This episode is so blessed 🙏🏼 Y'all are great people, you make us better people, thank you for letting us eavesdrop on your conversations ✨
So I somehow forgot that I subscribed to this Patreon (hello ADHD!) and went back to listen, so I just listened to this episode and.. Thank you. The last bit is so fucking true and it's just gotten worse in the world, and somehow I am finally starting to recover from burnout and trying to figure out how to build up the friendships that are still there and mourning the ones that can't or won't be again. It's hard to admit, but it's also nice to know that I am not the only one who deals with this stuff.
Omg...this ending has me in tears 💔 Aubrey is so right, we really have been hanging by a thread emotionally for the past decade. I was never prepared to see a genocide on my phone, and it's absolutely gutted me. I feel so seen right now 🫂 And I also have no-text-back guilt like Mike that consumes me sometimes. I think the takeaway that we all should give others---and ourselves---a little grace is exactly right ❤️ Also I've done these 36 questions with many partners over the years, most notably my one and only sugar daddy when I was 21. It made his heart & wallet open up so much more 😂
It brings me such joy to hear Aubrey wheeze laugh for a full minute like Muttley from Wacky Races. ❤️
This episode was weirdly healing. Thank you Mike and Aubrey.
I have listened to this episode several times and the cyber truck thing always sneaks up on me 😂 I am crying laughing in my garden right now!
I could t love this more!. My son is a second year PhD student at Brown and both of my parents were professors!
Right so the thing I did to convince people I understood what a crush was and felt romantic and sexual feelings “normally” was to say I was attracted to my brother 🥸 I know people think about me sometimes and that’s what probably comes up in their heads and I smile to trick my brain into thinking everything is okay omg
Mike joking about hitting Aubrey with a cybertruck had me in tears. Thank you
Aubrey, I had the EXACT SAME fire safety reaction as a little kid, terrified that I would get out and my whole family wouldn’t- what was it about those fire safety presentations??
Same!! I used to lie in bed thinking about what I'd grab if the house was on fire and knew how to pop the screen out of the window to escape. It's wild. It's still a deep fear.
It's wild to listen to this post Nov 5, 2024. It still rings true
CANONIC THORNS FAN???? LOVE YOU AUBREY PTFC BABY
Michael went to WWU? Am I one of like maybe 5 alum that want to hear what Michael thought of it
Even when turning good news into bad news you guys still cheer me up and I love it!!!
aubrey highlighting how all of us have been white knuckling to hang was understood by me to be saying lightly how dark everything is to the point of like wanting to give up, give in and like literally d*e and that just made me feel seen for her to say the quiet part out loud, as i’m rly struggling lately (((and always since like 2014)))))
Same. I thought everyone else had moved on to "normalcy" again so it was validating to hear her say that. And to read your comment! I'm right there with you.
this episode cheered me up greatly from feeling like steaming bird shit. i parasocially and truly love you both so so much and it was neat to learn some facts of yalls life :)
Omg, Michael, was the European studies MA at Aarhus University???
When Michael said he practiced his anecdotes to pass as straight, I thought "damn that's like some sort of panopticon" and five minutes later the hosts agreed to never bring up Foucault or his panopticons
It's oddly comforting to hear that Aubrey also does the anxiety-related non-communication. I've felt such shame about that for so many years and it's just nice to hear that someone who I admire also struggles with that. Thank you both for your vulnerability!
TRULY FACULTY BRAT ENERGY!! No wonder I like both of y’all so much 😂😂
Im listening to this late but my goodness you two make me smile ❤️ I loved this episode Also Aubrey has the greatest and most joyful laugh, it’s infectious!!
My friends and I like to say her laugh could cure cancer. It's amazing.
omg, just listening to this now - AG is such an influence! can't believe you worked in early childhood in Portland. hope you still track all of the progress that's happened in that here. a bunch of us are fans and you have influenced our thinking!
I missed you guyysssss ❤️
right? i'm always SO HAPPY when a new episode lands
I’d love for the Noom episode to happen! I remember y’all taking about it coming at one point - hope it’s still on the list! :)
Noom is definitely a good candidate for maybe a Grifties episode.
This episode is wonderful. I laughed so much!!
This made me really happy!
Do you think you could do an episode on That Vegan Teacher? You guys are the best!!
A vegan teacher? Interested I'm going to have to go investigate
I kid you not I live a few hundred metres from an actual penal panopticon !
