room to play piano in would be heavenly
My secret room would be a basement pool with cave vibes and low lighting. It would be like a spa but also have slides. I can only imagine this would be terrifying (like the Pools game where you walk around liminal empty pools)
I'm tempted to say my secret room would just be a completely nondescript living room, just for irony. And I guess just to mess with whoever went snooping and found it.
My secret room is just all of my empty prescription bottles and boxes. I want to see all of the powerful chemicals I've imbued in order to combat crippling clinical depression and OCD.
my secret room would be a dimly lit, fully stocked saloon which plays 50s and 60s old cowboy songs that I've never heard by Marty Robins or something. It has a pool table, darts, and a table in the corner wreathed in shadow where you can light up a cigar like a mysterious stranger. You can sit at the bar with your comically large hat pulled low over your eyes, sipping your whisky on the rocks, and just feel real lonesome when you need to. Everyone sometimes get lonesome.
My secret room would be a replica of the secret foam play room at my local aquarium. It was tucked away in a room separate from the main building so most people didn't know it was there. It had a bunch of animals - whale shark, turtle, octopus, starfish, fish, stingray - and some regular rocks. They were set up so that you could jump from one to the other without ever touching the floor. It would be creepy though!
I think I would want a mini city that i could stomp around in and destroy like godzilla
my secret room is absolutely, 100%, a cat room. not like, a room where my cats hang out that can only be accessed through a cat door. more like... nobody knows I am fostering 18 cats, they're all in this spacious luxurious room. I literally have a Pinterest board about this, I would absolutely foster more cats if I had a larger space, but I feel like I already accept fosters too quickly, so I absolutely would accept them and just neglect to tell people in my life
A fully functioning replica of both the Godzilla and Jet Jaguar suits from Godzilla VS Megalon. Probably on a fiberglass stage landscape with trees and rocks and things. Maybe two dummies shaped like Megalon and Gigan for me and bae to fight.
coming back to this after days of deliberation, my secret room would be like a pleasant version of a padded cell where the entire floor is a cushion with gorgeous quilted wall hangings and a couple big windows, an astonishing variety of throw pillows and a little tea set. ultimate hangout spot for me and the cat
i want to steal the indoor forest now!
My uncreepy secret room: indoor plush forest with climbable foam structures and trees with faces. It must remain secret so that nobody can trademark and exploit my very original idea. DAMMIT I WAS WRITING THIS BEFORE THE VIDEO WAS OVER AND SHE JUST SAID IT
Shout-out to 'You've Got Mail'.
If you're in a sham marriage for military benefits but it's only a sham on one side isn't that just... Tricking someone who actually loves you into marriage for ulterior motives? Is that even a crime?? Also if a marriage is genuine on one side how does it not meet all the criteria for a real marriage?? Your partner is living with you, committed to you, and sharing legal and financial responsibilities. I think at that point all you're guilty of is being an awful person which you surely can't be thrown into military jail for
hell they gave Kissinger the NOBEL for it
Agreed with you on the Wedding Planner, its 100% a cheating movie and it was miserable to watch. Also I won't lie, I WAS metaphorically looking at you when I heard the name Penny Nicholson... lol I actually never watch rom-coms on purpose, but my friend and I bought a box of 50 random assorted dvds and blu-rays and are forcing ourselves to watch all of them... and damn are there a lot of rom coms. "Theres Something About Mary" was the most vile and unpleasant watching experience I've possibly ever had? So like whoever is reading this check that out if u want a terrible time. Its a horror movie concept disguised as a rom-com and also the sense of humor is all around disgusting. As for my secret room.... Hmm.. So in real life I have several specific rooms, most notably a dedicated clown room, but those aren't a secret... I think my secret room would be like, an irl fantasy D&D set that looks like the underdark. I want giant animatronic spiders, flumphs, and atleast 1 full size illithid.
My secret room would be a stereotypical, dimly lit home library with a fireplace, a comfy chair, and one of those slidey ladders for the bookshelves.
It’s a pun in the word “maid”. And it is supposed to suggest that he is made of honor lol wild, I know
Woahh I never would've guessed...
I'm actually sorta in the process of building a secret room?? In our main bedroom there is a little hallway in the back (with our closets coming off the hallway) leading to a loft, all of which is separate from the rest of the house. I love the idea of feeling like a tiny person and collect oversized items to pretend like I'm three inches tall 😂 In the loft area I'm specifically adding giant flowers and mushrooms and things so that I can feel like a fairy, and then I'd love to paint the walls for not just more giant grass or whatever, but for the little hallway to be this magnified brick wall with a fake crack in it (aka my closet) and then to fill the closet with giant items like buttons and spools of threads to make it look like a borrower hidey hole 🤭 My husband does know about all this, but our kids are still young toddlers and we like having our own space, so they never get into our bedroom/loft area. If I really go all out with this, they may one day see this secret room and lose their lil minds 😅
That's so awesome!!
My secret room would have a thick rope spider web that is strong enough and big enough for a fully grown human to sit on comfortably. I would then lounge on the life size spider web and engage in various activities like reading.
I don't know if anyone already said this about Purple Heart, but the movie is set in San Diego, and San Diego is a military town. I live in San Diego and have a strict no dating military policy. Top Gun is also set in San Diego.
If I had a house, and if that house had a secret room, it would be a tiny replica of the entire neighborhood complete with little neighborhood people in it. It would have wiring and light up. I'd make phone recordings of my neighbors saying things and then have their dolls have a pull string and voicebox so they could say the stuff that their humans say. So nothing creepy.
He's no longer in jail and she's a pop star. Can I make it any more obvious?
It's just the room where I keep my collection of memorabilia and merchandise related to the women's deodorant brand, Secret. Turns out this was just one of those hilarious misunderstandings and you could have gone in there any time, so actually it's not creepy or scary at all.
That Purple Hearts movie is buck wild. Romcom military propaganda. I'm not really sure who the target audience would be. It feels like it's more for the actual military men who want to feel good dying for a country that doesn't care about them than any woman. For my secret room it'd just be a nerd room, but the joke would be that there is nobody who knows me that thinks I am NOT a nerd so it would be wholly unnecessarily secret, which I think adds a layer of uncannyness since they'd wonder why I would keep it secret.
Literally just started the video but THAT FRILLY FROCKS PLUSH IS AMAZING 😍
Seconding this. Completely AWED by the amazing trickets Jenny has as PER USUAL
I lived in a Navy town growing up, STRICT no military dating stance here
secret room idea: escape room. it’d be themed (not sure which theme but i’m picturing it in a library behind a bookshelf, where you pull a book and it opens). terrifying for someone to accidentally get trapped in there, but I think all the clues would be pieces of a mysterious story and you’d uncover the story as you went through. it’d also have some fantasy/sci-fi elements like an indoor glowing treehouse. there will be a door with a glowing red exit sign on it that takes a little bit of searching (but not much) to avoid any true anxiety or trapped feeling
I assume at some point the copious amounts of plushes and merch of media I like and bought with lots of basketball dollars would warrant concern if I stuffed them all into a room I never let anyone in, because now the discoverer has to ponder if I'm normal about any of those fandoms or if I'm clearly unhinged. That would also be where the fursuit is because a secret room fursuit is going to terrify so many people even if its clearly average and next to like, completely normal convention photos and art
(im sure someone else has already pointed this out) as someone who has known people in san diego trying to date men, the "military guys" comment from that one movie with the military guys is a pretty accurate sentiment for some people there
Can corroborate this
My secret room would be an indoor lawn with flower gardens and two real trees that I’ve kept short but are big enough to support a hammock with 500lbs on it. It would always be 63F and slightly humid, and the only way to get in is to open the secret panel in the back of a wardrobe. The wardrobe is located in my home dungeon though.
I love "Return to Me." I think partly because it's like, yeah, this is weird, but also, the relationship makes sense. I also love just how wacky Gracie's family is. Just like how "You've Got Mail" has all those goofy side characters who are far more interesting to me than the main characters.
I'd probably go for a secret American Girl doll collection room where I could have all my AG stuff out, and have space to actually collect some of the playsets, and could just go hide and play with dolls. Kind of quirky if it's not secret, but absolutely creepy if it was.
I would use a secret room to store a bunch of animatronics from obscure animatronic shows of the past. Like, ones that only had one or two versions and don't exist anywhere any more. I'd be working to make a big animatronic show where they all interact, but it would be secret for now because I'd still be work shopping it.
