Was just re-listening to this episode and realized the end “have you ever seen a fat 90 year old”—my grandma turned 90 last year. Going strong, one of my best friends as well as my grandma. Considered “obese.” So yes, I have.
I think we should take it many steps further and ban all ads. Or corporate ads specifically. Advertise community, advertise support, farmers markets, bake sales. I've had it up to here with their obsessions with forcing us to think about buying every moment of our lives literally everywhere we go
My grandma was a fat 90 yo. She lived to 94! She only lost weight the last 6 months of her life when her dementia took hold of her. I much preferred my happy, fat, mentally with-it grandma
I worked at a nursing home in high school. Old people come in all sizes.
My grandmother was a fat 90year old.her french doctor advised her to stay the same weight since she was 60 he said "sure you could lose a few pounds but your healthy and anyway you don't want to get a lined face"
'Have you ever seen a fat 90yo?' has the same vibes of 'Have you ever seen a baby pigeon?' 🥴
My aunt lived to be 99 and had oscillating between 300-400lbs since she was about 40. I swear her weight helped keep her going that long! She was just a couple months from 100 <3
Listening back to this today I realised I have met a fat 90 year old. My great grandmother!
I really want to say that my grandmother in law was a fat lady about town and she lived to be 90 and my theory is it was because she was fat right up until she got sick in her 80s
Yorkies are the best! The 'not for girls' advertising was very successful.
Funny story — I came out to my mom a few years ago and while she’s trying to understand and accept gay people, she has had trouble. After some discussion, she told me “I think the reason why I have had a thing against gay people is because the only gay person I interact with on a regular basis is that one obnoxious guy at work who always brags about vacations with his boyfriend that his parents pay for.” The guy’s name is Jeff. When I heard the segment at 27:50 I lost my mind — sent the snippet to my mom and she said she’s glad she’s not the only one who’s annoyed by Jeff 😭😭😭 btw things are cool now. My mom has a way to go but she is good at pronouns and regularly goes to local drag shows with me :)
"Maintenance Phase: the podcast where we shout differently"
I have diabetes and the fact that in that first story they say that there would be x% fewer cases of diabetes based on people's shopping habits is so bananas and reductive. Diabetes is such a complex disease and there are a huge number of factors that we *think* can cause onset, including genetics (the biggest one), stress levels, environmental factors, etc.
Can we stop referring to any kind of food as “junk”? That sounds like diet culture propaganda to me.
"No adverts in schools" Whatttt do companies pay to advertise in schools in the US? (I live in the UK) PS loved to chat about our snacks. Monster munch is delicious
going to implore Michael to stop using the term "minority" as a replacement/interchangeably with marginalized/oppressed/etc. fat people are the majority of the US pop, non-white people are the majority of the global population, etc. not only is it incorrect, it's a useless diminutive. you'd be more accurate and show less bias by dropping it from your vocab.
Minority has commonly meant two things, not just in regards to the actual size of a population, but rather the power that they hold. So for example women are technically the majority of most populations (51% to 49%) but they hold a minority of power. That's commonly what's meant when referring to people being a minority.
Marmite is already vegan. Google it.
And i think Bovril is made from beef 😄
I would love to hear your take on the Galveston Diet!
Love a yorkie bar
Can y’all please debunk Parasite Cleanses? I have just been copying and pasting a consumer reports article about it.
You guys should talk “ectomorph, mesomorph, “endomorph” body types
Yes!!!
Please all of you watch the butterfield Diet on Youtube. It is so so so funny. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1NjTWvl8x-U&feature=youtu.be
thank you for that LOL
Taylor Swift controversy please!! She just changed the video and fat activist twitter is divided on how they feel! So I’m here for y’all to do an episode
I came here to say this! Would love to hear yalls take on this. I think it was a good move on her part
hoping there's a GLP-1/wegovy/ozempic episode coming up soon!
