The Haunting of Hill House 1x1 "Steven Sees a Ghost" | Full Reaction
In the first episode of The Haunting of Hill House I am thrilled to discover that this isn鈥檛 just some cheap jump scares, but a fascinating story with incredible characters! In fact, the scares are secondary to getting to know the core family, past and present. There鈥檚 a definite a mystery to unravel here.
Welcome! Since this is the first episode of the series I've made this available for everyone! You will need your own copy of the episode to watch along, I am watching the series on Netflix.
I upload these episodes to Patreon, but some people prefer the youtube video player so I also provide a YouTube link as well.
Enjoy!

OMG CHRIS IS DOING HILL HOUSE 馃檶馃徎馃檶馃徎馃檶馃徎 This is Mike Flanagan鈥檚 magnum opus (along with Midnight Mass imo). As you鈥檝e clearly already discerned, Flanagan鈥檚 horror is *so* much more than cheap creeps and jump scares鈥攈e does horror with heart better than anyone in the game. Strap in!
I think I鈥檓 just ready. Which probably means I鈥檓 not.
Well, I had other things to do...but.....
Patreon teasing now, letting us watch some of the edited before cutting out lol
So excited for this one. The storytelling in this show is phenomenal! I鈥檓 really looking forward to hearing your thoughts as the series continues.
This is the first of several Mike Flanagan projects that can loosely be called "adaptations," where he takes the basic starting premise and a few names and then just completely does his own thing from there. And it would probably be annoying as hell, except he's such a great writer and director that it works every single time. In this case, the source material is Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name, named by the likes of Stephen King as the greatest horror story ever written, and adapted twice before under simply The Haunting: an excellent version by Robert Wise in 1963 and a horrible one by Jan De Bont in 1999. The first of those would make a pretty good reaction on its own once you're done with this. There's one regrettable moment here where Hugh getting into bed has its volume clearly artificially turned up to manufacture a false jump scare, but don't worry, Flanagan never does anything like that again, and I actually very much get the impression it was something Netflix forced on him with how out of character it is.
Thanks for the insight! I鈥檓 excited to watch more of this show and maybe the rest as well.