At first I thought my secret room would just be boring because it'd pretty similar to my real "office", just with larger quantities (I already have tons of yarn and nail polish, I'd just get a lot more if I were super rich). But you're so right that making it a secret makes it creepy. What nefarious things could I potentially be using the yarn and nail polish for if it has to be kept a secret?
My secret room would be full of my taxes, medical documents, and other important records. I'd try to find as much personally identifiable information I could find about myself and store it there so I can easily find it. I'd also submit just a ton of FOIAs to government agencies for stuff I find interesting, and store it there so if I ever need sensitive personally identifiable information, or any important document, I can go find it in the room. By doing this, I circumvent the creep factor. If anyone enters my secret room to find out what dark mystery I've stashed there, they'll very quickly learn why the room is secret. If I ever showed it to someone, I could say "the room is secret because it contains a bunch of sensitive information." And most people would say "I wish you had just told me instead of being evasive, but I can understand not wanting people to know where all your important documents are"
I'm gonna be completely honest with you Jenny, my secret room is one with a bunch of fake plants from Pandora and a small replica of the Tree of Souls with hanging light strips and ambient forest sounds. And if I'm deep in the fantasy of this secret room, I would have an animatronic head and neck of an ikran that moved around that I could pet. The other decor would be a bunch of green plush pillows, blankets, and carpet for lounging, with a ton of decorative glowing plants and flowers, and maybe a small water feature. The light sources in the room, besides the Tree of Souls and "bioluminescent" plants would be some warm light lamps that flicker as if they're lit by glowing insects or flame, so I could hang out in there and read.
your hair looks so pretty :0
“What would you like us to go do, teach em pronouns???” No? I just said maybe cheering about how you’re going to go hunt down “ay-rabs” is bad? Racist even?
And Justin Tranter, who is gender non-conforming and uses they/them/theirs pronouns, wrote songs for the movie. Sucks that they had to take that gig only to have the concept of chosen pronouns be belittled.
Late to the discussion but maybe one valid secret room (at least, secret from guests, still weird to keep from ppl living with you) is if you had some sort of semi-anonymous internet fame tied to that room? Like maybe if you were a popular vtuber streamer or furry or something. I could see someone wanting to keep that under wraps for non-nefarious purposes
My secret room would totally be a pony room, but like, highly decorated and themed so it's like the ponies are running through a felt dream world and are set up in little scenes and tableau.
this is great timing for this discussion prompt because literally yesterday I was at the zoo with my friend in the aviary and I was like "if I got really wealthy I would get a room like this in my house." just a big greenhouse type room with live plants and birds flying around and waterfalls and stuff. I would just have to also have a separate smaller atrium situation for my cat because if I had free-roaming birds obviously he couldn't go in there lol. always a big fan of jenny's play/plush forest idea too-- I went to the "SMALAND" play area in ikea a couple of times as a kid and that would go crazy now as an adult. there's an indoor part of a zoo I've been to a few times that has different plush animals in the fake trees and I'm a huge fan of that too. so I see the Vision :)
Tuesday September II, Z00I
Sorry Jenny, you have accidentally sold me on 27 dresses, i think the idea of a woman with a Wedding Special Interest who just adores going to weddings and goes out of her way to be a bridesmaid as often as possible, sometimes 2 at once, and makes new friends specifically to attend their weddings is Adorable, actually! Anyway my secret room would be a perfect copy of my bedroom but its a second secret one for when i want to be alone
My secret room is Cranium Command. I STOLE BUZZY
THEY CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT
My secret room would be a napping room, with all kinds of sleep setups. Giant bed from the internet with all the built in features, hammock, little cave, pile of pillows and blankets, etc. I’d keep it secret so no one would think to come wake me up!
For some reason, I saw You've Got Mail in movie theaters, and I am 100% convinced I was there alone. It was 1998 so I would have been 12. I know my own tenuous grasp of this memory is all that is left of it. My parents would not remember that I saw it, or be able to explain why. I can only assume it was because I was really excited about the internet.
Also, I had never heard of "Return To Me" and I was only half listening while painting and was like "yeah, the wife's heart gets donated to a Gorilla, right?.... oh ok yeah of course not.."
My secret room would be an Arthurian den, like Merlin's Crystal Cave with a sword in the stone, and there'd be shelves upon shelves of Arthurian lore and big Warhammer-esque tables with terrain where I can re-enact the big battles of Arthuriana with minis. It would be all too intense and there'd be a weird Merlin costume from 'Excalibur' with a shiny skullcap
my secret room would be a full-on waifu shrine to my favorite anime guys. such things are best kept locked away from the eyes of the public
My secret room would be hinted at by a mysteriously tinted window that you can see from outside the house on an upper floor. But when you go inside there just doesn't seem to be a way to access that window. In fact it doesn't even seem like there's enough space for a room there. "What...what room does that window belong to??" It grows from curiosity to a full-blown paranoid obsession. Time to act. You keep me occupied in the kitchen by leaving an ice cream sandwich on the table. Idk why it was so effective since it just came from my own freezer. You take a sledgehammer to the wall that the tinted window's on. I'm too busy living my best life with that ice cream sandwich to intervene. Doesn't take much time to completely smash through the wall, shattering the tinted window from the inside. I finally come up to investigate after my 3rd ice cream sandwich. There's a new hole in my home. It's drafty. "I thought that wall looked really plain from the outside so I stuck a window on there. I should probably just grow climbing vines there or something." Anyway, I would probably want a music room with a ton of rare and silly instruments. It would be really hard to even *want* to keep it a secret though, tbh.
Jenny shrine! No unfortunately I am boring and my secret room would just be a gym so no one can see me work out because I’m self conscious
My secret room would be a clown room. Just to give me an excuse to collect the clown dolls that I see at thrift stores. I'd never go in there, of course. I just want a reason to collect clowns, but I don't actually want to see the clowns.
sorry obsessed w the giant mlp in the background omggg
no beastly mention makes me sad but also you did do an entire video about it before (it still makes me laugh so much)
sure there was, 29:40 /s
My secret room would be just a little coffee den. Not sure why it would be secret, because I'd probably want to share it with my partner, but I don't know. Maybe a 3d printing farm? Not sure why that would be secret either but my partner probably wouldn't have any interest in it so it may as well be a secret.
"Remember Me." How could I forget such a bizarre movie.
They do say Never Forget
my secret room would be a doll collection and it would almost ensure i’d be alone forever because of the secret doll room
Omg Frilly Frocks again! Weirdly I’ve never seen her for sale in Australia
my secret room would be a one-to-one replica of the comically large wardrobe room from barbie life in the dream house and all the clothes that come with it!!! as a 7 foot tall basketball hotshot this would be borderline incriminating but I literally don't care
you are the only person here qualified to have a basketball mansion
OMG PONY
my secret room would be completely empty except for a bolted safe. and that part is staying secret.
as someone in so cal who’s dated both a woman in the army and a man who went into the marines, I very much do have a “no dating people in the armed forces” policy and uh. especially marines.
A room devoted to completing Jigsaw puzzles. You know, multiple trays for sorting pieces, high tables so you could easily stand while solving, big tv as a second screen for semi-watching as you play. Easy ways to wrap, glue, and store completed puzzles. Special lighting. But, let's be real, as fun as it would make playing a jigsaw puzzle, all that at once would come across to a normal person as my personal room for "Dexter" auditions.
You refer to both jigsaw puzzles and Jigsaw puzzles. Those are very different things. Solving jigsaw puzzles involves connecting cardboard pieces to see a pastoral landscape. Solving Jigsaw puzzles involves connecting severed body parts to see who was mildly rude to John Kramer.
My secret room is an elaborate indoor playground for me to run around and climb things in
My secret room is a woodworking shop (it is ridiculously soundproofed). I spend every evening an weekend in there. I occasionally bring out a wooden toy for my children to fiddle with, or I drag out a gorgeous piece of handmade furniture for my wife to admire. My children and wife are also made out of wood.
Secret room, eh? Well, I actually DO have a secret room. Except it's not really a secret, but we'll pretend it is. I'm a hobbyist woodworker who specializes in making pens. I call it The Pen Den (not fiction: ThePenDenShop.etsy.com, if you need a fancy pen or something fun). It could certainly be made creepy - I have many tools and implements that, if the lighting was right and there was ominous music, could be very sinister indeed. And, you know, John Wick killed some guys with a pen, and so did Martin Blank, so there's that.
