Bonus Episode: Jordan Peterson vs. Twitter
Mike has updates for Aubrey on Jordan Peterson, who has been working overtime to be a colossal jerk. Again! This time, he's peddling COVID misinformation and taking aim at fat people and trans people. WHAT A CHILL DUDE.
You can play the episode directly through Patreon or use our RSS feed to add it to your podcast app. Here are the instructions from Patreon. And as ever, if you've got future bonus episodes you'd like to see, drop those in the comments here.
See you next month!

UPDATE: In the original version of this episode we confused Remdesivir with Paxlovid. Many of you pointed out the error so we removed the line. We really appreciate you letting us know!

Aubrey, I love hearing your knowledge and insight ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Aubrey ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ thank you.
Ugh. Just re-listened to this in late 2025 during full-on MAHA dystopia - me hearing Michael at the end saying his wish for 2022 is that these topics they cover become less relevant in the future…😭😭😭 whyyy are we in this terrible timeline
As an Ace cis woman who tried to force myself to date straight guys for many years, Jordan Peterson's anger feels very familiar. If you're already trained to think of female bodies as possession in service of your pleasure, any disruption to that expectation is treated as an affront. Viewing female (or assumed/expected to be female) bodies that don't "serve that function" draws out a reaction - like drinking soap when you thought you were served water. It's not all straight people, but the straight people who have biases but are still able to see others as humans tend to assume these dehumanizing are not that different from themselves, and so "we shouldn't be so hard on them." And then you add on the intersections of everything - it's so terrible.
This one didn't make it onto the paid Spotify feed, will that continue to be updated?
I need y’all to know that since I first listened to this episode, every time I see or hear Jordan Peterson’s name, image, or voice, I immediately hear in my head “NO ONE WANTS JORDAN PETERSON’S BONER.” It is a very helpful coping mechanism my brain has adopted.
Jordan Peterson literally scream tweets at Elmo.
Graham Lenihan is the full-time guy. He is literally doing transphobia 16 hours a day, with no family to distract him.
Right wing bodybuilding YouTuber Dr Mike Israel had a great little rant where he pointed out that there is nothing constructive about insulting fat people, and the "I'm just trying to help them be healthy" is obviously made up. He intersperses in this rant implications that the people who make fun of fat people are in basement dwelling losers.
Small addendum about how shitty it is to go around telling fat people they are going to die: my dad has always been fat and he used to be a smoker. Courtesy of everyone "helpfully" commenting on his mortality, I had recurring nightmares about my dad dying for OVER A YEAR (around age 11-12). Fuck everyone who says stuff like this and fuck them twice for being such an unfeeling POS to say it in front of their children.
Listening back to this and I can’t help thinking that JP actually did find the swimsuit model hot and couldn’t handle it. It’s like homophones where the lady doth protest too much. Anyway, thanks as always for your service.
I was thinking this too!
A whole FLOCK of canaries, swarming the news offices, if you will?
nobody wants Jordan Peterson's boner. Truer words never spoken.
And now his Twitter account was reinstated. Together with Trumps. No words.
Wouldn't it be amazing if he just fucking died?
Hey! I'll have you know I'm a hot, fat lady. (thank you menopause...)
Where is the menopause supplement episode!! I am in the hot, fat lady menopause camp...
ok. Her name is Shayne-a, not Shawn-a. Here is a link to a point-counterpoint - the show that the SNL parody is of: https://youtu.be/cESACuuh6kM/ .I am loving the Scarsdaleepisode, but since I was alive and watching 60 minutes then, the Shawn-a was freaking me out.
It was also a little gag in the film Airplane! There is a montage of TV snippets talking about the imperiled plane and among them is a Point / Counterpoint: "Shayn-a! They bought their tickets; they knew what they were getting into, I say, 'Let 'em crash!'"
Friends! Late to the party but listening to the Scarsdale Diet Murder episode and I realized I know a novelty song about dieting from the 90s that references the murder. I've been singing it since I was a kid without knowing what the song was talking about. It's "Cold Pizza for Breakfast" by Christine Lavin, and the bridge goes: "Herman Tarnower would never approve I can hear him (I can hear him - I can hear him) Spinning in his grave He could be alive eating pizza right now Except for when it came to dating women The good doctor did not know how to behave ya ya ya Herman was healthy But Herman is dead (Pizza surely didn't do him in) A Pizza surely didn't do him in (Pizza surely didn't do him in) Jean Harris is behind bars Lookin' quite sad And think, do you see what I'm gettin' at You tend to kill when you're skinny But not when you're fat"
I just want to say Worm Wars was fascinating 😊🪱🪱🪱
Loved the new episode (and all the episodes) I'd love to hear your take on That Sugar Film - which I watched when I was in highschool and which created some troubling beliefs and nasty restrictions...
