Doctor Who (2005) 1x1 "Rose" | Full Episode Reaction!
Welcome to the first watch a long for Doctor Who! I am so excited to start this show with you and I'm happy to say I absolutely LOVED this first episode. It was everything I hoped it would be.

This show is presented in a watch a long format which means you need your own copy of the episode to sync with mine. I watched the bluray, but I believe it is currently streaming on Max (although I heard it's moving to Disney+ in November). I keep a blurred out version on screen with a timestamp to make it as easy as possible to stay in sync with me.
*edit* Unfortunately, my blu-ray runs the NTSC version of the episode which runs 4% slower than the streaming version so if you're watching on streaming it does not stay in sync. I'm truly sorry about that! I switch to the streaming version on episode 7.
I've made this first episode available for everyone to watch, but if you enjoy the experience you can continue watching the show with me for only $5.00 a month. I'd love to have you as a part of our Patreon community.

Glad i finally found a great Doctor Who Reaction, I hope you will have as much fun with the rest of the show as I had when watching it for the first time.
does the blu-ray version run slower that the stream version? i have season 1 on youtube and i can't keep it synced i start getting ahead within a few seconds. tried it on the BBC I player with a VPN and same thing. I was looking forward to watching this reaction but it unsyncs so fast it's pretty much unwatchable for me :( none of the other shows on this channel have that problem so i don't think its a recording issue.
Yea, someone else just brought this to my attention. Sorry about this! There must be some difference between the playback of the streaming version and the disc version. I'm wondering if the disc was originally converted for playback in American disc players or something. Apparently the second episode was fine and the third was out of sync again. I'm hoping to find a solution, but I'm at a loss at the moment.
I had assumed that someone who was more knowledgable about Doctor Who than I am would have given you a bunch of background, but I don't see any (other than Ryan and the Autons). All I've got is this little tip of the hat to the original series. The first Massive Historical Event that Clive shows Rose a photo of is the motorcade with President Kennedy just before he was assassinated, with The Doctor in the crowd. The assassination took place on November 22, 1963. Doctor Who the television show premiered on the BBC on November 23, 1963. Due to extended news broadcasts and (power cuts), the BBC ran a repeat of the first episode directly before airing the second episode the following week, giving it more of a chance to reach intended viewers--children. Doctor Who started out as a children's program to teach history, by traveling backwards in time, and science, by traveling forwards in time.
I'm sure those people will show up once we go live on YouTube publically :) That said, I love the idea that we would go to the past to explore history and the future to explore science. Such a simple, yet compelling approach. Although, I'm glad the new seasons don't appear to be trying to teach necessarily. Meh, I'm still open to learn a little something.
So excited for this! I recently started rewatching this show. Now I can do it as a watch along with you. I’ve seen every episode multiple times, so it’s fun to see your reactions, it gives this rewatch a whole new experience. Thanks so much for the content and keep it up!
Yes! Welcome. I love getting to rewatch something I love with someone for the first time. It changes the experience. Glad to have you along for the journey.
After watching this whole episode again, there are quite a few things that date it to 2005, but none more so than Clive's wife's surprise that his new visitor is a woman. This was a nod to how the classic show's fandom, and indeed pretty much all of science fiction fandom, was popularly considered to be mostly a sausage fest with only a rare glimpse of a woman.
Haha true. Pretty sure that’s effectively changed. Somewhere along the line my sister developed a greater I Tereso in nerdom than me.
You are hitting my favorite shows out of the park, I started watching doctor who when I was around 5 years old back in 1980. The first doctor I seen was the one with the curly blond Afro, I’ve been a fan ever since.
That’s awesome! I love that the show has been a part of so many lives for so long.
I am so excited!!! So glad you enjoyed the first episode so much, and it just gets better from here. Hard to believe, I know. 😄 I met David Tennant and Billie Piper at the Alamo City Comic Con in 2016 and got a photo with both of them, and it’s one of my most prized material possessions. My youngest daughter is also named Rose, although it’s after St. Rose of Lima and not the DW character, but its a nice coincidence. 😉 I wish you were uploading these every day, but good things come to those who wait. 😆 And yes, the music continues to be this good and even (in my opinion) gets better. I have all series saved to my Apple Msic when I need a Doctor Who pick up.
I know I have’t even made it to David tenant’s episodes yet, but I’d still like the picture 😅
By the way, I've noticed you often talk about the score/soundtrack to the shows and movies you watch, even once in a while saying it was the best part of the experience for you. Are you a musician? Music nerd (in a good way)? Just deeply into music that moves you?
Sort of all of the above. I took band in middle school and have always been a part of music teams at church playing various instruments and even occasionally leading teams and teaching students the basics. Mostly music just moves me more than anything else. It can flip my mood on a dime.
Chris I am SO EXCITED about how excited YOU are about Doctor Who! Everything you mentioned that you loved in this episode is packed full to bursting into the show (and more besides). I loved watching you discover that it's "The Doctor," not "Doctor Who," and what the TARDIS is. I love that you said "It's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside" for reasons that will be revealed to you as you progress through the series. You have SO MUCH ENTERTAINMENT waiting for you with this series and I can't wait to watch with you. Someone far more familiar with the original series than I am will surely fill you in on cool facts and call-backs and so on when they occur, but yes you can absolutely view this as simply the next episode in the series that originally aired from 1963 to 1989 (and some other bits here and there, an American TV movie, comedy sketches, etc.). And yes, the music will continue to be *exceptionally* good. SO EXCITED, CHRIS!
This comment just fuels the excitement!
Most of the episode previews are fine to watch, but definitely do NOT watch the one at the end of Episode 11, Boomtown. It has a truly unforgivable spoiler that caused such a massive backlash from the fans that the previews have been moved to after the closing credits ever since.
oh I'm so glad they eventually move to after the credits. It flowed so nice into them it seems wrong not to watch. Thanks for the heads up about ep 11.
Know what? Yes, please! This is where I came into Doctor Who when I was a...um...younger person. Lol! I could do with a little British sci-fi cheese! Surprised, but happy to watch with you!
I love that description, "british sci-fi cheese" Let's go!
This episode is just about the perfect way to sum up everything people love about the show, and it's especially brilliant how Rose is used to help ease in people who never saw the old series (which this series is very much in the same canon with, rather than being a remake), asking all the same questions they would. There's really just one regrettable bit where it feels like the effects people made the plastic Mickey a lot more obvious than Russell T. Davies was imagining which means it's incredibly silly that Rose doesn't notice, but if you can get past that, the story is just a blast from start to finish, and by the time they grab hands on their way to the London Eye, you're fully invested and feel like running along with them (of course helped along by Murray Gold's majestic music, which was always a major highlight of his entire time on the show).
Ryan, you unsurprisingly, summed this up perfectly. As a newbie to this universe, I felt welcomed rather slightly looked down on for not knowing the show's history. It was a perfect introduction and YES, I was so engrossed in large part because of the music.
Yes!!!! I’m so excited for this. Signed up for your patreon for this. Let’s goooooooo!!!
Welcome, Matt (taking a small leap there lol)! I'm thrilled to finally be watching this, and it's currently the highlight of my week.