Is that VPD ™-baseballcap a hint? Are you bracing yourself for a The Originals ™ marathon?
Return to Me is on Tubi for free right now (April 2025)
My secret room is a second more secret bedroom so I can take naps without judgment. it would be so so so extremely cozy and dark and quite. Terrifyingly.
My secret room would be a Pokemon stadium, complete with holograms of the pokemon, pre recorded announcers, and a constantly cheering crowd sound effect that plays forever
I'd love to know if Jenny has seen French Kiss with meg ryan & kevin kline, it's my favorite romcom! also i'd be interested in her takes on When Harry met Sally if she's seen, maybe we can get another romance movie video someday :)
that military movie is so obviously just bootlicking it's insane
My secret room would be a recreation of a Roman bath house.
I think the obvious secret room is my astral witch room, where I have a beautiful prismatic glass observatory on top of my house and practice my star magic there. It’s not visible looking at the house from the outside because of a spell on the glass, and the reason it’s secret it because I can’t have anyone find out about my cool magic, or my neighbors would never leave me alone.
I'll dedicate my secret room to obvious stuff like Naruto AMVs or a silly hat collection. Then they won't suspect I have a secret, SECRET room with sick and twisted-type stuff for freakazoids.
This wouldn’t be my secret room, but the least creepy secret room I could think of is like if a loved one passed away, and in your grieving, you want to leave their room untouched, and then you don’t want to talk ab it bc it’s painful to talk ab the loss
Personally the only time I can stand cheating in a romantic movie is if it's set in the past and the couple we root for is a gay couple.
Now I'm curious. Why?
I actually did give a speech at my wedding. It was mainly ruthlessly ranking my bridesmaids in an internet-friendly numbered list.
The guy in Purple Hearts has a bunch of bad movies, i liked the hip hop violin dance one and the Harry Styles wattpad fanfic one
He’s also in a kind of goofy TV series about English royalty in I think the 16th century which I’m enjoying bc the premise is basically “dude’s conniving social-climbing mother pimps him out to bisexual king”
My rich person secret room would just contain a computer and all the Sims games, including the worst of the Sims 4 DLC. Nobody gets to know I spent money on that stuff.
If you ever get *really* rich, I hope you upgrade it to connect to a CCTV'ed housing development full of real people who get to live there for free, so long as they faithfully obey all of the Sims-style commands you can beam to them at any moment (or that are generated by the computer by default). Also, they may only read and speak Singlish.
I feel like I'd just go with a model train room. I feel like if you discover someone who is known to like trains has a secret train room the reaction would just be "oh, yeah, that tracks". If they don't like trains though? Terrifying. Also, a shoutout to one of my favorite romcom couples - Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger in Down With Love. They're one of those couples that requires you to buy in to the insanity of the world they live in, but holy cow do they have a great romance - complete with a three minute one-take monologue.
that tracks lol
Any update on the YouTube mirror? I can’t really watch things on Patreon
Same
My secret room would also be a fake outdoor area, but instead of a forest, it'd be a few different mini-biomes populated by those big, expensive pokemon plushes. Like, I'd have a little fake lake and have that huge Lapras plush in there, put the big Clodsire by the lake shore, and then the giant Snorlax plush on a fake grassland and so on. And I'd just go in there to either hug/flop on the plushies or indulge my lifelong fantasy of being a pokemon trainer.
I go back and forth between a forest populated by real creatures, like those beautiful life size hansa plush, or a pokemon forest. Perhaps it could be seasonal
Have you seen Palm Springs? I wonder how the main couple in that movie will fair.
My secret room would be the same as Jenny’s indoor forest but all real, not fake plants.
unrelated but I'm already looking forward to Jenny's review of the Disneyland 70th anniversary stuff a year from now lol (some of the merch is... questionable from what I've seen)
I’d definitely fill my secret room with weird puppets which is 100% scary and would freak anyone out, but I do think that’s better than my current arrangement (puppets just in my house in otherwise normal rooms)
Have you posted pics anywhere of your puppet roommates?
If Jenny discovered that a housemate's closely-guarded "secret room" was in fact her fantasy artificial indoor forest, would it still be a terrifying discovery? Has there ever been a romantic comedy involving two people who have identical secret rooms?
Oooh, how about two people who discover that their secret rooms are actually secretly connected to the other person’s secret rooms?
My secret room is where I invited the Charmin bears to sample my cask of Amontillado. And my toilet paper. I had to make it an offer they couldn’t refuse and I wasn’t sure if they were into wine.
okay funny story I made a youtube video about Purple Hearts a few years ago and it led to me getting in contact with the ghostwriter of the BOOK Purple Hearts was adapted from, which was actually the result of book packaging by ALLOY ENTERTAINMENT!!!! the author's real name is Lara Avery and she's actually very nice and cool. my impression is that the book is a little more nuanced and less 'conservative guy tames liberal shrew' vibes than the movie
RETURN TO ME MENTIONED !!!! have never met anyone else who's seen it!! i also had a lot of niche rom-coms in my upbringing. going to continue watching but return to me excited me so much i had to comment :-)
My secret room would just be an art room where I can draw and paint without anyone looking over my shoulder or commenting on half finished stuff. I really can’t think of anything else that wouldn’t be creepy as a secret room though…. This episode was a lot of fun!! I’m very curious about your Pokémon video, I loved the live Pokémon musical one :)
You've Got Mail was a huge part of my childhood. We had the soundtrack, and my parents told us if they ever played The Puppy Song in the car it meant we were on our way to get a dog (my dad was severely allergic). Years later on a "trip to visit grandma and grandpa" they played it, and the van went WILD. Came home with two standard poodle puppies, Merry and Pippin. ❤ Also Parker Posey's whiney "where are my tic tacs" is a common quote when we can't find something.
I wonder if that's what got her the part in White Lotus Season 3's "Where are my lorazepams?"
I just finished this and then my TV's home screen advertised The Prince & Me
You finally work up the courage to enter my secret room, after years of speculating on what I did with my basketball money and why I have been so insistently covert. Finally, curiosity has overtaken your terror, and you break the lock. To your confusion, it's simply... an empty room. There is a window, four walls, the door leading in, the carpeted floor, and nothing else; it is bare, save for a tape measure laying against one wall. Frustrated with me and annoyed, you prepare to chastise me for this prank, before measuring the floor out of boredom. The room, impossibly, extends two inches outside of the house's walls. This is not detectable from outside my basketball mansion. Somewhere, deep in the labyrinthine halls, things that should not have slammed are jamming. Am I coming home? Was I ever home?
anyway if any studio execs are Jenny fans the script for "House of LeaBron" is 50% done and I will let you put product placement in it if I can cast Danny DeVito as the female lead
holy shit the military gave him a medal for killing a buncha A-rab men, but put him in bad boy scammer jail for six months with no legs for loving one woman in like a slightly wrong way
"the hell does Jenny mean 'a british face?'" *clip comes on* "ohhhh this man caused the irish genocide and doesn't put salt on his beans on toast"
also omfg the positioning of "They realize that even though they don't like each other, they both have financial troubles and decide to have a sham marriage" makes it sound like Jenny means THE ARMY GUY AND THE DRUG DEALER which I would watch
Jenny saying she’s never known anyone to have a strong dating stance pro/anti army is so funny to me. I’m the child of two veterans and I never ever ever ever ever ever EVER would date a man in the military and strongly caution all women against it. I’m also from an area with a lot of military bases and I’ve known a lot of girls who are specifically seeking out men in the military (though I think this is a huge mistake and I don’t typically get along with those girls due to stark personality differences)
Is it 'cause they're usually pretty toxic guys? I imagine that being the case if someone actively wants to join the U.S. military for any reason besides "I literally can't afford to so any other job".
The thing that really struck me when I watched Runnaway Bride as an adult was how dangerous the whole situation was. This journalist is obsessed with her enough to write a hit piece on her and then loses his job bc of her letter to the editor. Then he stalks her, moves to her town and ingratiates himself with her friends and family and none of them are scared for her safety?? That one ex gives him naked photos of her??? Hello????
If I wrote for Netflix I would be constantly pitching remakes of highly-popular romcoms where all the terrible behavior from the originals has the kind of consequences it would actually have in real life. They would feature a lot of personal trauma and jail time.
