May Bonus: The Case Against Queer Marriage (And Trans Rights)
Do the arguments about trans rights sound familiar to you? They did to us, too. This month, we're talking through the stark parallels between the arguments against queer marriage and the arguments against trans health care.
You can play the episode directly through Patreon or use our RSS feed to add it to your podcast app. Here are the instructions from Patreon. As ever, leave a comment if you've got a request for future Patreon bonus episodes.

Paleontologist here-- not that you need that quote debunked but the 1.2 billion year history of sexual dimorphism and the differing selection pressures on female vs male organisms is wrong and shows a complete lack of interest in reality
Bisexual Mystery Parade
Yikes, listening to this in 11/2025 and hearing French's description of the Conservative Christian post gay marriage world, i have to say i very much misunderstood how much an "accusation is a revelation" Conservative thought was. I honestly have no idea how to communicate with people who think that the only two outcomes are like, oppress or be opressed.
“Too many gay people raising Dolly the sheep” 😩😩😩
Rerelease on the main feeeed!! The people need this . . . if it doesn’t have paywall secrets that need to be edited out - didn’t listen for that but that’s your personal choice of course!
Like so needed nowwww 😭
I always call Ke$ha ka-chinga!
Imagine how much better the world would be today if gay people had in fact created mini vans full of gay cloned children in the 00s though 😩
Wondering how mikes Grandma voted in 2024 🤣
the adopted children metaphor i believe came from Natalie Wynn!
listened to this the day Anita Bryant died. no better way to celebrate. suck oranges in hell, Anita...🍊🔥
"That is an argument by someone who has never been through any immigration process." Yup. Especially the US process any time in the last 100 years!
What…how would gay marriage lower the birth rate? Do they think that if gay people can’t get married they’ll all be out here marrying opposite sex partners and having babies? I can’t with this.
No, they think that once straight people see how much fun it is they’ll all turn gay. IF ONLY.
Next time you release a bonus episode from the vault, can it be this one? I think about it all the time and I think it'd be so effective to share with people who "love gay people" but "don't get the trans stuff"
I work with infants. “Human milk” is absolutely happening. We have a handout from the CDC hanging on our fridge entitled “Human Milk Storage”
That’s not new though? It was called “human milk” in some contexts back when I was nursing my daughter, who is now in her early 20s. Just like sometimes we say “milk” and sometimes we specify “cow’s milk”.
So late on this episode but I remember a woman I worked with before gay marriage where a lesbian couple and gay couple married each other's non American spouse to allow them to be in the same country together. People find a way to be together and blocking them from marriage or care just hurts people not stops the activity. But that would be their point. Thank you for this podcast. These were stupid justifications then and now.
Anyone else having trouble with how the last two main feed eps and now the bonus are all about hatred against LGBT people? It’s a major issue but I have skipped all of them because I don’t want to spend my free time hearing about how I’m hated… they can and should make the episodes they want to make but I’m hoping for a return to content about health & wellness misinformation.
To me these episodes feel very much in concert with the usual debunking of health misinformation and fat phobic rhetoric, given that the queer community as a whole has and continues to suffer from lack of care and understanding from the medical system. The abhorrent disdain for fatness and queerness that comes from closed minded people permeates healthcare access, delivery, and research!
Aubrey - if you're in the mood to troll Michael do an episode about fecal transplants, they tried to study if they could help with weight loss. Can tie into the obsession with gut health.
Please could you guys do an episode on anti inflammatory diets! People keep promising that it would solve everything from my chronic knee pain to my crippling depression and it would be lovely if it was actually true for a change 😂
idea: the truth of high cortisol levels and the diet trend related to it!
I listened to this episode while literally packing up my house because I’m moving my family from TN to MN to escape the awful anti-LGBT legislation here. As the parent of a trans kid, it’s REALLY NOT THAT HARD to be supportive and affirming. I spent this past legislative session meeting with a bunch of Republican legislators in TN trying to convince them of mine & my kid’s humanity, and they absolutely had all the talking points outlined in this episode. We presented soooo much data (even charts & shit that didn’t require reading comprehension!) and they could not be convinced of any narrative than this ROGD bullshit. They flew in de-trans activist Chloe Cole to speak on the dangers of GAC but won’t listen to actual Tennesseans whose care they’re banning. It’s maddening. So, we’re taking our trans kid (and their sibling too lol) and getting the fuck out before things get any worse.
Minnesota welcomes you! Sorry about the weather.
As a trans person who considered the name J. Mikol Bailey (but ultimately went with Mikol J. Bailey), this most recent main feed episode is taking me on a journey.
