If you like twisted, deadly games, check out Alice in Borderland.
sorry for commenting on a super old upload But, about 20~ minutes in you mention there being not really much rep for genuinely cute horror guys- check out Benny Loves You if you haven't, he kind of fills that niche of guy who's meant to be cute filling the role of mascot (in like an elmo way sort of) (also you've probably already seen these but sanrio likes doing collabs with chucky now and there are cute little chucky-hello kitty's running around, I want one so bad)
Night Swim's "Marco? YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO SAY POLO!" is simultaneously best and worst of 2024
The part about people freaking out and hyper-overreacting to minor, innocuous things in a completely unpredictable way gave me the heebie jeebies. It brought up some memories of dealing with people like that. I really hate that. I guess a paywall isn't enough to create a chill zone. I wish there were some established way to create chill zones on the Internet. My first thought is comically Draconian, to give everyone psych evals, lol. I don't know the solution, but I feel unfiltered interactions with strangers on the Internet could, in sufficient quantity, make me go completely insane. I want access to the chill zone.
Just loved this. That's all.
Alyssa Grenfell did a video about that film you mentioned, Heretic, from the perspective of a former Mormon and Mormon missionary. She does awesome former-Mormon content, sometimes about the deep doctrine of the faith and sometimes just about *being* Mormon. Highly recommended. https://youtu.be/j5wpy7ZGfK4?si=CjmDziWUpxhGBzBz "... of which I have two." Yes! That is the proper way to use a preposition!
The Crush 1993 w alicia silverstone and cary elwes had the same underage girl tries to seduce grown man plot and it wasn't even trying to stay at all hinged, like she attacks his adult love interest with bees. Potentially an even darker example as allegedly it was based on the writer-director's interactions with a real teen girl that he named the lead character after, who successfully sued to have her name taken out of the film so it had to be dubbed out.
Reminds me of that song by The Police. Don't Stand So Close to Me.
Hi Jenny, my husband and I have been binge-watching all your videos, as these have become our new special interest, as ND artists & college professors from LA who now live in Paris. We’re on the part of this video where you talk about cutting a recording you made containing an unpopular opinion. We are so sad you had to do that. We are so sorry. We have always told our students, many of whom now help make the films we all watch, that their unique perspective is what will make them money that nothing can take away from them. And I want to share with you that we value your perspective & that that perspective is what you contribute to the universe & what people should value. Criticism and stupid comments are certainly a cost for this life of full access for everyone in this current age. I think you’re handling it well. I hope you’ll grow to become more bold with your perspective. We hope you are surrounded by and regularly supported by trusted friends and family who encourage you to contribute your beautiful view into this dreary world. I’m sorry for all these words. Sending lots of love!
Amy Fancast: Ashley Tisdale. she's got years of voice acting experience on Phineas and Ferb, she would certainly be in budget, and I just think her voice would match very well
I want to say, I can be someone who struggles with differing opinions (especially if it’s about something I love) and can take things very personally (I think it’s an autism thing maybe??) but I don’t want to be this way and I want to get better so like hearing your opinions (which I love !) and learning to digest them is actually helping me improve and hopefully change this way of thinking ☺️
Eyyy same here! It took me like a year to work up to watching HBomerGuy's video on Sherlock and I ended up having my mind changed about the show by the end! I think autism is part of it, we do tend to have media or items have a lot of personal meaning in our lives, especially if we have trouble connecting with people IRL. Though I find a lot of neurotypical people have the same reactions when you dislike things they love, so I think it's mostly just a human thing
My favourite part in Imaginary was when the therapist tried to rationalise the daughter's relationship with the evil imaginary bear-friend as her dabbling with ventriloquism; which would've been an even scarier twist than no-bear!
This teddy bear horror twist has been stuck in my brain since Jenny recounted the scene to us and it's still so scary to me. It's funny that Jenny sees it as an unscary twist but to me it's something that would immediately make the movie a lot more terrifying! The way it instantly changes the plot from "my daughter has a haunted teddy bear" to "the teddy bear isn't even a physical object but has invaded MY MIND AS WELL, I CAN'T TRUST MY OWN PERCEPTION OF REALITY" creeps me out just thinking about. I think this movie would be TOO scary for me! Which is a shame because clearly it was made for me if I'm the type of person who finds that twist terrifying.
(me dusting off my hands) Oh, there's no bear. Problem took care of itself
I know I'm late to this, but my "train" moment was Pan's Labyrinth where the bad guy takes the butt of his gun to the face of the young guy while his father begs and pleads on his knees to spare him. I genuinely had to rush up and out of the room when that happened, and was shaken about it for days afterwards. I still can't recall it without feeling queasy. There was something about it that was just too real, too viseral. In horror movies, I just kinda detach myself mentally in some ways from what is shown on screen, but I think the weird, fantastical plot drew me in and forced me to suspend my disbelief, so when that scene happened, all my usual mental shields had been peeled away and it hit me like a truck.
In that case, yeah, intended and reasonable reaction, not because it was a “horror film” but because that’s the scene that really contextualizes the villainy of Pan’s Labyrinth: not mystical beasts from out of time, but the fascist Franco Regime, who genuinely did brutalize and murder people like that from their alliance with the Nazis during the Spanish Civil War all the way until their defeat in the 1970s. Living as an immigrant in Galicia (north of Portugal, you could call it ‘northern Spain’ but that’s simplistic) really made the movie take on new dimensions. This was a fascist government that was around and dominant in my parents’ lifetime, while the US was landing on the moon and the world pretended “Hitler’s dead, war is over, yay!” Just an amazing feat that del Toro made it as good as it was, especially since he isn’t even Spanish (he’s Mexican!) But terrifying for ALL ages…
love you jenny nicholson. please dont go bald
Love you Jenny but not in a weird way
You’re a human. It’s not kind for a viewer to put you on a pedestal because you don’t deserve that kind of pressure. It’s impossible. You’re great as you are, strong and mid opinions and all.
I hate that you have to deal with stupid people acting so rude to you. I could never be a public figure like you are, it takes so much courage and fortitude. I’m so sorry they wanted to try to tear you down. I love your opinions, you are so smart and so interesting, your videos are a delight to consume even if you hate a movie I like and Vice versus. You’re so articulate. And to alleviate pressure, you’re also free to have days where you’re not that articulate, these are “ramble videos” after all. Honestly, we’re here to listen to you chat about what you are passionate about, whatever it is. People are CRAZY.
You are also like one of the most thoughtful creators on the platform so people having beef with you is genuinely puzzling.
6:26 I got distracted and stopped listening for a few minutes and thought you were still talking about Night Swim. I thought you were saying the pool was the temptress succubus of the story getting in between the baseball player and his wife. Something about that is a funny image to me
Your makeup is so nice and your hat and hair is SO CUTE 😭🩷
Agreed she’s the cutest pumpkin in the patch. Making me wish it was January!!
I had a real-life recoil moment--technically a dodge--during a 1970s martial arts movie. I can't remember the movie title, let's say Five Fingers of Death as a placeholder. Anyway, there was a scene where a fighter throws a spear directly at the camera. I reacted by dodging to the side! I hope I wasn't the only person in the theater that reacted that way, but I don't know.
In the future, can chapter markers be added to videos like this? That would help if there was one movie or TV show review I wanted to skip to avoid spoilers.
The fact that anyone would watch you and want anything other than your true thoughts and ideas about whatever subject it is you’re discussing, agree or disagree, just baffles me. Like, I thought that was the whole point? So sorry you’re being treated that way. I simply enjoy the way you explain and discuss things, regardless my personal view. People need to chill for real.
I agree!
I forgot how good at voice acting Jenny is until she whipped out the Amy impression
What! I've never commented on here, but I thought that Mean Girls video was so funny. Your tone was jokey to me. If I wanted to hear a completely uncritical recap of the film I think there are lot of places I could have gone. Your observations pick up stuff that never occurs to me in movies I don't usually watch. The internet always directs the negative first.
Ugh, the issue with not being able to state even mid opinions is so real. We were hosting an in-game fashion show in an MMO, literally pixels on a screen, and we invited this content creator who isn't huge in youtube terms, but she's big in this game, to be a guest judge. She needed to make sure her judging scores would be secret, because she was afraid of backlash, she couldn't join the voice call because there's people who follow her around into any public voice channel and try to get her banned from twitch or just ruin her experience, she saw someone on our discord who misgendered her on purpose a while ago so she didn't feel comfy there and also didn't want us to do anything about it because it was in the past, so if we took action against that person now she was afraid people would see her as vindictive... it's just walking on eggshells, constantly having to be careful, never misstepping or it's clipped and used against you... It's tough, and it sucks, sorry you have to deal with it Jenny!
trap is such a fascinating movie to me. I loved watching it, I will probably never watch it again unless it’s in a theater with tons of other people. it WOULD NOT END but I was never actually bored. I think it’s my favorite movie of all time maybe? but I’m never mad if someone says they hate it bc I think I also hate it. I don’t know!
I know this is the least of the sins of that Miller's Girl movie, but, like, why was Martin Freeman doing the accent!! Do they not know that English people can live in Tennessee?
had a one month sub in december and i am fucking OVERJOYED to see these vids again dear god
It's wild to me that people get so mad about your opinions. Personally, there are times where I think I know what you will think about something and then your opinion is wildly different and I'm just laughing on the inside. LET JENNY HATE THINGS IN PEACE
A film scene that got a strong physical reaction from me was actually from an old movie made in the 1920s called “The Crowd.” The main characters toddler girl was crossing the street and a car that seemed relegated in the background swiftly drove closer and closer until, at the last moment, cut away before it hit the child. When they showed her and her brother crossing the street, I felt like one of them was going to be hit so I didn’t think I’d be so shocked, but something about the swiftness of the scene, the candidness of a film from the 1920s and the proximity of the car to the kid made it feel like the actor was genuinely in danger and pulled a visceral response from me.
Thank you for trashing Miller's Girl, it was SO bad. I was so convinced it would all be a revealed to be the girl being an unreliable narrator because it was all such an overwrought childish view of like intellectualism and forbidden romance... but no, it was just misogynistic trash. The wife was my favorite though. She really wanted to be middle aged Liz Taylor, I loved it.
why on earth was wyatt russell in the swimming pool movie 😭
One episode of Lolita Podcast talks about movies with these child "succubus" characters. It's always gross. Honestly all of Lolita Podcast is devastating and good. As someome else mentioned, Alicia Silverstone in The Crush played a similar role, and surprise surprise, the guy who wrote it was a total garbage man.
My moment of recoil was in, I think it's the first Hobbit movie? Necessary context: I am allergic to, and deathly afraid of, bees. Like, full on uncontrollable panic response. And theres this scene where I think Bilbo falls asleep, and the screen fades to black and then fades back in to these ENORMOUS honey bees coming like right at the screen? Complete with buzzing sounds. I had a like purely primal instinct response of trying to fling myself backward out of the chair. Also, I was in a movie theater, near the front, so these bees were even more enormous and close to my face from that perspective. If the train story is true, and anything like that, its less like I really believed an enormous bee was right in front of me and more like for a moment it was so unexpected, and so terrifying, that my body reacted as if it were real before my brain could convince it that it wasn't.
I love how Jenny mentions that she doesn't like the way her new makeup products work, just as I was thinking about how much I would love to see her do a makeup tutorial lol
Omg yes!!!
I remember the 3D effects of the Terminator 2 Universal Studios show being so insanely good that I had to take my glasses off when the T1000 stretched his head into the crowd because it scared me
Repo! is one of my favourite movies ever and it would be cool if Jenny talked about her thoughts and feelings about it more sometime! I've been obsessed with that movie ever since it came out, from the age of 11. I showed it to my wife when we had been together for a few years and she's been obsessed with it since. The way I see it, people either really dislike it or really love it. No matter which camp Jenny belongs to, I'd enjoy hearing more abt it from her.
Jonathan Bailey is my shayla ever since he voiced g'raha Tia in ffxiv. I'm so glad he's getting his flowers!!!!
I totally agree about dancing through life omg
oh jenny I would pay you so much money to review a Colleen hoover book
‘maybe in the book it’s handled with more grace’ fun fact in the book the framing narrative is that the main character writes letters to ellen degeneres
Your rant around 42 minutes in is so relatable and heartbreaking. I’m so sorry you have to face this. Parasocial dynamics are so hard to manage. You are a creator I enjoy because, yes, you tend to have a similar taste and sensibility to me, but more than that I appreciate how you present and break down your analyses. I agree with you about most things, but not all, and that’s fine! In this video for instance I actually disagree with your take on Quiet Place Day One; to me, the ending seemed congruent with the themes of the film based on my professional and personal experience working with people with terminal cancer. But it didn’t work for you and took you out of it, and that’s fine! It’s just a movie! I just hate that now I’m just so curious about what you were going to share. If it put you in a bad mood then it’s okay not to share it, of course, but I hate that it got in your head. Thank you for all you do, and I’m so happy I signed up for the rambles. They’re all bangers in my opinion.
After I walked out of ExistenZ after seeing it in the theater I felt genuinely like the world wasn't really for a few minutes
My moment of recoil DEFINITELY had to be during the Cats movie when Dame Judi Dench cat stares directly into the camera lens at the end, genuinely jumped in the theater.
I think Trap was well directed and fun. It was great to see Hayley Mills again. But that ending….😂
Lupita is one of my favorite actress! I really liked Day One. This is exactly what I would do if it was the end of the world 🌎 “You guys do whatever, I’m gonna go get pizza!”
Night Swim was about a wishing pool!😂😂😂😂 They built an entire subdivision (and a pool) over an ancient wishing well/pool! 💙
I’m just so happy to see that big ass Porg again!
I can’t believe you’re talking abt millers girl but never bringing up the chicky bickies
I dunno if it helps a couple of your reviews on stuff you didn’t like have ended up getting me to check them out and surprisingly ended up enjoying them a lot. (Stuff like Dear Evan Hansen.) I think thats cool cos I still thought you made good points - I just ended up really jiving with it anyhow. And if it wasn‘t for your review I wouldn’t have ever checked em out in the first place.
Alecia Silverstone was in "The Crush" where she played a 14 year old I think who gets obsessed with her professor neighbor and tried to ruin his life, there's also "devil in the flesh" with Rose McGowan where she's a high school student who gets obsessed with her teacher and tried to murder his wife. There's always been movies like that it's a very odd genre but sometimes really funny
Oh yeah I would kill for Chaos and Tikal in a sonic movie. I feel like that plotline was one of the best in the game series. Although, I keep vying for Big the Cat to be added to the movies. Frankly, they should have put him in the first once, if not the second.
God did yall see how the shadow plushies got SCALPED after the movie release too? It was brutal. I still dont have one :(
I’m sorry some people get so bothered when your opinion isn’t the exact same as theirs. Some people just want to exist in an echo chamber. Personally, when someone I respect has a different opinion than me, I appreciate that because it helps me see it from a different perspective, whether or not I end up agreeing with their take.
Sorry that you didn't feel comfortable enough to keep your unpopular opinion in the video. For what it's worth, I like hearing your unusual takes even when I disagree with them, because even then you usually present an angle I hadn't really seen the movie from. Maybe one day we'll get the Controversial Movie Opinions master video if you change your mind!
I've thought about this for a while and my train coming thru the screen moment was when I went in blind to see Teeth (2007) and not to spoil it but at one point the main character returns to the scene of a crime and the camera cuts to an actual crab walking over a detached phallus
Why did I think "Miller's Girl" was about a college student 😭 i remember that Jennifer Lopez movie from a few years ago where a high school boy is obsessed with her, or FEAR with Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon as examples of the "dangerous obsessed boy" version
My train coming through the screen movie/s were the final fantasy movies. I'm still weary of logtrucks and elevators.
Getting mad at "bad Jenny Nicholson takes" is so funny to me because I feel like her whole job is presenting weird unexpected takes on things in the most entertaining way possible. Like, Jenny drove across the country to get a giant plush spider. She is completely unknowable to me. I am frankly more surprised when we *agree*.
Maybe the next patreon voted topic can be “that one topic Jenny left out because people would be weird about it”
Why would we want to purposely make her uncomfortable?
so jealous of bibble basket smh 💔💔💔
It sucks people can’t be normal about disagreeing with you. I enjoy your takes even if I don’t agree with them, so I’m a bit bummed that part was cut. Definitely prioritize yourself and your happiness though!
I was also fortunate enough to see megalopolis in theaters. 1/10 movie 11/10 viewing experience, I watched it stone cold sober and felt like I’d taken 10 edibles by the end. Absolute cinema
I just bought the BluRay of Megalopolis from Thailand!! I’m just thrilled to live in the timeline where this movie exists 😂👊💙
I hated most everything about the film Long Legs, but that scene of Nick Cage screaming alone in his car really resonated with me.
colleen hoover has NO grace
I think there's definitely another dimension to the parasocial thing, which is that people see Jenny as an arbiter of taste and enjoy being on the same good-taste-high-ground as her when she shares their opinions, and then they feel extremely defensive and almost like rejected from the club when it seems as though suddenly they're not on the high ground anymore and the thing they like isn't seen as good by someone they respect, making them feel kinda dumb for liking a Bad Thing. Most will get over it like normal adults but some will react with basically the same impulse that drives men who get turned down by women to hurl torrents of abuse at them to protect their own ego by pretending that they never liked or respected them and their opinions in the first place
I have never disagreed with jenny more than when she made her video about the tinkerbell disney fairy movies, and yet i still loved the video. to the humans reading this: this is a normal thing to do. you should feel normal when hearing opinions other than yours
I too would love to see Chaos and Tikal and all that lore in the next Sonic Movie.