I’m sure you’ve already been inundated with this… but I’d love to hear your thoughts on the latest T-Swift controversy
I don't know if it's possible for her to have been hurt by anti-fat bias if she has never been fat. She's certainly been hurt by diet culture and our obsession with thinness, but she has always had the kind of body that our society validates and finds acceptable: thin and white. That's not to say she shouldn't speak out about her experience with eating disorders and toxic beauty standards. I am a thin white woman about her age, and I have had a terrible relationship with eating and my body for a long time. It sucked and it was terrible and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. However, I've never experienced the real, tangible disadvantages fat people experience in our society (subpar medical treatment, making less money than thin counterparts at work, being charged extra for air travel etc.). It's something thin people just don't have to deal with. I wonder if that was part of reason why the subreddit was upset. Maybe you were thinking of something slightly different than they were when you said "anti-fat bias."
Not episode worthy but navigating things with a straight sized partner can be taxing sometimes. Today’s flavor is salty, as in I’m salty that he gets to have his tiny spider veins dealt with because the doctor happened to notice them and ask if they caused him any discomfort. I’ve been begging for help with moderate varicose veins that cause all kinds of lower leg swelling for years but get told to lose weight. I don’t want him to not receive care in solidarity because that would be weird but I’m still mad it’s so easy for him.
I relate completely. He's incredibly sensitive to what I go through, but it's hard to see how easy it is for him sometimes.
Another news article: NYT discovers that overweight people can also have eating disorders. (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/18/magazine/anorexia-obesity-eating-disorder.html) Who knew? (Besides our podcasters, of course.)
The Lady Bragg (can't remember her name) was in a documentary about a cult!
Please could a better person than me reply on Jeanette Winterson’s Twitter where she has just now complained that the uk health secretary has said she won’t intervene on obesity and is herself obese? She likens it to smoking. I love Jeanette Winterson’s books - I really do. She’s a literary hero for mine - and a champion for LGBT and working class people. But she’s got form on criticising people for being fat. Didn’t she pen an awful diet book? She’s a very small thin person and I think she just has a blind spot (in common with many). I would really like someone to reply something compassionate and persuasive- maybe Twitter not the best place for that conversation. But she is a woman capable of deep thought and I think she’s worth trying to persuade. But I don’t think I’m up to that job!! Leaving totally to one side the politics of the incumbent it’s plainly a really stupid idea that a fat person is disqualified from commenting about fat issues, or making policy about fat people, by virtue of their fatness, and that only people who have never been fat are suitable for this task. Eesh.
I'm late to the party but man, I just got to the episode in sandman that depicts despair and it made me so sad (ironic?).
I clocked that too. I was like, "I'm this far in now you drop the fat-phobic BS?!" Plus the only other fat character was a serial killer. . . .sigh.
Do we know about the cult of Teal Swan? I would loooove to hear your take on that!
Chunk and the gooch! The only morning zoo I would ever listen to 😅
UGHHHHG I love this show so much. Aubrey and Michael, will you someday talk about Lean Cuisine? I need to know how many other kids out there were fed their mom's LC meals when we didn't have other stuff. I have this distinct memory of being like "but I'm still hungry" and my mom saying "well that's supposed to be enough food."
Ugh terrible salty food that amounts to like 200 calories.
Has anyone here heard of squareat? Squareat.com - I REALLY want to hear Aubrey and Mike try this and just go OFF on this.
I hadn't so I just googled it and JFC 🤦♀️
Hoping there's an episode in the near future about doctors increasingly offering bariatric surgery regardless of a patient's comprehensive health/blood work up showing good cholesterol, normal AIC, normal BP, low Trig levels...also some of these doctors actually suggesting starvation (actual words) as an option for weight loss.
My actual PCP recommended a "fasting diet" to me that involved at least every other day fully fasting. I was almost definitely not even small fat yet at the time (I'm large fat now), though that shouldn't have been a recommendation from a doctor to anyone.