If you both weren't already so busy with all the things, "Two Old Gays Grousing" would be an amazing spin off podcast. Maybe a series in the bonus episodes?
Three years ago there was a ridiculous beat up about chest feeding in Australia. An LGBT group contracted the Australian Breastfeeding Association to develop materials specifically for LGBT communities. There was nonsense about "erasure" of breastfeeding. Of course, anyone paying attention noticed that it was a specific set of materials produced under a contract and the association continued to be the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Apparently, trans people being catered to, and the Breastfeeding Association being paid to do it, is erasing cis women https://www.smh.com.au/national/breastfeeding-association-defends-creation-of-chestfeeding-booklet-20210512-p57rbu.html

I've often been so confused by people having issues with the word "parent" being used over "mother" or "person" instead of "woman", because yes I'm a woman mother, but that doesn't STOP me being a parent or a person!!
I've just seen that Michael Mosley, British purveyor of weight loss advice on the BBC has died (he got lost on an island he was holidaying on). I have complicated feelings, as his advice was often repeated to me by family members but of course his death in these circumstances is tragic. Hope it's ok to post here, wasn't sure where else to put it, I don't want to detract from the topic of the episode because the current hostility towards trans people is terrible.
Terrible news for his family
I really appreciate you both ❤️
I remember when that cowboy brought his horse to make a point and tried to marry his horse. But the clerk was too smart, the horse was only five so it was too young to get married. I think that was in Georgia.
You can’t just use the word “blast” when talking about Rick Santorum. Nor can you not finish that story!!!
As a perinatal mental health therapist, "chest feeding" has been encouraged as the default term and "human milk" has been a term that gets emphasized in chest feeding enthusiasts usually to distinguish from cow's milk as there are actually sub pops that are opposed to cow's milk. I don't particularly care one way or the other but I just had a "well, actually ..." moment when Michael said nobody really says those things 😝
"If you let people have their own individual experience of life, how will we understand statistics?"
If there is anyway you all would put this on the main feed, I would love to share it with some folks! There is so much wisdom in this ep!
Rick Santorum - "Blast from the past" more like "Blast from the ass" lol
I live for the narration voice Aubrey used when she read excerpts from The Master Cleanse. These readings come close 😂
I would love to hear y'all talk about emotions or psychological experiences being "stored" in different parts of the body. If I hear one more person tell me "trauma is stored in the hips", I will hip thrust out of existence. I know that our psychological/emotional experiences have a direct connection with our bodily experiences, but my God, pls make it stop
🤣’hip thrust out of existence’ is so good. I’m a massage therapist and my clients who have experienced sexual trauma or torture do have tight muscles that move the hips. Curling into oneself is a natural response to fear. When our stress is triggered we have a hormonal reaction, which can make our muscles tighten up. Changing a stress response can only be done by processing the origin of the trauma. Interesting stuff! Blanket statements like “trauma is stored in the hips” do not impart the nuance of what MIGHT be going on.
I really appreciate you both! I’ve been trying to change my parent’s opinions on language and grammar by telling them how language changes along with how it’s more important for trans/NB people to be respected and supported.
thank you both for being here and sharing yourselves and your work online i love you until forever
i’ve wanted to write michael an email for a while just like telling him how much i love him and ive beeen listening since 2018 YWA you are the funniest little man in my head and everything you do is chefs kiss also i loved ur video game jokes recently
i just love you both so very much and that’s all i have to say
Holy shit, I cannot imagine how shitty it must have felt to be that random person who tweeted "Please no, Adele can't be a TERF" on their personal account, and seeing it being used as a basis for transphobic articles. This was most probably a trans person writing to their trans followers, and it was used by some fucking ghouls as a proof that we're all deranged. I feel so sorry for them :(
Dang *shaking my cane at a cloud* now I think I understand how the second-wave feminists of my youth must have felt about my ignorance of how new it was that I could get a credit card in my own name or (this didn’t age well) an abortion.
Not great to hear white people shit on RuPaul if I’m being honest
Let's get past it and think about the politics of identity- or how respectability politics dressed as blackness and wealth mean that folks like RuPaul can (temporarily) get away willing to sell out black queer and trans people who are nonconforming (and destroy the environment with fracking on his bumblefuck ranch) to selfishly further his own wealth and brand.
New merch: Bi-sexual Mystery Parade t-shirts
Came here to say this!
Does anyone know what movie podcast Aubrey is talking about?