Great episode! Listening to you guys already feels like I'm hanging out with my hilarious and nerdy friends who are riffing on cool shit, but then to get to know you a little better is extra! 🙌
THE CYBER TRUCK JOKE: This was Mike’s “Hey Big Pink” moment! 😹
Have you guys heard of Joe dispenza? He's . . . Interesting
I’d love to hear a bonus episode about The Love Diet murder for hire scandal!
I have to know Michael’s thoughts on Foucault
I LOVED this episode. Well, truthfully I love every show. EVERY. My secret fantasy is to be best friends with both of you. LOL! So very much in common. Keep 'em coming! The more the better!
The two of you are a treasure! My son and I love your podcast and enjoy each of you so much! This episode was hilarious! You both also shared some personal info and, while I think some of it has been alluded to in previous episodes, there were vulnerabilities that were new, as well. I admire that! The line that almost made my son and me “pee the most” was not that one, although obviously it was funny, but when Michael quoted the minivan driver: “did you realize you ran over a miniature gentleman back there?” We were driving and I almost had to pull over, we were laughing so hard! Aubrey, I swear to god, if anyone tries to “memorialize” you like they did Mama Cass, I will kick their self-righteous ass!
I've never left a Patreon comment in my life up until now, but this episode raised a vital question and someone has got to ask it: ...When Aubrey says, "We are really dating ourselves" at 2:50, was that *meant* to be a pun?
i listen to this podcast during work and “MIKE PEES THE MOST” had me really struggling not to laugh in front of my manager. thanks!
Just an FYI the 36 questions to NOT fall in love with someone list was rebranded and sold as “36 questions for teachers on back to school institute days” list.
This was a super fun listen, thank you!! Looking forward to your next episodes making fun of diets because those are my favorite and are life affirming 🤣
I love Aubrey’s deep concern about going to a fancy college and how that would be perceived, meanwhile me, a UK listener, racking my brain to think of a single US university that isn’t Harvard ‘I guess it must have been Harvard!’
I love when you guys go light hearted for bonus episodes! The main feed content is amazing but also pretty heavy stuff most of the time, so when y’all are trying Erowen food or chatting about the 36 questions, it really breaks up the heavy content!
You guys should talk about MSG, impacts on health, and the racial undertones (or overtones) involved in the vilification of it as an ingredient!
Yes!! I was just thinking this the other day!!
I just gotta join the other nerds asking for a Caroline Dooner episode. Pretty please.
The wheeze at 9:20 LOL I love it so much
EXACTLY!
Omg the way Aubrey describes Brown. I’ve been trying to explain to ppl why I’m weird about it. It’s nice to have a semi light episode 😁
37) when you die what kind of urn do you want to be placed in? And why is it the duck urn? ⚱️🦆
Both your laughs fill me with JOY. Thank for for being the bright spots in so many people’s lives.
I second this!
Mike, I did the exact same thing with rehearsing social situations over and over as a kid. And in some ways I still do it now (like how I'm repeatedly rewriting this reply instead of just hitting se)
I didn't hit send, my dog's nose hit send on my screen while she was trying to steal my ice cream.
Lol my Oberlin orientation kicked off with “welcome to Oberlin, sorry you didn’t get into brown”
My Colby orientation didn’t say it outright but could’ve (but Dartmouth)
"WoAH, Michael, some of us are ~BOTH~!" 🤌
"michael discovers the collaborative nature of google docs" was a real highlight of this ep
Yeah it cracked me up!
Sheldon and Penny did this on Big Bang Theory! I'm here for it!!
This episode was exactly what my soul needed. So funny but still with a lot of heart.
This episode is so fun but if we need to go back to making jokes about dark things PLEASE tell me everything you can find out about the conspiracy theory that is prediabetes and what happened with the Look AHEAD study.
So great, I will be listening again soon!
The laughing is so good. Made my day. ❤️💜
Loved this one so much
Maybe I’m just incurably neurodivergent, but I am absolutely tf NOT going to talk about the last time I cried or what my relationship with my family is like on a first date. Talking about the last time I went to the zoo, however, sounds rad! I have a great zoo near me, and either the person I’m on the date with is also familiar with it, or they can talk about the zoo near them. (And if they are familiar with the zoo near me, but don’t think it’s amazing, then I know it’s time to shove breadsticks in my purse!)