RE: Braggs. I made this in the 90s and still have it on my fridge. I still find it funny. photos.app.goo.gl/KeUzmjj9V8E2d6DF6
Omg!!!!!!!! Angela Lansbury guys!!!! 😱😱😱
I absolutely howled during the Bragg episode when Aubrey was all "Bragg had two brothers and a sister named Louise"... did anyone else get Newhart vibes with "This is my brother Daryl, and this is my other brother Daryl"???? 😂😂😂😍😍
I wish someone was listening with me!! Im also dying at the jack and Meg white reference being another thing a 40 yo would know while a 21 yo would be baffled 😂
So I listened to the Bragg episode just now. I live in SB and worked in Montecito (have met about half of the cast of characters, Katy Perry’s parents dog took a poo behind my desk) that is the most representative story of how everything here functions. My god. I needed to just tell y’all that
Aubrey's whistle laugh 😵😂🤣😄🔪 honestly I death
100% just ordered jaffa cakes based on your advertisement! 😅🤣
Did you like them?
Are there any episodes planned for the skinny pretty white ladies on Instagram telling people how to intuitively eat and then mentioning that it’s not a diet but weight loss will happen🙃
Upvote for this one! Lol
Could we have a mini series on the dietary supplement/vitamin industry? I feel like there is so much to dive into.
Yes! Especially because Im curious about the science of vitamins. From what I understand, some of them work but a lot of them don't. I am very curious.
This is PEAK maintenance phase guys
Aubrey's laugh-whistle reaction at the end is absolutely the best comedic reaction I have ever experienced in my life. The timing was incredible, absolutely no notes.
Something that is also missing context-wise from the scanning food study is that the North of England is significantly poorer than the South and especially London - unless they conducted the study in places like Harrogate or York, poverty, income and access will have really impacted the difference in the types of food those consumers bought
That’s so interesting because in the US it’s the opposite (the South is much poorer than the North).
Other than some fatphobic/fatshaming comments, this TikTok made me think of you both. I only understood half the words because y’all have mentioned the bonkers-ness of adaptagens and whatnot. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRmKJd4K/ plus there’s a Gwyneth comment that made me giggle. Enjoy!
Lots of talk on insta yesterday about Karl. Some people suggest that you have Jameela Jamil on your show!
Please, I am begging you do an episode on glycemic load.
You need to do a show on the CGM (continuous glucose monitors) that diabetics desperately need. They are now being used by “weight loss programs” to “help loose weight by tracking glucose levels.” Weight Watches has teamed up with Freestyle Libre (Abbott).
Oh FFS. I hadn't heard about that yet. I'm a diabetic Libre user. This best not cause a shortage.
That Yorkie marketing got me too! (Also wotsits are the UK cheetos, but monster munch are also great)
I’ve only heard of Jaffa cakes because of GBBO 😂😂
Now that I know Mike is friends with Matt Baume I want a spin off podcast of Matt, Mike, Aubrey, and Sarah called "Your Gay About."
*You're Gay About, correcting my grammar before someone else does
The slide whistle nonsense just made my heart so full, thank you
I’d love an episode on the Medi weight loss plan. It’s a medically- supervised low-fat-low-carb diet. It’s very strict and expensive, even though several insurance companies pay for the weekly weight-ins.
Insurance also pays for the mandatory prescription appetite suppressant. Medi’s slogan claims that it’s “the one that works.” It worked for me for two months. I lost 31 pounds, but could not sustain it. I lost hair and craved food all the time. Weekly ketosis checks were also required. Anyone with an eating disorder runs a high risk of being triggered, as a detailed food diary is an integral part of the plan and is the basis for weekly discussions with a nutritionist. Thank you for your time, and I love the show!
Another idea I have for one of these media coverage episodes is this NPR story I heard in June about how health care for black people is worse, and they die sooner. Everything in the story could also apply to the treatment of fat people in society and in the medical establishment. The author they interview cites many studies and statistics to support her claims. I think she makes a very solid case. But if you look up her previous work, she writes quite a bit about how fat people are a burden to society and our medical establishments. She also writes garbage pieces about women who became disgusted with how fat they were, and all they had to do was ‘take care of themselves’, eat right and exercise a little, and boom! They magically dropped pounds and became better people. It’s curious to me how she could see that stigma, harassment, and denial of medical care could weather on the health and life expectancy of one group in society, but not another. Fat people according to her are still a problem we need to ‘solve’. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/06/14/1103935147/linda-villarosa-under-the-skin-racism-healthcare
I have an idea for an episode, or at least for a little side rant. All of these TV shows and national news coverage about the horrible impact of fast fashion is leaving out the fact that fat people are not a part of this trend. Fat people can barely find anything that fits them. They’re definitely not buying 62 pieces of clothing a year. And yet for some reason none of the coverage highlights that it’s skinny people causing all these problems related to fast fashion. Finally something they can’t blame on fat people, and only skinny people are culpable, and they conveniently leave that out.