Omg took me a day to realize Michael was talking about Ke$ha at the beginning 😂
Hilary Clinton is a literal war criminal, so please dunk on her all you want. She supports killing Palestinian children in their tents.
For the youths... Obama, as I recall, was fine with gay marriage & maybe other gay rights as a state senator, then "had to pray about it" for a long ass time as the president, and then Vice President Diamond Joe Biden seemed to accidentally blurt out support for gay marriage on a TV interview & the administration seemed forced to back him up. Was this all contrived? Is Joe the drunken master of gay rights? Did he not fully know where he was over a decade ago? We may never know.
Absolutely love this take Kevin
The 'I'm not a transphobe... But...' stuff... Also screams of 'I'm not fatphobic, but I'm concerned about their health'
Same logic for sure. Like racism without racists.
Just watched "Your Fat Friend". Thank you, Aubrey, Pam, and Rusty for your honesty and vulnerability.
David French, I don't think "Orthodox Christianity " means what you think it means
Thank you for this! Do you have any recommendations of people / articles / resources diving into more detail about what Aubrey shared at the end? (Productive convos with people who are anti-trans or repeating anti-trans talking points?) I live and work in Colorado Springs, CO and lead a team standing up resource center for survivors of the Club Q shooting, as well as working with local public officials, doctors, and therapists on increasing access to affirming care. We’re in the heart of white evangelical nationalism territory, and a lot of our public discourse is influenced by it. Most of what I’ve been researching is geared towards larger, more progressive cities and conversations with family / loved ones. Whew, anyway! Thank you for what y’all do whether you have time to respond or not. You’re the highlight of my month ❤️
Shon Faye's book "The Transgender Issue" is pretty helpful (or look up clips and interviews online). The book is primarily written for cis-people who want to learn more about trans people and she does a solid job of debunking myths and highlighting solidarities with cis people. You're doing really emotionally intense work, and I hope you're being kind to yourself as you do it. Solidarity
Imagine being the kid who gets pulled into the hallway when the teacher starts reading a gay book
Nothing gonna make you want to read the gay book more than having to sit in the hall while all your friends get to hear the gay book
I am poison oak hear me roar
Be poison oak, do crimes
Great episode! On a side note,it struck me that these arguments go back even further, at least in the British empire and former British colonies. For instance, you can find very similar arguments around the fight for women’s suffrage if you look at historical newspaper archives.
Unrelated to the current ep but can I please put in a request for an episode on Andrew Huberman? He’s a hugely popular wellness grifter/podcaster who is technically a neurobiologist/ophthalmologist who decided he was an expert on immunology and other medical things, which he is decidedly not. Also recently it came out that he’s this massively narcissistic Casanova who had like 6 girlfriends at the same time and made each of them believe they were the only one he was seeing. Which is not relevant to his wellness grifting but amazingly entertaining all the same…
Sounds relevant. Cheating, grifting, pathologically lying… Is he from the US?
Trans listener! I get SO excited when you guys talk about trans stuff. It's an outlet where I can let out breath and just laugh through the BS that frustrates me to no end on a day to day basis and outright affects my life. Thank you and much love!!!
“Two old gays a-grousing” is totally making my queer carol rewrites this year. 🏳️🌈 🎶
The "pregnant person" thing confuses me so much. I have said "pregnant person" or "gestating human" FOREVER. I don't even know why, I just like the turn of phrase? I said "pregnant person" in front of my FIL at some point last year and he went all blah blah woke blah blah on me. I just said "Do you...not think women are people?" We're all people first, right? Fucking hell.
Right! Like as a cis woman, I also prefer a lot of this language. It’s nice!
I made the mistake of reading the comments on Michael's thread about the study findings. I already had little faith left in humanity, but that comment section crushed the scraps I had left. If you value your sanity then don't read through that post.
It’s totally OK to ask for a (natal-born) female doctor/nurse when getting a pap or a rape kit! If this means you have to be a bigot, then be a bigot.
Sorry, what? This is so strange. If I wanted a femme presenting person it shouldn’t matter what genitals they’re born with I WONT BE SEEING THEM WHY WOULD I CARE?! (Survivor myself and this is absolutely absurd. Never be a bigot)
at 39:30 the whole “homosexualists” designation is sO interesting because that was used by the military in the early days of defining and medicalizing homosexuality! Because the army didn’t want gay people but it was WW2 so like they needed men and discharging/ jailing all of them was not going to work they came up with a tier system akin to the “homosexualist/homosexual” differentiation you talk about! Mainly the designations of “ habitual homosexual”(who could be ‘rehabilitated’ vs “true sodomist” “confirmed pervert”. (yes these are the actual terms!)
confirmed pervert would be an excellent t-shirt. i think true sodomist would probably be a band name.
