CPU dies from cringe

Hi everyone.

I finally figured out why Ren’Py keeps dying when playing videos. Turns out it doesn’t use the GPU at all and just decodes every single video file frame by frame on the CPU like it’s 2005.

To put it simply: the more videos you try to play at once, the more NASA supercomputers you’d need to keep Ren’Py from flatlining.

I was working on a new girl selection menu. Spent several days making animated portraits with transparency. Re-learned After Effects from a caveman level just for this. Got everything nicely exported, shoved it into Ren’Py… and it died.

To give you an idea: if I put all the portraits on one screen, there’d still be half the screen empty. And this thing already croaked.

There’s no real fix for it either, because Ren’Py apparently doesn’t consider proper video processing important and handles it in the most backwards way imaginable.

So yeah, I’m remaking it into a semi-static format instead. We’ll see how that goes.

I’m not entering Ren’Py’s hospital room for now, because its attending physician — also known as my CPU — is currently resting in a coma.

Guess I’ll go punch a table or something. No, that’s expensive. I’ll figure something out.

There was a Github issue that may be related that has been closed as of 8.1 https://github.com/renpy/renpy/issues/4070 maybe there is a more subtle configuration that can preserve your efforts?

Hi. The thing is, Ren’Py selects the more preferred setting by default, but even changing it manually doesn’t make any difference, because the process still runs on the CPU anyway. As for that discussion, I’ve already read it in full and tried every option and format mentioned. They were dealing with a slightly different issue. In their case, Ren’Py was jumping straight into the grave even with just a single video.

I had a hardware issue in the past and i used this faq https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/display_problems.html I thought this implied there was hardware acceleration available.