This episode caused me physical pain laughing at Aubrey with the slide whistle (4 days post hysterectomy surgery and my poor tummy 🤣🤣)
I love you guys 🥰 I’m never ready for the episodes to end!
bonus content idea: a 2hr loop of Aubrey laughing over a lofi jazz track, like those relaxing focus/study/work videos on YouTube. Her laugh instantly makes me feel better ❤️
I would love to hear an episode commenting on the Gilmore Girls/2010s JLaw “Cool Girls eat large amounts of whatever they want but we’re still skinny” narrative that was heavily pushed for a few years, especially compared to interviews with the actors about simultaneously experiencing disordered eating. Love the podcast!
As an ex-Pat Brit living 4000 miles away from home, listening to you talk about the UK warms the cockles of my heart. I’d forgotten about Yorkies! The raisin ones (purple wrapper) were my favourite. We bought a load of Jaffa Cakes back with us from a trip home, and my kids opened every single packet before we could give them out as gifts 🤦♀️
There’s an amazing exchange between 33:52-34:40 around the role of marginalized people in conversation with people in the majority. THANK YOU for such a succinct description. I would love to use it in workshops around anti-oppression - fully attributed of course!
I believe there is a special place in hell for morning DJ’s, but that being said I would be a fanatic “Chunk and the Gooch” listener.
You don’t have Maltesers in America?! Also, Bovril is very much not vegan but marmite is.
We do have Maltesers but they are called "Whoppers" for some reason known only to the people who make up names for products.
OMG the idea if getting text messages about what I'm eating 8 TIMES a day is a NIGHTMARE - 'Imagine if no matter what you could never forget about food and your guilt and anxiety around eating it? Well join own new study ...!'
For the next media roundup, there’s gold in these hills. Gwyneth makes a frittata: https://youtu.be/wy3lYydJTec Could you please comment? I have lots of comments, but want to hear your banter and another slide whistle laugh
I mean. My fat great grandmother lived to 101, so…I don’t even know what Bill is talking about. Also side note.. just have to situate Jaffa cakes in their (Palestinian) historical context: https://fb.watch/fTkdjrL4s6/
I know this is going to sound really obvious, but I think it's worth mentioning: people eat "junk food" and fast food because they are convenient and are sold everywhere. They are called convenience foods because they are convenient. So I don't know if banning advertising is going to do anything. If I go into a corner store because I am hungry, I am going to buy one of the things they sell there. The things they sell there are, largely, candy bars and chips. People also buy it because it is cheap.
Precisely. I went to the McDonalds drive in for the first time in probably 20 years recently because I was running around between work and appointments and my family was home with Covid and I had to pee and we needed to eat. As far as I know I solved the problem of needing to eat and I didn’t drop dead from it.
I startled my coworkers because I was laughing so hard at Aubrey's flute-laugh-whistle! But this might an interesting bonus episode topic: meditation and mindfullness. I've been recommended it in therapy, for my chronic illness, it's in every health podcast, it's recommended by the US gov, "mindful eating" as an entire concept, it seems like another magic bullet for everything. I know it can be really helpful for some people, but I recently learned meditation can have frighteningly SEVERE side effects, and it seems like there could be a cultural appropriation element to it as well? I heard about it first on other podcasts with Dr. Willoughby Britton from Brown Medical School, it might be interesting to explore!