Intersex person here 🙋 Trying to fit sex into male and female, or any two categories, literally erases me and people like me. It’s the reason I cannot legally use a public bathroom in several states, including Kansas and my home state of Utah. The trans and intersex communities have a lot of overlap and shared needs, and it’s super important to realize that the legal challenges to trans life are also legal challenges to intersex life. There’s so many ways in which this manifests, but one way is that non-consensual sex surgeries on intersex infants are explicitly permitted and encouraged in laws that ban other consensual, gender affirming care and surgeries for transgender minors.
Please stop covering trans issues. Neither of you are trans, it doesn't affect you, and it's clear by now that the research on Maintenance Phase is so poor, so manipulated, and so biased that you can only do damage to our community by association. I have no other way of reaching out to you and my Patreon membership will expire soon, so this is my last desperate plea - I am trans, I was a fan, I believe your hearts are in the right place, but I don't trust the evidence behind any research Michael Hobbes presents anymore. And by the way: I have verified the identity and credentials of the author of the Spurious Substack. I know they have tried to speak with you guys and you have not responded. It looks so, so bad, and I am terrified for what the inevitable backlash against Michael Hobbes is going to do to the fight for trans rights since you and Jesse Singal have taken it upon yourselves as cis non-scientists to have a public pissing contest about it and it's a huge part of your online presence. Please, please, for the sake of trans lives, just stop inserting yourself.
Lol
By the way. Kind of unrelated but the phrase 'alphabet people' is so funny. To me, it always gives 'medieval peasant scoffing at people who can read'.
Jackie O to fuckboy pipeline!!! I am crying
I fucking LOVE the focus from you two on trans issues at the moment. Please keep it up. I'm non binary, and very angry and vocal and opinionated on this stuff. It can feel super frustrating and demoralising when ultimately you realise you don't have a platform and nobody cares. I often feel like the trans community is so under attack and, a big DIFFERENCE compared to the gay stuff is that now fake news is so much easier to create and spread and digest. This only adds to that feeling of being absolutely crushed by the weight of it. I'd say sometimes but honestly I feel like that a lot of the time. This is a balm. Thanks for doing this. Much love to you both ❤️🏳️⚧️
The fake messages from the trans community reminds me when those white ppl tried to say blk ppl vandalized their house and wrote “ blacks rule” lol
Went on a hunt for the podcast that you mentioned on se7en— how dare you not say which it was 😜—and I think I’ve found it: werewolf ambulance?
Kennedy, your profile pic is 🤣🔥 I’m like, but god is everywhere, especially in my pussy!
As a Rufus Wainwright superfan, this made me so happy. Also, the way Mike says "youths!" 🤣
Hello fellow superfan!!! 👋
thank you for being online queer elders for young queer people like me 🥰🥰
I love you all so much, so much. Thanks for bringing up the issues of how we talk about birthing folks. You mentioned that no one is arguing for changes in terminology. I actually serve as Executive Director of a statewide breastfeeding coalition - Michigan Breastfeeding Network. As a gender equity and justice organization, we actually discuss frequently how to be gender inclusive in our terminology. At the end of the day, we are all suffering under misogyny, capitalism, and white supremacy. I know you know this, but I have to say it from my own platform all the time: The wider the human milk-supportive tent we can establish, the better. Including all birthing folks, pregnant folks, and human milk feeding folks in our work is the goal. We are 100% in favor of, and advocate loudly for, disruption of every oppressive system - including terminology - that puts breastfeeding out of reach for families who want to. I know it can pacify reactionaries to say “no one is doing this”. But, our organization has officially decided that doesn’t fucking matter. Gay parents, trans parents, and marginalized families more generally matter so much more than pacifying reactionaries. So, please advocate for these changes in terminology loudly. Human milk feeding, body feeding, chest feeding, birthing folx, pregnant people, partner, the non-human milk feeding parent… shout it all as loudly as you can. As a straight, cis-gender, all the privileges woman, I can promise you that no one is harmed. Human milk saves lives, and we are here to make sure everyone feels safe in our part of the birth justice movement. Ok, stepping down from my soapbox :) Keep on being amazing. Thanks for all you do.
Sorry for my ignorance (and Google searching did not clarify at all) but what is "the Academy"? It is mentioned 2-3 times in this episode. Thanks!
My understanding is that they are referring to academia at large/ the institution of research in general.
