Ramble: Favorite defunct or charmingly outdated websites

Six Flags when I ended up on their website:

Thank you for your patience everyone! I ended up recording for way longer in raw file time than I meant to, and as such it took a bit longer to edit.

Also after recording the conclusion I did actually order a new camera, so, fingers crossed about that I guess

the experience of being a zoomer in a third word country with tech arriving super late here so every time a foreigner says “it’ll probably sound strange to Gen Z” i know i’ll be able to relate… just realized i’ve had the same experience with technology as the average millenial in america

I was going to recommend the article The Making of an American Girl by Aisha Harris, which is about Addy and how her existence was pushed and then carefully crafted by African American creators, and how she was introduced to a demographic of primarily Caucasian young girls, but it’s behind a paywall now, there are some other articles that look good though. Good thing there are several other black historical dolls now, I get why they wanted to start with a story of escaping slavery, but it really stinks that they took long to make more characters for black girls to identify more with in a way that isn’t primarily about posing intense awareness. Now there is a Harlem renaissance character, a civil rights era character, and the girl from the New Orleans best friend duo (not including 3 African American history mysteries main characters existent only in books).

As a kid growing up with g3 ponies, i had two sparkle ponies and i also loved them. I had an orange one with i think orange hair? And my brother got the one my mom thought looked like a boy, a purple one with purple hair. Then as we played with them all the ponies became my ponies but that one still feels like my brothers. My orange sparkle pony i think got played with rougher than the others, or her hair was just more fragile and so she started balding. So she became my grandma pony because her silver hair was falling out. Anyway i also love the sparkle ponies!

After getting back into Neopets as an adult, Battledome is almost purely a money making endeavor. Which is great because it's funding my newfound stamp collection, but I wouldn't necessarily call it fun in its own right. But neither is collecting virtual postage stamps, and I'm having a great time with that, so. Eye of the beholder, maybe!

I specifically requested Addy when I was a kid, I was like 7 or 8 and I don't think I understood that she was enslaved. As a homeschooled white girl in the 90s/early 2000s, there were a lottt of knowledge gaps until I went to public school later

J

I just started watching this but in case someone hasn't mentioned this already (at least I couldn't find anything from scrolling through a bunch of comments), the neopet that can turn into food (Chia) does so through magical chia pops and not the lab ray! So you can definitely still do that without access. Most of them are around a million np a pop but a few are way cheaper.

I would definitely be here for the fantastic beasts 3 video, I stopped watching the films after the 1st one but I like hearing about how misguided the later films are out of sheer morbid curiosity. and your video on fantastic beasts 2 is one of my favourites to revisit. about the controversy around it, I think I've seen someone from WB state that JKR's transphobia and general behaviour on the internet was also actively tainting the brand and it contributed to the decision to stop making the films, so maybe if you touched on that in the video it would help establish upfront that you're not trying to stan JKR or sweep her actions under the rug or anything else ppl might jump to if they see a video with fantastic beasts in the title...I mean it's probably more complicated than that but either way, I hope you find a way to make the video and be comfortable putting it out there bc I'd be really eager to see it

I didn’t have any of them sadly but i did read many of the AGD books from my public library and looked dreamily at the catalogues as a child. I also played the flash games on the website heavily, one of which was helping Molly, the WW2 doll with the braids, in creating a victory garden because of the homefront rationing measures lol these girls went through so much.

Im still mad they deleted all the old neopets accounts, such a scrooge move and for what lol it could have had a huge nostalgia revival but instead my friends and I all went to the website and our accounts were deleted so got sad and didnt engage with it any further lol and the stupidest thing ever is that mine does not even appear to be deleted, and despite having access to the account from which it was created they wont let me in, as if a 10 year old child would be allowed to put in their real name and birthday to sign up for a website with forums in 2001... I even remember the first password but they were part of a huge data breach so i guess everyone does haha im just salty i wanted to go to jelly land and play that game where you eat jelly to acquire mass one more time. Also didnt they accidentally inflate the value of old accounts by reskinning the neopets in a way everyone hates causing all the hacking in the first place lol so many bad calls for one little whimsical website...