When I was in grad school I gained like 20lbs fairly quickly so I went to a nutritionist (it was 2006, I didn’t know any better). Mindful eating was the big thing at the time. To demonstrate it, she had bring in a food that I really liked but wasn’t “healthy” (I forget how she phrased it). I brought in coffee ice cream. She told me to eat a spoonful with my eyes closed and keep it my mouth and really savor it and think about all the flavors and textures and how good it was…then she told me to open my eyes and said well, now don’t you feel like you would eat less of it if you treated every spoonful like this? I was like what? This makes me want to eat the whole pint, just with my eyes closed. She was genuinely surprised by this response. Brought me one step closer to realizing how dumb all this stuff is.
Do you work with a gay horse Iconic
Chunk and the Gooch! I'd listen every drive time 🤣
However much I pay a year for Patreon it is a bargain. This episode made me laugh out loud so many times. I want Hobbs saying fuck me fuck me fuck me atBill Maher as my ring tone.
lol me and Aubrey falling for the same Yorkie trap
More slide whistle!!!!
So many good t-shirts could come out of this amazing episode but I’m dying for one that says BUT HAVE YOU TRIED LOVING YOURSELF??
Lol yes! I think “have you tried loving yourself?” should have its own episode too.
I'm so deeply indebted to you for bring full-throated laughter into my life, as so few POSTIVE things manage to do that (I'm good on the "I force myself to laugh for fear of having to weep" moments - no shortage there). I wonder if you guys have seen/have thoughts on the Darren Aronofsky movie The Whale. I have no interest in spoiling ANYthing for Brendan Fraser, but I read a very interesting review on Slant about it. https://www.slantmagazine.com/film/the-whale-review-darren-aronofsky-brendan-fraser/
Someone to look into: Gillian McKeith
YES I would love to hear their take on her
A little different from the typical wellness topics, but it would be interesting to see an episode on the "loneliness epidemic." I'm reading a book called Connectable and it says "Being lonely increases your chances of dying young by 45% – far more than excess eating or drinking. Alarmingly, roughly 60% of American adults say they’re lonely, up 7% since 2018."
I'd be very interested in an episode on Jazz Jennings and right-wing media responses to her weight gain.
I need to say this or else my head will explode. “Have you ever seen a fat 90-year-old”? Yes. I have seen at least two. They were both my relatives. Bill Maher, please consider the number of known 90-year-olds you have seen in person *at all*. Statistically, probably not that many, regardless of size! Unless you work in elder care, or unless you go around asking random old people their ages, you can’t reasonably have an answer to this. This is complete gut-level-assumption nonsense. I hope those late relatives of mine haunt him for a while and knock down all the picture frames in his house. Edited to add: whoops you made the same point lol. I was too blinded by rage to finish the episode before commenting. I stand by my wish for his picture frames to get knocked down by fatshamed ghosts.
oh god yorkie bars! as a girl growing up the boys were so mean if you even expressed interest in eating a bar lol, my brother would take them from my hands! advertising is nuts
ugh! maybe people in london were buying less food cause we’re all struggling to afford food and energy? that study was awful! also the study doesn’t account for the income differences in the north and london!
Would love to hear your take on a TV show we had in England back in 2000's called Supersize Vs Superskinny. Wiki link for a summary: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supersize_vs_Superskinny
Good god that was an absolute car crash wasn’t it
Epic episode….and now I really want to send you both care packages from the UK with Yorkies, Jaffa cakes and monster munch!!!
I was screaming at nobody in the street about the text-based outpatient wellness program: did anybody see improved cardiac outcomes? Was the only recorded metric weight loss? Why would you have an outpatient wellness program that doesn’t track health-related outcomes? Maddening!
The accidental laugh-whistle was my favorite thing 🤣 It was so adorable and hilarious, I’m so glad you kept it in ❤️
My dad once bought me a magnet of a sheep that said “Ewe’s not fat, ewe’s just fluffy!” so that comment about calling children fluffy instead of fat just felt like a stab to the heart. Did I mention I was nine?!
Wft That is horrible, I'm so sorry he did that!
This episode left one very important question unanswered: which one of you is “junk” and which one is “the gooch”
Chunk = Aubrey, The Gooch = Michael. Side note, a gooch in Australia is the same as a taint in America. Obviously I piss myself laughing each time they’ve said it
Again, the people who see me on the road as I’m listening while driving probably are wondering, “What could possibly be that funny?!”