WHEN IS NOOM
(respectfully)
Mike and Aubrey on Apple News: In Conversation!! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/think-again-the-health-and-wellness-myths-almost/id1577591053?i=1000576689622
Honestly SO excited for every episode but now especially excited about the recent crossover AS WELL AS mike going to YWA to talk with Sarah about OJ again!!! My two favorite podcasts, doing crossovers, my life has reached a peak 🤣
Yes yes so excited I can’t even
Favorite sticker-worthy Aubrey reaction this episode: “Make It Gauche!”
I’d love to see an episode on HerbaLife! MLM + fat phobia + weird ass culture
The Herbalife cafes disguised as smoothie shops!!
Having Sarah on Maintenance Phase makes me so happy 🥺🥺. I have a pipe dream that Sarah and Michael have a podcast together, Michael and Aubrey have a podcast together, and Sarah and Aubrey have a podcast together; all with frequent guest appearances by the 3rd leg in this podcast school. Scarsdale diet is a cathartic consolation prize.
So we just need the Sarah + Aubrey podcast, then. *rubs hands together, searches couch cushions for more $ for budget for that next show’s Patreon*
I’m guessing you get a lot of suggestions to cover addiction. I do have a drunk horse in this particular race, as I’m in recovery for alcohol addiction. I’d love to hear your take on the war on drugs, the history of AA or the current stats on recovery rates!
omg new 90 minute episode featuring Sarah Marshall? You guys DO love us! <3
SO EXCITED!!! Loved the episode!!!!
I don't think I'll ever be convinced that Jordan Peterson *isn't* extremely attracted to fat women and he's just protesting too much. Who actually spends so much time obsessing about the (lack of) attractiveness of someone who isn't living in their head rent-free?
Yes I suspect that too of people who object too much. Especially when they say " they're glamourising obesity!" I always think, so you think they look good, right? Glamourising means you make it look attractive... so they look hot to you and that upsets you because you don't know what to do with that lol
I wonder what your take is on the F factor, and if the supposed (for lack of a better word) adverse side effects make sense. Also in the podcast “Fed Up” they say that the founder of the diet said that people can’t get EDs from diets, I GASPED when I heard that and can’t wait to hear your reaction.
I hope yall come out with the noom episode soon. I never used to get their ads but recently they have become inescapable on YouTube and my heart is full of hatred for them so im looking forward (more than the usual amount) to you guys yelling about it
I’ve seen it everywhere lately as well, it almost convinced me to give it a try except that it is way out of my price range.
Have y’all seen the unwell show on Netflix? Made me think of y’all! Especially when a tantric coach is fondling a man and tells me some crap about the weight will melt off when he starts enjoying sex?! It was absolute baloney.
I'd love an episode about appearance expectations of gay men. It was briefly mentioned in this episode while talking about Elliot Page's GQ cover. As a cisgender woman, I don't know enough about when this started, and I see how hurtful this standard is to their community. I learned some about it in the movie Fire Island, but would love to know more! I don't want to broach the subject with my gay male friends because I don't want to trigger anything that might be painful to them. Also, you were mentioned and recommended by Virginia Heffernan in an episode of the podcast Trust Me, and it brought me much joy. She has a lot of respect for both of you.
Hey, sorry this isn't a comment that pertains directly to this episode but just hoping it'll get picked up. Is there anywhere that you can recommend for getting good advice about eating disorders as a fat person? My local medical services aren't geared towards dealing with this and I'm finding the fear of getting bad/unhelpful/actively harmful advice plus the difficulty of doing my own research to be really triggering.
On Tumblr, "heavyweight heart" and "big fat science" have been helpful for me.
I love you guys! And a t-shirt with “this shit is exhausting” would have at least one customer 😍
I would love it if you guys did an episode on popular songs about body image - like All About That Bass and Funny Fat Friend, I feel like so much stuff is said about these songs!
It sounds absolutely bonkers! I never read this book but I do remember reading in one shitty diet book about the “French paradox” that French people eat plenty of meat dairy and fat and yet aren’t fat and have low levels of heart disease bla bla bla. Which turns out to be not a paradox as fat isn’t actually bad for you - but also - fuuuuck French people (women in particular) are harsh with themselves and each other to the point of not allowing themselves to eat - not exactly the paragon of healthy behaviour after all.