l
leonineKelter · January 5, 2025

yeah, same. I was in middle school in the mid-late 2010s so I'm young all things considered, and we had a computer class that was a learn how to type and code sort of thing in a computer lab. In both elementary schools I went to I wanna say every week or so we would go to the computer lab and just. play games. fuck around. have fun. while in middle school it started to be for actual assignments lol. by high school it was COVID time and we all had our own personal Chromebooks, so I witnessed the evolution of computer labs into computers being the main source of schooling firsthand . they never taught us how to use Canvas and stuff in middle school thinking it wouldn't mean anything or be of any use and then it became impossible for me to take any class without it a year later

This video unlocked at least two lost memories for me. I used to spend hours on the cartoon network website playing flash games (I was one of those kids), and I remember seeing stuff for cartoon orbit all the time and not quite understanding what it was. I was curious, but it required a login and I didn't realize as a kid that you can just make an email address. And I remember the WB store exactly as described, and there is a unique feeling of vindication having a mildly disappointing experience as a child, forgetting about it completely, then having it resurface and be told YOU WERE RIGHT, IT WAS A BAD STORE!

For me, I wouldn't watch the video if you make it because anything related to JK makes me physically ill. I would be sad to not watch one of your vids. I know people adore her work but I don't separate art from people who still use it to hurt others. She's not dead or from Long Ago. It's too fresh. My two cents, eh.

Feel like this vid might be worthy of an asterisk, top notch ramble. All of the old Pokemon sites jogged a memory of an ancient fansite of a Pokemon artist who posted fake cards with beautiful original art. (I *remember* the art blowing my 8 year old mind, but tbh that wasn't hard to achieve lol) Despite checking it all the time, the only concrete memory of the site that I have is the artist's avatar, who was a basic anime girl with red hair...if I ever find a monkey's paw, you better believe I'm asking it for the name of that site

I know I'm in the minority here, maybe the only one, but please don't do a fantastic beasts video. She pours money into transphobic policy, it's not an ephemeral 'support' thing with her, her money actively hurts real people, right now. Your channel and patreon both have a huge audience. Roasting movies makes people want to watch them. There are so many hilariously stupid movies out there, please just choose any other one but this.

When i reached the part of the vid about the Warner Bros store it triggered some long forgotten memories of going to one as a kid in the Metrocentre (a big indoor shopping centre in the North East of England). Jenny's right that there wasn't anything in there that kids would want to buy. However in the rear of the Warner Bros store in the Metrocentre they had a crawl through space ship, which had a number of SFX buttons you could press. Any time we went there as kids we ran straight to the back of the store to "play inside the spaceship" giving parents/guardians time to shop for boring clothes. EDIT bc i've also just remembered that Metroland existed and if Jenny reads this comment she might find the idea of a defunct theme park inside of a shopping centre worth taking a look at: https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/history/gallery/metroland-colour-memories-gatesheads-metrocentre-8594270

OBS/Camera Stuff: Hi Jenny! I'm sure you're probably drowning in advice but I'm happy to throw in my 2 cents. I've streamed on twitch for 7 years using various DSLRs (Sony A7sII, Canon 5D, Canon R5, Sony RX100 VII which is a point and shoot but still uses similar hookups for hdmi capture.) I love the Elgato Cam Link for capturing the video from DSLRs, it's been the most reliable for me over the years. The frame loss does look like it may be an encoding problem or an issue with bit rate. Just to be safe though, take a peek at the HDMI output settings to confirm what frame rate you're outputting and make sure the obs frame rate matches. Also make sure you're in video mode, I've had some trouble in the past helping a friend set up a Sony A6000 because they were capturing the live view from photo mode instead of video and the footage looked off. Hope you're able to get your new gear up in running to your satisfaction!

I finally made it through the ramble. I'm really glad I did. The WB store tangent. OMG! Me! Like literally me! Young Finn filling his bar mitzvah invite registry, there was so much —(now I am an adult) man "aka 'dad,'"— merch I wanted from the WB store because it had Taz on it. "Yes I need the Taz fountain pen, the Taz line of ties, the Taz money clip, the Taz checkbook holder, Taz golf club covers, the Taz self winding Tag Heuer wrist watch, the Taz desktop ink blotter, the cool hang out Taz gangsta shirts..." I got so many Tazmanian devil plushies from my mother and aunt in like late elementary early middle school. WB pumped those out in numbers and it's right now coming back to me; how many there actually were. I had a 8 inch Taz biker, and 8 inch Taz Yankee, and 8 inch Taz hula, astronaut, sailor, baseball, construction worker, tennis pro, torn tuxedo, school crossing guard, Knott's berry Farm themed with a giant lollypop. There was this ENTIRE LINE of Taz plush I had all of them. And then as a teenage dude inviting girls over to like hang out in my bedroom on my bed and "watch tv"... I very quickly threw them all in a closet and forgot about them until this moment. Like here's one I totally forgot about having. Snorkel Taz https://i.imgur.com/myPuwrY.jpeg