Kinds of Kindness was in my Top 3 films of 2024, I’m very happy to see you enjoyed it :) I’m a newer patron so I’m not sure if you’ve discussed Yorgos Lanthimos’ other work here before, but if you liked the absurdism in KoK, you should definitely check out his other films! The Favourite is my personal favorite from him, but The Lobster is the most tonally similar to Kinds of Kindness.
The Lobster is phenomenal!
The only "scene" i can remember having a train-adjacent reaction to is not actually from a movie but from Sonic Heroes, the jungle level where at the end you have to escape a giant crocodile coming towards the screen. I vividly remember screaming and throwing my controller away when I saw the crocodile appear when I was 10, fully aware that that was going to happen btw because I had already watched my brother play the game before me lol. It was the scariest thing that had ever happened to me. Thankfully Team Rose got easier levels and they didn't have the crocodile part, so I got to play the whole game as them. But for the other teams, I never gained the courage to go past that jungle level again 😔
Very sorry for waiting until very late to say this (and for potentially being annoying), but I’m very happy Jenny gave Kinds of Kindness a shoutout! The years of 2022-2024 have been a very emotionally challenging one, and that film was extremely cathartic for me. I love it when art can be shocking and uncomfortable, but not go full Lars Von Trier about it. There’s more I can say about the film, but then I’d be writing a review.
My "train coming at me" moment was when I saw the first Jurassic Park in theaters - when the kids were escaping through the ceiling and the raptors jumped to bite at their legs, I jolted my own legs up on my seat. I was also like 4 at the time - I was way too young to see that movie lol
I have little nostalgia for Sonic but Shadow was so cool he convinced me to be a fan of this franchise now
Jenny, I genuinely love your movie reviews whether I agree with them or not, and often you help me realize things I missed in films. Don’t be afraid to honestly give your opinion. You’re so good at clearly explaining yourself and I look forward to it every time.
Yep, I came to the comments to say the same thing. The part about parasocial delusions with content creators probably deserved its own video. So insightful about how the internet / social media / humans work.
The barbie collection in the background makes me really happy.
was a scene from long legs!
You should make a patreon tier called "people who promise not to be weird about my opinions" and the barrier for entry is a social security number and mother's contact information. If anyone breaks the trust you can recruit their mother to shame them and also steal their identity. That is the price we pay for your hottest takes. (But on a serious note im sorry people online cannot be normal)
I'm sorry you feel the need to cut parts of your videos out because of some people's reactions to you expressing opinions contrary to theirs. I know others have already said this, but I think it's useful for me to say it as well to emphasize the point. I enjoy getting to hear your opinions about different media. There have been multiple times when I've watched one of your videos and disagreed with something you've said. But I always enjoy these moments because they allow me to question why I believe something and expand my perspective. A few times now watching your videos has made me question some preconceived notions of mine and change how I think about something, which I really appreciate. The frustrating part is that people who are capable of disagreeing with one of your takes without becoming outraged, like myself, don't feel the need to leave comments. Usually, the people who leave comments are the ones who are outraged, making them more noticeable. So then it seems like those who disagree with you are all outraged. Regardless of whether or not a lot of people react in this way, I'm sure even just having one person be outraged isn't a great feeling. I don't usually comment or engage too much with online communities, but I wanted to say that genuinely I find it interesting and enjoyable to hear your views on different media. One of my favorite things is to put one of your videos or rambles on and listen to it while I sit and paint at my desk. And it makes me sad to hear that you have to worry so much about expressing your opinions because of how people react. I hope it helps to know that at the very least I enjoy getting to hear your opinions on things regardless of whether or not I agree with you. And I know I'm not the only one who feels that way as many others have said the same thing in this comment section.
My "train coming at me" moment was watching Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End in theaters as a 12 y.o. mega fan of both the series and particularly of Orlando Bloom – when he (spoiler!) gets stabbed in the heart during the big battle I literally felt like I had been punched in the chest myself and sort of choked on my own breath. Walked around for the next few days in a sort of dazed state after. Parents were worried about me.
i had visceral fear reactions to a few different moments in CATS (2019) but that was probably mostly down to the fact that i was seeing it on the big screen after accidentally taking like 4x my normal dose of THC and therefore being in an altered state of reality. but i remember biting down on my hoodie and shrieking into it bc i thought one of the cats was about to start sucking another cat's toes (dw my friends and i were the only ones in the theatre). also right at the end of the movie when the dame judy dench cat looks right down the barrel of the camera and starts talking about what we (the audience) have learned about cats, i remember for a split second i felt absolutely certain that i was about to die, but instead of feeling scared i felt euphoric, like i was like I'M GONNA TRANSCEND WITH THE CATS. 10/10 moviegoing experience i'm so serious rn
i’m so sorry that you felt the need to cut something that might be an unpopular opinion - i hope you feel safe enough to share your thoughts and opinions in a welcoming space xxx
Your story of the Shadow order reminds me greatly of the new Arcane pops release... I was checking Shop every day for months and bought them immediqtely when they dropped, remembering how quickly Vi and Jinx sold out... But all three new pops are still available.
I don't really have a "train-coming-at-me-moment," but I do have this annoying thing where I get embarrassed for the people on screen in a movie, and in sympathy I hide behind my hands. I also do this when people kiss on screen, like I'm invading their privacy watching them kiss 🙃
I went to see sonic 3 knowing very little about sonic, because my niece loves everything sonic, and I loved the movie. I'm sure there were lots of references that went over my head, but the story was still good on its own. Also, I'm actively working on a chaos plush for her watching this so it was funny that he came up
I LOVE JENNY FILM REVIEWS !!
It's sad that Jenny feels like she has to cut things out, but I'm glad that she's protecting her peace. (That being said, those of you who are being weird please stop, ffs)
I don't have a train-coming-at-me-moment but I did film studies in uni and just wanted to confirm that that is indeed an urban legend. The other version of the story is that the clip was of a man pointing a gun at the camera and people running away.
yeah, from Great Train Robbery. people really want us to believe audiences were scared of train movies I guess
I remember when I was 8 years old I watched journey to the center of the earth starring Josh Hutcherson. It was the first 3D movie I had ever watched. At the beginning of the movie Brendan Fraser is playing with a yo-yo in a very cheesy-this scene is clearly made solely to be seen in 3D- type of way (something I clearly wasn’t aware of at the time). So when the yo-yo all of the sudden jumps out of the screen, I instinctively and uncontrollably fell out of my seat and accidentally spilled my drink all over my friend lmao
random tangent but if you’re looking for cute well designed horror tshirts - studio house designs is a small shop but I love them you can find their insta. they recently did a lisa frankenstein drop and do a lot of tiedye colors
Omg I love Lisa Frankenstein… it’s like someone took my fantasy about having a Victorian sadboy zombie boyfriend RIGHT OUT OF MY BRAIN and made it into a movie
This was a good recap of a lot of horror movies I saw trailers for but didn't watch. I find horror movie plots interesting but I don't actually enjoy watching the horror.
which one of yall are RUINING the content with weird comments?? Now I want to know what the cut section was so badly. Sorry this has been the case for you, Jenny! Sending you love
Ruining is craaaazy this content is still good even with people getting weird in the comments.
Literally one of my favoite things about Jenny's videos is hearing things that challenge my pre established opinions
So bonkers to me the degree of parasociality that’s got people expressing like, betrayal over something as inconsequential as an, as mentioned, mid opinion on some film or other. As if Jenny’s displeasure is thief of Their joy. (Also like. In this metaphorical economy!? Get a grip, find some bigger fish to fry) But on top of all that, the specific brand of parasociality is so weird to me. Like, what’s personally fun or compelling about someone who agrees with your every media take? I’m at my most delusional about my relevance to content creators when I’m typing up my (respectful ofc) long-winded, tone-matched counterpoints to their own critique, as if this is a convo and they give a shit lol. “Omg I agree,” is fine, I love to hear people more articulate than me platform a shared hot take, but it’s definitely less gear-turning than a video that challenges my own perspective (makes me reconsider it or want to defend it or both). And the very few things I hold too dear to hear torn to shreds by someone who’s videos I watch for fun (I mean, for one, probably won’t ever be subjects that come up, but if they did), like, pass. Do not click. The premise was in the title! There’s not a gun to anyone’s head, I hope. People have lost all ability to curate their experience online. They just want to moderate everyone else’s into perfect smooth SpongeBob conformity with their every opinion and particular comfort zone. Your crit is always so thoughtful and well done and funny and generous! I def don’t always 100% agree, but I’ve never once thought that your take was unfair, and it is always clear where you’re coming from, because you walk us through it!
Lol, Jenny hates Hereditary and I think it's literally the best movie ever made. I can't even fathom unsubscribing for that difference of opinion. Most of my faves are fairly (or very) contentious, anyway.
Not to defend colleen hoover bc she is quite a bad writer but I do feel the abuse aspect of It Ends With Us was handled fairly well in the book. That's about all positive I can say about a book that was half-narrated via letters to Ellen Degeneres.
I have arachnophobia, so personally I never expect us to have the same opinions lol. Wish I could have heard your take about that mystery movie but I understand keeping your opinions to yourself in order to avoid unhinged viewers 🙃
Awwww man I wanted to hear your controversial opinion! Wild to me that someone would subscribe to someone's patreon and then go and harass them about their opinions?? Just go unsubscribe... For the question, it's this bit in a late 90s horror movie called "The Haunting" with Owen Wilson that otherwise is unremarkable, but there's a scene when a string instrument in a haunted house spookily tightens its strings by itself, and then Owen Wilson comes up and strokes the strings with his fingers and then one of the strings snaps and hits him in the eye. I think about it every time I see like a zither or something.
Happy Valentine's day Jenny! Your peeps here on Patreon send you lots of love and support. :)
I can highly recommend the series Severance if you're interested in a good series. It's very tense and the atmosphere is really surreal and the character development is excellent (:
also - Repo! The Genetic Opera mention!!! One of my absolute favorite movies!!! I personally enjoyed Emilia Perez, and the only other person I know who enjoyed it compared it to Repo (which I exposed him to) so you comparing it to Repo was like the "guess it's not just us" moment for us
Saw Daddio this year (don't recommend) and there's a scene in the back of the taxi where the main girl is getting sexts from her boyfriend and she receives a text that says verbatim "I need your pink" - I was dying
my personal train scene is definitely the nighttime beach moment from lord of the flies where they stab the “monster” to death. Just the implication of that scene along with the kids screaming and the visual afterwards when the sun comes up makes me genuinely so sick to my stomach…When I watched it in highschool I had to enter like a fetal-esque position at my desk chair to cancel out the noise.
I have a suggestion. Maybe Jenny could try getting a moderator or two to remove or ban angry/parasocial comments? It really broke my heart to hear how much the comments and tweets are affecting her, and I want her to continue freely sharing her thoughts--it's why most of us are here I'd assume. To hear her say "I'm deleting this section and I don't want to share it" made me so sad.
For the discussion question I fully believe it is real even if it’s roots are in an urban legend because one time I watched a tiktok of people playing softball or baseball and the ball ricochet’s off of something and flies directly at the camera causing me to fully primal fight/flight duck out of the way and also throw my phone at the same time
I subscribed for your humor, your opinions, and you presenting your opinions in a humorous way. And you keep delivering, so, thank you!
I'm so sorry that people attack you all the time for your opinions. I don't always agree with your opinions, but I don't want to debate or argue with you about them. Because we don't know each other. Not to mention, it's your opinion and you don't ask me to put mine in the comments down below. I listen to you because I like hearing what you have to say. Even when I don't like what you're saying. I don't want to be in a bubble or echo chamber. Thanks for being so patient with those who don't turn creepy. Just more proof that magic isn't real...
Echoing the other comments - your opinions are great! And, no, I don't always agree with you, but you always make me think about it in a new way, and that is worth it. So sorry you had to go through that with another person.
I watch your videos for YOUR opinions. Not to reinforce my own. Your unique perspective is the reason I subscribe. :) some people really need to step back and reevaluate how they think. ( Do y’all only keep friends irl who have a 100% alignment with your opinions on media? How is that even possible? My best friends and I argue all the time over different takes we have on movies, and that’s part of the fun tbh. Idk.) My point is that the value I find in your videos is your voice and your opinion, even when I disagree. And for everyone else, knock it off! The patreon format can sometimes feel more personal than YouTube, but creators are their own persons not an extension of your own personality.
47:00 is genuinely the funniest transition
Aww man, I wanted to hear your unpopular take. Sorry people suck!
Jenny, I know this is off topic, I didn't know where to post this but, I was looking at the Movies and TV section of Youtube and 'Opposite Worlds' came up. You can buy the first season, 12 ep., for $20. I'm tempted to buy it, just because of your review of it. Those poor people.
BARBIE VIDEO MENTIONED YISSSS
The sonic movies could easily be rated 5/10 but for fans it's an easy 15/10 I can't wait for the next one!!!
I NEED to see Cream the Rabbit in the next sonic movie, like my life depends on it
I hope you’ll start using your BlueSky account and leave Twitter because it sounds like a cesspool these days
THIS FALSITY THAT YOU WALLOW IN! IT WILL DEVOUR YOU! Oh my god I laughed like a drain
FAH-UHN-LY someone gave your reductive short stories a second glance!
Girl dont buy makeup off tik toks please. Look up Robert Welsh
The movie election did the teen girl w adult man. W reese witherspoon. But I dont feel like it really frames her as evil, more that the man is pathetic and loses his mind
I got such a rush from the Live and Learn scene that it turned me into a sonic fan after loosely following the franchise for years, I GET IT now
It's been a while since I saw Trap, but I feel like it wasn't as thrilling as the band-aid subplot of this video
Jenny, Ghostface Killah is a Wu Tang member 😭 the scream character is just Ghostface
I was thinking the same thing, so funny.
The review of millers girl is killing me 😂
Ahhh barbie video!!! Thank you good and kind jenny 🙌🙌
why is he not loved
YOU NEVER MENTIONS BUGS LAND. BUT BUGS LAND THE OG MOVIE BASED LAND
WHAT ABOUT BUGS LIFE
JENNY! URGENT PLEADE
I'm never at risk of that parasocial interaction with you because I have a tattoo from Angel the buffy spinoff
my modern day train would be the warped face jumpscare that lingers onscreen in inland empire. i have never felt genuine terror watching a movie in my life but that scene is an exception, totally horrific
my modern day train has got to be hugh grant oompa loompa.
the modern day train coming towards the screen is seeing speed racer (2008) in theaters. so many colors humans hadn't seen before.
Thank you for another fantastic Patreon video!
The moment that first came to mind for a "train moment" for me is when I first saw Return to Oz as a child, on video. . .I remember literally screaming and running out of the room when all the heads wake up in Momby's palace.
The wife in Miller’s Girl was giving the same energy as the crazy lady with the crazy accent from that Randy Moore movie.
I love hearing your opinions even when it's different than mine, I hope you'll feel comfortable to express your thoughts again, especially here.
When it comes to some people's strong response to even mild criticism of movies, media I think it goes beyond just parasoical connections to social media personalities (Is there a better term than social media personalities?). I suspect there's something else at play too. On fan forums and fan subreddits I've seen an increasing amount of lectures / rants by fans who take other people's opinions of media they enjoy VERY PERSONALLY. It quickly becomes clear that it isn't just a difference of opinions that bothers them. It's something else. They identify with these shows in some way and take any criticism deeply to heart and respond as if they were attacked. I can count a good half dozen times I've seen people express that they feel like they're being "bullied" or other people are being "hateful" in their review of some given movie or film that they really enjoy. The responses seem deeply personal. Some of these people will openly say they feel personally attacked, and they can't seem to process other people's opinions in anyway but assume other people are being unnecessarily hateful or that there must be some explanation other than that someone else has a different / valid opinion. Part of my point being it's not just the unhealthy "connection" to the social media personality, but also the media. It's a strange dynamic that seems to really show up on fan forums, but I'm sure exists everywhere. Anyway, enjoy the videos, don't let the folks who can't handle these kind of things get to you ... I fear if they're not upset because you skipped one topic, they will be when you say something about... The Legend of Zelda TV series (that show speaks to the truth of the human condition).