Tbh I spent this entire show thinking you were following up on Pete Evans 😂 I can’t tell all the conspiracy bros apart anymore
Oh, I have been waiting for the French Girls Don’t Get Fat episode. I read this book as a teenager, and a thing that sticks with me to this day is she talks about how in America people eat less fruit, but “even the fruit is larger.” I can’t remember if she implies that we’re all getting fat off of apples, but she definitely makes note of it in a way that sounds negative. I’m 49 now and to this day, I will sometimes catch myself thinking “that apple is too large” at the grocery store. Fortunately I’m a lot smarter now and immediately remind myself that the only apple that’s too big is the one I won’t finish, because old apples are gross. Apparently some people feel like this view on apples is fully justified: at an older age when I was a lot wiser about bad diet advice, I went to see a doctor who decided, unprompted, to give me a worksheet on how to lose weight. The first item was “instead of a sugary snack like an apple, if you are hungry, have a cup of broth.” I don’t know what other bad advice was on this worksheet because I immediately threw it away and decided to never see this doctor again. Yeah, don’t eat a nutrient-dense piece of fruit, HAVE A CUP OF SALTY WATER INSTEAD! That will definitely satisfy that craving!
"CALM DOWN" INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX
I just joined Patreon because of your statement about worm wars! I loved it. I've shared it with several co-workers and plan to use it in some data literacy training I'm doing this fall with faculty. Sounds just like how higher ed approaches "improvement"!
i’ve seen other comments about this, but i would LOVE to hear your thoughts/research on weight loss surgery! when i read “her body and other parties” i really thought the author had made it up as an exaggeration of the lengths people will go to lose weight since the book does have lots of fairytale elements.
I just want Mike to know that I thought the worm wars episode was dope. Thanks. Love you guys.
Same here! I really enjoy the forays into international development. I didn't really know much about it before this podcast, and I find it so interesting but also infuriating, like all Maintenance Phase eps.
Hey guys, long time fan (since the beginning!) and I absolutely adore the show and both of you! Listening to you both has been really educational and healing for me while both recovering from ED and learning to accept my body. Please please PLEASE do episodes on the HCG diet and Dr. Phil's son's diet book for teens (https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Weight-Solution-Teens/dp/0743257472), both of these had a massive impact on my life and it would be amazing to hear you guys break them down, debunk them, and help arm me with some facts!
Hey guys! I love you both and the podcast! I have a question: how do thin people educate themselves, and then become advocates for fat people? How do we combat anti fat bias
Listening to this podcast is a great start. My own thoughts on how to be an advocate: challenge people when they’re fatphobic. When fat people stand up for ourselves, particularly when we’re knowledgeable about the dangers of diets and the very high failure rate of dieting, we are treated as if we’re in denial, or just defending being fat because we don’t want to be thin. It’s crazy-making that you can factually demonstrate that only 2-5% of people who diet successfully keep the weight off, but no one believes you specifically because you are fat and these numbers actually impact your life. So to me, the best advocacy is to say it so that I sound more credible. Challenge people when they’re picking on a fat person, or making rude comments about a stranger.
I put on my to-do list to look at this "study". It's a non-peer reviewed poster, and the text fits on <1 page. It's much more about "what's in this particular database" rather than about the value of Ivermectin. It's most likely the work - a clean, exploratory data analysis - by a student or other junior researcher. And I somewhat disagree with Michael that it's "bad science" because the question "what contribution can this particular [rather large] database make to knowledge about COVID medications", including delineating what the limitations are. Which, to the initiated, it probably did from the outset. Michael is, of course, completely correct to say that scientists need to stop communicating about scientific results as if they happened in a little bubble, and I'm not super happy that, even with the retraction, the researchers use jargon such as "reduction in mortality" (of which there was none demonstrated, not in the non-technical sense of "reduction" which implicates a causal link - the scientists seem to use it as a synonym of "numbers are lower on this side").
The F-Factor series is engrossing! I also heard about a podcast called Reel Fat People - two fat women with backgrounds in film studies evaluating and discussing representations of fat characters in TV and film (lifted from the show description). It's just getting started but I have high hopes based on the intro episode.
So I have just learned about the F-Factor debacle and it is wild. Definitely worth an episode.