Amazing video!! Especially as I am deep in my own Neopets reawakening, this was such a treat 😊 I would love another Fantastic Beasts vid, your media analysis vids are always SO good. I get how it's touchy and it's probably true that some people will be mad, but I don't think talking about the shortcomings of a film is the same as supporting an IP or the people behind it. As a JKR hater myself, I'm super interested in your observations about this high-budget, poorly-thought-out series. It's fun to take things apart and talk about what works and what doesn't!

This era of the internet is so important to me. My brother actually ran a Redwall fan site in the mid 2000s to early 2010s while he was in middle and high school. i agree, i feel like there is nothing flattering about any of her fantastic beasts reviews and nothing in them made me want to watch the movies at any point. it would do minimal to no harm and i would personally enjoy it. if anything its helpful, it paints JKR as a bad, washed up writer trying to recapture the magic of her first series unsuccessfully. its a bad look.

It's genuinely so exciting (to me personally) when you talk about G1 MLP! Tales was airing when I was in preschool and I distinctly remember my mom taping it for me, and I spent so much of my early internet years on MLP forums and navigating webrings. I'm still collecting and trying to find Ice Crystal for... you know, not $700. I've been customizing and restoring ponies since I found Aikarin's site, so hmu if you ever want info! My favorite site for hair and tinsel is Shimmerlocks; it's a smaller retailer than Dollyhair, but the owner is one of the nicest people on the planet. Also: thanks for standing up for puke-green ponies. TAF Buttons is one of my favorites and she doesn't deserve the hate!

R
Remi P · October 7, 2024

Every couple years, my grandparents would take me and my sister to Pennsylvania to see a bunch of Amish shops and barns full of quilts. (Did anyone else do this? Are we weird?) We also went to Boyd’s Bear Country, as children not particularly attached to Boyd’s Bears, and it was so weird that it immediately became the highlight of my trip. My sister adopted a bear from the surreal bear nursery, and there was a birth certificate process with the nurse. There was also a very large (to my child eyes) Build-A-Bear style Build a Boyd section near the nursery, and I built a fuzzy white/sparkly bear that was super weighty and nice to hold. The theming and decor were very much pandering to grandmas who crave The Good Ole Days, like a massive Yankee Candle/Hallmark wonderland full of bears that secretly fly the stars and bars. My Boyds bear is still upstairs in my closet and I’m delighted someone else remembers my favorite roadtrip fever dream.

J

As a primary school teacher, the death of the "computer class" is one of the most frustrating things about my job. People assume that just because kids grow up around technology they'll automatically know how to use it and we really don't foster the whole "explore this program and work it out" thing anymore. Kids are expected to produce work on a computer for assignments and classwork, but there's no room to just familiarise themselves with the programs and it leads to a whole class of kids not trying to fix their own problems because they don't have the confidence or familiarity. It drives me absolutely insane, bring back the fuckaround and find out classes!!

Jenny, I love your Fantastic Beasts 2 video so much, I have probably watched it about one hundred times by this point. Those movies are as awful as the TERF that wrote them and clowning on them is not only fun as hell, but ethical because a loss for JKR is a win for human rights. I hope you do end up making that video about the third one, I felt like we were never going to get it and hearing that it's still a possibility filled my heart with joy. Thanks Jenny :')

G
GigglingGoblin · October 5, 2024

As someone who does not like JK Rowling one bit, I don't think there's any harm in doing a Fantastic Beasts video. I think an "I don't support JK Rowling" disclaimer would really help? I know it sounds performative, but, like, my main beef with HP fancreators is that they sometimes make me guess, and that's not a fun distraction when I'm trying to enjoy a Youtube video. I think most people just want to know going in. Like, if it was an actively popular HP work, that'd be one thing. But nobody is really suggesting the Fantastic Beasts flop expanded JK's media reach.