I had no idea "Dreams" by the Cranberries was in You've Got Mail! I associate that song so strongly with Derry Girls, especially the ending montage in the finale, that it's weird to see it pop up in a frothy, turn-of-the-millennium Hollywood romcom. It's not even that profound of a song, in itself, but my brain permanently has it pigeonholed alongside "bittersweet memories of the Troubles in Northern Ireland".
My secret room would probably be just a large practice room for practicing Kpop choreographies bc theres nothing more embarassing than learning them in your own room and someone enters it while you're doing your silly little dances.
I think if I were to have a secret room, I'd initially be very lost on what I'd do with it. There's not really a lot of things I'd want to hide away in such a place but if I had to pick. Maybe I would just decorate my secret room to make it look like Bag End, or the Batcave or something. Just a one-to-one replica of a place from a movie or video game
Notting Hill is my nostalgic romcom that I always watched with my mum. I love it so much. <3 (Oh, and Julia Roberts' character is pregnant at the end of the film, so they'll have at least one child together.)
I know that this is facetious to a degree, but, according to available evidence, it is in fact not true that people who cheated and got together with the person they cheated with, they'll very likely cheat again. This is a myth not borne out by evidence we have on how people actually behave.
There are a lot of things that aren’t corroborated by hard research but are corroborated by consistent anecdotal evidence. Also it’s not like she’s doling out medical advice it’s just a common saying cautioning people against overlooking an agreed-upon unacceptable behavior.
san diegan here- we have hella military bases, specifically naval. marines train all over socal, and some of the aircraft carriers are based here!
It looks like thats where the movie takes place. There was even a bridge that said Oceanside.
When you accidentally said Remember Me I BURST out laughing because I was NOT expecting you to say that💀💀💀
and the CLIP omfg i didn't realize it was a POV shot from the PLANES
As a sidenote, there's a huge military presence in San Diego bc there are a lot of military bases here (don't ask me which ones. I, too, know nothing about the military) so it's not too surprising that it would take place in southern california. My sister has a strict no-military dating policy for that reason 😂
29 Palms has the largest Marine base in America, and it's close enough to San Diego for folks on leave to make a lasting impression.
I'm not subtle enough about most of my interests to have a secret room of them... if I had an elaborate model-train-esque table set-up for my Schleich models or a dollhouse scaled for my smaller Transformers toys, as two completely random examples, I would not be able to keep a lid on it. Every time someone new entered my home I'd be like, "Check out how I've arranged my plastic dinosaurs so the theropods are in a flock together," or "Right now in Decepticon Manor, Soundwave is doing the gardening while Starscream slacks off and drinks lemonade." That said, I do think my secret room would be some sort of personal reading nook, ideally very small and full of pillows, with very cozy lighting and maybe a stained glass skylight, themed to books or plants or something? The room would be angled such that you could read in the sunlight if you wanted or stay in a shaded area, and it would have amazing heating/cooling so it's never too hot or too cold. I feel like a specifically cozy-themed stained glass window would do a lot to make a space less creepy.
i think a secret room is always creepy (even the secret forest room, which would absolutely terrify me). therefore, i also think if you’re going to have a creepy secret room then it might as well be a sex dungeon because you should at least live up to the hype
"But the Grumplins very mean / To the Monchiichiis / Every day they tease / Try to catch and squeeze / So back up in the trees / Go the Monchiichiis... / 'Monchiichii' means 'Happiness'!" (HOPEFULLY those timeless words can bridge any illusory psychological gaps that may still exist between the concepts of "indoor plush forest" and "sex dungeon," and thus synthesize a shadowy space where everyone can disappear from view with joy.)
Not that it really matters, but I will point out that San diego is a place in southern california that actually does have a really high concentration of military people and I actually have heard the sentiment of not wanting to date them expressed in real life lol
North Florida where I’m from is the same (three huge bases all within an hour of one another) and I used to have “no military” in my dating app bios
I have a soft spot for two weeks notice because my mother told me the guy reminds her of my dad lol
Also this is a top-notch ramble, I know literally nothing about romcoms but was glued to the screen. Honestly still reeling about the plot of Runaway Bride, couldn't they have just made the main character call off a bunch of previous engagements instead? It would have made her seem 10x less unhinged, would keep the tension in the wedding scene ("she wouldn't call it off this late...right!?"), and would even let them preserve the title of "runaway bride"
My secret room (i.e. random corner of the basement) is filled with my brother's old gym equipment + a metric ton of Transformers toys: the former because I still convince myself that I'll use them one day, the latter because I already have shelves of Transformers and I don't want to reveal the depths my problem to my housemates
“These are my awards mother. From army”
the whole time she was recapping purple hearts I kept thinking about buster
in the fifth grade we had a house fire and we had to live in a rental for a few months while it was rebuilt and everything .... months into living in the rental we found a completely bare secret room in-between bedrooms. Super weird, had different flooring than the rest of the house, accessed by sliding back the back of the closet.
That's insane, was it a full-size room, or just like a crawlspace?
My snake room is absolutely real... only a secret from my neighbours though.
My secret room - I saw this picture once of an indoor pool that had a tiled bottom that looked like a fancy rug and I just so desperately want that in any form that that would be my secret room - though I guess someone else would have to know about it because there's no way I'm cleaning a pool because I have to spend all my time basketballing for money.
My secret room would probably be a storage room of shame: Furniture that I've outgrown and KNOW I should sell on Craigslist but can't be assed, impulsive amazon purchases I didn't return in time, clothes I'll never fit in again or looked SO CUTE in the store but now I can't find an appropriate occasion for them, etc. Nothing malicious, but if another human laid eyes on the horrifically large stockpile of obsolescence I may well wither away and die of embarrassment, so this door remains locked at all times, and only I may have the key. (I'm thinking a custom skeleton key with pretty engraving I can wear on a chain around my neck for maximum drama and aesthetic.)
I feel like an underrated romcom couple that’s gonna make it are Toula and Ian from My Big Fat Greek wedding. The sequels were atrocious but the first one is such lightning in a bottle. Ian is the sweetest guy, masculine but not toxic, never judges her background and embraces it. There’s not much conflict BECAUSE he’s so dang supportive, but it’s still a really great comfort watch.
I've been trying to finish a song im writing for months, and somehow youre yapping proved to be the perfect background for me to focus in and finish it
That army romcom made me think about how a lot of US american movies are funded by the US military. I wonder if that happened here as well and the US army thought that they need this PR in romcoms for some reason.
100% that's why I refuse to watch it lol
My boyfriend said his secret room would be a gift-wrapping room “because what else do I have to keep a secret?” Does that pass the non-creepy test?
I read this and wondered for several minutes what could be so eldritch about his gift wrapping technique that it needs to be secret, before realizing he probably just wants to keep the gift a surprise
“Let me show you my secret room,” I say, a twinkle in my eye. You follow, unsure, but your burning curiosity overtakes rational thought. I pull a key from a secret compartment inside my famous basketball player gym shorts. “This is the key to my success,” I say solemnly. You wait with bated breath as I turn the heavy lock. The door slowly swings open, revealing an empty room containing a single basketball with a smiley face drawn on it, Castaway-style. I smile, as it dawns on you that I have scammed the NBA, nay, the world. For the basketball was the true soldier, and I but a sham wife.
My secret room would almost certainly be a cozy library full of both books and too many legos. But also… it wouldn’t be fully secret.
I unwisely decided to take a shot every time Jenny said "army" and now I'm dead. (But seriously it became such a Sideshow Bob rake gag that it just kept getting funnier and funnier to me)
I'd argue "no military types" makes sense as a service worker for a business in close proximity to a military base, lol. Lots of dealing with grunts on their off hours.
