New Climate Town Episode Up!
Hey Patreon,
It's that time again, we've got a hot new episode of Climate Town for you over on YouTube. This one is all about America's obsession with lawns. We untangled the history of why we all grow little golf courses around our houses, why that's actually kind of a huge waste, and some possible ways around it.
This episode took us all the way to beautiful Long Island where I spent 20 minutes rolling around in some grass to get the shot right, and then proceeded to have motion sickness for the next hour. Was it worth it? ONLY IF YOU WATCH THE VIDEO I GUESS!
We'll be dropping the bloopers when we get them all cut together, and we'll be doing one of our video town halls to answer any questions and talk about our plans for the end of the year, but in the meantime, please enjoy the video, and consider leaving a YouTube comment and smashing the like button under the video.
Thank you again for being the engine that keeps Climate Town moving.
best,
Rollie and the Climate Town team

Do we get a custom RSS feed for patreon only podcasts?
Another fantastic episode. I really appreciate all the effort you put into these. Here in the Netherlands, I’m exploring ways to get your YouTube videos shown in universities and high schools. Young adults deserve access to clear, factual information presented with context and explanation in a way that’s engaging and easy to relate to. That’s exactly what your team delivers. They don’t need influencers with hidden agendas, often financially motivated, spreading confusing and contradictory messages. It’s not always outright misinformation, but it’s often just misleading enough to distort the narrative around important global issues. Your content offers a refreshing and much-needed alternative. If I could give you guys a hug, I would. And if you need any help over here in Europe just give me a sign!
Another excellent episode! We learned something about clover. Now we're miffed about how much time and energy we used to waste on a lawn (happily that was many years ago). And thanks for taking my call today, it was super fun to chat with you, Rollie! I'll go check up on Peanut Butter... :)
I’m from Birmingham (lawns aplenty), but visited Tempe recently to move my son into college and loved the landscaping so much. I saw two lawns the entire visit.
Love the video. it's coincidental how veritasium recently also covered RoundUp. I wish there was some coverage of turf and it's environmental affects. It's the obvious suburban/HoA approved alternative to lawns, and there's a lot of misunderstanding around it.
What’s the mansiony collegiate looking building?
You go, Rollie. Stupid grass.
Love the greenscreen to the greenygreen topic. Well done! With the fan <3
Now we just need to grassify the Sahara Desert. 'Murika first! As always, great info and great show. You should put some jokes in though. ;-)
America is everything wrong with the world.
Always and forever going to be a fan of killing your lawn! Turn that space into a native pollinator garden, xeriscape, do literally anything but feed the water waste machine that is Bermuda grass!!
Good gravy this is vintage USGA *choice* cut Climate Town ❤️❤️❤️ Love it!
In the Netherlands, we call this 'grasphalt'. However, here it's not a lawn problem, but an agriculture problem. Dairy farmer like to grow something called English ryegrass and give it lots of nutrients. Grows fast, out competes every other plant and apparently cows really like it. The farmers like to keep the groundwater level low too, so the cows don't sink into the muddy field. Worms and other insects that live in the soil don't like that. So you get a monoculture of just English ryegrass, which also lacks insect eating birds, because there are no insects. Geese love it though; the geese population has exploded.
Another great video, although I’d like to see you try a bit harder to connect it to climate change.
Check out Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't on YouTube. He does a ton of videos about how to kill your lawn and replace w native plants
Seconding this. Love his stuff.
Are the bloopers just you rolling around for 20mins???
rollie come take my grass away ☹️😔
Hey man, if the number is 918-8709, i can read that through the blur effect and i highly recommend you just black square that puppy instead. Best of luck
You should call him to let him know lol
Oh boy! Lawns…yeesh…what a mess we’re in with that
Hey, weird question. Rollie, where did you get the shirt from the video. My wife is intrigued because it looks like Aldi colors.
Hey Tom! I got the shirt from a thrift store in Denver, Colorado last August. In an insane twist of fate, it's the EXACT same shirt as this dude is wearing in this fossil fuel propaganda: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOURX29-eFQ
Loved the video, I hate grass, what a waste of space. You got motion sickness from rolling around in the grass? I shutter to think of your childhood. Locked in your bedroom like Anne Frank the entire time.
Sadly this is adult-onset motion sickness. Every year or so I forget and try to go on a rollercoaster and get absolutely blasted for the rest of the day. The rolling around was a new low though. And did you make it to the end? You're featured in that screengrab.
Rollie be rolling alright.