M
Markus D · October 5, 2024

I guess I have something like nostalgia for Neopets because I played a lot of it as a kid, but I also kind of hated it because it always felt like the really great items, like paintbrushes, were exorbitantly expensive and it felt like I was stuck in a real-life class system. I stopped thinking it was fun playing the sims with someone else in 7th grade when I was trying to be friends with this new girl who was being bullied and had no friends and when we tried to play the sims at her house she refused to let me participate other than designing one sim for her to be able to romance with her self insert sim. My family still calls it Marine World to this day. Also please confirm fellow Bay Area kids, but I remember this story where they were talking about how they knew orcas had different dialects in part because the trainers saw the younger one (Vigga) learn the older one's (Yakka's?) dialect. Edit: This was in the late 90s, but Yakka and Vigga definitely were a pair of female orcas that existed there at the same time. I think after one of them passed there was a false killer whale that stayed with the surviving one for companionship.

This was a fun video. Side note - I had never considered the idea of "parasocial relationships" until Jenny brought it up on one of the Evermore videos. Despite my Patronage here, I'm not much of a social media user. However, watching these videos of Jenny talking about her childhood certainly gives the illusion of a fairly deep social interaction. I don't think I've ever talked about my childhood so in-depth with my adult friends. Of course, in reality we're simply getting a postage stamp on a certain period of time.

M
Markus D · October 5, 2024

I would not understate Rowling's opinions as "unpopular opinions" that caused a "kerfuffle on social media" considering she's constantly spouting hard-line transphobia that's gotten her in legal trouble with people she's targeted as well as flirting with Holocaust denialism.

The pony websites! I grew up with G3 and some hand-me-down G1s and 2s. My little sister and I were obsessed with trying to find Star Catcher after seeing the movies. We never ended up getting one, since 6-year-olds can't go online shopping (and we never saw one in stores where we lived). After watching this I'm wondering if adult me needs to find one on ebay...

The worst causality of not being archived because the site owner disabled it is Snopes. Snopes was an incredible resource until the mid 2010s when the couple who owned it got a divorce, the husband took full control of the website, and modernized it so now the old articles from the 2000s are extremely hard to find because they aren’t well organized. The original website had everything organized with cute little Web1.0 emoticons and just had more character in general. I mean I understand they became more important for political fact checking because of how batshit US politics started getting during that era but I wish I could go back and read the old site

I love it when you end up on a MLP deep dive or history lesson because I was a massive collector as a preteen and at one point had lots of the ponies that are now valuable/rare. But I was completely removed from the internet fanbase side of ponies until adulthood because my family was kinda in a cult so despite them being my hyperfocus for years I still know almost none of the actual lore or internet history about them.

As a nonbinary person, I personally really enjoy seeing criticism of JK Rowling's work. I think a lot of her awful biases and stereotypes shine through her writing, and even aside from that her work tends to be pretty weak, so seeing people review her work is something I really like. That being said, I don't speak for all trans people, but personally I don't think you'd cause any harm by talking about fantastic beasts

Moondancer's Dream is my old website and it's so nostalgic seeing it! Also, I too pronounced it Dream-key because I only knew "quay" from reading, I'd never heard it out loud, haha. I did eventually come to love most of the ponies on the "ugly ponies" page. ;) MLPs were my absolute favorite toy as a kid and when I got my first pony (Moondancer) on my fourth birthday I carried her around saying "At last, all my dreams and wishes have come true." I didn't know anything about MLP before opening the present, I was just in awe of this beautiful unicorn toy. It was so cool looking up "My Little Pony" online as a teen and discovering there was a whole community of collectors! We were SO lucky to have Dream Valley. I first got on the internet in 1997 and Kim already had info on every American pony, neatly categorized by year. She also knew most of the accessories they came with. I don't know how she did it. Not only was eBay small at the time, but most eBay listings didn't have pictures, they were pure text. If you were lucky they listed each pony by color and symbol and if you weren't you'd get something like "Lot of ten ponies, there are three pink ones." Coincidentally I found KFC Vulpix at Goodwill a couple weeks ago! I love her, she sits at my desk at work.