I haven't finished this episode yet but wanted to recommend an article I thought was pretty great on this! It's mostly about films becoming more violent and less sexy, but it covers bodies and mentions some Maintenance Phase-esque points: https://bloodknife.com/everyone-beautiful-no-one-horny/
Where can I get a "gremlin prevention squad" T-shirt?
Yes!!! I’d love one!
Running to the comments to scream about the preschool teacher who sucks ass!! I’m an early educator and everything about what she’s doing goes against best practice by being a shit head!!
I could not. stop. laughing at Aubrey's accidental slide whistle 😂 That was a delightful moment!
If you could do an entire special episode that is just an hour of your intro music on loop, that would be wonderful. It’s so soothing.
I "sing" along every time
There are a lot of comments (yay!), so someone may have said it, but on the British ad ban - um, 1. People in London tend to be wealthier so more able to afford fresh/harder work foods than those in the north, 2. I assume these didn’t control for behavior changes by having to scan your fucking food and 3. The bizarre extrapolation into less ob*sity. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
MIKE AND AUBREY MORNING ZOO SHOW!
I was listening to this ep in the middle of the night because I couldn’t sleep and “Junk and the Gooch” made me laugh so hard the bed was shaking.
I think the comparison to the gay rights movement in the '90s/00s is appropriate. Like some people are starting to get it but as a society we're not there yet
Would love to hear a perspective of a healthcare provider, namely physician, who is anti-fat bias and how they integrate this with their practice including negotiating conversations with colleagues treating the same patient. They HAVE to be out there, but in my practice as a physical therapist have not encountered a single one in 3 states.
My brother got Yorkies all the time when we were kids and I was so jealous, but I was such a stickler for rules that I never had one. Still don't think I've had one to this day 😢
Ahh you’re not missing much. They’re just kind of…mediocre.
the last segment is absolutely “love the sinner, hate the sin” rhetoric for fatphobic people 💀
ope second to last
THÉ SLIDE WHISTLE 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Pickled onion Monster Munch is great. I horrified my parents the last time I visited them by eating it because they were like why? Also the only ads I ever notice at tube stations are the ones for theaters.
I’m so mad I had to listen to that bill maher clip.
I wish every time someone said "I'm just gonna go ahead and say it, let 'em come for me, [banal mundane bigotry]" the universal response could just be beeeeeoop. PTHHPHBBBHPHPHPBPHHHHTTT! and literally nothing else.
Sorry to interrupt but I absolutely need to know - which one is Junk, and which one is The Gooch?
As a girl growing up in England I was obsessed with Yorkies! I even ate a fully wrapped one out of a bin at school once 🙈🙈🙈
OMFG my both of my grandmas were fat and lived to 95 😂 FUCKING BILL MAHER
I feel like they let Maher off easy! I wanted a full takedown! But I get their stance on him not even being worth it, because his shit is so lazy and boring.
The Cheetos equivalent is Wotsits, surely? 😂 tho Monster Munch are truly a god of snacks
Bill Maher's fatphobia is only matched by his Islamaphobia. He is so proud of his unearned arrogance and hateful ignorance.
I love you both so much. Always more sound effects!
Aubrey's sound effects are SO CHARMING. Please more sound effects. Everything else is great too, but the sound effects are just magic.
Thank you for leaving the accidental slide whistle laugh in I am CRYING 😆
Bill Maher: “Have you ever seen a fat 90-year-old?” Me: “Yes, my grandmother from whom I get my body shape genes, asshole.”
I feel like this isn't the first time you've randomly used "Jeff" as the name of someone to hate. What did a Jeff ever do to you? Lol! Love the show!
1. I want "We'd be shouting about that too but we'd be shouting about it differently" on a tshirt 2. I am deeply unfamiliar with Maher but with the "do you know any 90 year old fat people" I thought my head was going to explode. My father's family is very short and wide as a rule, my grandmother was always heavy and was definitely fat at the end of her life. Which was at 97 (and she died in a car crash so he can suck it)
I fucking swear Michael saying ‘Jaffa Cakes whip ass’ is never NOT going to make me laugh.