Return to Me is a pet fav of mine from when I was a kid because Christian kids are allowed to watch it. It’s boring and also sad and sweet and also I like Bonnie Hunt in it 😂
My secret room would be wunderkammer of natural specimen collection! A lifetime of collecting bones, shells, terrariums full of healthy fat salamanders.. all in ambient warm light and with windows which look out into the garden. God willing!
it's genuinely so beautiful that this is the second time scamming the army for money has come up on jenny's patreon channel
I feel like the “reformed rake” trope in the modern day suffers bc the only way they know how to translate him to modern day it's just making him a “lovable misogynist”? Films then tries to “both sides” things except the writers are too cowardly to completely condemn the male lead. So there's this stank of “yeah, maybe what he's doing isn't great but also… isn't he kinda cool? Also WOMEN amiright?” Regarding the “no soldiers” I'm guessing it's probably the reason many people have a “no cops” rule. Little to no recourse in cases of DV with an extra danger of backlash from their “friends” should you try to leave or press charges. For the secret room. I was REALLY into the aesthetics of the Secret Garden when I was younger. I like the idea of a secret courtyard right in the center of the house? Forgetting all the logistics of maintaining a garden, I'd have a grand tree peeking over the roof as a bit of intrigue. There's the scent of flowers everywhere, but how? There are no flowers to be seen. I was thinking about multiple secret entrances as well out of the courtyard but I think that's getting too close into creepy The Boy territory.
I think that you could do a reformed rake nowadays by just making him a guy who likes sex, but respects women. Like a guy who sleeps around for fun and hasn't met anyone he wants to be really committed to. This also made me think that we need some romcoms that end in polyamory.
My secret room would be a bunch of fossils and rocks and dried plants and it would have an animatronic scientifically accurate dinosaur. I just realised I'm the old guy from Jurassic World 2
"Marry Me" with Jlo and Owen Wilson is the worst couple iv'e seen ever. Iv'e seen better chemistry in cartoons.
this is how I feel about 50 first dates
my secret room will be like the barbie 12 dancing princesses floor and it will be like magical ballet studio garden with a pond I can swim in and and and those cakes that bibble eats in mermaidia and and closet from life in the dream house and everytime I go to it I act all mysterious to where people think I'm some kind of vigilante. but it's just barbie room. idk something like that i guess.
I have a collection of furbies. Like different generations and different furby related products like happy meal toys, etc. Right now they’re all on shelves in my room. But historically, this has frightened men that I invite over. So, maybe it actually would make sense to have a secret room that I keep my furbies in. And I could even make little environments for them to live in.
For what it's worth, I'd be delighted if I entered into a woman's room and found shelves of furbies, that's a badass collection
I fully thought as you explained the plot to Return to Me that you were going to say the gorilla received the wife's heart and I was imagining the scenario where the husband fell in love with a gorilla.
I would collect all the props from that AI Willy Wonka experience thing and store them in my secret room
because im trans if my basketball husband had a secret room id be so pissed like i would be convinced he was cross dressing in there.
It's worse than you think...he's actually dressing up... ...as an NJ Nets super-fan!
my secret room would be a room designed to look like an environment from the horror video game SOMA (2015). probably with life-sized replicas of the monsters and characters and everything. and obviously a computer on which to play SOMA (you can do nothing else on this computer. it only has SOMA on it). this is the secret room where i play SOMA
Ok so I’m going to have to soundproof my secret room but it’d be fun to have a studio do practice singing, music, and other vocal stuff. 😂 I also don’t like working out in front of people so maybe I could squeeze a home gym in there.
my secret room would be storage for all the hobbies and crafts I've started and abandoned. it's a secret because I'm ashamed of my lack of follow-through, not for scary reasons
Just a room full of way too many kittens. With cat trees everywhere, cat shelves and cat beds screwed into all the walls from floor to ceiling. When you open the door, all the kittens turn to look at you, just cute kitten faces from every angle with too-big eyes staring directly into your soul.
My secret room is a secret broadway room, with a little stage and a kareoke machine set up so I can pretend I am on Broadway. And of course I keep it secret because my fatal flaw is that I am horrendously embarassed about most things I hold dear, as if some cartoon high school bully will tease me if I am discovered, and my husband will leave me, and my kids will think I'm lame (my kids already think I'm lame, tbf)
Idk if anyone has said this yet, but every time you talk about your forest room I think of Meow Wolf, Convergence Station. It’s not exactly what your looking for, but it has a very elaborate 3 story forest room with trees you can go into. No ball pit or squishy floors though unfortunately.
I think all the MW installations have indoor forests.
Secret basketball room, just to massively confuse anyone who sneaks in as to why I had to keep it a secret.
I think my secret room would just be a like a perfect bathroom. Shower has a towel heater (is that a thing? it will be), decked out potty that... I dunno, nobody else uses and is really good, cabinets are unobtrusive but roomy... I think that's it.
My dorm in college had a towel heater and it was the most magical thing I've ever experienced
Secret Room: the place where I murder people
I’ve given this a lot of thought, my secret room would be an indoor waterfall/nature area. I’d want a fully functioning waterfall with the ability to heat the water so that you can sit in it like a shower. There would also be real trees and plants surrounding the waterfall. Idk if it would be a secret though, I’d spend any and every free moment in that room.
I think my secret room would have like the Tardis Console in there... I wouldnt know what to do with it but just embarrassingly go in there and larp sometimes I guess... by myself
As a kid I loved loved swimming and imagined having this flooded mansion with a secret underwater tunnel you could swim through to get to some secret base or other. I would have absolutely drowned.
Off topic but what Stella Believix doll is that?
She's lovix! And I put gamer headphones from another set on her because they matched
I actually think a secret library would be the least creepy. Like it would be a bit ominous, and very mysterious, but because you know nothing too crazy is happening in a library, you'd probably just figure they were some super secret books, maybe some spells or something
as somebody who loves 27 dresses I love considering how bizarre the main character and the plot is if you reflect on it at all lmao
My secret room would be massive replicas of animals(NOT TAXIDERMY,) just like the ones you get in animal crossing. human-sized replicas of animals and cool bugs.
My secret room would be the promised ghost ship and five part Haunt from Evermore's pitch.
I wish Jenny kept listing different kinds of secret rooms, just countless kinds of rooms, and how they'd be scary if they were secret, and it just kept going until it the audio and what was happening on the screen slowly faded out and the video was abruptly over.
Excellent shoutout to Legally Blonde as having a convincing and healthy romantic relationship! I have seen nearly every romcom you discuss, so this was very fun and I appreciate the Watsonian criticsms. My more recent pet romcom is The Lost City. I don't know why I believe in the staying power of this Sandra Bullock / Channing Tatum combo, but by the end of the movie they got me good.
It would be a secret library. Not really a particularly special library with a fireplace and a some really soft reading chairs. Also a spot for my cat to sleep, there would also be a swinging latter à la beauty and the beast. It would be magical and also, I would not tell anyone of its existence. For me its a secret room where its a room that no one knows it exists not a room I tell people exists but they can't go in or know whats in it.
I was trying to think of something wholesome but it's impossible. My first thought was a room where I have painstakingly recreated my childhood bedroom with every toy and poster and so on in place. But then I thought, if someone found this they would just think, why does this creep have a child's bedroom hidden in the basement that I am told not to go into.
My favorite classic romcom is While You Were Sleeping, the premise of which is very offputting and bonkers but I just liked Sandra Bullock as a child.
My secret room would be a maze-like warren of endless construction like in that episode of Over The Garden Wall. Each new room would be decorated in some over the top style; baroque, dark academia, atomic futurism. The house looks like a normal house from the outside, so you're not even sure exactly where it goes but it does eventually butt into somebody else's house.
my secret room would be a replica of the former Fry's in my neighborhood. it was sci-fi themed and had three old cadillac type cars turned into seating for a faux drive-in theater. there were alien props and dope neon signage. all i want is to go back there and watch a B movie! but i'd share it with others and wouldn't keep it a secret!
My pet romcom is Moonstruck. In my mind Loretta and Ronny are gonna make it. :) And my secret room would be a recreation of Arrietty’s bedroom from the Studio Ghibli Borrowers movie! Oversized fake flowers everywhere!
I know most people hate 27 Dresses but it's My Romcom in the way Jenny says You've Got Mail is for her so it always makes me sad when other people don't like it
Secret library, because it would simultaneously feel like I'm a Cold War spy, a cool rebel punk, *and* a boy wizard with surreptitious access to the restricted section. Second answer, with mostly the same reasoning: pirate radio station studio. Surely I'm not the only one who remembers Radio Free Roscoe (or Pump Up The Jam, I guess). Both of these are good and cool secret rooms to have.
"Don't make me gun you man! With my gun!! I...have a gun."