I’d like to have an episode on microdosing magic mushrooms and LSD

Saw the Bill Maher video from 3 days ago….it is actually brutal to watch. Would love for Aubrey and Michael to rip all his “points” apart (although a lot of them you already have throughout other episodes!) I know this isn’t his first time showing the world how anti-fat he is, but this was wild to me. I think it’d be interesting to look at how so many self-identified “progressives” are still SO anti-fat and are so actively harmful towards fat people.
I just joined the patreon and have been listening to the bonus episodes and they are a RIOT. I am such a fan of the podcast, it feels like I have learned so much + learned ways to formulate things I was confusely feeling, as a fat person (and I second the "gut health" motion. Thank you so much for your work <3
I would love you guys to do an episode or two about ‘gut health’ - it feels like it’s absolutely everywhere. I feel like there might be something legit in there but it’s also so very nebulous/vague/open to nonsense that I think it would be interesting!
Ooh second this! I have Crohn's Disease and have definitely seen legitimate research on this but equally it feels like people (and esp wellness companies) are playing very fast and loose with the term to sell whatever they're shilling.
Do Kevin Trudeau next. That guy is ripe material for maintenance phase.
mental decline from increasing age + beef only diet?
Another good take down of JP came out this week. This one breaks down his debating style and why he's so challenging for most people to debate effectively. It's a short 3 hours but a good compliment to the Maintenance Phase pods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSNWkRw53Jo
I think it’s very telling that Jordan Peterson comments on his lack of attraction for [model name] as if it’s a personal offense. It seem that he feels women owe it to him to be attractive. That is a central role for him, and if they don’t fulfill it, their transgression is a personal attack.
I think the visceral reaction to a fat woman on the cover of a magazine is a kind of panic that, in their mind, these kinds of men feel like “even the fat women” are suddenly not “available” to them sexually. Assholes like that are probably the kind of dudes who think “at least I can always fuck a fat chick”, but if fat women are now models then maybe more people will find them more attractive, and so those men think they’ll NEVER find a woman who will sleep with them, or be grateful for their attention.
Well fat women are constantly told to be grateful for any attention they get from men, good or bad but especially bad. They like to fuck us but won't openly date us let alone marry us. So if we are the ones that they not only reject but receive social standing for rejecting us, what happens to them when we the fats gain social standing? (Answer: I really don't care lol).
Please please please do one on Andrew tate
It’s so interesting to hear you say David Icke’s name, because I thought it was pronounced “icky”. 😆
“Do tell, fucko!” Needs to be on merch 😂😂😂😂😂
Your new ep on Pete Evans sent me into a deep flashback to undergrad history😩 because David Icke is a Holocaust denier! And we literally looked at him as a case study of forgery and doctoring history.
Yay yay yay! Listening to this today! Love it!
Can we have another '80s episode? This ep was great, but JP is popping up left and right in the UK, and the transphobia is... Wow. So this morning, I revisited your Angela Lansbury episode bc it's one of my 'happy place' podcast eps when I'm feeling down. Suddenly I'm consumed with the phenomena of 'home workout' and 'aerobics' tapes - did Jane Fonda get super problematic in workout videos? Why were leotards suddenly 'the' workout outfit? What happened to Richard Simmons???? (He was constantly made fun of and then... Vanished?). When did this peak? I want to know these answers, but maybe it's best to leave it in my child brain bc the 80s were cruel. Y'all rock, and deserve nice happy things. Keep it up! (and take breaks)
Even when the next detail about this dude is worst than the next, I will never not be hung up on the whole all-beef diet thing. *quietly vomits for all eternity*
I love/ hate the Pederson coverage. 🇨🇦 Here, been yelling about him from day one. He’s such a transparent sham to me but he was/ is excellent at duping white men.
Same, and the young white men that follow him are not okay. I've taught some of them. They seemed anxious and unhappy, were losing friends because of their toxicity too. The self help/white male grievance combo seems very toxic and is hurting everyone.
What sucks is you google Yumi Nu now you get a ton about JP. What a way for her to have her moment hijacked.
Love, as always. Request for a show about the Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) cult! Particular focus on Joel Fuhrman, creator of the “Nutritarian” diet popularized in his book, Eat To Live.
All I could think thoughout this episode was "who exactly told fuckin Jordan Peterson about *period.*"
"Do tell, fucko!" is such a great line it might belong on a t-shirt.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around Pete Evans and who the people are paying $900 for what is basically a britta water filter on his website.
