Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries (part 2)
The stakes, the characters, the twists. This show REALLY set the bar for setting up a series. I can’t imagine after the mini series ending having to wait (and hope) for the actual series.
Please, let me know your thoughts on this mini series and any interesting trivia or insights.
*Just avoid spoilers for future episodes, thanks!

I just finished watching this one and the sync was perfect! Whatever you did worked! I love your reaction! I remember feeling every reaction you had when I watched it on tv. But I didn't get to go to series right after. It was just under a year between the miniseries and the series (Dec to next Oct), but it seemed like forever. I could swear it was at least a couple of years, but it could just be my faulty memory. Your reaction to Boomer. Your wondering what is going on with the #6 that's there but not there and talking to Gaius. Your unsure whether to trust Gaius or not. Your reaction to every hard choice that was made. I mirrored every one of them back in 2003. Incidentally, I'd like to suggest watching 2 episodes a week. :)
That's incredible news, so glad it worked! I'm absolutely amazed at how much complexity there is on this show, so early. It came out fully formed and realized which is incredibly impressive. I do plan to only watch 1 per week, but seeing as 33 & Water were released as a 2 hour premiere I will be watching both!
A quick warning about the blu-rays. At least on mine, the extended versions of the episodes are right alongside the regular version. So when I put in the bluray and just click the 'play all episodes' button, I will often end up watching the non-extended version and then the extended version will play. I'll be sitting there for a good 10 mins thinking "Didn't I just watch this episode" before I realize. And in the episode select menu, it always seems to be that the expended version is on the next page, so I won't even realize there's an extended version of the episode I've selected until after I've watched the regular one.
Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks for the shoutout on my comment at the beginning. 😄 After the attack on the fleet that couldn’t make the FTL jump you probably get my comment about the tough decisions that are made. It’s done so well and really forces you off of the morality high horse we’re so used to being on as viewers.
You’re so right Aimee. I couldn’t imagine making the decision that Laura made, but yet we are immediately confronted with the reality that it was the right one. It’s true horror, and an incredible scene.
And a quick pronunciation guide (you'd get them eventually, but you did ask): HEE-lo, not Halo Chief TEE-rul, not Tie-rul The guy you're asking about who works in CIC is Gaeta. In the miniseries Tigh pronounces it GUY-ta, but starting with the first episode of the regular season (I think) everyone pronounces it GAY-ta. The "girl with the nice eyes" is Cally. I think that's all the ones you asked about :)
Yes! I realized watching the commentaries for the miniseries that I was butchering those first two haha. Live. Learn! Thanks so much for breaking it down!
Chris, have you been given a viewing-order guide? Since you have the Blu-Ray, there are certain things that should be played after certain episodes (e.g. "The Plan" should really be watched immediately after "No Exit", etc.) Do you need an ordered list/guide?
I haven't yet! I read enough to know I'd need one eventually, but I was hesitant to research it (especially before starting) because I want to remain as spoiler free as possible. I figured it wouldn't be necessary until at least after the first season. Any insight or suggested viewing order is very helpful :)
One odd thing is that the original show’s Boomer was also a man (and black, and, you know, human), but you never seem to hear anyone making a big deal about it like they do with Starbuck. My best guess is that this is because the original Starbuck actor Dirk Benedict (best known as Face from The A-Team) was such a huge sexist asshole about it, basically saying female characters should only be love interests rather than heroes in their own right.
Dirk Benedict *wishes* he was half the actor Katee Sackhoff is.
Such a brilliant move to build up to a big final Cylon reveal…and rather than one of the big names, it’s a minor character that you probably barely noticed while struggling to get everyone’s names and faces straight. Which just underscores what a threat the whole idea of human Cylons is, as Boomer is in a position to do some serious damage, and who would ever suspect her? And then you remember there’s still eight others we don’t know about (since the miniseries is a bit vague about it, Ron Moore made an official statement that the “twelve models” refers entirely to the humans, and doesn’t include the robots or ships).
You're right about that! He is in it enough that it is impactful, but not so much that he's seems like a prime suspect. He's in it more than I thought. I didn't notice him really until he went to Apollo questioning Lara's leadership, but when I started editing part one I realized he's there from the very beginning! I also learned from the commentary that making Boomer a Cylon was a very very late addition. Her character and story were already written so she really is incredibly well integrated and lacking suspicion. It was I think a great choice to pick her of all people as well.