Omg the "your relatives name, age, and when they were born" is diabolical 😆
Right? Might as well ask for their passwords and social security number! 😂
I loved this episode so much 🥰🩷
This episode was super fun! I will say the best superpower is either flying or the power of probability (think Domino from Marvel), but you know. Maybe Mike just wants invisibility due to his anxiety, and I cannot really fault him that 😅
Aubrey saying her greatest achievement is the Oregon Trans Healthcare campaign making me cry on the bus on a Friday! I love so many people who are alive because of that work and all these years later she's still out here making my fat trans life better 😭😭😭
Wow. Thank you, Aubrey, for that closing. My mental health has been so rough this year, and it was building up for a long time too. It wasn’t until listening to you say that we may be making things worse by not acknowledging how rough things are for me to realize that yeah. That’s it. I know it’s rough and I know my friends know, so it seems like we don’t have to say anything. But hearing you say it reminded me that not talking about hard things never really makes them easier.
I really needed to hear that part too 🥺❤️
The segment about getting owned by children is killing me. I’m a preschool teacher and today one of my students asked “Do you wear glasses because your parents didn’t love you enough?”
I really want a MIKE PEES THE MOST shirt.
why do psychiatrists have such attitude
I was referred to a psychiatrist recently for med management and it triggered a brand new, full on depressive episode. It’s been nearly a month and I am still not doing ok. Truly one of the worst experiences of my life. Thankfully my PCP is still willing to write that script for now, but she’s not willing to mess with it, meaning that if I want my dose to be changeable, I have to keep trying to find a psychiatrist 😭
As a fun aside, there is a podcast musical based off of 36 Questions with Jonathan Goff in it - called "36 Questions" on all podcasting platforms. That was my first exposure to the concept so I couldn't help bringing it up!
I was listening to the moon juice episode a couple days ago and reflected on how silly/happy everything felt. This was lovely. Thank you!
I think it’s the moon juice ep. that contains one of my favorite quotes from this podcast: “this tastes like a hate crime!” 🤣
would anyone else be excited to answer the questions to not fall in love or am i just audhd and my own special interest 💀
No you’re not alone!!! I have listened to this episode twice now, and both times it hit me like a ton of bricks that absolutely do NOT want to disclose some of this stuff to a new potential partner before I know them well, but the other stuff sounds fun! I managed ice cream stuff for a while and it was my favorite part of the job! I love the zoo near me, and the last time I went we got to see a huge tiger taking a nap with his toebeans pressed against the glass! All of my grandparents were born in the US, but my great-grandparents were born in Germany and now I’m looking into citizenship by descent! Anyone who can’t make a broad prompt into an interesting story is probably not the right partner for me, nor is anyone who thinks it’s great that I don’t have the fine tuned social barometer to be able to answer the “good” questions without inappropriately oversharing. Like, I want a partner who can at the meta-situation of a first date and conclude, without me having to explain it, that it’s not cool to try to force emotional vulnerability out of someone who doesn’t know you well enough yet to know whether it is wise to trust you. (To give a simpler example of this same principle, it’s a big green flag for me if a male partner says something like, “I can pick you up if you’d like, or we can just meet somewhere if you’d be more comfortable with that.” Like, I don’t have to tell him that I am factoring in the possibility that he might murder me, and he’s not indicating that he’s going to be offended by the idea. I feel like these intimacy questions can really suck people in to divulging way more information than they probably should with someone they are not *already* intimate with.) So uh. Tell me about the last time you went to the zoo!
what a great episode! love you guys 😍
Aubrey having to go to therapy at age 6 because she learned about fire safety and got severely anxious about surviving while her family didn't hits SO HARD! I remember every time we learned about some safety thing I wouldn't be able to sleep for Days out of anxiety 😭 it's kinda funny looking back but it was nice to hear of another person who did that lmao
Same! I made a "go bag" when i was 8 after my parents made us practice getting out of a 2nd floor window. The trauma i forgot i had!
I’m 10 minutes into this episode. I just woke up my sleeping toddler through my involuntary bursts of laughter. Thank you for this/this is v unfortunate. Well played.
In case x z
I KNEW IT WOULD BE BROWN! lol I also went there and have very, very similar feelings, Aubrey!
I am terrible at responding to people and from the bottom of my heart: it's fine. So many people feel the same way, and you being shit at replying gives other people permission to be shit at it too. We're all down here in the mud with a frankly bananas and historically unprecedented number of people to get back to, most of us are stressed about it, and I just refuse to feel guilty about it. You're doing fine and any friends worth the title understand and probably feel the same.