Ok also- I LOVE the sports illustrated swimsuit issue!! Ever since Ashley graham was on the cover I get it every year. I specifically searched out the Yumi Nu cover, which was on the back shelf at Barnes & noble, not up front like Kim & Ciara, but I found it! It cost like fifteen dollars lol
One of the best trans musicians I am aware of posted a selfie with their wife at one of JP’s conferences and I am still 20 weeks later absolutely shook about that post. I’m not going to say anything but I definitely sad reacted it and their comment for defending why they went to begin with. Super sad.
I'm always surprised at what michael doesn't know, you know? Not in a sh!tty way, just, it's surprising to me he doesn't know what tartar and carpaccio are. He mentioned once now knowing who rasputin was either, and I thought that was surprising.
To be fair, I don’t know what either of those food items are either… might have heard these words in passing but no image conjured. Re: Rasputin, personally I find historical info hard to absorb and retain, especially since so much of it has been distorted by white dudes who aren’t telling the facts correctly anyway. 😂
So many great quotes in these bonus episodes 😄😄 listening to you guys has empowered me to speak up about anti-fatness, and telling people when they’re promoting anti-fat culture has been so healing for me. A former acquaintance who runs a tarot/modeling instagram account posted a video of Jordan Petersen (before you guys even did your episodes on him), and it was about how there is an “ideal” waist-to-hip ratio for women that supposedly indicates fertility. Like if you’re a woman and you’re over this magic ratio then your fertility rate goes down. I messaged her privately to say hey this is a hurtful uninformed message you’re sending. You’re encouraging women to measure this ratio and draw conclusions about their fertility. And she did not respond in a friendly way, AT ALL lol. But she did take the post down. The whole thing made me very anxious; I’ve never been in a heated social media exchange like that. But I feel really good about speaking up now when people are taking part in diet talk at work or my in-laws make comments about my weight. I love you guys!! Thank you so much!!!
Oh my god, that video and its distribution sounds horrible on so many levels! Thank you so much for doing the labour of speaking up about it and defending your position, which is so not an easy thing to do! 💛🌿
A book club friend recommended JP’s podcast to me an I just didn’t have a way to reply to her. It’s so uncomfortable. She and I like each other but have very different life experiences and opinions on a lot of stuff. I want to send back the Maintenance Phase podcasts about JP but don’t really want to get in a ideology war with this person. I do so appreciate Aubrey and Michael taking the time to discuss this and how mean spirited JP is. I guess if I’m backed into a corner I’ll have some information to share with her.
Not JP related, but after Pete Evans part 1, I have been EXPLODING to express: Dear Pete, Are we seriously proposing that hunter gatherers did not breastfeed their babies? Are we really saying that our Paleolithic ancestors let their milk supplies dry up and instead supplemented with labor-intensive, hard to transport, spoilable BONE BROTH? This is the most absurd, faux-historical, showing-your-ignorant-whole-ass suggestion I have ever heard. What the what, A person who genuinely thinks you should feed your babies however works for you, but probably that's not bone broth Okay cool, on with the show
I'm surprised you didn't mention him justifying the invasion of Ukraine because Russia is "eliminating degeneracy" or whatever. Literal nazi shit
Oh my god, authoritarian tolerance- god how I laughed. You guys are the best. I’ve been seeing some former friends being warped by internet subcultures and I feel sure they would be Jordan Peterson stans. I kind of wish they could listen to this but also recognise they’d probably have the same reaction as I would to listening to Jordan Peterson. I agree with Aubrey that you have to think carefully about outcomes when you post on social media - but I think a lot of people are actually just enjoying being provocative and that’s all there is too it - they don’t want to persuade or engage really - just to be like I THINK X - or more probably I HATE X AND ESPECIALLY YOU!!!
Noted athlete, Kim Kardashian.
If Jordan Peterson had been a woman, she would long ago have been deemed mentally unstable and unfit to be a public figure. But because he has a dick, he's instead considered a provocative commentator
Is that last video you guys were talking about the video that the clip where he says “up yours liberals, we’ll see who cancels who” comes from? Lollll
I'm nonbinary and getting top surgery soon and like, Peterson's a goddamn jerk and a joke and all, but his "nazi butcher" comments about surgeons still really hurt. I'm trying so hard to just exist and people like this have to be so cruel.
Congrats on your surgery! (I'm nonbinary and had top surgery too <3 )
I want a “don’t be needlessly mean to people for no benefit to yourself” t-shirt
It’s so stupid we are at the point that people are actually mean to you on the internet for being nice to someone else.