I had a mandela effect moment because i used to love legally blonde and have watched it multiple times, and I specifically remembered the ending being empowering because it was about how she didn't need a man and instead it was her friendships with vivian and paulette that were emphasized as the important relationships in her life. I didn't remember "emmett" at all, or their love arc being a part of the movie. I guess it's been a long time since i've watched it and i misremembered the events, but it has an entirely different meaning for me with the ending being different. Maybe my memory changed to the ending i would have preferred...
You’re kind of right? There’s technically a small romance with Emmett but it only gets confirmed in text as a “where are they now” kind of thing after the movie ends. The musical adaptation makes emmet a much more important character and centers their romance more (I have mixed feelings about this)
Return to Me bugs me because the conflict is she doesn't think anyone should love her because she has the scars on her chest from the surgery (at least that was my prevailing memory of it!!)
Yeah can confirm a 'no military guys' dating policy is extremely normal if you live in a town near a military base/school, those guys can be fine on their own if you meet them out in the world but en masse they're freaks and should be avoided at all costs
Also San Diego has a lot of marines because it's one of the big navy bases. And it looks like the movie is set near there.
My secret room would be a perfect recreation of the Baily Bugle office from 2001's Spider-Man. Right at the entrance is a closet with a suit, tie, fake mustache and cigar so that I can pretend to be J. Jonah Jameson. Also because this is my fantasy secret room I have Tobey Maguire on retainer to play Peter Parker. He doesn't want to be there but the money is too good to pass up. "Bring me pictures of SPIDER-MAN!" I would scream into the night as my live in girlfriend wonders where I've gone.
Just waiting for the YT link, because Patreon video refuses to work
The Littlefoot's Grandpa bit killed me
Is the you-tube link still down? I prefer to watch on there
I would like to change my answer, my secret room would be a map room, where the floor is a detailed map of the local region my home is in, and there's wall-to-wall shelving with more maps on one side of the room, and then like framed maps and hanging tapestry maps of all sorts of places in the world, and there's a bookshelf that's just a big collection of atlases in there too. I think that would come across as simultaneously whimsical and terrifying, and also i like maps in real life so now i want that unironically.
I so agree about legally blonde! Also love how her name is Elle Woods and his is Emmett Forrest. I think stuff like that is cute
Oh cute I never noticed that!
It’s so funny to me that the issue with 27 dresses was her and not the mess they gave her as a male lead 😭
“You’ve Got Mail” is an updated version of “The Shop Around the Corner”, a 1940 Jimmy Stewart -Margaret Sullavan rom-com. This is why it feels, as Jenny said, “older than it is”. And, yes, I am fully onboard with Hanks as a Stewart stand-in. It is a compliment to T.H. that you can swap him in for Stewart and hardly notice
It's funny, because I love Ernst Lubitsch and James Stewart but Shop Around the Corner never quite works for me. I think it's that Margaret Sullivan's character doesn't click- I'm not sure if it's how she's written, or if she's not gelling with Stewart (I think he definitely sells his attraction to her at least) or if it's that she's acting the character as very fluttery and above it all in a way that comes off as annoying to me. Mostly it's her voice being very falsetto and trilly when she's being snide- I'd rather she just bark back like Carole Lombard in To Be or Not to Be or Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday. There's something very cozy about the setting and some of the side characters that makes me want to see an alternate universe version where all the pieces click. It's the rare movie I'd be down to see remade as a period piece.
My Secret Room: a mechanical bull room where I practice riding a mechanical bull away from prying eyes until I get good enough that I feel confident that I can faultlessly do it in public
Motion for Jenny to explore terribly blatantly Right Wing versions of common media genres (comedy, romcom, drama, horror). Bonus if it is hyper Christian propaganda
motion seconded
My secret room would be a Chuck E Cheese. Cute and wholesome until you think of randomly happening upon lifeless animatronics in the a cold and sterile mansions ( i presume as a famous basketball played I'd have the same generically bland but extraordinarily bland mansions most famous people have)
Rom com cheating is such a pet peeve for me! It’s not ok no matter how lame the current partner is. It’s not romantically gratifying to watch someone cheat rather than dumping their partner
All I can think is the writers assume the viewers are pretending it's them in the movie, and are accounting for the fact that many of them might not all be single. Like, "Even if you have a boyfriend, it's not too late for you to live this fantasy. We'll take care of him..."
Jenny, please make a full video on The Prince and Me
Jenny — I want to reassure you— it is not just you and your family who love You’ve Got Mail! I introduced it to my daughter in her mid teens (she is 23) and we watch it as a family all the time. Big Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan fans!! (I’m only 8min into your video, sorry, but have you seen Joe vs the Volcano ? Very quirky but such a good movie.)
My secret room would be a Lego room. My Lego studio would be in the house proper, but every time I finished something I'd bring it to the Lego room. I'd aim to make it like my own little Legoland, covered completely with intricate Lego creations. I'd even pump in the soundtrack from Legoland and, if I really have all the time in the world, maybe even build myself a little dakride.
What if your whole house was secretly built of Lego?! Is that spooky?
My "secret room" would realistically be more of a "panic room" for my "crippling anxiety"... But if I could have anything, I would like a Mary Poppin's bag situation so that as a 30-something in a nightmare economy I can finally have both material posessions and a tidy living space. The dream.
It’s hard to choose a secret room— a lot of private room ideas, but what room would I feel needs to be secret? Maybe a giant Calico Critter collection— like a whole world for them.
lol oceanside CA definitely has a high incidence of army guys . my friend moved there and every single person she's met is either army guy or army wife or army worker
That's true for anywhere right next to a military base.
You’ve Got Mail feels old not just because it’s from the 90’s but also because it’s a remake of like 3 other movies from the 1940’s
My secret room would be my secret dinosaur collection (if not for the moral problems of keeping a private collection) so maybe only replicas and molds.
My secret room would be a murder room. I know, I know, I'm basic. But, like... A nice murder room, ya know? Artisanal. Tasteful.
Like with vintage fixtures and chutes reclaimed from H. H. Holmes' Chicago-World's-Fair hotel?
i would keep a secret room dedicated to the hangnails i peel off and dedicated to the process of doing that so i can pick at my fingers in peace.
I feel that an indoor forest room would be like something Jenny could fully realize slowly over time. Like probably not that you could climb satisyingly. But one can build the framework for a plush tree with just 2x4s from Home Depot. And I've seen enough videos where people do upholstery to know that it's mostly done with a staple gun...so like wrap the 2x4s in quilt batting and foam, and then cover them in brown minky fabric using a staple gun...and they sell rugs that look like a moss forest floor! One of my buddies has a real big one in his bedroom. I feel this is an attainable goal, and I just want to mak a whole plan of how to do it. Theres this lady on tiktok that makes fun chandeliers in this same vein, and i'm always like "a cloud chandelier would be perfect for the indoor forest." Some handtools and a dream. Now I want an indoor forest room. My crafting audacity says it can be done.
I have a friend who crafts giant foam animals. Like a life-size raptor bursting out of a wall, and stuff like that for his wife's classroom. She's a middle school science teacher. And like he just does it for love of the game in his garage. I feel like plush trees are less technically difficult that a foam raptor. I want a series of videos where Jenny just attempts to make the indoor forest of her dreams.
This being released the day after I saw Heart Eyes feels appropriate
I guess it's ok if you hide people from the government in there, I'd be like: I get it, that had to be a secret
Also, in a very boring fashion, my secret room would be a gamer room with Pokémon plushies, a TV to play the switch, a gaming pc (with also writing softwares) and stuff like that. And for the record, if I was in a relationship with an uber rich basketball player, I would be creeped out to discover that the "super secret forbidden room" is just a gamer room.
I expected the Purple Hearts snippets to have those cringe "own the libs" humor, but the whole dinner scene got me so genuinely shell shocked (pun intended) I gasped.
Japan secret room, you can only speak Japanese inside although it's just me talking to myself. Gachapons, claw machines, little toriis, cherry blossoms and red leaves made from paper, 7/11 food of plastic
Omg I'm loving that Charjabug plushie
My secret room would be filled with wall to wall pictures and fan art of the couple from Purple Hearts
I always get Made of Honor confused with Sleeping With Other People. I think I saw them each once when they came out and neither stuck with me much. Also I don't think I realized Patrick Dempsey made so many movies, he's got three appearances on this list?