As a Gen Z girl born in 2003, we did have a computer lab we would get pulled out of class to do. We learned to type and use word and then we also played games like on cool math. Didn’t get pulled out for science, just computer, art, gym, Spanish, music and library time. I found this really interesting because I honestly have never been to a lot of these websites. I did have a sparkle pony though (not now, so at least I cannot witness her decay). I had the purple one and a bunch of G3 ones along with a pony castle. No G1 or G2’s. My favorite was Wisteria and I really liked her movie. Ok i think the reason why we had specialized science class was because it gets messy and also prepares kids for the “lab etiquette” they will need in middle and high school. As a British non-binary person... 1. If you think you have an interesting take on the most recent Fantastic Beasts, then I would trust you as a creator to do that. I've seen plenty of videos from you where I haven't seen the source material, and the video hasn't (in my opinion) suffered for that. So making the video isn't encouraging people to watch the film and support the creator. I would appreciate an explicit 'I don't agree with JK's gender critical ideology' for those who stumble across you as new viewers. But I think there is value to being able to critically engage with art produced by people whose views we disagree with, and I think there's huge value in being able to ridicule people (or their creations) in a position of power, especially where we disagree with what they're doing with that power 2. I think Hamelys is the toy store name you're search for (the UK much worse but fancier in a boring way FAO Schwartz) 3. I looked up those Pokémon micromachines and the UK postage is so cheap, so I think we know who's winning there 4. I recently went to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and would love to hear your theme park expert views. There's such a wealth of rides, from 100 year old wooden coaster and some exceptional dark rides from multiple eras to a water ride with a flume through literal fire. And I only know how cool it all was because of the theme park knowledge I've learned from your channel. So I'd love to hear your expert opinion on this classic UK park

Oh! That glitter breakdown happens to old LARP weapons! They are padded cores covered in latex mixed with paint - there are makers who used a particular kind of copper/bronze paint that contained metallic flakes which meant it looked really cool BUT after about six months the latex would turn tacky and rot away. It's less of an issue these days but it still catches out new manufacturers occasionally.

That vibrating Pikachu took me right back, there was a weird fad for these little vibrating pull string toys in the 00s (I had a cute fluffy mouse that did it for sure and probably other things too that are probably still at my parents house). SO stoked to here you opened up the Fantastic Beasts 3 stuff again, I would love this!! As you say, such a fascinating failed franchise to document, on top of the actual film being so incredibly bad. I would love a video on that so much!

Jenny and I are the same age so whenever she talks about her childhood it always brings back my own childhood memories. I also only played computer games on disc until around 10. I remember the first thing I used to do on the internet was Google waterparks. I would look at all the rides parks had and wished I could go to them lol. I also remember this website my best friend showed me, it was a social site and there were like horses you could adopt. And I think the horses were actual pictures of horses and stuff. I feel like a might have made that site up sometimes because I have no idea what that could have been and my friend only showed me it a couple times.

My personal go to website was archiecomics. I would live there. Retrospective on the fantastic beasts movies would be great. They are bad and I wish I had gotten a nice beasty travelogue. But I do think making a video about just the films failing as films without addressing the infamous other stuff - jk transphobia and maybe even Johnny Depp - might lead to the comments you mentioned. So I agree with others that addressing it in some way could help because the cancellation of the films was bigger than the films themselves. I think you might get some silly comments anyway because some people are feral. But most will be chill. I hope you do it.

With respect to fantastic beasts: I think doing the video would be fine (especially if you're just roasting it lol). But I absolutely think you should disclaim at the start of the video that you know about the issues with JKR and you don't agree with her etc. Partly because it's reassuring to hear as a trans person. But mostly on a practical level, I think it'd be similar to the reason you redid star cruiser because you knew all the comments would just say "hey did you know star cruiser is closed now?". If you don't acknowledge the issues with harry potter before you start talking about it, all the comments will probably just be saying that.

m
minivinnie · October 3, 2024

But I think just making the video is fine, especially given you'd be roasting it and it's not like people can go see it and give it more money anyway. As a trans person who isn't super comfortable consuming 99% of harry potter content anymore, I still regularly rewatch your old fantastic beast videos. They're funny, and if anything it's kind of cathartic to hear rightful criticism and JKR's writing getting roasted

As an older zoomer I also had computer lab as a class (no separate science class, though)! The non-interactive curriculum largely taught already-obsolete information about different types of floppy discs and hardware. Had the same kind of assignment to make a PowerPoint presentation about anything, graded on inclusion of a certain # of each type of feature (transitions, etc). As you can imagine, encouraging 8-9 year olds to cram as many mid 2000s PPT features as possible into one presentation makes for deeply obnoxious, disjointed powerpoints. Easily half the presentation time per slide was spent waiting for all the added object/text animations to cycle through as they bounced/spun/dissolved on and off screen. As for educational computer games in class, my favorites were a jungle themed platformer and a Santa-in-spaceship asteroid shooter keyboard games. RE neopets: I barely played this game but I loved drawing fanart of the fairies and I totally remember the tooth fairy! I spent sooo many hours playing her in the little fairy snake game, flying around in her little vehicle leaving behind a trail of teeth. I actually really liked the later designs, but I always did prefer straight up fantasy. The forest and mermaid fairies were my absolute faves.