I havent the slightest clue how difficult being a YouTuber is and putting your opinion out there without anonymity, but what inspires me is the fact you are not afraid to be yourself. For instance, I unironically loved the book ready player one 😅 but you didn't and that's fine! You are surrounded by barbies and adorable stuff, and yet you love horror! You are a witty enigma and I hope you continue to share your awesomeness online and not get discouraged by the crazies, but I understand wanting to not set them off either 😮💨
I will say that my wife and I both have very little knowledge of Sonic (I happened to have seen all 3 in theaters, she has only seen 2 and 3) but we had a great time with 3. Knuckles is our personal favorite but if I ever find a Build a Bear Shadow I will acquire him so fast. My personal train scene is BOB from Twin Peaks - I saw a clip on YouTube of him coming toward the screen and had to close the tab. Too bad bc I really think I would vibe with the show, but I absolutely cannot watch him ever again.
I'm just so excited about the Barbies in the background and the implication that she'll be finishing the Barbie movies video. :D :D
Oh lord, I had to put my hand over the damn screen when that Jenna Otega scene came on. FUCKING CrINGE
For my train scene, figure I'll give one Jenny answer (scene from a movie so awful I recoiled in disgust, like the DEH scene) and one Danielle answer (scene from a film that made me recoil, because it was designed to do so): Jenny Answer: In "Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny," a movie Rifftrax did a thorough roast of, Santa Claus is stuck in Florida, as part of a Borgesian nested narrative that would later influence works like House of Leaves and Black Mirror's Bandersnatch. Understandably, the jolly old saint has been sweating, quite a lot, which explains some dark patches on his thick suit. But at a certain point, when he stands up, turning around to lazily gaze at his sleigh (which has not been assisted by a gorilla), the viewer has the clear, unavoidable, and honestly eldritch realization that the large, central, brown stain in the middle of the back of Santa Claus' pants is most likely not, in fact, sweat. I did scream, out loud, for like at least a full minute, covering my eyes.
Danielle Answer: One of the moments that I think actually changed horror film as a whole, and even culture in the United States to a large extent, is the very last scene in "Friday the 13th." Nobody remembers anymore that while, yes, the movie IS a slasher... the killer is a middle-aged woman, taking revenge for the death of her innocent disabled son. There is no supernatural aspect whatsoever. Teenagers have sex, just as they did in the previous season when poor child Jason Voorhees drowned because no one was watching him, and his vengeful mother brutally murders them, in a twisted reflection of American puritan abstinence-only values. It's basically "Reefer Madness" with gore. UNTIL after the Final Girl is lazing around, sitting in her boat, which, to the audience, is a bit odd, as you think she has already been rescued and the mother murderess killed, and one takes a moment to recall why it is that all this happened on Camp Crystal Lake. Because the disabled, especially children, deserve respect, and you have to- NOPE FUCKIN SURPRISE ZOMBIE CHILD LEAPS OUTTA THE WATER AND HE'S MANGLED AS FUUUUUUCK DUDE HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THIS FREAK JESUS CHRIST LOUD STINGER oh it was all a dream OR WAS IT???? It basically ended the post-Hayes Code attempt at forcing morality plays into every slasher film, confirmed that literalism was less important to this audience than tight scares and good effects (no, ok, it doesn't actually make sense that Jason Voorhees is a hockey-mask-wearing dude with a chainsaw who is an immortal zombie that just hates sex. Why do you care?), and in a moment of supposed tranquility made audiences, and me, sit the HELL up and go "AAAAH oh whoa that was actually kinda cool do more of that"
jesus hearing that Miller's Girl dialogue is what is finally motivating me to finish my scripts and submit them
Yes!! Love this 👏
my pick for Amy in the sonic movie would be Ayo Edebiri. She’s super hot right now (for good reason) and her VO work in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Inside Out 2 were great and I think she’d fit well
i’m so curious about what your unpopular opinion is but i completely understand wanting to brace yourself from hostility. people are so cruel
This is such a good discussion question. The bathtub drain scene in Saltburn.
My train moment is probably the part in Green Room when Anton Yelchin's character gets his chopped up by machetes. You don't actually see it being done but you see and hear him go through it and he did such a good job in that scene 'cause he genuinely sounded like a person in agony to the point where I felt legitimately disturbed. Then they reveal his arm and I had such a visceral reaction like I could not get far enough away from the screen. Also recently in the new animated Ultraman movie when Emi falls off tokyo tower and Ultraman barely catches her by her arm and it snaps I was very unprepared for that.
Me and my kids screamed in the theater with the Amy reveal.
Just because I haven't seen a comment mentioning this yet I really like your knit hat. It looks warm and fashionable.
I keep forgetting to watch your patreon videos because I can't put them on my watch later playlist on youtube because "this content is for children"... is that something you could fix? This video didn't feel like it was very much for children haha, with all the discussion of Miller's Girl
I thin she explained previously (can’t remember where sorry) that they had to be set as videos for children to prevent ads being put on them? Or something along those lines? And perhaps also to limit people sharing them with non patrons.
Patreon is my favorite eeveelution
My train moment was the last act of The Substance. My mouth was agape the entire time, and I was pushing myself into the back of the theatre chair. I couldn’t believe they were going THAT hard in the finale.
My train moment is from a movie I genuinely really love, but cannot rewatch because of 1 scene. Everything Everywhere All At Once. The paper cut scene. My hands are literally squeezing my fingers together just thinking of it.
Really cool to hear that you enjoyed kinds of kindness! It was my favorite of the year, and the second part of it really resonated with me through a difficult time, I wish more people saw it! Also I’m sorry you have to deal with people who are so unkind and parasocial towards you, I think I speak for many of your fans when I say that I appreciate your well articulated opinions on anything that interests you, whether I agree or not! my train moment was the nose breaking scene in titane or the car scene in Beau is afraid. >_<
Do whatever it takes to insulate yourself from online negativity. Appreciate what you do. Keep up the good work!
I wonder how many of the stuffed toys behind Jenny are imaginary now…
My train was the moment at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when the web turns into a hand.
today i watched Repo the genetic opera, compared it to that transgender operation musical scene, and then schortly after watched this and got crazy whiplash. i love you
My train isn't my train but my dad's train, which is pretty much anything gore. He came to mind instantly when you brought it up because he has this habit of yelling and flailing around to cover his eyes when something too gross is on the screen lol. And not, like, someone gets stabbed gore... the best example I can think of was watching Ready or Not when she has the wound in her hand and stabs her hand through with the nail on the ladder. Or in a horror movie where there's a chase sequence, and they're trying to close the door before the monster gets them - he starts clapping and yelling at them to move faster. It's very fun to watch movies with him because of it :)
I'm a diehard scooby doo fan and nothing in your videos has ever given me more joy than watching you rip into SD and the Goblin King for how unabashedly awful it is (excepting the Skeleton Train, which should be real and in my house). I don't get it when people take disasgreeing movie opinions so seriously. It lets me think about the thing I like in a whole new light, like watching it again for the first time.
I just rewatched your goblin king review and I totally misremebered you as hating it because your opinion was different than mine. Well! That just goes to show you no one is immune to youtube commenter take-it-personal syndrome, ha!
i would love to see a video about the storyline at great wolf lodge
Count me as intrigued!
My moment that made me physically recoil from the screen was near the end of The Substance. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it, but something is spraying on an audience and it made me physically repulsed in a way I've never experienced at a movie. And I really love The Substance, I think it's an incredible movie, but I NEVER want to watch it again
I recently saw Emilia Perez and truly it was such a bad movie. I think out of context perhaps some of the musical numbers can look interesting, but so much of it is laughably bad (and most of it is at least regular bad).
I think I saw that comment you’re referring to on your Mean Girls video, (the “you’ve changed”/“you’re so negative now” nonsense) and I remember being so put-off by it I almost responded to them. But then of course I decided it wasn’t worth it. I don’t know if it’s odd to say, but I’m glad you blocked them— there’s something so unhealthy about that kind of reaction to a simple media criticism video (of which you’ve made many) and no one should have to deal with that.
Train Moment: The 1986 Sci-Fi Roller Skating movie 'Solar Babies' features a scene where the bad guys put someone's hand into a dehydrating beam and it withers away: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIsqInq_YT0
My gf and I watched Sonic 3 in theater on Christmas day and we were like... two of the only adults in the theater. Then when that end-credits sequel-hook happened, all the kiddos erupted in excited cheers when Amy removed her hood. It was honestly kinda wholesome! I had this perception that Amy wasn't that popular but I was positively surprised ^.^
Sorry about my shots fired comment before, I was commenting somewhat jokingly about saying people who like Lana del Rey have bad taste which was a funny aside. Didn't realize there would later be a serious segment about how people get upset about your opinions, always love hearing diverse opinions! Great Ramble.
I remember this because I got in trouble for doing it on the school computer when the dinosaur sounds came through the speakers. Neopets had some jumps scares in the flash days.
If you want to disagree healthily to cleanse the palate and reset, let me know. We disagree on many things, but I don’t tune in because we agree or need validation. I like your takes, even neutral ones. You’re an example of effectively defending your thoughts with evidence. Sorry you got attacked on your Patreon! My train was the FREAKING alien from Signs. The one at the child’s birthday party. That’s the only time I felt compelled to run in a theater. Spooky!
I appreciate your opinion wether or not I agree.
"what was your theater train moment" one of the family drama/grief scenes in Heredetary made me so upset i almost threw up. one of the best movies i've ever seen. it was absolutely horrible. i'd never watch it of my own free will again. 10/10
Girl are you okay... Why are you filling so many bandaids with blood
Train moment is not from a movie, but I still live in fear for my life of the gnomes that would steal your jelly beans in the first two harry potter PC games.
My train moment would be anytime the kangaroo was on screen in kangaroo jack that really messed me up for kagaroos for life
my train moment is that scene in challengers when you become the ball i literally jumped up
Bilbo Baggins face change in Rivendell in LOTR:FOTR is my old timey train. Jumped out of my cinema seat and STILL gets me on every rewatch x
I think the scariness is increased because the sound mixing in the LOTR trilogy has the normal dialog parts pretty quiet, so that if you turned up the volume to comfortably hear them speak, the loud parts become super loud. So you go from Bilbo having a nice conversation with Frodo, a little silence, and then suddenly super loud Bilbo snarl.
I appreciate these rambles (and your main channel vids) a lot so I’m sorry to hear you’re getting grief. I think I don’t share opinions with you on anything except Star Wars, but you seem so genuine in your enjoyment of some things that it makes your critiques feel doubly valid. Hope you’ve not been having too rough a time of it.
If the self-sacrifice scene didn't test well, it was probably because the first movie in the series (which is would argue did not even need to be a series) already did that thing, and in a more interesting way. The through-lines of parental love & sacrifice, as well as grief and self-forgiveness were what made A Quiet Place so compelling. It's one of my favorite horror movies because and I feel like that's because I was also watching a movie about a real family trying to endure something horrific. I agree that it would have been more interesting to take on telling almost the opposite story (being motivated to live for the people you love). Then at least it wouldn't feel like a story with something to say had kind of devolved into a series of cash grabs. If you like horror I really do reccomend the first movie.
Train scene for me is squidward's toenail from SpongeBob. Visceral.
for like 10 minutes of trap (when the pop star goes to the killer's house) I thought shyamalan was about to pull a really fun twist where the it turns out the serial killer isn't just the dad but the whole family, including the daughter
SAME that would've been a very cool twist
The closest to a train moment for me would have to be when I saw James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss as a small child that had little experience with 3D. During the moment when the claw was slowing reaching its way out of the proscenium arch, little me kept backing up further into my seat like I was Jim Carrey doing a bit! I was fully aware of what 3D was like before entering the theater, yet my instincts still made me back away.
Way back before she got a lot of eyeballs on her, I actually couldn't stand Jenny. I don't know if it was because I got theater kid vibes from her and I had an attitude with that crowd, but I initially wrote her off until I took a chance on the Troll book review and finally saw the hype. Personally, I enjoy her work more when I don't see eye to eye with her. I don't want the media I engage with to dissolve into an echo chamber, seeking out different points of views is how one makes up their own. So when I hear that people get so bent out of shape over a quaint disagreement, to the point that it dictates what she wants to say in her own videos, I can't help but feel like some people just straight up suck at being adults.
The "train moment" that popped into my head first would probably be the part in the second Dr Strange movie and I'm about to explain this terribly because I don't actually know anything about Marvel and I watched this one purely because I wanted to see another Sam Raimi movie. But anyway the bit where a character's mouth disappears and then he screams so loud his head explodes got me so good because I genuinely wasn't expecting something so visceral to happen it was great. I didn't care for the movie's writing or plot but Sam Raimi continues to be an excellent director.
When I was in high school, I went with friends to see the new Friday the 13th remake. I had never seen the franchise before so didn’t know what to expect. At the end when the monster jumps out of the water, I was scared so bad I literally jumped out of my seat.
Jenny I'm so so excited for the Barbie video!! I'm a doll collector and barbie lover and I always love seeing your dolls in the background :) I'm sure you're excited to see Teresas cooking movie when it comes out in march lmao. The dolls for that one are not looking great
It sounds so boring 😞
There are 2 train moments that had me pressed into my seat. The first was in The Ring, when Samara climbed out of the television. The second was the moment the Rat King appeared in The Last of Us Part 2.
The Crush is a sucubus movie about a minor who falls for a writer who is renting a room on her parents property. She attempts to seduce him and after he rebuffs she becomes murderous. The character is definitely Lolita coded. I believe it was Alicia Silverstone’s first movie.
Good thing I only have a parasocial relationship with my best friend, Defunctland
I hope it's not an annoying patron thing when I have structural engineering insights about theme park things you posit about (I think so far you've always been right and I'm just agreeing and saying why you're right even when you aren't sure if you are) 😂
I didn't know that Shadow wasn't as popular as I thought. Shadow has been my favorite since day one because I love a tortured, edgy, character who only opens up for one person. Knuckles and Tails are tied for my second favorite, then Amy and Sonic are tied for third.
That Miller's Girl movie sounds like someone read Lolita and said "well I just feel like that didn't give pedophiles a fair shake 🤔"
"Perhaps she WAS asking for it? DEMANDING it, perhaps? 🤔"
according to Jacob gallers video on it the train thing never happened! People were dumb but not that dumb. the more you know!
Jenny, I do feel frustrated on your behalf at the lack of introspection and self awareness from people who don't realise you're not an extension of them. But I must confess I do love the voice you use when you're mimicking them.
My train moment was 124 hours when he (spoilers) cuts off his arm. There's a bit where you see him sever the nerves and it's so visceral and my gag reflex was so activated. Also yay Barbie video.
My movie moment is J.K. Simmons throwing a chair at Miles Teller in Whiplash. Great movie, but that made me start sobbing in front of my (at the time, brand new) boyfriend.
My dad passed away last week from cancer in a hospice- the nurses there get excited if someone is getting up to go to the bathroom unassisted, its a little morbidly funny to think of one of their patients in an action protagonist situation haha Edit unrelated- about the creepy intense negative energy from people over lukewarm takes, I feel its because you're a woman that, by a strength of character I am sure I do not possess, is a public figure on the internet. I wish for a world where you can post your high quality videos, a little oasis in the big sea of content for me to sit for a moment and enjoy, and all the comments are just normal and none are scream crying. A beautiful dream. I do hope you keep making content. It seems silly to say but I am very grateful to have had your videos over the past 3 years. Caregiving uproots your whole life and I frankly dont know how I would have kept sane without your videos and others like it to help me unwind or even sleep during the harder parts. So thank you for putting yourself out there and putting so much care into everything you do.
I'm so very sorry for your loss, and also feel for you in regards to caregiving. I lived with my best friend for years and when she passed I struggled with simultaneously feeling immense grief and overwhelming relief. Hugs to you!
Ooh, what a mess! LOL
Jenny I love your movie/ tv reviews! Sorry some people are weirdos
Thank you Jenny for getting it up on Youtube. :)
I feel like everyone who talks about Megalopolis is the most mad about a different scene
My train moment was this last Christmas. “Haul Out the Holly” starring Lacy Chambert genuinely had me cringing back in my seat when I had a bad movie marathon with my family. I have a fear of small towns and how little privacy and autonomy is available in small communities, and THIS movie literally had me close to tears. It’s about a career woman going back to her hometown and learning the meaning of Christmas etc- EXCEPT, she doesn’t just fall in love with small town whimsy. The local HOA is literally stalking her and harassing her to follow their regulations and there’s this scene where the entire neighborhood is pressed up against the windows of her house and I felt such legitimate fear, it made me want to crawl out of my skin.
Like that scene between Evan and his mom, I recoiled in horror and then had to remind myself they weren’t going to hurt her and this was meant to be heartwarming.
My train moment is in Splice 2009, when Adrien Brody has sex with his young monster daughter. An already uncomfortable moment enhanced by the fact that I was watching it with my parents. I watch a lot of horror and have never felt such visceral dread as I did in that moment
As possibly the only Mormon that enjoyed heretic, I also don’t see why so many Mormons were upset with the movie
Also a Mormon, but haven't watched Heretic. I hadn't heard of it until Jenny talked about it. Horror isn't usually my thing but I admit I am intrigued. From what I have read (mostly just Wikipedia), it doesn't sound like it is specifically against the church, but religion in general. Also it doesn't seem like the church actually put out any official statement except stuff about missionary safety.