I'd like to share a quote from the deranged ravings of a madman named Jordan Peterson. "Up yours woke moralists. We'll see who cancels who." This wonderful quote is from the end of his rant on why Twitter was in the wrong to suspend his account after he spewed misinformation about Elliot Page.
It took me so long to believe that was his actual quote, and not someone parodying him...
Of course Peterson doesn’t need to comment on Elliot Page just existing, in the same way he doesn’t need to comment on Yumi Nu. That’s the thing about a sexist, fatphobic, and anti-trans agenda; you don’t need reasons, you just need enough people who will say “I too feel uncomfortable when I see things that aren’t exclusively in my interests.”
I looked up a picture of Yumi Nu and she’s the most conventionally attractive woman like HOW can he say she’s not beautiful??
Not only is she gorgeous, she’s not even very fat. As Aubrey noted, she’s maybe “small to medium.” As a “plus size model” she’s probably like 16-20. Even if you are a fatfobic bigot, what fatal health problems can you possibly associate with being that size?
Anyone else want a “consistently meh” shirt?
I would like a "noted joy thief" shirt
As a trans person I really appreciate you guys acknowledging the fact that trans people have been talking about the danger of jordan peterson for YEARS and pointing out the fact that whenever we panic, people ignore us, after which it turns out we were 100% right to panic.
I live in Ottawa and was right in the middle of that convoy bullsh*t. It was pretty rough. Especially when everyone outside of Ottawa was pretending we were making it all up 🙄 I knew he commented on it but didn’t make the connection to the Jordan Peterson you were talking about until this podcast.
Sorry about that. People probably didn't believe you because people in Australia literally lied about truckers protesting. There was one, for one day, on one highway that was union organised - nothing to do with covid or lockdowns - and people ran with it saying that truckers had blocked every highway into NSW to protest vaccination and lockdowns. Didn't happen.
So, one of the things about ivermectin is it is VERY easy to get (well, before Covid) and you don't need an Rx...because it's sold at every feed store in existence. You can buy ivermectin sheep drench (great for preventing heartworm in dogs of large numbers on the cheap), various ivermectin pastes and other topicals or tablets depending on the animal or application necessary. It is SO easy to buy. It is SO cheap. Like, it takes a drop of liquid ivermectin for about every 5lb of canine - it's not a lot different dosing for other mammals, just different ratios. You can get an entire lil 4oz jug for about $20 *pre* pandemic. It lasts for years. Horse paste is a little more expensive but a higher concentration iirc. So no... These folks are taking **OTC livestock meds**. This is the fish antibiotic situation all over again unfortunately. If only people could afford to go to a Dr or trusted em, yknow?
He's moved over to Ben Shapiro's media company thing since leaving Twitter. Very unsurprising move from them both
Yes, a very unsurprising move since Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh speak the same phobic, problematic language. He'll fit in well with them.
I don't think I had ever heard Jordan Peterson talk until his video was turned into a meme and I cannot understand how people take him seriously when he sounds like that.
100% "Reflect & Adjust" I just yelled "YES!"
Was really surprised when Aubrey was reading out the Elliot Paige tweet and I thought for a brief second Jordan Peterson respected his chosen name and pronouns and then had that immediately corrected
Ugh this episode is such a breath of fresh air
I know there are bigger issues with all of this. But what irks me is that both Elliot and 'actor' are gender-neutral. So this dude made extra effort to dead-name him and be hurtful.
One important element of the media “calling people out” is that outside of the US many countries have terribly regressive libel laws, including in the UK and Australia (where I’m from). If the Guardian Aus had called Pete Evans a racist he could have sued and even won because truth isn’t always a viable defence (I’m not a lawyer so don’t understand exactly why!) Australia had very few “me too” exposes for this reason, there were many more people being investigated but journos couldn’t print it. HOWEVER, having said all that, what the press could do is just not give these people a platform!! That’s always a fucking option!!
Is Michael secretly dating Joe Rogan? Sus. Michael blink twice quickly if you need out.
Part of the reason Peterson gets so angry is that he is used to being centered as the ideal consumer (straight white dude.) The idea that any other type of person might buy the SI Swimsuit issue or watch Umbrella Academy means he isn’t the center of the universe. He is an absolute child and this episode is brilliant.
Canadian here…could not have been funnier timing. Listening to this on the way to the mailbox only to receive a form letter to support litigation against travel restrictions. The letter not only A) supports the trucker convoy but B) references Jordan Peterson. Chef’s kiss.