I believe the story behind both the high quality and the randomness of the KFC Pokemon Beanies is that they were actually from the same product line as the store-bought beanies with the more popular characters (Pikachu, Squirtle, etc.). KFC got these four in particular to release exclusively (possibly because they weren't as "valuable" as the others, maybe Vulpix was included as a more desirable addition to sweeten the deal).

Listening to you talk about MLP in this video is so fun and extremely relatable because I had a very similar experience with Sailor Moon dolls when I was a child on the internet! I was introduced to (and learned how to use) the internet specifically to research Sailor Moon dolls when I was five or six and would spend hours reading through the same four or five websites and learning about all of the dolls that were made across the world, and since that interest never faded for me I now own a lot of those dolls and it's such an emotional experience every time I add another vintage SM doll to my collection lol

J
Jenny Nicholson · October 3, 2024

Oh man you just reminded me I had a sailor moon computer game where you'd click around this plaza on the moon and I think just unlock music videos about the different characters. I was obsessed with the pink child one because *I* wanted to be a kid who hangs out with Sailor Moon. And then crude cgi models of all the sailors would come out and dance to the theme song

As a trans person myself, I think the Fantastic Beasts video is totally fine to do. I feel like at this point the majority of the Harry Potter fandom denounces JK Rowling's ideals and separates her art. It might be worth it to mention that you were worried about the negative connotations because it will show people that you fall into that category. Even without a disclaimer though, I think the act of simply reviewing a movie is innocent no matter who created the series.

S
Spiky Ditto · October 3, 2024

I remember waaaay too much about neopets. I think I joined it in year 2 or 3? I had a really similar experience where I wanted to try the Jamba Juice Tigerfruit Smoothie, but it was at a mall stand and there were no signs for it, so I wimped out because I didn't want to ask for something and get a blank stare because it wasn't there. Also neopets and neopet accounts definitely purge. Neopet fan forums used to track old accounts and monitor for when they'd purge because they'd want to scoop up interesting pet names or secondary accounts with good names. It's probably still a thing, actually, since modern neopets is so obsessed with pets that have proper real world names, and the better the formatting and more common the name the more desirable in their modern pet trade. I don't know the exact threshold for purging, but it had to be at least 5 years of inactivity or more. There was a funny bug related to purged pets, where if you made a pet that had a purged pet's name, any description the purged neopet had on its pet page would be present on your new pet until you cleared it. That happened to me by complete coincidence once.

The thing I look back on computer lab and can’t help but be fascinated by was that essentially, millennials were being taught how to use computers by a generation that was still figuring out how to use them themselves. Good teachers should always aim for their students to surpass them, but this just felt like a very unique moment in time where, within a few years of instruction, we may as well have been teaching them how to use computers and the internet.

I’m a Millennial/Gen Z Cusper (1998) and I distinctly remember playing that Addie game in computer lab to tie into our history unit. Also, we read one of the Kaya books in advanced reading group and I’m pretty sure she was kidnapped by a different tribe? I was 7 reading that.

K
Kyra B · October 3, 2024

lol and now I’ve finished the video and I’m gonna go back to my like 10th Yesterland reread. Thanks for the ramble, this was a great nostalgic one to be my first new ramble since I became a patron!

J

Just subscribed to her patreon and a 3 hour video drops regarding a tiered list of best busted websites. Feeling very seen as a millennial

L
Lily · October 3, 2024

my mom came into the room when i was watching this and said, “why is she wearing that hat?” like god, mom, you just don’t understand.

K
Khurasan Miniatures · October 3, 2024

Actually your mom has a point. Not many of us are versed in the arcane Duality of Jenny. This consists of a little face speaking to us at great length and with considerable analytical insight and flair … while wearing a wizard’s cap and beard.

David A Behlman · October 3, 2024

What! Art had to be a separate classroom too because of all those supplies! Man… my early internet was web rings, collecting Star Trek backgrounds and sounds on discs, and of course fonts. I wasn’t expecting our first activity to be escape slavery.

