Farscape 1x1 "Premiere" | Full Reaction

What an amazing first episode! I didn’t expect to have so much fun right away as John Crichton’s experiment went so weird and wrong he ended up among some surprising alien…friends?

Welcome! Since this is the first episode of the series I've made this available for everyone! You will need your own copy of the episode to watch along, I'm watching along on Amazon Prime.

If you enjoy this consider becoming a member!

Enjoy!

** I'm watching the show on Amazon. It's also available for free on YouTube and many other platforms. I believe the online version is PAL and the original DVDs are in NTSC. The online versions should stay in sync, so hopefully yours does. If the version you’re watching doesn't, open the show in VLC player and you can adjust the speed up or down 4% and help keep it in sync.

do we know which running order being used? I think Amazon uses the aired order, not the intended order. (which is used on the DVD releases, and the international airings) If you don't know Sci-Fi shuffled the episode order a bit, moving the intended second episode I, ET to 7th (and you can tell by how the characters relate to one another) i believe once you get to episode 13 the orders line up. With the above exception of I, ET you really can't tell

Yes, Amazon has it in the order by airdate, I also bought the show on vudu and noticed the order was different between the two sites. I am following along with the order on wikipedia and on the farscapeofficial YouTube channel so watch in production order, so I, E.T. is next!

Gosh darn it! I cannot resist a Farscape reaction, especially when the reactor is fully on board before the premiere is even over. Going to have to sign up to watch the ride. I'm so glad you're watching it in the correct order. While all these long season, not arc-driven sci fi shows have some unevenness, I think many people who feel like the first half of the first season is rough are partly influenced by how the character interactions and relationship building, which are actually the greatest strength of the show, feel really erratic when episodes are seen out of order. The next few are not quite as polished as the premiere for a few reasons, including the fact that they were shooting them two episodes at a time, but they are each important because we can see the crew learning about each other and changing because of what they experience together. You'll definitely get to know each of them by the middle of the season, but it's all dropped in tiny moments and bits of throwaway dialogue. I find it really charming, and I hope you will too! The show is fast paced, definitely. They always overwrote the episodes, so most of them start in media res and many of them end with ambiguous scenes that expect the audience to fill in what happens, so that they can cram so much talking and fighting and sci fi stuff in between. It seems to throw some people, but I love that we don't waste time explaining things that don't need to be explained. It also gives the show a ton of re-watchability (I say having watched every episode a dozen or more times). Enjoy your first time through Farscape, there's nothing like it.

I love this show so much. It makes me proud to be an Aussie. You talked about how the pilot moves at such a frantic pace and how it might have benefited from a bit more time, but I actually disagree. I think that we as viewers are meant to feel as 'thrown-in-the-deep-end' as Crichton is, with all new information coming and coming and coming. This show is a fantastic journey, really unique as well and the I think all the crazy costumes and muppets really add to it and it's a shame more shows didn't follow suit.

Everyone should check out her reactions if you're not, she's great! I would be a patron of hers right now to watch Series 5 of Doctor Who, except I don't wanna risk Farscape spoilers 😅

You might recognize the actor who plays D.K., John's best friend/partner in the Farscape experiment if you age him up a bit -- that's Murray Bartlett, recently famous from the first season of The White Lotus and as Frank in the Bill & Frank episode of The Last of Us.

I'm so thrilled that you are instantly on board with this weird, wonderful, technicolor (thanks John) show of my heart - delighted with your delight! A bit of Doctor Who, a bit of Battlestar Galactica, and some top-tier Muppeting thrown in - what could be better? I'm super-glad you love the music - I had my fingers crossed for that. We're climbing the first, giant hill of the roller coaster - so take a look around, enjoy the view. You'll know when we head over the top and the ride truly begins. BTW no problems on Apple for sync, but weirdly, watching it on *Amazon*, the first five minutes or so you started running a few seconds ahead and I had to pause you a bit. Once John hit the wormhole, though, it stayed in sync for the rest of the episode. James Gunn has said repeatedly that Farscape is a direct inspiration for GotG, so you're right on there. Best line of the episode: "Boy, was Spielberg ever wrong. Close Encounters my *ass*." Runner-up: "Don't move! Or I'll fill you full of... little yellow bolts of light...."