Thanks for always being amazing Mike and Aubrey! ❤️
It was brought to my attention that trump was elected EIGHT years ago and now I’m paralyzed in a sense of surrealism like how the fuck
Oh no now I’m in love with both of you
Want it on record that I would LOVE an episode (or 7) of Mike just listing all the jobs he has had
I know parasocial stuff makes you super uncomfortable but fucking hell, I love you guys so much. No other podcast makes me laugh so hard and think so deeply. Thank you for lending us your voices as we hurtle through the chaos of this world x
Can the next episode be super dark to make up for this
🫡
Does anyone have a link to the 36 not-intimacy-building questions? Need it for reasons !!
Speaking as a former running start student.....I am not surprised AT ALL to find out that Mike was a running start student. There is such a specific energy that cannot be replicated anywhere else 😂
Biiiggggg communication anxiety-haver over here—have tried dozens of tricks & settings & apps & mantras to “overcome” it, but the only modicum of progress I’ve ever had is to manage the expectations of my loved ones (and assure them I’m doing my best). Thank you Aubrey for giving voice to this!!
Yep, same. I have a really great therapist and people who are supportive of me, but progress has by no means been linear.
This is every conversation with my people: light! Funny! Vulnerable! The world is on fire and we are barely hanging on. Kthxbye
Hashtag digital-communication-response-amnesty for all. Im quite the worst at responding to texts or DMs and how could folks not think i don’t care enough to answer after awhile ✨i n t r u s i v e t h o u g h t s✨ Thank you for saying that all of us are hanging on by a thread, I think in this wild hellscape we actually were successfully gaslit enough to make ourselves ignore our own and collective need to process and grieve and give grace and maybe also have a fuckin fit, so reminders are appreciated. 💜
I had to pause the episode to laugh when Mike said “anal”. So not what I expected!
Well, this was absolutely delightful. I honestly enjoy listening to you two talk about anything, but this was such a treat ❤️
I was on my bike when Mike said “anal” and I almost drove into traffic I laughed so hard.
Omg Aubrey the being condescended to in the car dealership is SO REAL. I went into an auto parts shop to ask for windshield wiper fluid for my car, asked for the specific kind, and the guy was like, "Good for you!" 🙄
I demand all 36 questions in a series of despair-balancing bonus episodes!!! (Please please please, but also no worries if not, no big deal, forget I said anything, just gonna go overthink this comment k byyyye)
We have another very ~light and fun~ bonus ep coming month after next!
AAAAAHHH I HAD THE SAME FIRE DRILL SURVIVOR GUILT ANXIETY!
Holy shit you guys!!! It’s so validating to hear others publicly saying that we’re all clinging on to the last threads of sanity and function! I legit feel like I’ve been in fight/flight/freeze for years now.
Super interesting bit from my therapist: Sometimes the Freeze response to Anxiety can mimic Depression -- being overwhelmed and not able to do anything or make decisions. I usually score much higher on the depression assessment, so previous Drs focused on that. My therapist had me reach out to my doctor specifically about anxiety and how it is affecting sleep. 😬👍
Never loved Aubrey more than when she chose a selection of USWNT players and Nicole Byer. 😂❤️
Am I the only Autistic person here who thinks they're both AuADHD? I really enjoyed this lighter episode. The topics are really interesting, but I'm not sure they'd help you fall in love. On the subject of education, I went to uni for my BSc in 2001 - 2004 and barely paid anything, I think I owe £16,000 on that, after 20 years of interest. I went to uni for my MA in 2016 - 2018, and that was £10,000. I had a panic at the thought of owing £26,000, and then I realised that at least I'm not in the US. I plan to go further into debt to do a PhD, eventually, but even so, it'll only cost another £25,000, and my total debt will be less than some people pay for a year studying for a Bachelors in the US. I feel so sorry for you all, having to pay such ridiculous amounts for an education.
No you are not! Wanna fall in love?
Absolutely LOVED this episode. Foucault gets a shout out but no Debord? Also, used your story about anxiety as a jumping off point in talking with my wife about our son's anxiety. Not only entertaining, but useful!
When Michal answered the "Is there anything you've dreamed of doing" question, I nearly fell over 🤣
I know this is an inappropriate thing for me to ask a stranger, but I really do want to know WHY he’s never done that!!?! I just always kind of assume that adult gay men have?? Which I shouldn’t - last time I checked the stat, a full 25% don’t - but still. Answer the question, Michael!