Oh who sent it to you and where do you live? I haven't heard of this or gotten anything
Friendly neighborhood infectious diseases pharmacist here! Loved the discussion of the ivermectin vs. remdesivir study. One quick thing to point out is that remdesivir is NOT a component of Paxlovid (which is a combination of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir.) Paxlovid is a pill given by mouth. Remdesivir is given only intravenously. Remdesivir was the first antiviral we had available, and we mostly use it on hospitalized patients. Paxlovid came along later, and we mostly use it on outpatients. The main point of the study critique still stands, though. Thanks for the episode!
The CalmDown-Industrial Complex is a concept that will frame media studies for the internet era
This is fantastic.
Aubrey: How many kids are looking at GQ 🤣🤣🤣 This dude needs a life and should stay off Twitter 🙄
Next time someone is 'concerned about your health', ask them to pay your medical bills!
Playing devil's advocate: he DID find Yumi Nu hot (because like, she is), and he's mad at himself for finding her hot, so he has to let the world know that he's not attracted to her to soothe his incredibly fragile ego, because the only thing he's good at is self-projecting his insecurities onto others, especially women of color.
Good point. He probably finds Elliot Page hot too.
Jordan believes there's an objective archetype of beauty the same way he believes there's an objective archetype of order or chaos or "the devouring mother". In a worldview where you think your personal associations and standards are actually the universal subconscious beliefs of humankind, then "obviously" anything that's different from your beliefs must be some kind of manipulation or coercion.
Wow, this is so well-put. Read in tandem with the comment below, it’s like JP is projectively larping an uncomfortable inner battle between his own id and superego on the external canvas of society.
Wait are you sure that person who emailed you read the correct book? 😆 Really needed this episode today yall. Thank you.
Jordan Peterson's fury at his lack of boner for Yumi Nu reminded me about something. I know now that my first serious boyfriend was super toxic and emotionally abusive. A couple years ago, a memory popped into my head which should have been the reddest of red flags at the time. This was back in the mid 1980's. He could not stand Madonna. The reason? "She's not a beautiful woman, but she acts like she's a beautiful woman." Yikety yike yikes
I know you probably have a ton of different episode ideas in the pipeline, but I think people could really benefit from a deep dive into the world of trans healthcare studies (like how the oft-cited Swedish study that started in 1970 and went until like 2018 showed trans people were at higher risk of suicide, which.... yeah, for like 40 of those years trans folks had to exist in a culture that treated them terribly and only in the last decade of the study were people trying not to treat them as terribly). Or the "ROGD" study brouhaha.
"This is who John Money is, and this is why he was not studying anything similar to trans-affirming care. Anyway..."
I’m an ICU nurse, and we had a chiropractor admitted who prophylacticly took Ivermectin, and ended up almost dying because of it, tanked his sodium, seizures, the whole nine yards. Also, is there a plan to cover the clusterfuckery that is chiropractic “medicine” in the future?
Ooo I hate chiropractors.
Mike's repeated use of "swimming suits" is absolutely sending me.
Jordan Peterson had a moment in like 2016 and everything he's done since has been him attempting to stay relevant. I can't wait for this fuckwad to fade into obscurity.
God l love you both
Cant stop picturing a mine where miners have started just sweeping the thousands of dead canaries out to the sides so people dont step on them
"The doofusphere" is my new favorite term LOL, thanks Mike!
This episode is *chef’s kiss* - thank you again for everything you do xx
Why do CIS hetero men get so upset when no one cares about their boner? It's not that novel, dude.
On Paxlovid myself at moment. It is indeed a miracle drug. Just wish it didn’t make my mouth taste like metal.
I actually had to take ivermectin to treat scabies (be mindful before borrowing people’s sweaters, guys) in october 2021, so right as the whole myth around it was really blowing up (I believe joe rogan had just recently mentioned it). My doctor had to sit me down and say «I’m sure you’ve seen this in the media, but you are aware that it doesn’t treat covid, yes?» and it was such a surreal conversation i cant help but laugh when i think about it. I was thinking «oh my god. this is the funniest timing this stupid skin condition could’ve possibly had.» Got a funny look from the lady at the pharmacy too, and another clarifying question that I knew what the drug was for. 2/10 experience all around.
He is getting so unhinged that I kinda feel genuinely worried about JP... He definitely needs to have his platform taken away for his own sake as well as for the health of wider society.
Mike and Aubrey, your JP commentary makes me feel safer and saner in this unsafe and insane timeline. Thanks for all you do!
Please release this on the main podcast, everyone needs to hear this.