Annoys me that we’re kind of missing out on content from this video because some people can’t be normal about Jenny having opinions.
I think this was from 2023 but the monkey scene in nope was definitely my train coming towards me moment in a movie
Mine is in “A Quiet Place” when she steps on the nail. I scream for her.
"The video might *only* end up being 3 hours long" is such a flex, honestly.
Watching this literally with my build-a-bear Shadow beside me whom I panic bought because I was scared he’d sell out.
Miller’s Girl sounds like Hard Candy if it was bad. Like they’re using a similar concept but Miller’s Girl is unwilling to fully go there, it just utilizes pedophilia instead of being willing to just go all the way with the psychopath tween girl concept like Hard Candy.
I paused the video as she was describing this movie and said to my wife “or you could just watch Hard Candy, which whips.” Glad to know I wasn’t the only one.
I've been waiting for someone to put an "All Things Sonic" topic on the ramble voting board, but this was a nice little consolation prize! I kept saying "YES" out loud to all your opinions on the movie, and the games, Amy Rose, etc. haha (I loved Tikal, too!)
When I saw the trailer for Miller’s Girl my first thoughts were “this looks…trashy” and “why did these two accomplished actors sign onto this??”
In V the mini series they (spoiler alert) discover that the human looking aliens are actually reptiles and there's a closeup of one, still in human form, who suddenly extends a snake tongue towards the camera and I hid my face in my arms. In the follow-up "V - The Final Battle" they do it again with (spoiler again) a baby. I had the same exact reaction again.
I think people have trouble comprehending parasocial relationships because they can feel like actual relationships but aren't. When a YouTuber has a take I disagree with, I think, “Hmm… interesting. I wonder why”, not “If I say something terrible. That’ll get their attention.”
for me it was def the moment in Nope when they children dressed as aliens were approaching daniel kaluuya in the barn. i was sitting in the back row and i could see that everyone below me were recoiling in their seats just like i was
Didn't lurch back, but forward, while watching Nosferatu because William Defoe was moving franticly and I was scared he was going to step on a rat. My instinct was to grab/steady him lest he accidentally injure any poor rats.
William Dafoe said he really loved working with the rats
For what it's worth part of why I like watching your work is our differing opinions! I'm not much of a Star Wars person and I strongly dislike Kylo Ren, but I like hearing your positive thoughts. And vice versa, some stuff I've loved and you've hated, and it's fun hearing your reasoning. It's weird enough when people think their friends need to have the same opinions as them, sorry this is happening to you with complete strangers.
sorry people are like that. love your opinions even when you hate things i like or like things i hate. the way you analyze is whats fascinating not the exact opinion
Aw it’s sad to hear that because I would hope most creators feel more comfortable being devisive on thier Patreon vs. thier regular channel. I LOVE Rouge One, and I told myself before I watched your video that i better not click play if I can’t handle watching a video clearly titled with the opposite opinion. Still thought it was a hilarious video!
Jenny I NEED your take on the 2021 Saw spinoff movie Spiral starring Chris Rock. I think it's mad underrated but I promise not to be a freak if you disagree.
I think she might’ve discussed Spiral on her podcast appearance with Sardonicast!
My train movie moment is from when I was a little kid and I would always, ALWAYS jump out of my skin when the frozen sea monster’s eyeball moved in Ice Age 2. Didn’t matter that it was one of my most rewatched movies so of course I knew when it was coming lol.
Ok my current train moment is the whole first half of The Family Stone. If my family wants to watch it during Christmas time I have to leave the room bc it gives me too much second-hand anxiety and embarrassment to watch the family bully and willfully misinterpret Sarah Jessica Parker’s character. I can come back in at the point where she’s in the bar with Luke Wilson tho.
Nooo Jennie please share your controversial takes
In 2025 (really since the 2010s), Aaron Sorkin-esque, "witty" dialogue is even more cringe than Joss Whedon-esque, "quippy" dialogue. Every line spoken from Miller's Girl shown was embarrassingly awful.
My train moment is two scenes from the same movie, one of which involves a train lol: Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. During the big moment where the aliens emerge from the ground I inexplicably got nauseous and so full of dread I wanted to bolt. Same with the scene where everyone is at a railroad crossing and a burning train blows by them… watching that as a teen in theatres was so intense. The only other time I ever felt that way was with Peter Jackson’s King Kong when Andy Serkis gets his head munched on by a giant slug oof
My train moment was the aeroplane scene in The Boys. I literally had a panic attack and had to leave the room 😅😭
I couldn’t watch more after the opening
I wonder if the published Reylo fic was 'the hurricane wars' by Thea Guanzon - I knew of her from AO3 (and liked her writing style, she even got to publish an official short story for the Star Wars extender universe), but still haven't read her book, and don't know which of her fanfics it's based on
I actually really enjoyed watching trap. To be fair it was most definitely because I watched it over discord with a friend at 3am but as the third act went on and he kept escaping capture in more absurd ways it became truly and extremely funny. It was also raised up in the rankings of our wee hours bad movie club because we read the Wikipedia page after (mostly because we were looking for the filming locations because we're from southern ontario) and it truly reads like it was written by shyamalan himself it's so funny
Also people are very weird with their taste in media especially online. Like I know so many people in real life that don't share my taste in media at all and like it hardly ever matters. But online it often seems like it gets to the point where you are made a bad person just cause you like or dislike something.
I once commented in a discussion about a book that I really disliked said book and it inspired someone in a tangential thread to wax indignant about the declining quality of education in the Western world because clearly anyone who dislikes this one book that they enjoyed must just be a big dummy dumb who doesn’t know how to f***ing read lmao… like ok whatever you need to tell yourself I guess
I also love making fun of stuff I love. It's kinda like you have stuff that you relate too, but you realize it's not for everyone and it does have its flaws but sometimes that makes it even more endearing.
my train scene is the level in Tomb Raider 2 where you climb down into this cave area and it's smooth going until you find an important item and that triggers the FRICKIN TYRANNOSAUR
For what it is worth, I first started watching your videos because you had a very different opinion of TLJ than I and articulated it so well.
A recent-ish train moment for me was the freaky alien Renesme baby in Alien Romulus. Genuinely sent me into fight or flight!
My train moment: Now I'm a horror gal. I watched Rosemary's Baby & Dumplings while holding my newborn. I've seen & felt things in horror. I love letting a film play me like a fiddle. But I have never ugly cried more than at Okja. I had to pause it and go outside for air. Like, fuuuccckkkkk
(Loved the Poker Face reference to it. Also everyone should go watch Poker Face with Natasha Lyonne. Crazy underrated)
My train moment: I’m probably misremembering this to some extent because it was years ago and I was a kid at the time, but there was a text-based choose your own adventure game on Neopets where you enter a beast’s cave. As you got closer to the beast, the game kept giving you options to leave. As I recall, it gave prompts like “you can feel the beast’s breath. Are you SURE you want to continue?” and I got so scared every time and exited before I could ever see the beast. I attempted multiple times, and on subsequent tries I would give myself pep talks like “it’s not real. It’s on Neopets so it’s probably not that scary,” but the train sensation hit me every time lol.
No, I remember that too. It ended with a flash animation of a roaring pterosaur. That was pretty creepy for a kid's game.
Can't believe parasocial Mean Girls fans deprived us of a segment on the music biopic Kneecap and hearing you say Tiocfaidh ár lá.
You’ve actually roasted quite a few of my favorite movies in your videos, and I really enjoyed that! I feel like even if you really don’t like something, you’re never actually cruel or nasty about it: you play it up for the bit, but that’s it! Like, I LOVE Wreck-it Ralph. You very openly talked about how much you dislike that movie. I would kill for a 40 minute video of you explaining why! Sometimes it’s fun hearing the opposite opinion, y’know? For the discussion piece, I’m afraid of bugs so I got 3: the Aragog scenes in Harry Potter, the giant Spider scenes from the LotR movies, and Adrien Brody going through the giant bug jungle in King Kong. My soul is leaving my body just typing this out.
What do you think about the Hobbit spiders? I like spiders and I'm usually not afraid. Shelob is pretty scary, but still okay, the ones in HP are okay, tho I don't like dead Aragog. Still completely fine. But the ones in Hobbit... They were REALLY hard to watch, especially in a theater. I don't know what it was about them, but they scared me.
That fact that you feel the need to edit out bits on your own Patreon is unfortunate. I personally tune in to listen to your opinions and viewpoints with no expectations of them being exactly like my own. I hope you feel more comfortable sharing in the future. I am also so looking forward to the Barbie video as a former Barbie child.
Same about that first bit. I also don't usually see anyone see anything that bad about her via Patreon. Not sure if she's getting emails or PMs, but I think Jenny shouldn't let it get to her so much. Not in like an "invalidating her stress" kind of way; just that it might be good to do if she finds it possible.
I can think of a recoil moment in a movie I just watched! And it's a highly regarded movie too. In the Ang Lee film Eat Drink Man Woman, the three daughters are still living at home, partially because they are worried about leaving their father alone in their big house (the mom died when they were kids). They suspect a romance might be brewing between their father and a neighbor woman his age (Mrs. Liang) who has been a friend of their family for as long as they can remember, but then at the end the father stands up during one of their family dinners and announces that he is indeed in love...with Mrs. Liang's daughter! A woman his daughters' age that he's known since she was a child. That scene had me sliding backward into my couch cushions trying to hide from it.
my train scene is from the first season of american horror story where the infantada attacks that one mean girl in the basement of the murder house. i think i was 12 when i first watched it and i was so scared i didn’t watch the rest of that season until i was well into high school. that stupid evil baby was the boogeyman for me. id get scared to look behind doors or in dark rooms bc i thought it would be there
The train thing is such an interesting question! I’ll have to start thinking about mine
Oh! Maybe Lake Mungo. We all know the scene haha. I’m a very reactive viewer but it reached a new level where I was bawling my eyes out
omg i would LOVE a jenny m night shyamalan video!
your sweater brings out your eyes!!!
I really like when your opinion is different from mine! It's a great opportunity for me to re-consider if I still feel the same way about something after getting a different perspective.
Exactly! And it's just nice to see someone find things they love about something that I didn't think about or didn't understand why someone would like. I think my love of camp came after years of small exercises of suspension of disbelief like that- to melt the heart of the cynic, if that makes sense
My train moment was understandable: I was very young and I caught a glimpse of Pink Floyd's "The Wall," where children fall off a conveyor belt into a meat grinder. I was deeply horrified, to the point that, until adulthood, just the mention of Pink Floyd would turn my stomach. It wasn't until I watched Dan Olson's "Comfortably Doug" that I even understood the context. Still won't watch the movie, but now I at least don't find the very thought of it nauseating.
anyone else hear the "yes! yes! yes" bit in emilia perez and think about that song from the phantom of the opera sequel where the phantom is asking the kid if he wants to see what's under the mask? i swear it's the same note
I’m sorry people feel the need to attack you when your opinions differ. I want to let you know that your thorough roast of Dear Evan Hansen is what brought me to your videos. Please don’t stop reviewing musicals!
Miller's Girl felt to me like someone read Oleanna by David Mamet and was like "That guy really gets it"
"... after their brain is done growing." Jesus Jenny, savage!
My train moment is in the evermore video where an actor says “wot??? A quest??? Ye mean like in fairy tales, rescuing a princess or slaying a dragon?”
Sadly, I kind of get it. If only we could live in a world where Jenny could take each of our own clearly bad and poorly thought out (but favorite) media and go, "I've done a lot of research and made a list of all the reasons this is actually good and everyone else is wrong!"
I love your "unpopular" opinions! Would love to hear what you liked :)
I'm so relieved to hear that you blocked the person who made an insane comment on the Mean Girls video, but I'm so sorry people like that are even on your Patreon. :( I'm excited for the Barbie video, whenever it comes!
Does anyone know what the comment said 👀
My train moment is the cats scene where it looks like Idris Elba rips his own fur off, but he’s actually taking off his coat, it’s the stuff of nightmares
My train moment would be the last scene of Denis Villeneuve's Enemy, I truly did recoil and covered my eyes because of the element of surprise (as I recall, absolutely nothing prepares you for it), as well as the fact that it triggered a really strong phobia I have. That said, it was very effective and left a long lasting impression on me, made me research a bit about what the movie was really about which made it even more interesting!
I truly thought Heretic was going to have some cool saw traps in it that Hugh Grant was gonna force those girls into. most disappointing movie of the year for me
I love it when my opinions differ from Jenny’s. Echo chambers can be relaxing, but they’re also stunting. Listening to others gives us a chance to learn and consider things we may not have on our own. Your thoughts may change, or gain nuance. And if your opinion stays the same, then nothing is lost. I love Brother Bear and I cherish Rutt and Toque. But I understand why Jenny doesn’t, and I can take a joke about fictional media without feeling invalidated. I’m still allowed to love the silly Moose, and I sure do.
Banger video as always jenny, sad how some people will never understand how funny it is to have people you vibe with simply not enjoying the stuff you love, every time you mention Atlantis i know there's some needling coming and it cracks me up
I'm so excited for the Barbie video!! On the parasocial thing, I get it because I genuinely do hate it whenever whatever YouTuber I like is slagging something else I like, like I remember seeing Mean Girls when it came out and telling all my friends I LOVED it so there's a bit of crow I have to eat when a bunch of youtubers go like "its dumb, and bad" because usually my friends trust their opinion over mine lol. But I usually just don't engage when there's a disconnect, usually I know why someone hates something I like and usually its for understandable reasons. But also that kind of fosters this atmosphere where people can't be negative about anything ever and that just also sucks. Live by the sword, die by the sword I say.
Sad that you couldn't be comfortable to be honest on your own patreon. I wish you luck.
My train moment was watching some 3D Shrek feature, I think on Shrek 2? Shrek dangles some spiders in your face and the 3D felt so realistic to me that I ripped off the glasses and stopped watching.
That sounds like one of the shorts they originally made for theme parks! Weirdly it was later put on a lot of streaming/cable networks' on demand libraries, often not even in 3D anymore
You rock Jenny! My train scene is the dream sequence in Jurassic Park 3 when Sam Neill wakes up on a plane that’s falling through the air and the camera pans to a hilarious talking velociraptor.
They did Shadow so good in Sonic 3. When he punches through the containment tube and lays out the whole room of armed guards??? Sheeeeeesh
Sorry you’re dealing with people being pushy and parasocial about you having different opinions. You’ve hated so many things I like but it doesn’t make me mad at you, I just like hearing your thoughts either way. Examples include: the Mean Girls musical AND musical movie, Navi River Journey, The Greatest Showman, Rogue One. It is what it is, I don’t need you to like everything I like.
The other thing that gets me is like ... okay, I am a massive, massive fan of the four "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, with "At World's End" probably being my favorite movie of all time. (We do not speak of the fifth movie. ;D) So when I saw that Jenny Nicholson -- whose video essay critiques I love -- posted a video that, FROM THE VIDEO TITLE, I could tell was going to be about how she doesn't much like the PotC films after the first one, I just ... did not watch that particular video. I just skipped it. I've never watched it. Because I knew I loved the movies too much to enjoy hearing from someone who did not like the movies. And so I didn't watch it. No need to click on the video and leave mean comments or be a jerk about it. All I had to do was not watch the video! Easy-peasy! And, like: I also liked The Greatest Showman, Rogue One, and even Solo -- and those videos of Jenny's I watched, because I was interested to hear a well-thought-out opinion with a different point of view. But if you REALLY love something, and you know -- FROM THE TITLE -- that a video essay is about what someone did NOT love about it, you can just ... not watch the video essay? And then you don't have to be mean about it? Because you can just skip it? ... that was a really long comment, but this particular thing drives me insane. It makes me think of Jenny's joke in her video about the first "Joker" movie that the people who clicked on that video were likely to be people who loved the movie who like to feel anger. Do those folks know they don't have to watch the video? They can just move on with their day?
i have a strong startle response when it comes to scary moments in movies, often because of the audio cues. some kinds of mounting tension just feel like intense anxiety to me. one of the first times i remember being viscerally afraid of a movie was 101 dalmatians when cruella is driving a car towards the end or something—her eyes are all stripy and scary in that scene, it always freaked me out as a toddler. i didn’t cry or run away from the tv tho that i can remember. we had a ripped copy of the hunchback of notre dame that ended up only being watched once i think, because little kid me and my younger siblings didn’t react well to it. i haven’t bothered to see it since so i’m not sure but that movie has a dark reputation, right? i think i probably didn’t like the religious persecution and… burning at the stake scene? public humiliation scene? i can’t believe i remember anything from that movie tbh. when i was 7 they were showing ET at the local theater and i did have to walk out of that… we had shown up to the movie late and i don’t even remember what freaked me out, but i’ve still never properly seen ET to this day. i may have walked out partially bc i had no idea wtf was happening anyway and didn’t like the idea of being chased. when the prisoner of azkaban came out i was afraid of the werewolf transformation scene. we watched it at my friend’s house and i only half-jokingly hid behind her couch… in the theater i was ok. i was like 9 by that point? definitely the beheading scene in hereditary. i saw it in theaters but knew beforehand something intense was going to happen so it wasn’t too bad? decapitation is still a lot tho. i felt very weird for a while after that movie. even nowadays i generally can’t handle horror. i don’t have the nervous system for it, ESPECIALLY if i’m watching the movie alone. i need someone to cling to lol. when it comes to psychologically difficult things that are like viscerally disgusting i can’t think of much, at least in movies and tv. there are moments in the manga berserk that affected me like that… oh, and i guess neon genesis evangelion, that’s a tv show that can disgust you sometimes (maybe it was the end of evangelion movie? don’t remember)
On the idea of an underage succubus character I think Alicia Silverstone in The Crush would fit the bill. I’m not entirely sure because I was never able to sit through the entire thing
My train moment is the severed head shot in Hereditary. After that movie was over the couple sitting next to me turned to ask if I was okay. I was not!
oh god i forgot about that. And when her husband catches fire.