As guy who also has been deeply anxious most of his life and had to learn to deliberately form friendships while living abroad for the first time, it was super cool hearing Michael express that. It helped me put some words to a period of my life that was a substantial reason why I was able to figure out how to navigate social interactions, and I think the change in cultural context really gave me the tools to figure it out. Still anxious as all get out in the US though 🤷
“Can I tell an anxiety related story real quick?” Really hit lmao
TRUE friendship is your straight-sized friends offering to kill you in a way that will overshadow the usual narratives about fat people dying
Yes I loved her laughing as he repeated “I’m sorry it’s not funny I’m sorry “
You two are the best 💚
Mike, I am also in the "anxiety exploded during the pandemic" club!
hope your brain gives you a break soon, friend 💜
FUCK FOUCAULT hahahaha reading that guy you can just make the jack off motion the entire time lol he clearly gets off on how he writes lmao
Made the very unfortunate decision of taking a sip of water right shortly before Mike shared the story about being burned by a 6 year old. I almost did a spit-take on my cat.
I was driving!
Beautiful humans, glorious laughter. I’m glad I saved this one to start the day with. 😻
But would you invite Sophia Bush to the dinner party? 👀
I’m nervous to listen because I used these questions on my first date with my now-husband. It’s not that I think they are a legit means of falling in love, but it helped so much to have a list of questions to help us get to know one another… beyond the many, many questions already answered on OKCupid.
i also met my spouse on okcupid!!
Fellow Western grad🙋🏼♀️💙 We are also obnoxious liberals. (just with lower GPAs lol) A few years ago they almost changed the mascot from Vikings to ferns cause Vikings are too aggressive and don’t represent the diversity of the student body
I don’t know I got into two masters programs in London (LSE and UCL) in the 00s and they were NOT cheap. Way more expensive than the programs I got into at Columbia and Duke! Honestly can’t remember how much they were but someone told me international masters students were charged a fortune because that’s where they get all their revenue.
I think both are true. UK universities certainly do rely on international students paying more than home students. However, when I did my MA in 17/18 I had two US coursemates and 1 US flatmate who were all over here because it was cheaper than doing one at home.
this was so fun!!! Please do more fun episodes every once in a while. I know that's not what the podcast is for, and I accept that, but I was grinning ear to ear listening to this!
My university experience would have been so different if I had a "YOU KNOW MY FEELINGS ON FOUCAULT" t-shirt
cackling at "i love their boobs man" which ik seems like over the top straight performing shtick but its actually pretty close to how straight men talk
Every story mike tells is the epitome of “ tell me you are Autistic and ADHD without telling me you’re …” 😂 sorry I am also insufferable because I was part of the first group of kids to do Running Start in WA 🤪
As someone who did an exchange semester at RISD, so next door…your characterisation of Brown is Not Wrong lol
Seattle moms in minivans are without equal.
Oh wow, Aubrey is a fellow Brunonian! I'm just a bit older than her and I wonder if our time there overlapped. I might have even seen her play.
This was a delight! Love you guys. Also, Mike, I am currently sitting on an email I keep meaning to send, going on month #7, and yes it’s the embarrassment that I haven’t it that’s keeping me from sending it. 🫠
Truly this. A friend of a friend asked me to hang out a couple times at the start of this year and then I dropped the ball…back in March. 😵😭 someone pls tell me it’s not too late to follow up
This is the summer bonus we needed! "If you're not going to take this fake thing seriously..."
Dammit now I’m in love with both of you.
Y’all made me laugh so hard I cried while trying to drive. The bit about Mike running over Aubrey got dying of laughter. 😂
This episode was so fun, but also makes me want an episode on the origins of Myers-Briggs, which is bananas and, of course, because WHAT WASN'T pseudoscience-wise in the mid-20th century, Eugenics-adjacent, so far less silly than this.
Since I read The Personality Brokers I have recommended it to basically everyone I know because that story is truly *bonkers*.
Every recovering theatre major in this fan base is doing a victory lap knowing we can claim a fraction of Aubrey's overpriced education.
mike just immediately like “anal.” in his little gremlin mode voice got me
I feel terrible about this, because I know it’s inappropriate, boundaryless behavior, but I want him to finish answering the question! Why not!? Is it because he pees the most!?
The guilt of not replying to someone - I felt that!