I'm a researcher on SARS-CoV-2, and while I doubt any of my work will be mainstreamed the way some has been (I'm in a smaller lab) we still have to think about what we publish and how it will be interpreted by the public. I'm glad that the authors voluntarily retracted, but I still think it never should have been published. Also, I don't know if it would work for a bonus episode, but I've been thinking about all the weird things I "learned" in Health class (in the 2000s in Georgia) and I thought it might be fun to source those from the patreon and debunk them? For instance, I was told that I would burn 3X the calories if I exercised in the morning before eating anything, that you're supposed to apply moisturizer towards the middle of your face (to prevent wrinkles???) and of course all the absolutely insane fake statistics that we get about sexual health.
Ugh! Yes, inaccurate sexual health info taught in schools. In the mid-'70s I attended a Catholic college prep school for girls. Part of our health class was reproduction. We were taught repeatedly that we ovulate and were fertile in the 3rd week of our cycle. However, they never told us when our cycles began, at menstruation? after menstruation? how long after? Needless to say MANY unplanned pregnancies.
Aubrey's comment about Jordan's fatphobia being tied to anti-feminist/MRA ideas & behavior reminded me so much of Matt Gaetz's recent comments about abortion activists being too fat a/o ugly to have to worry about men wanting to impregnate them. These a-holes are so unoriginal and transparent...
The episodes where you yell about Jordan Peterson episodes are the only places where my podcast feed and my husband's podcast feed intersect :P Although he did absolutely lose his mind when I played the BioCharger ad from the last Pete Evans episode. Thanks for bringing out listening together with content about unhinged, terrible men
the benefit of the doubt discussion is so right on! like, no one needs to hear you out jordan👶🏻🥄🍼
you make my day ❤️
YESS i love you both ty for the bonus ep
Ooooo have you heard the new Hidden Brain episode?? "Reframing your reality: part 2". They measured all sorts of things when people were given the same milkshake. If they were told it was diet vs decadent, the stomach hormones were different! They were the same calories!
The joy I feel when I wake up to a new Maintenance Phase bonus episode is immeasurable!
Hey! Just an fyi, Australian media laws are super hectic around defamation, which is why I think The Guardian put that disclaimer around Pete evans. Who is obviously an awful, racist, anti semitic man. Australian media has to be super super careful around what they publish, even when it comes to national shames like Pete and Belle Gibson.Media outlets are constantly in court for very slightly insinuating people are racist etc etc. If you are interested, there is some big trials about this area on atm including one with a legit war criminal called Ben Robert- Smith. Just thought it might be helpful context, THANK YOU for the great podcast!!!
I would love an episode on the NHS (yes I’m British). Not many Brits, let alone people overseas, realise that huge swathes of the NHS are privatised/ run by profiteering companies, and many of our politicians have very close ties with these businesses. Read ‘How to Dismantle the NHS in Ten Easy Steps’!!
I’m an American married to a Brit and lived in Scotland for 5 years. I was shocked at how much privatization and medical profiteering there was. It sounded all too familiar to me. While there were some things I loved about the NHS (like free prescriptions), I’ve also never seen a more fatphobic medical establishment. It was shocking. We were both denied care on the regular and told to go lose weight. My husband was dismissed when we asked for sleep apnea treatment. They told him to go on a diet. Turns out he has a double deviated septum from birth that no diet will ever change. Shit like that made me so mad. Free healthcare was no good to us since there were barriers to diagnosis and treatment. I believe healthcare should be free, but also fully accessible and not making anyone wealthy. Thanks for bringing up the NHS. It’s not the paragon of medical virtue that my American friends think it is.
To say I am giddy with excitement to listen to today is an understatement 😆
FYI: Paxlovid does not contain remdesivir! It consists of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir (a very common antiviral drug). Remdesivir is only available IV and inpatient (source: I’m a 6th and final year pharmacy student!)
Came here to say this…remdesivir is IV, used to be used only by people hospitalized, now you can also prescribe it for people at risk for severe COVID but has to be infused 3 days in a row. Paxlovid is 5 days of pills. Love the show!
Thank you Aubrey Gordon for literally being the first person I've heard to straight out say that Yumi Nu is hot. When his garbage tweet went viral I literally just stared at that cover for like 5 minutes before I even noticed words were attached.
yes! Yumi Nu is super hot!
Omg more JP slander!
Yaaaasss 🙌🙌
It honestly makes my day when we have a new bonus to listen to! Thanks for all the work you both put into these :)
Yay!!!!!!
Ooooh fun I’m excited for this
juicy