Kinda breaks my heart to hear one of my favorite opinionated writers declare that she's begun avoiding certain genres (and even an entire medium) due to toxic pushback. I understand fully, and hope that your decisions lead to a better, happier life, but I also hope that you don't have to avoid these things forever.
sorry people are being weird jenny!! i also dropped everything and went straight from class to two malls trying to get shadow and but there was only two left by the time i got there, i guess there's just more cultured shadow fans in my area .
Thank you for the ramble, Jenny! Really glad to hear that you're ok with regards to the wildfires, and I'm so sorry about the parasocial lashback you've been experiencing. I hope you're able to take care of yourself and take in some of the messages of support here. To add another: I've been a subscriber since about 2018 and in that time there have definitely been things we've felt differently about, but I've still always appreciated and enjoyed hearing your perspective, particularly because it's always so well-evidenced, thoughtful, and articulate (and funny!). I'm pleased to hear you're enjoying the Barbie project again but I look forward to watching whatever you bring us next!
(I was going to do a bit pretending to be a passionate fan of Megalopolis personally offended by your harsh take but was worried it might be a bit gauche/get misconstrued. but can you imagine. I'm sure they must exist...)
I’m sorry people are weird about your opinions! I love hearing you dissect things, whether I agree or not!
Kind of the reverse of the discussion question that also ties into this video topic: watching Defying Gravity in cinemas for the first time. It was one of the most hyped-up excited feelings I’ve ever had, I felt my pulse racing and I literally felt like I was floating up off my chair towards the screen 😳😳
That part in the movie made me feel like that too, though it was also mixed with the feeling of DESPERATELY needing to piss, so I wonder how that aspect might have effected exactly what my body felt.
the beginning of Miller's Girl is soo funny because it repeatedly emphasises that she's 18. Like don't worry guys it's ok!!! She's 18 that makes it fine!! rip
Amy the only girl? What about Tails? Of course, I'm kidding. Sorta...
why are you bleeding so much
my 'train scene' was the spider mother scene in Coraline, watched in 3D as a kid - a bad choice on my part but honestly, the whole movie unsettles me and to this day, I can't watch stop motion animation without getting irrationally upset and scared/uncomfortable
My train scene was from the 2002 Spider-Man, when Mary Jane wakes up on the ruined bridge and almost steps backwards off of it while she's still disoriented. I pressed my entire body against the back of the seat and grabbed my friend's hand so hard I probably left marks. I've been afraid of heights my whole life, but I have *never* had that kind of visceral reaction to another scene.
My train scene was Dennis Quaid eating shrimp in The Substance. So viscerally upsetting and somehow worse than all of the actual gore in that movie 🤢
Omg that’s such a good one, totally agree, that was the part I had to cover my eyes for lol
Glad you are safe in spite of all the craziness Jenny! So pumped for the Barbie video. My scene was the bathtub scene from saltburn! The instant I figured out what was about to happen I started to tweak out.
Discussion question: tbh the last 1/3rd of the movie Night of The Hunter (1955). It's about a priest getting out of prison after overhearing a fellow inmate talk about how he's leaving his robberys' treasure with his children. The priest finds the children, infiltrates their family by slowly turning their mother devout before killing her, leaving him with sole custody of them. He tries to torture the treasure's location out of them, and the whole time the people in the community know they're being hurt and are doing nothing. Eventually they're able to escape, and the whole time you're watching these kids run for their lives for miles and miles, there's just this horrible malice following them as he hunts them, everything silent except for his whistling. Near the end you think he's been caught by authorities, but he shows up at their foster parents' house bloodied and deranged. I won't spoil the ending bc it's def a movie everyone should (if the content isn't triggering) see at least once, bc it is Very effective filmmaking. But also it is YUCKY AND I HATE IT
Absolutely wonderful movie, great recommendation.
I can’t believe Jenny agreed with Ben Shapiro. She’s changed… 😔
Re the discussion question: I absolutely have a 'train coming at the screen moment,' and it happened in Disney World. It was the first time I ever went, and I was like four or five years old, so young but old enough that I should have known how movies work. At that time, Pluto was my absolute favorite character, he was the only character I really wanted to meet. I couldn't find him anywhere. We even went to a character breakfast he was supposed to be at, but for some reason, he was out of the rotation. Cut to the last day of the trip when I was on Muppet*Vision 3D. At the end of the ride the penguins 'shoot a canon' at the screen and blow a hole in the wall and you can see out into the park. And Pluto is out in the park. I got so excited because I thought I finally found him and made my family like rush off the ride. We get outside and no Pluto. At which point I stop to think and realize that was just footage of the park because obvious they did not blow a hole in the back of Muppet*Vision 3D. I don't know why I thought that Pluto would be out there. It's not like I thought the explosion was real or that they really fired a cannon. But for some reason I was just like 'and then they do a ride trick and unveil a window.' Like totally did not occur to me. And my family was looking at me all disappointed and confused about why I insisted we hurry out. And my mom asked what was wrong and I refused to tell her because I felt dumb.
Also sorry people are weird and you don't feel comfortable voicing your opinions on movies. That sounds exhausting.
Also, my friend and I bought beanie babies today. I'm eagerly awaiting your rating of Glow, my new best friend.
I saw Deep Blue Sea on opening weekend and the conclusion of the inspiring speech made everyone jump
Omg it hurts my heart that you feel like you can't just express your opinions!!! You are so witty and smart, but I totally understand how the internet has made expressing yourself taboo. I and many others love your content/interests, and I hope you feel that!!!
discussion question: the jean jacket scene in nope messed me up really badly 😭 for some reason that’s a very specific phobia i’ve had for a while
if you’re talking about the scene where it eats all those people then omg yes!!!!! i was literally on the verge of throwing up while watching it and my body was shaking for like 30 minutes after 😭😭😭😭😭 im so glad i didn’t watch it in theaters because i think i would’ve actually had a panic attack
I can't even remember the name of the horror movie, but it's about a woman fleeing an abusive partner. There is a scene where the woman has slipped out the door, run through the woods, and made it to the car she's got stashed. There's no score at all, just the sound of her labored breathing as she leans against the steering wheel and tries to center herself. Through the driver side mirror we can see her husband sprinting from the tree line directly at her car, but she doesn't notice until he slams into the car and finally starts screaming at her. The slight sound of his feet hitting the asphalt while she is curled in on herself haunted me for literal months
Was it Invisible Man, with Elisabeth Moss?
My train scene is from just now when Jenny said there was a moment in the Dear Evan Hansen movie when Evan and his mom almost open mouth kiss.
My train scene is, and I admit this is not at all what you meant, I have this very strong urge to stand up and leave the room when I hear the Star Wars ending theme. I assume it comes from watching the original trilogy in theatres and how that music symbolises it being time to leave. It’s not like I saw the movies many times in the theatre just this weird urge I’ve felt most of my life.
Train question: the last act of beau is afraid was the only time i thought id throw up watching a film. That said, im not sure why? I dont think i was feeling fear, i think it was something more visceral that struck me so suddenly it caused physical discomfort. Saw it with a big group of friend. Best way to watch it imo, we are bonded forever.
My “train scene” is unquestionably the C-section of the alien baby in Prometheus. A woman is unknowingly impregnated by someone sneaking an alien liquid into her drink. She’s about to have a pseudo-chestburster creature thing burst out of her, but gets on this automatic surgery table thing that surgically pulls it out just in time. The visual of the squid baby crazily writhing above her cut-open abdomen while she struggles to get off the table and away from it made me shut my laptop for a while and just walk around my room in blank shock.
Aw, man, I hate that you feel so pressured by parasocial watchers. I find anything you say about all kinds of media very interesting, and I'll always look forward to watching. :)
my first train scene was definitely John Carroll Lynch jumping into lava to save a guy in Volcano. In my defense I was 11, but I threw my hands up over my face and started sobbing. Most recently the, what do you call it, the "voodoo doll" dance scene in the Suspiria remake.
Man I’m just sad people are jerks and also it sucks that you have to worry about people tracking down your house :(
I hate to sound so parasocial but I get so sad when she talks about hate comments 😭 I mean, it's one thing to FEEL that way about someone's content, but saying it out loud? On patreon??? I just hate knowing someone who consistently spoon feeds us hours of enjoyable content has to stress over such self involved pissant type criticisms. Thank you for everything you create & post, Jenny. I promise, FAR more of us are silent & grateful than bitchy & loud!
I don't think that aspect is too "parasocial". It's just sad to hear about anyone getting put down for a stupid reason, even if you don't know them well.
jenny please tell me you have seen this video on the "hottest female sonic characters": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxGGMYZqJhk (this video is my train scene moment. ik it's not a movie but STILL)
i think she talked about it in the top 10 youtube videos patreon vid
A memorable cinema experience but technically not the film itself for me was seeing Us, where as the lights came up the cinema staff had put on Tethered costumes so for a split second it was like, "did I just have a mental blank and think that was a film"? I don't know if this was something that a lot of cinemas did as an organised thing as opposed to just this one cinema but it was effective.
By now, I'm sure that somewhere within these 300+ comments are references to 'Poison Ivy' (1992), with Drew Barrymore and Tom Skerritt, 'The Crush' (1993), with Alicia Silverstone and Cary Elwes, and 'Devil in the Flesh' (1998) with Rose McGowan, all of which are thrillers involving a teenage girl obsessed with an adult man. I'm certain there have to be others. 'Poison Ivy' -- which was something of an indie/Sundance darling at the time, was directed by a woman, and was almost retro (even in '92) in its exploitation-film stylings -- was followed-up with a bunch of straight-to-video sequels, about which I know nothing. For all I know the antagonists in those films are elderly and the films are about perfectly healthy relationships between age appropriate partners. Nonetheless, there are a whole bunch of 'Poison Ivy' films, and they used to be on cable all the time. Also, there absolutely is 'Candyman' merch, including t-shirts large enough to wear to bed, were one so inclined.
My primal jumpscare moment was Poor Things, but more specifically the immediate cut from the “she has a baby brain” reveal immediately followed by on screen masturbation by the same character who is also doing a pretty terrible disabled person baby voice… had to leave the cinema because I was so viscerally disgusted
Good god. I want to put my phone down and go for a walk after just reading hour description of that scene
My "train" moment is from Cats where the camera comes round the corner to see Sir Ian McKellan lapping milk out of a bowl. Unfortunately with the framing, the weird licking and his hunched posture it felt like walking in on a relative with dementia.
Girl I also just finally bought the bibble purse these week?? What are the odds!! I’m just missing the sweet dreams one now
In MALIGNANT (2021), about seven minutes in, our main character comes home from the hospital after a miscarriage to her husband watching the game. They have a brief argument during which he says “How many times do I have to watch my children die inside you?” and my jaw hit the floor. He gets gruesomely killed three minutes later, very satisfying, but I had leapt halfway out of my seat at that line.
My train scene is in the animated movie “I lost my body”. A hand with no body is on a quest to search for itself and slowly reconstruct the memories of its life. The moment it shows how the hand was lost is terrifying because it’s so realistic and an acquaintance in uni almost lost hers the same way (vertical saw) and there’s a long buildup in which I kept sweating and going “nonononono that’s unsafe don’t do that nonononono”.
I really didn't like Kinds of Kindness. I might have to watch it again
That really sucks the way some people can get so defensive about properties they like, it's crazy. Sorry you feel the need to self-censor, wish it weren't so, your controversial takes are my favourite ones! lol
It's really frustrating because I feel like it's a vocal minority just ruining it for the rest of us
Please also send out a notification when Youtube mirrored drops I will forget to watch otherwise 🥲
It's out btw!
technically not a movie, but my train scene was during the announcement of the cast for the Mario movie. My friends and I were all yelling at the top of our lungs because we could not handle the thought of Chris Pratt voicing Mario
My train scene is that film Blank Check, when the little dude kisses the older woman in a legitimately romantic way I WAS SO UNCOMFORTABLE I ACTUALLY SQUIRMED AND STARTED SCREAMING - does anyone remember this film? It's not filmed at all as 'oh, older woman humouring a six year old', she is legitimately flirting with him it is so fucking weird and out of nowhere in this innocent kids film
I REMEMBER OH MY GOD!!!! What a terrible movie. I took a screenwriting class in college and my professor BRAGGED THAT HE WAS THE GUY WHO WROTE THE MOVIE BLANK CHECK AND I FLIPPED TF OUT like that is NOT a flex
The Trap disrespect is crazy
The anger over different takes on movies is wildddddd. Like one of my favourite ever videos is Jenny bashing escape from tomorrow and like... I liked the movie and found it fun? If I already have identical thoughts to someone, why am I listening to them instead of just riffing to myself in my own brain??? My train moment was basically the entire film Monkey Man. My friend really wanted me to see it with her because of the important commentary on politics in India but the graphic violence and unsteady camera angles were so viscerally disturbing I had to hold onto my chair to keep from physically running away.
Screeching into the void cuz I can't watch without a YouTube mirror 😔
To be fair I (20, Sonic Fan) watched it with someone else (22, Not Sonic Fan) and they liked it about as much as I did, we both had a great time. I do obviously agree you're definitely *more* likely to enjoy it if you're a Sonic fan and that's just an example of one person but I don't think it's a binary "you'll only like it if you're a Sonic fan." Also I'm really curious if you have any ideas on how they're going to adapt Sonic CD given it's teasing Amy and Metal Sonic.
My train scene is the one in Looper when they start removing body parts from the past version of a character and it shows up on the future version of that character. Terrifying.
Great post! - you look great, sound great, your opinions are great, this patreon is great! :-) The word "great" really looks strange now...
I, animated Barbie movie collector, am thrilled for the Barbie video and also want a Bibble purse
Yoooo this is such a fun video! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Sorry people get weird and mean and personal about your opinions. The first time I majorly disagreed with you about something you shared in a video was Mamma Mia, and honestly I did have that knee jerk ick feeling you described. But like, that was dumb. Like, really dumb and defensive for no earthly legitimate reason. I had to check that parasocial impulse and remember that like... it's not that deep, in every sense of the phrase. Anyway, thanks again for rambling at us every month. It's a joy to listen to you share your thoughts.
It’s funny there’s a US movie where the school feels weirdly British. Because Sex Education (which I quite like) is meant to be set in a British Secondary school but Moordale really feels like a classic fictionalised American high school. With lockers, counsellors, and being at the centre of life this small Welsh town in a way our Secondary schools aren’t. Ps If you want to get a version of what British comprehensive schools are like check out Waterloo Road or from the 1980s and 90s Grange Hill.
my train-scene regarding CATS (2019) is that I watched it for the first time in late march 2020 and was already like 10 days into not seeing people, so when I paused the movie to go to the bathroom I got jumpscared by my own reflection because I had forgotten what human beings are supposed to look like
They’re not usually as dramatic as life in Grange Hill though!
I’m so glad that you like Wicked and Sonic 3; I’m sorry that people are weird and parasocial to you, I don’t agree with everything you say but I’m always open to hearing your perspective
My niece cannot pronounce Build-A-Bear. She always calls it Bibble Bear.
Hi Jenny, thank you so much for another great video! I’m so sorry that people can get so nasty when it comes to your opinions :( they need to get over themselves
I think your hair and makeup look really great, Jenny!
For what it’s worth, one of the things I love about your content is that when you have an opinion, you back it up so thoroughly. So even when I disagree, I leave feeling content, because I completely understand where you’re coming from. I was hoping Madame Web would make the worst media moments list. I genuinely like the movie, and everyone else in the world hates it, but they never explain why. They just say, “It’s bad, it’s so bad,” and then they stop talking. Maybe it’s bad, but I want to know why. I can rely on you to support your opinion, and that’s why I love your content. This isn’t me trying to curry favor. I just wanted to let you know that there are some of us out here who really appreciate your work.
I can't back up the Madame Web thing, having not seen it, but from hearing it described on God Awful Movies (they usually do religious movies, but it was a Patreon bonus episode) it just sounded kind of boring? Like it's not offensively bad, but nothing about it sticks out as particularly good?
I know it comes with the territory, but it makes me very sad when I hear a creator having to be so wary of their fans.