I’m only halfway thru and have been literally lol-ing for most of it. Also, I too developed an intense anxiety about house fires around age 7, which led me to resist sleep. I thought I had to be vigilant the whole night. Had my parents known, I’m sure they wouldn’t have put me in therapy anyway. 😂
Yeah I am a safety first mom for sure but the firemen going to school and doing that talk ( that we were not warned about) absolutely fucked with my kids in ways I didn’t even realize at the time. Gave them so much anxiety about sleep gaaahhh
yay! you are back
I did these with someone who was *very* keen on me and into the idea. At question 4 “What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?” I was like I hate you get out of my bed *hiss* *hiss* *boo*. It ended my love affair with the Mandy Len Catron article. 🪦
Thank you for normalising not being ok/ hanging by a thread for the last 8-10 years, it’s so fucking accurate. Post Brexit and as a foreign person living in the U.K., I can testify that our lives have changed for the worse with no real hope of anything improving anytime soon.
I felt so seen - this is exactly how it feels right now
FYI: UK education a bit more expensive now, hahaha
Dammit I'm trying to listen while holding my sleeping baby and I'm laughing so hard at Michael offering to run Aubrey over I'm going to wake her up 😂 Y'all are cracking me up!
Who would I like to have dinner with? Aubrey and Mike!
Truly trying to imagine what my life would have been like if my parents’ response to my panic/anxiety disorder/autism had been to take me to therapy instead of behavioral interventions to make me stop acting like I was panicking/anxious/melting down 😂🫠🫢
“try telling that to a kid who thinks that, like, poop is a bad word…”, she says to her co-host, who consistently refers to poop as bamoos. 😂
Also a professors kid/dual enrollment student who went into therapy in second grade for similar fears! A wonderful bonus episode :-) just the lightheartedness that everyone craved
Thank you for this! I love you for doing the transphobia eps, I do, but as a trans person who is already surrounded by this stuff it can be A LOT. Really lovely just to hear you two chat about yourselves! Also hi from another anxious kid-of-a-professor working in a nonprofit 😆
Ok but realizing I vibe with y'all because I also have "professor's kid" syndrome 🤣
i would like a musical remake of this episode ala covid-era jonathan Groff podcast musicals
you guys have no. idea. how vindicating the foucault bashing is. thank you for your service 🫡🫡🫡
I may not love telling people that I'm a community college dropout, but it's so much harder for my buddy to "admit" he went Yale.
This brought me so much joy!
Love this!!! Would love another episode of this!
I needed this happy silly episode SO much, but please, I beg you, do not threaten us with semiotics and/or Foucault D: (<- deeply traumatized by an Umberto Eco course)
Thank you for sharing that your experience with Fire Safety was a seminal anxiety moment! 100% not alone with the "if I'm the only surviving member of my family should I go back into the burning house?..."
I love, love, loved the last few bonuses but I am also here for this. 💙 So good.
I went to Princeton and now work in an industry with few to no Ivy leaguers and fully get the weirdness about saying where you went. I usually say I went to a college in New Jersey. My friends call it dropping the P-bomb. (Also, when I used to date men before I realized that was a mistake, I had guys walk out on the date when they found out where I went to school. The straights are not okay.)
😂 I went to school in New York and if they press, it was in the town of Ithaca. Why are we like this???
Knowing that Aubrey is a big Simpsons fan, the first thing that popped into my head was Lisa saying “No! Not Brown, Brown, Brown…” 😂
While Aubrey’s answer about the dying thing is still a bummer, I genuinely thought she was gonna say “a doctor will refuse to treat me because I’m fat” 😢 similarly horrible
Omg I totally understand the Ivy league thing. I went to "the best social sciences and poli sci" school in France / Europe (allegedly) and people will be SO WEIRD ABOUT IT when I say it out loud (specially since I work in music now and have no job stability) - it's made me become weird about saying it! Like if you say it it automatically sounds like a brag but its just a fact? Also its not all that it's cut out to be? And I had a scholarship? Idk its too weird 😭
When I dropped out of grad school and became a waitress, one of the other waitresses felt the need to prove all the time that she was a better waitress than I was - I can only assume because of the educational disparity. It was so weird though, because like, she was???? She just definitely, 100% WAS a better waitress than I was? Like, girl, relax, I’m so bad at this!
Invisible Mike is so getting merked by a cybertruck. Superspeed 1000%
I was so like "Does everybody choose invisibility?" For me, it's flying or superspeed.