"wip ass" is going to be my new favorite expression
Aubrey, Michael, I will meet you both in the ICU with a friggin stroke due to that Bill Maher clip... bring the whistle.
Two things. 1. It probably isn’t THAT unfair to make the assumption that everyone in London (certainly in central-ish London) travels on the tube… And 2. BOVRIL IS BEEF 😂 Great episode as always - the bonus ones might be even better, because I’m not expecting them so they’re always a delightful surprise 😍😍😍
Today was a no good, bad day, but I genuinely laughed out loud at the side whistle laughter. You guys are great <3
God why is Bill Maher such a dick? The comparison to Pierce Morgan 🤌
Also I laughed through the Bill Maher clip bc it literally sounds like an I Think You Should Leave sketch LMFAO like come on guy you sound like a spoof of yourself
More slide-whistle content, please
I lack the words for full expression of how loathsome I find Bill Maher's brand of smug shittiness. It's like the theme of his life's work is "I've identified what I believe to be a problem and now I'll be an asshole about it for a while, helping no one while emboldening my viewers to adopt assholism as a lifestyle."
I think that's a pretty spot on description!
As always, y'all are delightful
OMG choked on my drink at the “mouse” cameo.
As a queer person who works for a very progressive company, I DO prance around the office, and I do it for everyone who was an adult in the early 2000s when that discourse was going on LOL
Thank you for your service.
Aubrey accidentally laughing into the slide whistle was the highlight of the episode. I am sure my coworkers think I am deranged for cackling by myself in my office.
Also I’m mad at you guys for making me listen to that Bill Maher clip. He just needs to be a thing of the past already.
Why must every single discussion of health or food insecurity or land use any topic remotely to food or medicine or exercise be about weight? Drives me up the f’ing wall.
The biggest problem with that first TFL obesity study is the huge wealth disparity between London and the North of England. Makes a big difference to whether you can afford a "superfood" poke bowl in Central London Vs having to buy junk food because it's cheaper.
Good point. Also, I would buy more of my consumed calories outside of a supermarket in London too because there is a fancy, relatively cheap (compared to a restaurant) fast-casual place every 40 feet!
As a fellow try-hard, I’m living for “Try-Hard Corner with Mike.” Aubrey, I so hear you on the blame and shame to pity pipeline. The worst part is that people truly feel that their pity is empathy. Great observation about people feeling so secure about their own identity as a good person that it’s hard to have a conversation that holds them to any accountability. Thanks for all you do, M&A!
Thank you for exposing Bill Maher’s anti-fatness! He is also anti-woman and a racist - love that more and more people are being made aware of his horrible views and how badly he misuses his platform. Can’t believe there was a time where we thought he was a liberal voice in the media, probably just seemed that way in the right-wing reactionary cesspool that was the Bush era.
He's also anti-vaccine and a total Covidiot.
also I’ve also done an exchange semester in Sydney and TimTams are just down right evil. I actually find them too sweet and yet every package I ever opened suddenly, magically emptied itself before I could even realise it.
Can you guys talk more about how the marginalization cycle? ("this group we discriminated against is going TOO FARZ!!") Because I have people who were in marginalized groups literally believing the same sticht in groups where they're privileged in and it's annoying as hell to listen to. Would love to show them it's the same shit in different clothing.
Imagine living in a time where white supremacist movements are legitimized, children are dying in schools, and the wealth gap keeps getting wider, and thinking the biggest problem in the world is people are fat.
I mean that’s the point isn’t it? If every person in America is spending all their mental and physical energy worrying about how big their pants are, starving themselves, and most importantly blaming themselves for the all the ills of society when they gain a few pounds, we have nothing left to fight for the important stuff.
When you told about the program with people getting text messages with tips about what to do / eat, but not losing any weight after half a year, my mind went immediately „yeah, but did they get healthier?! What about any other health indicators? Did they feel better?“
I was losing my shit! This sounds like it could be a program to actually improve health outcomes but it sounds like they tied it exclusively to weight, which, !!!!!!!!!!! Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
“Terrible in a profoundly uninteresting way” is an amazing diss 😂
"There should be at least as large a societal effort to reduce the number of gremlins as there is to reduce the number of fat people" YES queen say it! this should be your permanent tag line
Great episode. It's funny that the media roundup dropped just as all this conference on hunger and health media coverage is everywhere.