I went to see sonic 3 with my boyfriend, but he's a little older than me so for him sonic music is like, emerald hill, so he didn't understand why I was so incredibly hyped when they played live and learn hahaha
My train coming towards the screen moment- so I am terrified of bees. Number one fear, nothing comes close, they really scare me. When I saw Wicked I saw it in 3D. Most of the trailers before are in standard, but the last trailer was for the lion king prequel movie and it was also in 3D. So I have the glasses on, watching 3D CGI lions, and all of a sudden there’s a bee moment in the trailer. Where like they broke a nest and 3D bees were coming at me. It caught me completely off guard and was horrifying. I whipped off my glasses so fast. I also assume the train story is an urban legend but if it’s real, I understand
It baffles me that anyone would have an issue with how you criticize things. The way you approach reviewing things is so chill and conversational it’s odd that anyone would take issue with it.
Like why engage with media where someone is blatantly expressing their opinion if you can’t handle someone expressing their opinion.
Also I can't think of any movie that gave me that visceral reaction, but when playing the Silent Hill 2 Remake last year, when I got to the Angela sequence and tilted the camera upward... yeah. If you know, you know.
The juxtaposition of you talking about bad horror moments while experiencing your finger bleeding through three BandAids 🩹 both cracked me up and made me concerned for your finger. Also, I don’t have to deal with online trolls, but I hate so much that they’re creepy enough to make you censor yourself!!!
Also I love the she did the welcome opening THREE times. Hilarious.
My train moment is in the Natalie Portman film Annihilation when the skeletal bear creature rips one of the scientists face off. No thank you.
I don't get like, SCARED scared in movies very often but holy cow that bear scene 😭
Very happy to hear that Jenny is a fellow Lisa Ortiz enjoyer. Love her Amy, though for me she'll always be Lina.
I didn't know build a bear had shadow until after the movie and I was devastated - I ended up snagging the last shadow plush at my local target
The only train scene I can think of rn is when I was watching the Defunctland video on Animatronics Pt 1 and I’d been laughing while horrified over the repeated statements about some animatronic where they’d used real human skin for the hand. Then later in the episode, they discussed materials for making skin more lifelike and I jumped because I kept expecting them to say they used real human skin again. They didn’t. But my daughter and I started laughing hysterically because I kept expecting it.
I went into watching Trap absolutely hoping it to be so stupid and bad and I got exactly what I wanted. I left Imaginary thinking "I didn't like this at all but I love we're making new starter horror for kids." I thought Wicked was fantastic agree on almost all points but they really messed up Defying Gravity, no defending that choice imo. My favorite movie of the year was I Saw the TV Glow (Substance strong second). My train moment of recent memory is from Infinity Pool in the acid trip sequence where something is being squeezed. Absolutely turned my stomach.
I've got a few other contenders (Anora, A Real Pain for a couple) for film of the year but I watched I Saw The TV Glow on Hallowe'en and I've been kind of thinking about it ever since. I know it's mostly been interpreted as a trans allegory, but I think alongside that it also works for depression and mental health issues.
I’ve definitely seen a lot of YouTubers who are critical of things run into that same problem where when people share their same opinion of something then they’re a great really insightful reviewer, but then the second they dislike something the viewers like they’re cruel and evil and everyone hates them. It’s just so exhausting to deal with, and I don’t really get the expectation that someone will always agree with you.
*wearing my Candyman t-shirt* I do agree it's hard to sleep in horror film t-shirts because I bought a "mystery pack" from Cavity Colors and got such a scary t-shirt of Pennywise from IT that I have to wear it backwards. Also my most visceral reaction to a film was Tusk by Kevin Smith. No one takes me seriously when I say I can't watch Tusk but I guess the idea of a human walrus is the scariest thing I can ever imagine or witness. If I could go back in time just once it would be to make sure Tusk doesn't exist.
My train scene is oddly specific but I remember in the Kung Fu Panda tv series there is a scene where the praying mantis (I forget his name) but he jumps out of a well towards the screen and I seriously thought he was coming for me. Watched it multiple times and knew it was coming but always got to me.
This is a somewhat niche answer to the discussion question but I saw Inland Empire in theaters as my very first Lynch film a couple years ago. The scene where Laura Dern's character is sitting talking with the homeless people while actively bleeding out (somehow this isn't a spoiler, this movie is so strange that I'm not even sure how one would spoil it) got to me on such a visceral level that a physically got up, left the theater, and did not re-enter. I stood outside in the rain, shaking, and called my girlfriend at the time for 45 minutes while I waited for the movie to end because I was with friends who were still watching it. I finished it as soon as I got home and genuinely really enjoyed the movie, and tbh the fact that it elicited such a strong emotional response is a testament to that! Also when I tell people who have seen the movie that I left more than 2/3rds of the way through they assume it's the singe jump scare in the movie that got to me. This scene happens before the jump scare so I'd already left, and if I'd been in the theater when it had happened I think I would have started crying. 10/10 would recommend.
Omg, I just watched Inland Empire for the first time a couple days ago and have been absolutely obsessed; that exact scene, but when the camera pans out to show the film crew felt like a gutpunch. It's such a disorienting rabbit hole that it's hard to say any specific moments are what blew me away but the back to back of that, her watching the screen on the theater, the phantom, the whole ending sequence completely blew me away
My train moment might actually have been The Substance, when Elisabeth sees her wizened old self in the mirror. Just like a full-body rejection of what I was seeing. Also people getting on your case about not agreeing with them are straight up weirdos . Not always agreeing with creators you enjoy (or like, people in your life) about media is such a normal and necessary part of the human experience
For me It was in the goosebumps movie. The character is in a hospital (i think) and is being chased slowly by this monster he just cant get away from. It eventually catches him and sort of hug absorbs him. That moment when they hug happens set me on edge in the worst way.
My primal reaction story at the movies is with the first Scream movie. During that first scene with Drew Barrymore who's home alone and suddenly realizes there's someone lurking, then that that person is a killer and she's their target, she goes outside, thinks she's going to escape and then from the garden looking in, she sees him turn around and face her through the window from inside the house. As a kid, my number one nightmare was home invasion. That entire opening scene was my worst nightmare being shown to me, so that moment when they are face to face and he's already inside the house, I had a primal "ALL IS LOST!!!" reaction (as if I was her) and from that point on became a fan of Scream.
I love it in Cinderella Story when it shows the cgi raindrop fall through the sky onto Hilary Duff
Sorry I'm just excited since everyone seems to take it as fact for some reason!! Anyways my personal train scene was when Dame Judy Dench Cat looked directly into my eyes for 10 straight minutes at the end of Cats (2019) and I burrowed into my seat like a mouse to get away.
Okay but your suspicion re: Train Scene is 100% correct!! I wrote an essay about early film in college and couldn't find a single primary source for the "audience becomes terrified by the train" idea, it started popping up like 20-30 years later as this weird "back in my day" kind of anecdote to contrast the supposed naivety of the first movie audiences with the relative sophistication of someone watching, like, Buster Keaton or something. Also "The Arrival of the Train at La Ciotat" was placed in the middle of a program of dozens of similar shorts, so the idea of someone understanding "oh OK these kids are playing with a hose and not really here, these factory workers aren't going to walk off the wall and into the room" then going "oh SACRE BLEU a TRAIN" makes like NO sense to me.
My "Train" moment was a somewhat recent horror film "Caveat" I watched on Shudder. Really excellent and tense horror film- overall a strong directorial debut by Damian McCarthy. There's a scene where the main character is attempting to saw his way out of a wall, but the hole is located next a body he's DEFINITELY seen moving. His torso obscures the corpse's face most of the time until he pulls away and you just see it STARING AT him out of the corner of its eye. One of the few horror movies I've had to actively pause or skip through Edit: For anyone who maybe interested look up "Caveat Drummer Bunny" and if it's your kind of horror. I definitely recommend it!
that guy's other movie Oddity had a lot of moments that I had to squint at the screen to blur anything that might happen, Damian McCarthy is good at this
i find the idea of being upset that jenny had an opinion i disagree with bizarre because i agree with her takes like MAYBE one out of three times?? like it's fun, she sees the world in a different way to me and then sort of explains her viewpoint and that's interesting
My train scene is the final shot of sleepaway camp. I thought that movie was so dang boring and was nearly tuned out but then was so viscerally shocked at the twist and startled by that freaky face they make. And my name is angela which in my experience is kind of uncommon so to hear my name so many times added to the freakiness
Apparently the poor actress who played Angela spent forever in sittings while they made the model of that rictus scream face. I also freaked OUT when I saw it and I knew the twist ending!
yeah parasocial relationships are the worst. CATERPIE 【AMV】 CREEP is your best take ever and if you ever turned your back on him i would unfollow and bash you on your own patreon. Thank god my own ideas aren't being challenged by your hot takes about wicked. /s
i don’t know if it’s the exact same feeling but the complete visceral and full body reaction i felt watching amanda getting pushed into the vat of needles in saw 2 has never left my brain
I was hoping you would mention the part on Night Swim where (SPOILER) the dad is possessed by the evil pool and chases the daughter around the house and saying “Marco” then sneaks up on her and screams “YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SAY POLO” 👻
Fun to imagine Jenny repping Candyman with the late, great Tony Todd's face smeared across a cheap tshirt.
In Get Out, there's a scene where the "groundskeeper" is running straight at Chris in the dark and I remember when I first saw it I was so viscerally terrified I couldn't move.
There's this movie based on a Stephen King book that I can't watch. I watched it because a friend said the way I described my brain reminded them of a scene in this movie. So expected trauma or something but there's a scene where a guy (in my mind it's Paul Rudd) is "infiltrated" while on top of the toilet by a worm thing. He leans over to pick something up and I got so sad and scared that it ruined the movie for me forever. The next time we see him is gory but him dropping a toothpick (i think) in the bathroom and being forced to pick it up cuz of mental illness just really got me as a young undiagnosed person.
Joker 2 really felt it was trolling, from the lack of thematic cohesion in the animated intro to the stupidly pointless ending. I so was hyped for Gaga too. I allowed my friend’s enthusiasm for Sonic is pump me up for Sonic 3. I had to catch up: Wednesday night I watched Sonic. Then I woke up started the second one, got home from work and finished it, then got picked up for the third. I watched them all in under 24 hours! It was a lot of fun! But also, yes, I definitely wasn’t connecting with it like my friend was. 😅 But I’m ready for 4! I don’t have a specific train moment, but prodding under fingernails effects me strongly, or the awful father-son dynamic in Shine - which did cause me to pace around the room I was so mad. I also could mention when you dissed Buffy at the end of the VPD video. I was so taken aback! Legendary. I also have a positive train moment if that’s a thing: the ending of American Pop had me standing I was so jazzed.
oh my god the comment you went on a tangent about incensed me enough to reply which i never do on patreon but i thought it was so weird and dumb. for the reasons stated, but also because a video essay needs a thesis. if you’re not arguing anything or unearthing something obscure or strange it’s just uninteresting. if you genuinely thought it was good and were arguing against the mass opinion, it would still come across as disagreement!! even if the video was a general review, it’s literally just the nature of being a critic or writing a critical analysis in any medium. if reading or watching criticism is too “negative” for you then like… yeah don’t consume any media criticism i guess?? i was so baffled lol
i think boiling it down to “you disagree with me now so you’re too negative” is spot on. because the nature of an interesting critical analysis is disagreement with choices or with reception, or comparative where one example didn’t do as well, etc. but i also think it has to do with being a woman, certain people have limited goodwill for anything perceived as less than polite, including even a widely held criticism. i get mad thinking about that comment again and it wasn’t even directed at me lol
Were you by any chance thinking of the train thing because you saw this cool_cammy YouTube short? https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HmbKG4_xc5I
I’m sorry people have been so annoying on you having differing opinions to them, honestly being able to see someone intelligently disagree with you might make some people feel insecure about their own intelligence. I gotta be honest, I like aspects of the Mean Girls musical, the movie was pretty bad but like some songs and even how Reneé Rapp portrayed Regina, I liked hearing your side of it cause it gave me a different view to contrast mine. It really blows that you have some kids on here who take stuff like that to heart, and I know this won’t make them disappear, but know that there are people here who love hearing your hot takes. I think I’m just frustrated that the others had to ruin it for those of us who wanna hear it.
Yeah I feel exactly the same. Jenny please keep giving us those unpopular opinions! Always here for them.
I don't know if this counts as a movie train moment, but I was channel hopping once and came across that scene from Beetlejuice where I think the main character is about to marry Beetlejuice (I think? I don't know the plot) and the couple I assumed were her parents but are apparently just the former owners of the house loom in the background looking distraught, and there was just this wave of absolute horror and disgust crashing over me, and I have no explanation as to why. I assume I must have seen parts of this movie as a small child and been actually traumatized and just blocked the whole thing off, bc there was no other earthly reason a twenty-something would react so strongly to something like that. Also the scene from Moomins where Moomintroll accidentally transforms into an aye-aye. If you're Finnish, you will know the scene.
Nah, child marriage is pretty terrifying. I don't blame you.
My train moment is definitely in “Mulholland Drive” when they go to see what’s behind the diner - one of my favorite movies and I still can’t watch these few seconds! 🫣
It goes without saying that I hope you do what makes you comfortable, but I wanted to chime in and say that I - and many others - actively like when someone has a different perspective on media! It’s so interesting, and I like to hear their reasoning because it makes me think about things more critically and evaluate a different side (and this is especially true with your content because you really have a talent for explaining yourself well). I’m sure the loud angry voices get annoying and tiresome, but I hope you know that there are lots of us who support you regardless. We are here to actually listen to what you have to say about things, and not just for someone to reinforce our fragile viewpoint. The few people who you do end up losing - because they angrily demand identical opinions - aren’t really a loss. If anything, it’s probably an overwhelmingly positive thing, but I do understand choosing to do what’s right for you - it’s your channel after all. With that said I appreciate you bringing it up (maybe some will get the hint?), and I hope that their entitlement ultimately doesn’t take away from your freedom of expression and creative fulfillment. Absolutely love your content and the multitude of opinions within (in a really very super non-parasocial way, please don’t ban me)
And for proof: I don’t like Disneyland (or even theme parks), I’ve never liked a Star Wars movie, and I’ve never purchased merch for anything ever (seriously, please don’t ban me)
28 days later, a drop of blood falls into Frank's eye. I flinched. I have seen the film plenty times, rewatched it recently. That moment is upsetting and I'm a pretty reactive viewer, not unusual for me to look away or cover my face. But partly it was the the visual of a drop falling towards his eye that got me like a train coming for the movie screen.
Yes, agree on this!
I kind of have 2 visceral moments one worse than the other. The first was when I was watching the first season of American horror story and they put the dog in the microwave and I literally screamed. I actually had to turn the tv fully off and take a lap. I did not finish the season or the show. The other was when I started the show Yellowjackets and I didn’t even read the description of the show (my two biggest icks are airplanes and cannibalism….im not kidding ). Needless to say I lasted an episode and a half.
Jenny, I’m old enough to be your grandfather so commenting feels a little creepy. But I just want you to know that although I don’t always agree with you, I love listening to your take on things. For example, your incredibly detailed take down of Dear Evan Hansen was one of the most entertaining things I’ve ever seen. Please screen out the haters, there are people out here that you would never imagine as your audience who love what you do.
One of the things I like about Jenny is she makes me feel like I care about the things she talks about. I don't care about Star Wars, Disney, animated movies, plush, theme parks, CW shows etc. etc. But when I watch her videos - I feel it. I briefly get carried along and feel like yeah, yeah I do care about theme parks. No, I don't find them boring and manufactured. It'd totally be cool to watch an animatronic space dinosaur with invisible friends sing timed to a pre-recorded track over and over! I come to my senses later but she really does have an ability to make me feel like I care about the things she cares about.
Jenny I'm so sorry about that comment! hate what you want queen
that hat is so cute
What hat?
My train scene is the jumpscare in Wait Until Dark. I'd watched it in film studies a long time ago and was re-watching it on my laptop while recovering from gum surgery. I don't know what happened; I wasn't that tense, I knew it was coming, and then he lunged out of the dark at her and I made a noise somewhere between a roar and a wail and lurched backwards into the couch, and my husband came barreling out, terrified I'm sure that it was something to do with my gums, but no. Movie, sorry. Thought the bad guy was gonna get ME, no big deal. Speaking of my husband, I DO recommend going to Sonic Movies even if you're not a knowledgeable fan if you can sit NEXT to a mega fan and listen to their happy gasps every time something from the games happens. He was excruciatingly adorable the entire time and I haven't had a more delightful moviegoing experience in recent memory. PS- The train story is absolutely fake. Jacob Geller has a video about it and similar tall tales, titled "The Men Who Couldn't Stop Crying and other Unbearable Realities."
My train moment this year was watching Speak No Evil in theatres and viscerally wanting to yell at the characters!
oh also my train moment is that i came really really close to full on puking during the last act of the substance. like fully dry heaving into my popcorn bag
great movie btw
Hi Jenny, this is more related to last month’s topic, but I was wondering if you had any strong opinions about the musical Hadestown. It has just been announced they are filming a pro shot with the OBC at West End. I saw the show on Broadway in August. It was my first ever Broadway show, and I fell instantly in love with it. I kept thinking about it for weeks, listening to the cast recording for hours. I just saw the show again in January right before two leads switched. To me, Hadestown is so full of thematic depth and rich lyrics. Timeless.