I really wanted to find out that Aubrey went to BYU.
Aubrey’s gaspy laugh is perhaps one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard.
I have a wild story about the 36 questions. I'm an organizational development consultant and I do a lot of DEI work. My local OD professional network hosted a training webinar about how to do DEI without shame. I was curious because I'm always trying to think about how to reduce shame since it's so paralyzing in this work. The session starts and we're to get into pairs and the "training" is to ask each other these questions, 5 at a time, and come back to the group and basically talk about how much closer we felt to our partner. I spotted the 36 question immediately and was so mad that someone thought this was what would solve racism. I spoke up in the session and said something like "I hope no one thinks this counts as actual DEI work, because it's not." The President of the association called me later and was basically like "I think it was fine and a good approach." Shocker, he's a white man in his 60s. So, yeah, Aubrey and Mike talking about how it creates temporary feelings of closeness was so spot on, because that's what this trainer thought would pass as anti-oppression work. Final note, the President was my partner and revealed some truly awful things to me about his past and even cried during our breakout times where I answered the questions fairly superficially. So the point they made about answering the questions in a one-sided way was literally my experience with them.
Really super ridiculously excited to know that Aubrey is a WoSo fan. I NEED a USWNT or NWSL episode now actually. Please explain woso to Michael. I need to hear you talk about Sophia Smith. I need to hear your takes on K*rbin Alb*rt. I need a maintenance phase/RE-cap crossover. I need a Maintenance Phase episode on how women have been ignored in sports health and how that's led to an insane number of injuries, especially ACL injuries, in the women's football world. Basically. This is the best news.
There's an ARTE documentary on this! Especially focusing on period health and when training has more or less possibility for injury! There are quite a few German universities researching periods, hormones, etc. It's with an eye to sports injury but has a lot of broader implications, of course. There are a few subtitle languages to choose from in the ARTE app. Iirc the spoken languages are German and French
“___ pees the most” is going to be my next got-to insult. Judging by how it has stuck with Mike, it’s really effective!
I’m a little worried it’s going to breach Patreon containment and reach Mike’s weird anti-fans. Though it would be very funny to see, like, Jesse Singal posting “Hobbes’s analysis is fundamentally unserious because blah blah. Also, he pees the most.”
I'm canceling Michael for saying "urban tribe"!!! wholesome episode otherwise
Seconding the “get your degree abroad.” Got my MLIS in the UK in one year and even with travel and cost of living it was less than in-state tuition for my in-state option. Plus it was over in a year! One of the best decisions I ever made.
I just finished my BA in the UK!! Absolutely recommend!
Yea! I'd love more episodes à la The Bachelor where you explain your non-work obsessions to each other.
I love all your episodes, but this was definitely a favorite for me.
OMG you guys I love this episode so much. Glad we can be gay and hang out para socially and not rage for an episode. I mean other than the general level of rage we feel due to neurodivergence and living in the world.
What a delightful episode 🥰
Wholesome podcast is wholesome :)
I went through some of these on a date with my now-husband! A few in, I was like, oh, this dude loves me. Don’t think it was the magic of the questions but it was a nice moment lol
Aubrey, I love you, AND I love Foucault, excited for the new bonus episode where you talk about the panopticon/madness and civilization for 45 mins and I'm not joking
Yes, I'd love an Aubrey Explains Foucault episode
I was googling "Where did Aubrey Gordon go to college," (which of course auto-completed because we all did) when she finally fessed up. 😂
"The reason people listen to us is the crackling sexual tension" 🤣🤣🤣 full belly laugh omg
Ooo maybe YouTube dramas!!! Fully Raw Kristina!!
Kids are literally the most brutal. I was talking to my four year old niece about Clifford the Big Red Dog and she goes "he's soooo big" and I said "yeah, he's bigger than a house" and she goes "HE'S EVEN BIGGER THAN YOUR GLASSES" 💀
"You know how I feel about Foucault!!!"
The way Aubrey's reaction to Michael's reaction to HIS OWN joke healed me.
That was the first tag line that made me laugh out loud, alone, in me car, like a maniac. More Bonnie Raitt deep cuts.
YES
I love you guys so much, and I agree that this entire year has just been exhausting and awful in so many ways. It was really nice to hear you guys talk about some lighthearted stuff! And also to acknowledge that we are all feeling this way, like...it's rough out here. I appreciate you both so much
Yep, same. I'm finally acknowledging the number that the last ~decade has done on me. I've been so fortunate in so many ways, so I haven't wanted to complain.