Ah ... 'One man's descent into the Sydney S&M scene.' As an Aussie I'm just weirdly and immensely proud that we were instrumental in producing this beautiful, bizarre and entirely unique piece of work. Our TV networks mostly didn't care about sci-fi enough to show episodes in order, or at the same time each week, and then one of them went all in on this. For some reason. You're going to see some things that you won't see in any other sci-fi show. You're going to see some genuine icons of Australian entertainment culture, some of them just doing a job, some of them doing what they do very well, and some of them doing things I'm convinced they would never do if they thought it's get an audience. I love this show, and I'm going to have some things to say about it. I really hope that's not going to be irritating to anyone because I really, really want you all to love it too.

A bit of tech advice for anyone having sync issues*: 1. Load the You-Tube version. (Thanks Chris, this is really helpful!) 2. Let the video play for a couple of seconds, and pause. 3. Right-click down the page, in what would be the comments if they weren't turned off. Choose 'Inspect'. 4. A pane with a lot of technical details will open. Find 'Console'. In Chrome it's the second item in a toolbar at the top, in Edge it's close to the bottom. Other browsers may vary. 5. Copy and paste the following command into the console**. Press 'Enter' and you will receive a response (differs based on browser). document.querySelector('video').playbackRate=0.959 6. Resume the video. Chris' preamble should appear unaffected but you will be in very close sync one the video starts. * The process seems confronting up front, but once it's familiar you may find it quicker to handle it all in-browser than manage media in VLC. ** If you have trouble at this point, your browser may prevent pasting commands for security reasons. The console output should give details of any additional command you need to use to enable pasting.

Watching the Apple version and it seems to sync perfectly with your video. Can't wait to get further into this show with you! Farscape is definitely a show that has to find its footing a bit. It's hit or miss for the first two-thirds of the first season. But after some bumps, it gets REALLY good.

So glad the apple version is in sync!

Amazon Prime version! Thank you! There are two shows that I love, but different formats make them run at different framerate/speeds. Doctor Who and Farscape. With Amazon Prime I can watch along without having to dink with playback speed. Thank you so much. An interesting point: order of watching. Sci-Fi wasn't very good to this show. There were long breaks between episodes sometimes. They kept changing the day they aired the show. And, they showed some episodes out of order. I believe Amazon shows the episodes in the order they were aired. Which is fine, but I think there's a couple of continuity issues around episode 7. Where they don't know each other as well as they should after 7 episodes. It's not a big deal, just something to keep in mind.

I actually heard about this when I first started talking about the show and will be watching in the production order, this is actually the order they posted them on YouTube, so next up is I, E.T.

I will ABSOLUTELY be making time in my schedule to do the full watch-alongs for Farscape, even though that may mean things like going to bed at a normal hour. What won't I do for this show!

p
picjapan · June 23, 2025

Note: even though I was watching along on Amazon Prime there were some issues tracking with you. You were running just a bit faster than I, though not the full 4% you discussed. I'm not sure how the Amazon player works on different computers, if that can make a difference with tracking.

C
Charity Konusser (the chonus) · June 23, 2025

I found that to be true for the first, like, 10 mins (also watched on Amazon Prime), and I had to briefly pause Chris to let Amazon catch up, but once it did, it never went out of sync again for me.

It's an odd show. Agree that the first episode does come off as fully formed, more so than some shows.

LFG!!! 😁 also it’s funny that you mentioned guardians of the galaxy. james gunn is actually a big fan of farscape and said it was definitely an inspiration for guardians. you’ll notice some similarities as you progress through the show 😉

By the way my internet is back so there won't be any further disruptions to the schedule!! Farscape will continue with episode 2 next Wednesday :)