Oh man, watching The Wire with my mom (the movie about the high-wire artist walking between the Twin Towers; starred Joseph Gorden Levitt). An okay film, but oh my god, those high-wire scenes... both my mom and I are scared of heights and were crawling up our seats in sheer terror, lmao
agree that the second part of kinds of kindness is the best but i also think i liked that movie more than most people. it's one of those things where whenever i hear a criticism of that movie i usually like. objectively agree with it??? but i feel like i just haven't seen enough Actually Weird Movies to have a developed taste so the whole time i was just going yay yippee it's unpleasant and jesse plemons is here wahoo
I literally just watched a movie called Gentlemen Broncos and there is a point where the male lead projectile vomits and then the female lead kisses him directly on the mouth, and then they proceed with the scene while they both have vomit on their mouths. I audibly shrieked and assumed a fetal position while covering my eyes. Also, this video showed me that we need more Jenny horror content!
Best comparison I can think of for Miller's Girl would be The Crush from 93. Definitely remember similar beats.
Oops sorry meant to write a lot more so here's an edit lol. I watched Alyssa Grenfell's analysis of Heretic (she is an ex-Mormon) and apparently as a Mormon missionary it is somewhat plausible that they would ignore red flags like that if the person seems interested. It's really interesting imo. not sure if it's your cup of tea but here's a link for anyone interested (I hope that's not against the rules please delete if so): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5wpy7ZGfK4&t=3176s Easier said than done but I hope you can tune out the haters! A lot of us understand where you're coming from and totally appreciate you
This is underwhelming but my train moment is that I always feel real cold when a character is shivering outside in winter. In Nosferatu my husband laughed at me because my teeth were literally chattering a bit when it was snowy on screen lol
My train moment was in Cats (2019) when it legitimately looked like Jason Derulo was gonna put Victoria's toes in his mouth. I screamed a tiny little "no!" in the theater.
hearing you say people get weird whenever they disagree with what you say is so WILD to me. I usually have the experience of I disagree with what you say at first, but then come around to you most of the time lol. For example I’ve always liked the songs in the mean girls musical (never seen it; just liked the music) and after hearing your critiques of the songs I was like damn you are so right lmfao. imma still listen to them tho cuz some of them are bangers. lovely video as always!
For the record, there *is* a lot of candyman merch lol
also i love that your top media moment was sonic 3 cus that movie was SO good
I think my train moment is when I saw twilight breaking dawn pt 2 for the first time and they actually start slaughtering everyone although by that point i was a bit out of my twilight phase so the initial shock was quickly followed by joy and then later disappointment that they didn't actually commit to carlisle having his head ripped off
great answer
My train scene was the entirety of "In the Mouth of Madness." I became aware about halfway through that I had pulled my jacket up around me and curled into a ball in my seat. I very rarely react like that to movies, but for some reason that one did it.
I love that movie! It's got a great dreamlike vibe
OMG, I actually *do* own Candyman merch. I bought a t-shirt with a stylized drawing of him and the new movie’s logo printed on it in a Hot Topic during its theater run on impulse and now I Just Have That I Guess.
DQ: The donkey scene in Triangle of Sadness didn’t make me jump as much as it just made me plug my ears and curl up so I couldn’t see the screen but it was very unpleasant
Jenny was a certified hater in the first half of the video. lol I loved it!
This is kinda cheating because it applies to all such scenes and even in real life, but I can't watch the blood transfusion scene in Bram Stoker's Dracula. I have to look up and away and clench my jaw or I start to feel faint. Dracula biting someone and drinking blood? Fine. No effect. But as soon as veins and the idea of passing blood out of and then into the body are involved, my brain gives the hardest nope and I must away. Hell, even that one bit in Twilight (number 4, I think? or is it 5?) where Bella has to comically sip blood out of a Styrofoam takeout cup using a straw-- that gets me. Maybe it's tubes? Maybe I just don't like blood and tubes? Or the idea I'm partially made of bloody tubes? Ew. (Also, Jenny, I really hope you again feel comfortable sharing your hottest of takes sometime in the future. I love hearing your opinions on stuff, whether or not I or the ~cultural consensus~ happen to agree. Stay strong, stay not-on-fire, and stay you!)
And her middest takes!
Ugh I remember seeing that comment (that caused the parasocial rant) on the last video and thinking it was such a weird take...please know most of your patreons don't think like that! this video gave me lots of horror movies to look up plot summaries on wikipedia (too much of a scaredy cat to actually watch them but I like to know what people are talking about)
RE: the last question it is in Hereditary when the huge sad terrible scene happen with the daughter, alex wolff and toni collette’s screams of agony
Sam from Trick r Treat!
Tikal was such a cool character to me. I was always sad they didn't keep bringing her back like they did with Shadow and Rouge.
LMAO i totally forgot about megalopolis until you brought it up. i also saw it in theaters and thought it was bad but tbh it was enjoyable bad imo like fun to watch but not a good movie. love these rambles!!
train scene for me was the racist mail order bride stuff in adventures of priscilla queen of the desert, especially when she starts her “performance.” made me feel sick
Great ramble but the parasocial thing was a bummer like wtf why can't people have differing opinions and be civil about it?! Really hope it doesn't stop you from expressing yourself Jenny 😞
Oh yeah so I don't have a specific train scene moment but I'm super clumsy and I've broken both arms and legs in four separate accidents throughout my life, so anytime a character on screen falls I have to turn away! Even hearing the THUD they make when they hit the ground or whatever makes me anxious.

What Patreon level gets "Jenny's secret cut film opinions"? Seriously, that sucks to get harangued that way.
There’s a found footage type movie called Creep and it has a very silly jump scare moment near the end that was 10/10 for me.
its so awful that people react like that when you disagree with their opinions. I personally loved the mean girls movie and STILL enjoyed your video because I like the style of your videos and am a fan of yours. people need to learn how to interact with creators in a way thats normal!
I feel like if a critic whose opinion I respect disagrees with me that usually makes me take a second look at something to try to see it from their POV, not hate the critic. I'm probably biased because people still occasionally send me angry messages about a 2 year old article 😅
as someone who first found you through your script doctor days, i’ve always appreciated the critiques you offer, especially when it comes to movies as it’s my own passion (biased ik), but i know you’ll always be watching them too 🍿 the whole idea with this account is to support you for your opinions as an individual, and it’s such a shame that as you’ve grown (which i love, girl, keep thriving and shining! 🌟 ), nastiness has managed to creep into even the most sacred spaces like this little corner of the internet. i see you, jenny ✊🏽so many of us see you and want to hear from you because of your unique perspective and framework. i’m really sorry you’re facing backlash for literally just being yourself. you’re appreciated, truly. 💗
Jenny asked what scene in a movie has made us recoil like the probably-apocryphal train terror in early silent film shows. For me, it was the scene at the end of “Audition,” when Asami inserts needles into Shigeharu’s eyes and cuts off his foot.
My train moment was when Danny turned the corner and saw the twins in The Shining...I mourn the fact that youths of today have to get their first trauma via the internet instead of accidentally watching a horror movie on TV, I reckon that the latter is less damaging in the long term, ha
My train moment was the scene in "In the Heights" where they're singing on a balcony and it looks like a character is going to fall off head first. I legit screamed in the cinema! Biggest scare in a non-horror film for me with such a visceral reaction ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05eXFpkyWx4 around 40 seconds in )
Holy shit that was unsettling, you weren't kidding. From the comments most people just seem to find it cute and artistic but I had a visceral reaction too, wow
Love ya Jenny! So happy you’re okay and love hearing your thoughts on 2024!
Love that the Barbies look like they’re getting ready to jump you
My train moment was when I saw Jurassic Park for the very first time. It was 2013 and in theaters in 3D for the anniversary. I had my feet up on a railing in front of me, and when they're climbing into the vents and the raptor jumps up and almost gets someone's leg, I yanked my feet back without even thinking about it
I spent an embarrassing long time with the Jenna ortega movie thinking you were talking about Morgan Freeman instead of Martin Freeman. I was like "wow that's insane but kind of brilliant?" but no
I feel like your bandaid sideline story was a saga worth a m night shyamalan movie
Recoil moment: literally all the social interaction moments in the movie May. That film has (from what I remember) insane gore, but watching the awkward conversations actively made me run from the room multiple times
Regarding the Silent train movie urban legend. My grandfather saw this as a little kid and he told me it scared him and he closed his eyes and his mother laughed at him. But no one was running away in terror.
Jenny, thank you! Glad you're safe. My picks are too many scenes from the exorcist (even that lurching dresser is terrifying) and the scene in return of the living dead 3 ( a terrible movie) where the first zombie is moaning, idk it just freaked me out. All the zombies in Dead Alive, that movie terrified me! It should be noted these all freaked me out as a child and still haunt my brain! Love this video, you're always great! I look forward to these rambles more than any other content out there.
My train moment was probably the tub drain scene from Saltburn. I was on the cusp of that feeling for the entire movie, but that was the moment I wanted a helicopter to airlift me out of the theater.
I liked the beginning of heretic but I felt like they screwed up the movie's ability to say anything. I think the minute the bad guy turned to actually be a serial killer instead of just playing with the audience's expectations, it sort of failed.
its funny actually, i dont think im a sonic fan (i havent watched any of the shows or played any of the games as a kid), but its so entrenched in the internet spaces i am a part of that the indulgences in sonic 3 were very exciting for me to watch. ive been hearing about shadow the hedgehog my whole internet life, he is like family to me! Also, ecstatic to hear that youre enjoying the barbie video again!!!
I understand the impulse, but it bugs me to see people in these comments complain that the insane parasocial behaviour described in this video has ‘deprived the rest of us of content’. We aren’t the victims, you guys!
My train moment was in Babadook, when the mother starts yelling at her son and we see the scene from his perspective. For a moment there the fear really paralized me, I felt so vulnerable.
Discussion question: I watched Devil's Advocate and there's a scene where the lawyer's wife is having a dream or vision where she's approaching a baby. I walked out of the room. It wasn't even scary really, I just can't handle suspense
Movie recoil moment - I dunno if this counts as it CLEARLY wanted you to leave, but the jackass movie -- and i'll keep it vague and say 'paper cuts' scene. I literally clutched my face and ran out of the room.
Parasocial stuff can definitely be weird and scary. For what it's worth, I really enjoy hearing your opinions about things you're passionate about, even though I wouldn't seek out a lot of this media myself. It's like listening to a friend talk about their Thing that isn't my Thing but I'm happy for them.
For the discussion question, not a recoil but the dive into the Isengard orc pits in FotR changed my life as an 11 year old. I was like "ok I want all my movies to feel like a rollercoaster from now on."
In response to the prompt: any time someone in a movie slips/twists their ankle lol. I have hyper mobility and do it all the time so I always flinch when I see it. The most recent example was in Nosferatu when Thomas slipped on the stairs walking into the crypt.
My train moment was definitely the first scary red mask guy (don’t remember his name) jump scare in the original Insidious. I was like 12 when I watched it and it was my first real horror movie and maybe my first jump scare. I was terrified! Also Challengers was on The Black List and is very good!
I still can't even look at stills of that demon and I was in high school when I saw it
The scene in Pet Sematary with the sister scared the hell out of me. I must've been about 10 or 12 and that was probably the first R movie I saw
My train movie thing is that as a child I watched the M night Shamaylan hit the village far too young (like 8/9) with my older cousins and I ran out of the room the first time the monsters are shown only to realise I live in the middle of the forest and I was wearing red pyjamas - which was the only colour they could see.
my train scene - the entire cave sequence in “the descent” (until the monsters show up)
A modern horror classic
Haters gonna hate. I realize it's easy for me to say, but please don't let randos with weird emotional baggage keep you from making the content you want to make. For every creepazoid, there's a thousand people here who support you wholeheartedly. ❤️
you ma'am win the internet today
Mormons aren't that mad about Heretic. We're kind of relieved it wasn't about us having horns haha.
Oh that’s interesting we (Jewish) get that one too on the regular, I guess bigots aren’t the most creative people.
My train moment as a kid (and probably now if I rewatched it) was any scene with the child catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Specifically the one where he makes eye contact through a window with the kid who’s hiding. I watched this movie often as a young child despite being born in the early 00s because my older sister was obsessed with it and I don’t think it will ever leave me.
Your makeup here looks really nice! I was surprised by your comment about it. I can't tell if it's the lip/cheek color or your shirt, but something is making your eyes and hair color pop.
So, almost no one is going to relate to this, but there was a movie about a decade ago called The Tribe, which had no spoken dialogue because the characters all communicated in Ukranian sign language. In the scene, a character receives an underground, at-home abortion and while I don't remember the scene being that literally graphic, it was so subdued and conveyed the realistic sense of being over someone's shoulders while they received a medical operation that, no joke. I had to stumble out of the theatre, nearly tripping over a woman who had fallen to her knees and was vomiting in the walkway, to the men's room where my body literally made me go blind for around six or seven minutes in what I now know to be called 'psychogenic blindness'. It wasn't exactly 'I think the train is going to run me over' but it the most visceral, dumbest reaction I've ever had to seeing something on-screen.
Non-theater scene comes to mind: in the original Haunting movie (1963) where Dr. Markway's wife pops out of the attic trap door (and only Eleanor sees her) scared the crap out of me, like physically jumped scared me. In-theater, it was probably something from Jurassic Park (T-Rex smashing through the glass roof of the Explorer).
Another The Haunting 1963 aficionado! It's a staple of my Halloween watches. This year I paired it with The Innocents and Carnival of Souls for a array of horror about repressed young women
Choosing to believe the cut part was about the Mufasa movie 😔 That movie was such an interesting mix of great stuff and terrible stuff but it’s hard to have a conversation about what was actually good or bad about it because everyone made up their minds about it before it even came out
Coincidentally Mufasa also accounts for my ‘recoil in horror’ movie moment of the year. Barry Jenkins has such a distinct and weird directorial style that there’s several shots in that where the cgi lions are jumping right towards the camera in slow motion at you, and I screamed every time
I'm so glad you are feeling more positive about the Barbie video, and are making progress on it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on 2024, I definitely agree that the start of Heretic was really solid, really tense, and am thoroughly enjoying Hugh Grant in his Villain Phase.
I can’t wait to see Jenny enter the frame for the Barbie video Bibble-purse first.
My ultimate cringe in fear movie moment is in Jaws when Hooper accidentally comes face to face with a corpse in the hull of a wrecked boat. I saw that scene for the first time when I was WAY too young and it has haunted me ever since despite really loving the movie.
When I saw Magic Journeys in the Journey Into Imagination pavilion the audience reached out to touch the 3-D projections. This made sense to them. It made sense to Michael Eisner to replace Magic Journeys with Michael Jackson and to replace Dreamfinder with Eric Idle. Go figure.
Those Barbies are super creepy. I swear I saw one of them move.
only tangentially related, but my 80 y/o grandpa told me that urban legend as a kid but spun it as a skeleton jumping out of the screen instead of a train. no idea why. he was just saying stuff i guess.
i can't get over anything except the fact no one calls them "cookie fortunes"
I can't believe someone took your criticism of the mean girls movie musical as a serious personal offence. I'm sorry that they and other people were so shitty to you that you feel like you can't share your opinions on your own patreon! Some people just ruin it for everybody. This video was boss and I hope you're having a good day!
Ive been a patreon subscriber for quite while and while I don’t always agree 100% with all ur takes i still think the way you speak about everything is so compelling and interesting to listen to I can not fathom going under a video titled “Jenny’s takedown of mean girls” and then pearl clutching when you in fact take down mean girls. That being said i hope no one in these comments is shocked by your “hot take” that shadow is a cooler evil sonic than metal sonic LOL.
YES!!!! finally some 'kinds of kindness' love!!!!!
Thanks Jenny, I’ve been having a bad one and rewatching old Patreon videos is one of my ways of recovering after a meltdown/shutdown.
oh, and my recoil response moment wasn't from a movie. i re-watched the first series of the pokemon anime this year, and there was this one horrible moment where this old man looked down at misty in a bikini, blushed, and said "you remind me of my granddaughter", and the way the framing looked afterward made me wonder in horror if he was going to start moving towards her. luckily, he didn't, but that was my worst media moment of the year, personally
my train recoil moment was any scene with the hot dog fingers in everything everywhere all at once
The movie that made me physically recoil is a recent one. I just saw Presence and there’s a scene, in the daughter’s bedroom that I didn’t see coming and as it was happening I physically started climbing out of my seat because (for me) it was so out of left field (in the moment) and made me so uncomfortable. It makes sense (in context) as a twist, but I just never realized, until the moment it was happening, that a scene like that was going to be in this movie. My friend saw it coming, so apparently I was just oblivious. 😅
I just attended the worst ever dress rehearsal at the Norwegian Theater. I had to leave in the break cause it was so embarrassing to watch, so imagine me walking out of the theater, turning off airplane mode and seeing a notification for this video. I needed this comfort right now. As for your question, I get that feeling whenever I see a video that points the camera down into the ocean, or that does that thing where the camera dips under the waves. If there's a vague shape there I'm losing my mind.
