Your 1 roommate argument away from being homeless. Surviving means you and your ONE job can afford to feed you, shelter you, and provide funds to transport you to and from work without assistance. If you can’t do that, with no help, then you’re not surviving and that is the point of the list, NYC is hard to survive solely on entry level. Bro, I grew up in New York. I left New York City and move to Pa, working the same exact job. In NY i was living with my parents cause I could not afford to live on my own working said job. I was able to buy my own 3 bedroom townhouse in Pa working the same exact job for the same exact company in Pa. Paid all my bills and was still able to travel at least once or twice a year for vacation. 100% fact.

I'm a recruiter and I work heavily in the NY market across healthcare, construction and tech. The roles are limited and the budgets are limited. The amount of applicants is overwhelming and commute is one of the biggest factors along with pay. I work with NPs who can barely support their families and they make 150k. In reality that's really around 84k after taxes. Avg rental price is 4k. I live in San Diego and it's far from cheap but it still aint NY and I moved here from Dallas.

Young people go into the catering and restaurant industry because the pay is better but in order to make it in the restaurant or catering you are asked what you want to do with your life. If you are good at the job and have shown initiative and a willing to make the company better they will keep promoting you and you will can make 6 figures a year. But if your dream is an actor, singer, etc you will struggle until you find a way into that business starting at the bottom until someone see and believes in your talent. It is true if you can make it here you can make it anywhere. But the price you pay to live here is enormous!!!

As a 26-year-old making 72k in Houston, I have a good reliable car, 800 sq ft Apt that's around 1300 in a safe neighborhood, access to the city, resturants, parks, 20 minute commute from my job. Houston is the 4th largest, so I get the “big city feel” for the most part. Great quality of life imo. (things in Houston are going up don't get it twisted) When I talk to my cousins/friends in NY, LA, CHI, I cannot wrap my head around paying for those types of expenses at the START of your career. I definitely understand if you're in a niche career, I have a few friends that are making those sacrifices. I too understand myself as a Creative Designer, I may get cooler opportunities or more exposure in these big cities. But 50k a year 20 years ago is not the same as today. After all my bills, I have just a little extra for spending. I would not have shit left if I lived in those other cities and most of my friends don't 😂. A lot of my peers are working remote for companies that are based in NY, CHI or LA. Might fly in once a month or so, and stay they ass in the south.