You guys were not wrong that this deepened the parasocial relationship. I was dying during the “run Aubrey over with a cyber truck” bit. Sounds like convos I have with my friend. This was an absolutely lovely episode.
This was lovely. I absolutely relate to the discussion over anxiety and how it causes relational difficulties. After a long struggle with infertility and going through IVF I had a baby in 2020. And OH BOY my anxiety was terrible. It honestly took having another kid in a less stressful time to realize. We are still rebuilding after that and it just felt good to hear someone else in different circumstances say they felt it, too.
I know Aubrey made it sad at the end but it's something that I've been feeling for awhile. I'm exhausted, everyone I know (who is paying attention) is exhausted, and I don't know how to get us the rest we need. What helps keep me going is things like you guys, If Books Could Kill, You Are Good, and the several comedians I follow. So thank you for helping me keep a hold of my sanity for another day. 🩵
random recommendation, but if you read, check out tk kingfisher. i recently really loved the series that starts with “paladin’s grace”. super light yet captivating enough to drown out all the terrible goings on
As someone who works at Brown, I’m mad I didn’t know this! We should be bragging.
Aubrey I love your laugh! It reminds me of my mother and her Muttley laugh. She died 6 years ago and it's so wonderful to hear it!
Did anyone else have to pause the episode and laugh until they cried when Mike said "Did you realise you ran over a miniature gentlemen?". Nearly killed me, much like the truck nearly killed him!
I used to team up my students in my English as a second language class and make them ask each other these questions as an icebreaker activity. I taught adults and high school students. Only 2 of them ever ended up dating, a girl and a guy which then made the guy realize hes gay .
OMG I love the suggestions for a raw milk episode and a blue zones episode!!!
Hearing you both belly laugh made me really happy xx
Yay omg this made my day soo much better💖
Aubree's laugh at 9:30 is fucking killing me 😭 I needed that today
Just a topic suggestion - "Blue Zones, The: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest" by Dan Buettner. An initially innocent observation of the longevity of certain worldwide populations leads to methodology mistakes galore, a scammy book(s) on how to live longer, a Netflix propaganda series, and a cult town in Minnesota. This is ripe for Maintenance Phase.
That could also be a good one for If Books Could Kill
I want so badly to hear the unedited versions of all of your shows (except what you would remove for personal or private reasons). I could listen to you both ALL DAY. ❤️
Oh yay! I've been relistening to old episodes (again lol) and was thinking it feels like time to bust out another one of Aubrey's diet books or something as a reprieve for you both 🥰
I too have been revisiting the back catalog because it's bizarrely calming!
also can we do a whole episode about your favorite recipes? a maintenance phase cookbook because the katharine hepburn brownie recipe has changed my life now too
seconding a maintenance phase cookbook!!!
I did running start! BCC 2002 ✨🤸
Woohoo! A new bonus🥳 I keep forgetting to write some episode suggestions so doing it now before I forget: I would love to see you guys talk about raw dairy things and especially the whole raw dairy, purity in foods to right wing pipeline. And another one, the whole Zoe thing and gut health or "diets designed for your body". I'm not sure if Zoe is just a thing in the UK or if it's in the US too but I find it fascinating. Anyway, thank you as always for all the thoughtful commentary and for moments of fun too 😁
I second all of this, including a “pure foods” (specifically) to “right wing” (generally) episode, but if you’re interested in that genre, you may enjoy their “wellness” (generally) to “qanon” (specifically) episode from a while back, if you haven’t already heard it. (And even if you have, probably!)
Karening for good!!! I love that!
Justice for the Kind Karens™️
I used to tell people I went to grad school in Rhode Island but now I’m going to say I went to Brown like Aubrey 🤭
Thank you for this birthday present!
Happy birthday 🥳🥳
I'm obsessed with the podcast musical about these questions.
I prefer rage. J/k I would listen to the two of you read a phone book.
Lol same!
Oh can't wait to listen to this. I'm so happy you two chose something a little lighter to cover. I was beginning to get worried for y'all after the last few episodes. They filled me with so much anger and sadness - and I only had to listen to them!! 😫
OK, now I've listened to the whole thing and this was the best 49 minutes in my life for at LEAST the last 8 years. Y'all were on FIRE!! So good. 🤣🤣🤣