Imagine how awkward it would be if one of those performers is also subscribed to Jenny's Patreon
Every time Jenny talks about negative interactions with "fans" of hers, it bums me out. When a critic you respect has a different opinion than you, that's an opportunity to enrich your own taste. Chances are, they are approaching it from a perspective you didn't consider. At least that's the case in my experience. I almost always walk away glad I heard them out, because even if my opinion didn't change, the way I understand media has expanded.
ALSO, and this is obviously a secondary concern to Jenny's mental health, but it is a HUGE BUMMER that bad-actors are keeping her from making certain kinds of content. We aren't getting bad book readings or movie reviews because certain people can't get it together.
Regarding your discussion Q: The last scenes in The Substance were just so distressing and anxiety inducing for me. It’s been a long while since I had been squirming in my seat from a movie.
I can totally understand this response but the last bit of The Substance was one of the most entertaining moments of the year for me. Was laughing my ass off
I did actively recoil during many of the "falling in love" scenes during IT ENDS WITH US... outside of all the BTS drama, the main guy came off as so cringey
Jenny hates a ton of movies I actually like for nostalgia reasons but none of that stops the content from being very charming and funny 🤷♀️
I can’t explain why, but I am so hype for the Barbie movies review. I don’t even play with this or have seen any of them…but I WANT! 😂
The weirdest thing about the weird parasocial comments is that like... Even if someone we were watching was our friend... Do... Do people not disagree with friends? Don't most people disagree with their friends every now and then? We might have a different favorite character or a different interpretation of parts of a game that are fun. Isn't that normal?
I rarely disagree with you to your point but I think Quiet Place had a good thematic ending for the main character and Trap was highly entertaining, so what I’m trying to say is that I hate you on a deeply personal level.
I disagree with plenty of Jenny’s opinions and I always find it valuable because it makes me think more about why I responded to something the way I did, hearing a different perspective! I will say though, usually the times I disagree with her are when she’s less positive about something I did like — but this time I got a rare case of the reverse! As a Wicked-the-movie hater it’s tough out there lmao. I’m in such a minority it seems! In any case, getting so worked up that a stranger disagrees with you about pop culture that you have to be nasty to them…… people need to get a life and grow the fuck up. Sorry that Jenny’s been dealing with that. My media recoil moment is the entire show of Heartstopper or similar media that’s about like… young love, it activates my secondhand embarrassment so much that I literally couldn’t get through more than a couple eps of that show! I’m sure it’s good and cute or whatever, it’s just too sweet that my metaphorical teeth start buzzing from it.
44:30 Jenny is speaking truth there. The reactions get way way too intense these days and it never feels like a commenter wants to explore their own opinion on things or even try to understand anyone else's opinion on things. Too much straight-from-the-gut emotional takes.
sorry about all the awful comments you’ve received - even when i’ve disagreed with your opinions i still just enjoy hearing your takes. i hope you’re able to make the content you want without people unnecessarily hating
Jenny has ripped through some movies I really enjoyed, but I still love (and rewatch) her takes on those movies. People need to learn to chill and lighten up.
The guy who Jenny blocked had blocked me for calling him unfair for hurling mud at Jenny. I don’t even know all the things he wrote because the whole thread disappeared from my feed when he blocked me. Disagreeing with Jenny is fine. Attacking Jenny is not fine. She’s right to block anyone who doesn’t know the difference. I’m sad about Jenny editing out part of the ramble because she was worried she would be personally attacked over her opinion on something in pop culture. I would hope the reason we’re all subscribers is because we want to hear Jenny’s opinions so she should always feel safe to express them.
As for recoiling, the one that instantly comes to mind is from The Substance when you see Sue stick the spinal tap needle into the same, clearly infected spot on Elisabeth's back. To be fair, I had to watch most of The Substance like this 🫣 but that one got me the most.
For me it was when Sue took off her bodysuit and then all her organs fell out. The gasps of shock and horror in the audience and my visceral reaction to recoil...truly an iconic film
also, i've heard other creators talk about that parasocial thing where people project all of their opinions on the person making the video, and it does sound like a super offputting experience. i kinda get the feeling that people have been rude to you a lot lately, and i'm sorry about that :( i know that's kind of just a part of the 'influencer experience' but please remember to take care of yourself and avoid as much of the BS as you can!!!
I don't get why people care so much about different media opinions. Do they really spend all their time watching only people that agree with them? I probably disagree with most of Jenny's opinions. I watch because I think she's funny and makes interesting videos.
I like hearing opposing opinions on media. I wish people were more chill about it.
Regarding your question at the end: I think the attraction was "If You Had Wings" in WDW Tomorrowland. They had a room where various projected scenes were coming at you (with wind effects) and your ride vehicle was moving forward, of course. I know this isn't a cinema answer, but it's my most distinct memory of what you describe.
If we're talking rides, I forgot about the truck appearing in Test Track 2.0 every time and fell for it every time I rode it! My reaction was so funny to me that I laughed for the rest of the ride every time, too. That piece of shit was held together with dental floss and prayer, but I will miss it.
i loved ariana as glinda, especially because she was clearly enjoying herself SO much the entire time. she was absolutely living her theatre kid dream, chewing every bit of scenery, and giving it 1000%. she was super fun to watch
What did you think of Nosferatu?
Perhaps that was the movie she cut out?
To be totally real here, I think everyone needs to learn at some point that your favourite internet creators can have opinions you don't agree with and that's fine. I think it's very easy to put too much stock into stuff like that, to put on your favourite creator's latest video and expect them to validate all your media opinions. You start watching someone's videos because you agree with them, and you let their fun & clever arguments validate your own opinions. You start to put the person on a pedestal, see they're so smart, they're right about everything! And they're on my side! And then suddenly they use that same wit & rhetoric skill to say something you hate, and it feels like an attack. You put them on a pedestal and gave their opinion so much weight that it shakes you to your own core, you feel the need to defend yourself for having that opinion, or even to tear them down from that perceived pedestal. And I think the antidote to that is just confidence. Growing into your own opinions so you don't feel shaken when someone has a different one. If you feel secure in your own takes then you can handle someone disagreeing, because it doesn't really make a difference to you. And it's important to always remember that we only see such a small sliver of who this hypothetical creator really is, and they're still a real person with a whole life outside of their videos. I think there's not a single person on the planet who will always have the exact same opinions as I do, and that's fine! That's enriching, even! I hope Jenny doesn't let these things disconcert her too much either. It must be difficult to have this job and this dependancy on public opinion, but I think the test of time has really shown that she has an audience that's not gonna disappear that easily. Idk long comment but I wanted to add to the conversation and share my experience from growing up on the internet. The video was fun! I liked the extremely cool hedgehogs in space!
I'd be bored to tears watching people I always agree with.
Fondly remembering that they reproduced the 'train in the movie theater' thing in the Civilization 5: Brave New World intro. In terms of a movie moment causing me some kind of emotional gut punch, the closest recent example I can think of is watching the 1991 movie 'Sleeping with the Enemy' which has some rather brutal domestic abuse and the feeling of threat is palpable. I'd also throw out 'The Secret Window' though the emotional reaction to that is somewhat stymied by the movie not being executed particularly well.
No One Mourns the Wicked absolutely had a huge glow up. I feel like Glinda's grief came through so much more clearly, and that really served to set up the frame narrative. Also it was just so nice how from the opening scene, you could tell it was going to be good. I was honestly going in bracing for it to be bad or even worse, mid. Very excited for For Good.
No One Mourns the Wicked has been one of the few songs that’s hard for me to sing along with because I get so choked up with everything Glinda must be thinking about. I’m glad the movie was able to telegraph it so well. (Also I listened to the soundtrack tons before I ever saw the full musical. [Wicked Spoilers:] And from just the soundtrack I thought Elphaba died in the end. Which hits so hard…and when you start over and realize what Glinda is having to do in the opening, it’s so heavy.)
Megalopolis is such a weird movie. Francis Coppola has made a lot of films that I love but I don't know how to deal with this one. Not sure if it is a spoof of contemporary Sci-Fi or just plain bad.
My cringe moment in a movie and I know it may sound stupid, is 'Large Marge' from Pee Wee's Big Adventure. To this day, I still look away when it comes on. : /
Totally! That and the judge doom scene in roger rabbit got to me
“Pretty Persuasion” with Evan Rachel Wood was about minor framing an adult. Very entertaining, but still…
“Which arm do we say is dead?” “Well…..which hand did you grope them with?” Lol
It seems like really a shame that negative feedback from haters is causing you to self-censor your content. I'm sorry that is such a problem. The internet really is a cesspool.
the scene in fellowship of the rings when they’re at rivendell and bilbo jumps at frodo for the ring and his face goes all scary was my train as a kid and kind of still is
I'm sorry that you catch flak from people who disagree with your opinions! I think some people need to learn this one neat trick, called being normal on the internet! When I see an opinion I disagree with, if I care enough about it to think about it at all, I do what normal people do and text my friends about it because they signed up to get deranged thoughts from me about dumb things and people on the internet did not. It sucks that you felt the need to cut that part but I get deciding not to invite trouble. Thanks for another fun video!
I had a Train Coming At Me moment with a different movie train. Despite the murder I found Shanghai Express very boring as a modern viewer but there's a shot of the train taking off and there are LIVE CHICKENS just milling about on the tracks. The train's moving slow but nobody's grabbing those chickens! Run chickens, RUN!!
It's at 1:22 of this if anyone is curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiNCo0rHA_w (tho watch at your own risk if you're sensitive to these things - the train kind of presses some of the chickens forward. I don't think they're hurt at all nor do I think it's a real train but idk)
apologies for this semi-off-topic-and-probably-corny-comment but I work a desk job that allows me to have pretty much anything playing on my second screen, so I'm just endlessly thankful for any and all insightful videos like this one that get me through the workday. I just wish people would be cool about hearing differing opinions about movies and not leave massively inappropriate comments?!?? My writing this out feels both obvious and completely useless, but like. I just wanna throw my hat into the ring as one of many people Who Don't Comment Very Often But Are Super Duper Grateful We Get To Hear Your Thoughts On Stuff!!! Especially in an era where it's harder and harder to stay tapped in to pop culture while trying to not be on social media. I genuinely feel like everything you put out makes the internet better! okbyyyyyee!!!!
Can we add this ramble topic to a poll? "Jenny Parrots Exactly What I'm Thinking"
I was about to make a joke about how Jenny has a roll of Duck Tape brand duct tape, then got sidetracked by reading about the history of duct tape, which was originally called duck tape because it used duck cloth ("duct" came into use in the 1950's). You learn something everyday lol.
I don't flinch much at the movies, but the moment I can recall that made me physically recoil from the screen was probably that scene in Bone Tomahawk when the cannibals bisect that one guy. Wasn't even the actions, it was the sound design, I had to leave the room.
I still think about that scene every so often years later.
I don't know if it counts as a Train Moment because it wasn't something I feel at risk of experiencing, but there are moments in The Substance where I was cringing away from the screen so hard I thought I would meld with my seat (excellent movie). Or for something more real, I guess in The Brutalist when Harry Lee asks Zsofia if she "wants to take a stroll." That was subtly but viscerally uncomfortable. It sucks people can't be normal about movie opinions from YouTubers. Sure it's a nice serotonin burst to have Nando V Movies agree with me about Penguin or Creature Commandos, but if that's all I watched I wouldn't know why people didn't connect with Saturday Night as a movie. I watch Jenny videos and I learn things, I appreciate that.
hi Jenny :) just wanted to say that I’m glad you’re safe, and I’m so thrilled for the Barbie video! I love the BCU, and it always made me overjoyed to see Anneliese and Erica in the background of your videos- Princess and the Pauper was my favorite growing up! I spent soooo much time on Barbie.com as a kid lol. wishing you well!
My train scene: I was in high school when the first saw came out in theaters. We went as a big friend group and the theater was absolutely packed. When the reveal came and that song started, I almost merged with my seat, then the entire theater broke out into absolute screams. Excitement, fear, disbelief. I've never had another experience like it, for a second I felt like that creepy dude was in the room with us, since everyone was acting like he was. So fun
Candyman's Candymerch is pretty lacking, I feel like I could do a better job and I'm not even that big of a Candyfan
when jenny said "the next thing on my list is imaginary" i genuinely thought she meant her next bullet point was going to be an aspect of some media that she wanted to see but didn't. i didn't know there was a movie called imaginary lmao
MAN TO WOMAN! OR WOMAN TO MAN!
I cried at Live and Learn, don't even care it went in and out. If you'd had told 14 year old me that they would adapt Sonic Adventure 2 and it would star Jim Carrey and it would be REALLY GOOD I probably would have died lmao
For anyone who watched Heretic and doesn’t know that much about Mormons, the two girls are on a “mission.” The church will assign the missionaries a specific location to go where they will be tasked with teaching about the religion. All Mormon boys and most Mormon girls are expected to do this, usually right out of high school or shortly after. There are countless horror stories about the things these kids have to deal with including having their passports withheld, terrible living conditions, and not being given proper medical attention. I assume a lot of the backlash this film received was because it called attention to the unsafe nature of many of these missions. *This isn’t intended to be an attack on anyone’s religion. I just hope for these kids to be treated better in the future!*
if anyone is interested in Mormons, Alyssa Grenfell is an ex-mormon and makes great youtube videos about the church! Another tidbit about missions is that two mormons on a mission together are supposed to literally never leave each others side (except to like,, shower)
my Train Coming At Me moment was when I saw Cats 2019 and the primal terror that gripped me when it looked like Jason Derulo was about to suck Francesca Hayward's toes
this is mine also. the absolute raw fear I felt in that moment
The last time I recoiled from a movie was the scene in Barbarian (2022) when they go down the stairs. I literally backed my chair away from my computer as far as my headphone cord would stretch.
I didn’t know Emilia Perez was a musical and I almost fucking died when Jenny played the clip
Spoiler tag for Gerald's Game: the scene were she degloves her hand to escape the handcuffs. I have never felt such visceral unease. Protip: DO NOT look up degloving on the internet.
It's good to know that Heretic didn't simply go the, unfortunately, common route of Atheist = Villain.
I simply would not be picking fights with the influencer who makes 3-4 hour long, deeply analytical video essays about the media they consume. That’s like the whole point? Cope? Sorry to hear people have been acting up.
In Jurassic Park. When Lex falls through the ceiling tile, then she pulls her leg in JUST in time before the raptor gets it. Everyone I know jerked their leg up in the theater.
I hope the YouTube mirror gets sorted out soon. Thanks for another great ramble.
My recoil scene was from the bob’s burgers movie - of all things - where skeleton teeth fall into louise’s mouth 😭🤢
When you were talking about Heretic, it made me think about that whole Strawman “Debate Me, Bro” school of Far Right rhetoric…. and I finally realized what it reminds me of: those old cereal commercials from when I was growing up. The kind where the kids are supposed to be so cool and edgy and the adults are these one dimensional stereotypes that the kids have to tell “yeah… of course YOU don’t get why we love Cinnamon Toast Crunch!”
As far as the discussion question, I would say the film 14 Hours (1951). It's about a man being talked off the ledge of a building. There was one scene where the man on the ledge gets emotional, slip, and almost falls. I gasped and reached for the screen. Like I could actually save the guy in this movie from 70 years ago.
My train moment was The Walk (2015). I'm afraid of heights so I was ready to be scared, but the moment he went out on that tightrope in imax 3d I grabbed my stuff and ran. Only time I've ever left a movie, still never seen the end.
Spoiler alert: he lived
my ULTIMATE primal fear recoil moment was the diner scene in mulholland drive...
My recent train recoil experience (perhaps a different kind of recoil than you asked for but oh well): I've been rewatching New Girl and I forgot that they occassionally reference trump or elon musk. Every time they've been mentioned I physically winced. There's a whole 2016 election episode and there's so much baggage tied to it now that it was kind of hard to watch it. It's wild to think about how much has changed in 8 years.
Not a movie, but the first time I saw BOB move towards the camera in Twin Peaks- bro I was cooked.
With Joker, I think you mean incel hero, as an edgelord isn't as inherently problematic as that version of the Joker.
I totally understand wanting to avoid internet intensity when it comes to feedback. I'm sorry not to hear the takes, I don't really watch much these days so I follow you and some other commentators to vicariously experience the pop culture I can't be bothered with. Like I say, I understand the reluctance though.
Pretty Persuasion is a fun, dark comedy version of the underage-seductress trope. It’s more complex and I don’t think it’s as easy as saying oh the seductress is the villain and this perpetuates bad stereotypes. And it has Evan Rachel Wood.
Hell yeah dude! The live and learn scene gave me goosebumps
Prompt answer: anytime an Achilles tendon is cut on screen, I recoil and look away like that train is coming at me. No other injury or death on screen makes it happen and I have no idea why it happens. But I will have trouble rewatching very good movies if there’s an Achilles incident in there.