My mom loves romcoms, so Patrick Dempsey was one of the only actors who's name I knew as a kid. Even now, when I think of "generic hot guy" Patrick Dempsey is the first thing that comes to mind 🤣
My secret room would either be a Bionicle/Transformers/whatever other action figures I wanted to show off or play with room, or a custom video game space with a giant TV. I would want to copy the blockbuster idea for that
14:41 Haha I just watched one of those
Oh, I'm excited to watch this -- I just saw Something Borrowed for the first time, and they're all on my Worst Characters and Worst Couples list
As someone who has lived in both Oahu and San Diego, I too have a no military bf policy lol (I also have cousins in the military that advised me to have this policy so please don’t come for me)
You've Got Mail has one of the best insults I've ever heard. "I love Patricia. I love Patricia! Patricia. Makes. Coffee. Nervous."
Omg that is the BEST line. I love Patricia. “Ugh where are my tic tacs!”
I was so sure Jenny’s secret room would be a full-on My Little Pony shrine/museum completely staffed and filled with the rarest items and a mini rollercoaster. I guess the foam forest tracks too. My secret room would be painted by that doodle guy that doodles on everything and it would look a lot like his doodled house, except I would include a table and some chairs with a harsh lamp on the side. My own doodled insanity-inducing interrogation room.
I thought in 27 Dresses she was a for-pay bridesmaid?? Is she not??? That’s so crazy lol!
my secret room would probably be some kind of sewing/ craft closet which has the potential to be a creepy killer room, but i asked my fiancé and he said he would make his own sensory deprivation float tank room which is might higher serial killer potential imo
Return To Me is so special to me! I do love that it's just a boring, uncomplicated, slice-of-life narrative, and the supporting cast gets to shine. I feel like we fall in love with the characters because the people in their lives love them, and we get to see it. It's such s comfort movie.
My room would be the imaginarium from Community
My secret room would be items denoting how much I actually hate basketball but only do so because it makes me enough money to have a secret "I Hate Basketball" room.
Double Proxy marriage is legal in Montana for residents and active duty military. As someone who worked in the Montana Vital Records Office for a couple of years I had to enter marriage certificate data into our database and I can confirm that we got dozens/hundreds of marriages per month from usually very young military people who were located halfway around the world from each other. It was hard not to believe that the incentives provided by the military did not play a significant factor when you see a 19 year old in Germany marry a 18 year old in San Diego.
lmao the scene from the Army movie was awful, "yeah if my friend wasn't an awful racist psychopath you'd be getting raped by the Taliban RIGHT NOW, checkmate lib." Also I know in my heart they cast a black guy in the dickhead role specifically to deflect accusations of racism.
As a long-time God Awful Movies listener, I can say that it's a pretty reliable guess that a conservative movie will have a singular Black person in it for exactly that reason. Like, a lot of the time, they'll have the Black person say "[conservative issue, like not wanting to wear masks] is just like slavery!"
Return To Me is maybe the only rom com I truly like. 🩷
I had to log in just to comment how much I love Return to Me XD
I want that pony in the background omg so cute
British artist Florence Welch actually did have a pro US army opening act when I saw her.
Jenny, did you hear, Evermore just got bought by Disney? It's going to be opening soon! What's the date today??
I heard Disney will replace Dreamfinder and Figment with Eric Idle! Oh wait. I heard Disney will spend a fortune on a Star Wars attraction then turn it into an office building! Oh wait. Disney doesn’t celebrate April Fool’s Day on one particular day. It’s been every day for the last thirty years of their corporate history.
I’ve seen You’ve Got Mail so many times and I feel like most people who criticise it completely ignore that at the beginning Kathleen is expressing dissatisfaction with her life (‘what is it that I…do exactly?’), and while that doesn’t justify her shop closing it’s not like Joe Fox destroyed her whole life. Also I work in a bookshop and believe that I am Kathleen Kelly so
My secret room would probably be essentially a Godzilla shrine. Merchandise and memorabilia, all the movies, every book & comic, etc. etc. Probably a big TV with surround sound.
When you were talking about Return to Me, I genuinely thought you were gonna say the wife's heart is somehow transplanted into a gorilla and she is reincarnated as the gorilla
I also thought this.
I want to say my secret room would be some type of animal room, probably a sanctuary for an orangutan family where extreme circumstances somehow makes it ethically fine, like they're sick or disabled and couldn't be rehabilitated to the wild and also they were bullied by the other apes and the zoo or whatever was going to put them down. That way, the fact that it's illegal also warrants it being a secret room. The room is obviously very big and have a hidden outdoors area because it's on a roof. I'm sure this would still be terrifying to Jenny since she doesn
When I was a kid, this was my plan for a secret room: its actually in the house next door, which I also own, but you can only get to it through a tunnel in my house. And you have to swim through the tunnel. And when you emerge from the water, its into a model city that scales well with most toys, but also you can just go full Godzilla if you so choose.
Thanks for the ramble, Jenny!! You unearthed a memory of being made to watch Kate and Leopold by friends at uni and finding it completely baffling basically for the reasons you mention. I'm so torn about my secret room but I feel like it would end up being a perfect 1:1 replica of some part of Minas Tirith (from the Jackson films) but with, like, a big area for building Lego. And that combo DOES kind of sound oddly creepy even before you make it secret. Someone opens the door and I'm just sat there on the Steward's throne with a Lego AT-AT on my lap.
Would you eat various foods in a really gross manner a la Denethor?
I believe you have mentioned the plush forest fantasy before. It sounds familiar anyway.
She has! In one of her earlier vids, I'm just now catching up on her backlog - I don't remember which one tho
I just want to recommend The Baxter, a great twist on the Groom left at the alter trope with a wonderful cast. Quirky and sweet.
27 dresses and Run Away Bride could be combined into a great movie about a woman who only loves weddings and runs at the alter. Can have a whole montage of her doing different styles of weddings all to collect wedding dresses like Thanos collecting infinity stones
So it's about my cousin.
My secret room would just be a windowless fully padded room with a shit tonne of blankets and pillows where I can just lay down and relax and read and sleep. And the lights are adjustable from full brightness to complete, true darkness. Yes, I want a comic book asylum room. Yes I know how that sounds. Yes I still really want one x
I was listening to this with my eyes closed and thought the drug dealer character at 1:04:42 was Jensen Ackles
"Enchanted" is the rare romcom that has a sequel so we actually know how that worked out. Also, last year I was involved in editing an extended version of the movie featuring Idina Menzel's cut song.
I would have a room in the west wing, a private study with an enchanted mirror and a single enchanted rose, to which my fate is bound. Also a complete DVD set of "The West Wing."
why are you twirling, meg ryan? stop your twirling! >:(
R.I.P L. J. Smith :( Plush Chao garden secret room. While I think the SA2 garden is cooler, the SA1 garden is more practical to make into a secret room.
Yuck, YouTube
Gross, her main platform...
I always have problems with you got mail. It’s loosely based on the 1940 movie The Shop Around The Corner. But in that they are co workers at the same shop who clash heads but are sending each other letters on the back of a classified ad. It’s a lot more about the shop that’s filled with other characters and story arcs than it is about the letters. Whereas I think you got mail is too much about the email and not enough about the shops. It would be truly devastating to Meg Ryan that book shop shutting. But she kind of shrugs it off.
My secret room is LEGO. What makes it even creepier is elsewhere in the mansion I have a non secret LEGO room. What makes the LEGO in the secret room so secret? I can't tell you, it's a secret.
Secret room: my own pizza restaurant with a working replica of the Rockafire Explosion
My secret room would be like Barbra Streisands mall but the shops would be a 1990s uk Woolworths with a pick and mix and lots of c d singles, an old fashioned model shop selling air fix models of planes and ships and a 1960s Greenwich village coffee shop with fake unfiltered cigarette smell.
Jenny hasn't seen Doctor Who, in previous video. Jenny reviews The Runaway Bride, in this video. The irony. I've always wanted to see deleted scenes from You've Got Mail. They shot a lot of stuff, including Meg getting sexually harassed by Michael Palin. Some reviewer stated that Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan's current romantic partners were "easily sloughed off" here, like a layer of dead snake skin. That's always stuck with me.
My secret room would be just a normal room full of pictures of other rooms...other secret rooms. And shelves full of VHS tapes and DVDs. And if you play them in the sole flat screen in the middle of the room, it would be footage of other rooms. Other secret rooms. Every single secret room ever build. And NO, you would never knew or figure out how I came into posession of that footage or the pictures on the wall. How I entered every single secret room in the world. It's my secret.
i would have a full Ultraman style city miniature to stomp and make kaiju noises in when I'm stressed. I dunno if i'd be able to keep it secret though. I'd probably get the local youth to playfight in it and record it and upload it to youtube anonymously and everybody would be wondering where this mysterious handmade tokusatsu comes from....