A THREE (3) HOUR RAMBLE VID!?!? What did we do to deserve this. I don't remember sacrificing my firstborn son to the volcano to ensure a bountiful harvest.

a
aloominium · October 3, 2024

i remember the extent of our “computer lab” as a zoomer in the U.K in fifth grade was a program called “dance mat typing” with a crazy dancing goat in a hot pink jumpsuit

A
Austin F · October 3, 2024

i have a classic copy of Backyard Baseball that i'm going to play while watching this video so we can have a mutual 90s nostalgia moment edit: if that didn't give it away, i'm a fellow millennial, and i also remember the computer/general/science class split!!! i remember them teaching us the "Home Position" for typing (that i never actually followed lol), and scaring us by telling us about creepy people on the internet in the classic late 90s/early 2000s way, but i don't even remember any other part of the computer class...

A
Austin F · October 3, 2024

playing this game is reminding me that some of the songs for the kids in Backyard Baseball are actually still bops. angela's goes hard. the nostalgia i'm feeling is crazy... edit while watching the second half of the video: oh my god, i remember Something Awful. from what i remember, in later years, the forums kinda ended up going down the Encyclopedia Dramatica or Kiwifarms route, where there was so much edgy harassment of random internet people (although i don't think Something Awful ever did as much stalking as Kiwifarms). this was around 2016, where that stuff was really in fashion; i'm not sure if it's improved now that those things have a more negative reputation. man, that was a weird time.

M
Maggie Knight · October 3, 2024

as a gen z (2003) we did have a computer lab at my elementary school! i don't remember them letting us play games but we used it for research projects and learning how to google lol

H
Honeyhailey · October 3, 2024

Stuck home with sciatica this vid is perfect!!!

T
Tomorrow Sucked · October 2, 2024

I feel like the things that got separated in elementary school mostly just have to do with resources and staffing. For me, the teachers just traded off for their specialty subjects sometimes science, sometimes social studies, sometimes math. And computer lab was all just typing games

J
Jay Taylor · October 2, 2024

T

Almost entirely pony websites haha. I never would have guessed 🤔

L

Jenny decided to include every website in the history of the Internet

M
Mike Carpenter · October 2, 2024

I just got back into Neopets about a year ago and I'm a daily player again! Same account as I had in 2002. I'm not a mobile game person, but I've found that the once-a-day activities on the site are just enough of just the right kind of activity to be doing on my phone. Plus I do like a few of the on-site games that I will play every once in a while on my desktop. It helps that very old impossible-to-obtain items are being rereleased and recirculated so on-site goals are actually achievable things now which they weren't when I was a kid.

can confirm as a zoomer we had computer lab until i was in like 6th grade which was a great joy to have experienced

J
Jenny Nicholson · October 2, 2024

I'm kind of surprised! I wonder if they still do it for Gen Alpha, I feel like tech is so a part of life that I'd expect schools to not find it necessary and just cut it. I mean I guess ideally the tech would become cheap enough that classrooms could have laptops at every desk in the normal classroom and just integrate it into all lessons

d
deadmermaidfoam · October 2, 2024

I also loved the American Girl magazine

T

Just had a wave of nostalgia for an all-cupcake bakery we had in 2014, I remember buying Valentine's Day cupcakes from them, thinking high-end cupcakes was a cool business model and then never thinking about them again until now

Neopets had that weird connection to Scientology. Also, do you remember the Cartoon Network summer camp, where if you completed the tasks you got an animated sugar ray music video…

I'm a slightly older zoomer (25), but I was pulled out for music, science, and P.E. and occasionally computer lab. The same goes for my siblings, who are both younger than me. I think it might depend on the school and district, to be honest.

B
Béquilles · October 2, 2024

i’m 21 so a zoomer and in elementary we had “specials” where we would be taken out of class it rotated everyday between music, p.e and computer lab ( i hated it bc we mostly focused on typing and our teacher would cover the keyboard so we could memorize the keys so we could type without looking down, we also had to keep our hands in a “spider” position which was very unnatural and uncomfortable lol) but from what i understand that’s has been fazed out at least in my school district

J
Jenny Nicholson · October 2, 2024

We had a little bit of that typing stuff too, with the dreaded keyboard cover. It made 0% difference in my typing ability, I only became fast at typing when I joined internet forums and had stuff I wanted to type lol

Oh shit are we talking Neopets? I had an entire criminal enterprise on those forums, I was banned for life. All I wanted was the pirate paintbrush, I was embracing the pirate lifestyle