I’m so angry about it
Can you do a full episode debunking weight = health? It's sprinkled all throughout your episodes, but I want a comprehensive episode I can send to my family and clients to just open the door to reality.
They have an episode called "Is Being Fat Bad For You?" that might be a bit more what you're looking for!
As a Brit I absolutely love hearing you guys talk about Jaffa cakes and yorkies... Though totally agree, the not for girls logo was ridiculous 🤣 they still sell yorkies but without the whole "not for girls" thing these days
During the mid 00s I worked for an import shop that carried a lot of British candies, including Yorkies, and I remember buying a few as gag gifts for girl friends who would dig in immediately. Great marketing, hahaha.
Fewer gremlins! More fat positivity!
Do You Work With… a gay horse?
Malteasers are in our fridge we brought them back from Scotland. So much better than whoppers
Gotta hand it to the guy who complains about bending science to meet our needs and then is anti-vaxx
"There's ideology in science" Well, duh? There's ideology in everything, because it turns out everyone's got some kind of ideology.
So true about Bill Maher. He sucks!!
when you said bill maher it was literally like a jumpscare
He does I don't know why so many people don't seem to know this yet.
I would love a world where we ban all advertising and all reactionary pundits. Together we can build that world! This episode also made me want to hear Aubrey and Mike talk about Susie Orbach's Fat is a Feminist Issue for that combination of great and also terrible views.
I ate so many Yorkies when I was a kid cause I wanted to spite the stupid chocolate bar
This reminds me of an appointment I had with a rheumatologist recently where she said (paraphrasing) "you can be healthy regardless of size" and then immediately praised me for losing weight and told me to keep it up to reduce my joint pain. Like, girl, what? Are you hearing the words you just said? 😅
"Terrible in a profoundly uninteresting way" - Piers Morgan in a nutshell. Nice work!
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11177645/Britains-secret-services-recruit-spies-BMI-30-technically-obese.html Another bad UK story was this one recently, caused a load of not very funny James Bond puns
Thank you for another great bonus episode! Description of Bill Marher/ Piers Morgan "Terrible in a profoundly uninteresting way" 🤣🤣🤣
Right? I want that t-shirt
The Jaffa Cake appreciation warmed my heart!
the first thing i heard about bill maher was his antivaxx shit. he's basically unknown in germany and i only know of him because of my anti antivaxx activities.
So nice I have to listen to it twice (in a row) xoxo
Same!
On the yorkie conversation - did you know that after the kick back on the 'not for girls' campaign - they genuinely launched the exact same candy bar in a pink wrapper? Absurd...
Oh Sadiq (or Sadiq’ social media team). Disappointing. On an unrelated note… I would love to hear Aubrey & Mile talk about Jeanette McCurdy’s book, since it has a lot of discussion of weight and dieting mixed up with fame and family dynamics…
I've got a long commute this morning and this makes it so much better. You guys are the best, xoxo love from Montréal.
Lol the Yorkie bar tangent reminds me of when Dr. Pepper did that 10 calorie drink that’s FOR MEN and it made me so mad I was like yeah I’m a LADY and I could drink this but I DONT WANT TO BC I DONT LIKE DR. PEPPER
Honestly would love to see a kardashian ep! Their impact in the diet space is so astronomical especially recently. Would love to hear you guys speak intelligently about how truly dark and terrible their impact has been.
I second this!
The British snack conversation had me in stitches! The Yorkie marketing was outrageous, I was a kid and tiny feminist me was furious, but they aren’t even that nice. Jaffa cakes for the win! 🙌🏻
It was the only chocolate I could reliably convince my mum to buy me as it activated her feminist rage
Please do an episode on Intuitive Eating 😊
Yes please!!
Ugh Sadiq Khan! I agree with him on so much and then this…
Disappointing isn’t it