*Excellent* choice.
i think my secret room would be some kind of like... basement cafe set-up. a cute table or two, a full espresso bar, maybe some fake windows with screens emulating "rainy day city street views" or something. i really enjoyed being a barista for a bit and wish i could have a nice espresso machine to play with, so in the spirit of the prompt, may as well go all out with it.
My secret room would be empty except for a 500 gallon aquarium with a single aquatic snail living in it. No other fish, barely any rocks and plants and shit, just an aquarium snail.
This makes me think of the Snail Assassin/Immortal Snail thought experiment, in which you get to be basically immortal but you can be killed only if one particular also immortal snail manages to touch you. You can live wherever you want but it will always be coming for you, albeit very slowly. You can't stay in the same place forever. You almost never have to actually worry about it. But at the same time you will never be truly safe. Your secret room sounds like you've decided to take matters into your own hands and trap the snail so you know where it is at all times. It also makes sense that you'd keep it a secret, because your enemies would have the perfect weapon and also how embarrassing would it be to explain to someone that you're not fully immortal because of a SNAIL? This way you can keep an eye on your only threat until one day an earthquake loosens the screws to the aquarium and cage walls or something and it slips into your bedroom while you're sleeping...
The doorway to my secret room will be small enough that you have to crawl in on all fours. When you enter, what you'll find is a Smithsonian museum-esque exhibit of artifacts, replicas, and creatures that are unrecognizable from any of the kind you'll ever see in real life. A lot of what you read on the placards will be devoid of any context and will leave you with an ominous feeling. Once you already feel like you're in a dream and think it's time for you to leave, you notice another small doorway in the righthand corner of the room. Upon crawling into this new doorway, you find yourself facing a tall, ornate crystal with a light bright enough to light the entire room. Engraved on the crystal will be the words, "You can always light up the dark!"
You should go to the Museum of Jurassic Technology
My secret room would be a karaoke room with a full stage complete with extending catwalk and a mini arena setup, like maybe only about 30-40 seats but still in multiple tiers, fully operational lighting, a concession stand and merch booth, etc.
"You've Got Mail" was my comfort movie, I've seen it so many times. Problematic fave. ;)
First thing I thought of for secret room, because I was still watching your video was black market animatronics, the center piece being buzzy. But honestly it would probably be a room of lego sets that I love building but would feel childish having displayed, like I would feel embarrassed that I was wasting my time on that
For legal purposes we actually have no idea which kinds of sports players could have buzzy
I also want the plush forest, I am so 100% sold on that; but my secret room would be an indoor forest but also with an integrated real large swimming pool, and there would be a hidden invisible closet where I keep my elf ears and mermaid tails and whimsical time period agnostic fantasy clothes
The thing that makes the wedding planner work is it being framed from her pov. The initial attraction when she thinks he's single. The fighting it every step of the way after she finds out he's not. She said I will not be cheating and you need to get yourself together.
Why did he make the same noise as the dinosaur 😂
If you dislike Matthew McConaughey as a romantic lead and hate the reformed rake trope you should check out Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. It’s a mess.
With Purple Hearts, it seems like she probably turns into a pop star because becoming a big commercial success is one of the ways the left gains any respect from the right, because you are valid if you can make money. Which is hilarious that the sham marriage is still a plot point after her monetary success when it's like, if their marriage was a sham for money still, then why didn't she just grab that bag and get gone after achieving stardom? And ALSO, how many army marriages would survive a formal sham investigation?? Kinda sounds like the plot of Gone Girl, tbh. Like, no, technically you didn't kill your wife, technically your marriage isn't a sham, but you're such a crap husband, we believe you could've and it could be!
finally representation for "made of honour" haters. I despise that movie. And I married my male best friend!
Oh gosh I HATED "How to lose a guy in 10 days" because the movie tries to give the lady the moral high ground because the guy made a bet about dating someone, yet she purposefully sabotaged and PUBLISHED what she'd done at his expense! No one gets a pass in that horrible, horrible story
I grew up watching “you’ve got mail” sooooo many times with my mom that I also feel like its importance/notoriety is overly inflated in my minds eye too. also, if your nora ephron hat is the “a film by nora ephron” super yaki one, I have the sweatshirt version. s-tier merch
The secret room discussion unlocked a memory of my wife telling me about how when her family moved into her childhood home and started fixing it up, her father deliberately put in secret doors in the backs of closets to make i think two separate secret rooms? I remember being completely bamboozled by this and her just being like "yeah it was kinda weird. Whatever." And not understanding why I was so interested in what were inside the rooms or why her father would single handedly diy two plaster walls in his house while also raising two small children and working multiple jobs. Apparently everyone else knew about the doors and used those rooms like they were normal rooms but I am still a little bit shocked by this and it's been ten years. Also, since then her family have lived in like four large houses and never has he built another secret room. I guess two was enough. Or maybe I'm just not let in on the secret....
Sean Baker totally took inspiration from The Prince and I when writing Mark Eydelshteyn's character from Anora.
I love Two Weeks' Notice, because it takes all that Hugh Grant quippy smarminess and makes it work for the character. Lucy's entire job is to manage all of his nonsense and find the sincerity in it, while also having her own nonsense that he needs to sift through. Also I am a complete sucker for that little moment where they're having lunch together and silently trading the bits of food they don't like; that alone sold me on their level of comfort and familiarity with each other.
The one about the playboy prince running away to Wisconsin sent me into orbit as someone who was born and raised in Wisconsin. Why did the writers think “hmm a place where girls do risqué things” and thought of Wisconsin of all places is just very funny to me
lmfao fr uw partying is crazy but not that crazy
My secret room would just be an extended version of my actual room, so just like mountains of sanrio plushies, dolls and yaoi.
Just saying, the last person I heard about having a secret room that they didn’t want their partner to see was Bluebeard.
Gonna start calling all my dust-induced sneezing fits 'Meg Ryan's Revenge' from now on, thanks Jenny!
IM SO HAPPY SOMEONE ELSE LOVES YOUVE GOT MAIL!!!!!! You've got Mail was always so special to my family - it was the movie my mom saw almost every day when she was pregnant, I watched it almost every other day growing up, I can practically quote it verbatim and im so happy someone else knows about it that makes me so happy!!!!!!!! :))))))))
My secret room: wrap-around, multi-level Playmobil dioramas with all the fantasy sets. Maybe the Old West too. Oh, and dinosaurs! Basically, all the best sets and not the ones that are just sports cars or whatever.
Oh, he's the guy who plays the quarterback in Bottoms. Yeah, I see it.
LOVE the frilly frocks plush, i had her and her little house when i was a kid!
My secret room: A fiber art studio with equipment for dying fiber and spinning it, but it's fashioned to look like an old alchemy lab.
Purple Hearts is so nightmarish; no character was written to be capable of empathy
My house actually has a secret room, which is sufficiently secret that no one has been it since the early 2000s. Namely, we have an attic, only accessible by a fairly tenuous ladder that has to be positioned right above the stairs, onto which it might very well decide to fall. Between this and my parents' age/my desire not to fall into the trap the ladder spirit set all those years ago, no one has been up there since about 2001. We think it may contain squirrels, or possibly things that have evolved from squirrels. I can see into it through the hole in my bedroom ceiling I can see from my bed, and I am awaiting the day I look up and something looks back.
For Purple Hearts, I'm pretty sure that you don't have to be "in love" to get married. Like, there's no legal requirement at all around how "real" the marriage is... It's just a legal contract. Like, they could live in different houses and never see each other and the marriage is still legally valid. I don't know why they're so worried about it lol
My secret room would low-key be the portals to different holidays from The Nightmare Before Christmas .
I don't know anything about Snorri but I find his design so charming that I spent half this video just staring at him on that blue thing next to you like ":D"
I love You've Got Mail. I redrew the "Shop Around The Corner" sign and printed a copy for my wall.
Your inability to differentiate between branches of the military is a) an extremely funny bit I’m jealous of, and 2) totally justified given that in that clip they turn out to be marines, by far the most confusing of the branches.