On relisten is so funny that the example is Ke$ha and Le$bean is just left on the table lol
I don't think Mike and Aubrey are on tiktok enough to know the "le dollar sign bean" meme
What’s with the ‘Two old gays’ ? You two are merely babes in arms compared with some of us!
loved the part where you touched on the research statistics, the language stuff with the adopted kids comparison and the “parent or guardian” type paperwork changes. Also appreciated the nuance with the Adele moment. I’m definitely not afraid to use new words, but there is something I really like about being proud to be a woman (or a man, or nonbinary) and also being able to love and support everyone included in whatever statistical subgroup you’re proud to be a part of♥️ Getting hung up on what the subgroups “mean” and who is allowed to be included is a distraction that leaves everyone’s rights hanging in the balance while we fight about semantics
I'm confused by your point at the start that some listeners are too young to remember the debate around gay marriage, since it was legalised in the US in 2015, do you have listeners under 10 years old??? 😂
I am one of those listeners. The fight for gay marriage was won in 2015 but had been an issue well before that. The right to have some of the legal protections of marriage was achieved in some states through civil unions in the late 90s and 2000s. And the first same sex marriage in Massachusetts (first state to legalize) just had its 20 year anniversary this May. People fought long and hard before and after these dates to achieve the marriage equality we now have and I, being 18 (born 2005), was witness to very little of it. When I was born gay marriage was legal in one state and before I graduated elementary school it was federally legal, so I missed most of the debate. I vaguely remember the 2015 Obergefell decision and the cultural reaction to it, but as a 10 year old that had not yet recognized my queerness I just watched other people debate my rights with confusion, silent rage, and more confusion as to why I was enraged. Learning about the fight for gay marriage and other legal and social right during my tween and teen years (late 2010s) was actually how I began to accept my queerness and foster my love of history and politics with a focus on legal and social justice
Totally agree about hateful people not seeing themselves as the bad guys. Growing up, most of my extended family would say white supremacist talking points and make jokes and say that Obama was literally a sign of the Apocalypse. And if the idea of them being called racist came up, they would be genuinely hurt and confused.
When I hear people make the argument that queer people are unnatural, I want to refute the naturalistic fallacy by saying something like, well you know what’s totally natural? CHOLERA! MOSQUITO-BORNE ILLNESSES! HIGH INFANT MORTALITY RATES! Categorizing things as “natural” and “unnatural” is just something we made up! And then I get a sinking feeling as I remember people are drinking “raw water” and realize for some people this argument might have the exact opposite effect…
On the other end, wearing glasses, cancer treatments, and automobiles (to name a few) are also “unnatural” but you don’t see many people decrying things like that…
I cent remember who said it, but the idea of reflecting on the fact that you weren't as informed as you are now really hit with me. I was a freshman in high school in 2001-2002 and still used gay as a stand in for lame. That was until I said it in front of my gay coworker, who I did not know was gay. He asked me why I used that term that way and I didn't have an answer. He asked me if I thought he was lame and that's when it hit me "how could I use this term to degrade someone I considered a friend?" After that I just couldn't understand not standing up for someone who could just as easily be my friend. (If it's not obvious I was raised with very conservative parents) sorry that was long, but I'll never forget that moment. Edit: Aubrey's joke of be the bigger person both figuratively and literally was just chefs kiss perfect timing.
Plug the horror movie podcast please 💜
❤️ Thanks for this, you two. The bit about the changing definition of womanhood/girlhood made me think of my son in first or second grade coming home and saying they had been given a crossword at school and one of the clues was “the opposite of boys.” He and his friends were bewildered. He said, “My first thought was… tigers? But it didn’t fit.”
What is UP with The Economist and this bull$h*t?? Bro fr I remember being like 13 or 14 and reading what I now know to have been a BLATANTLY anti trans article on The Economist (yes I tried reading The Economist at 13yo - I was trying to become smart lmao dont judge me). It was like " if trans women are allowed in women's WCs then cis men will pretend to be trans women to rape women in bathrooms". And I remember being like scared like "omg I hadn't thought about this should I be worried??" And also low key convinced they had a legit point... when the point was : WE BELIEVE CIS MEN TO BE THIS TERRIBLE SO LET'S BAN TRANS WOMEN - like genuinely CIS MEN ARE THE PB, lets do ANYTHING BUT change them. Also they gave the example of one trans women in the UK who apparently attacked another lady - I don't remember the context at all. Anyways, cherry picking as usual. But really, what is up with The Economist?? Like they actually instilled transphobia in my teenage brain in less than 30 lines... to this day I think that's so scarry to think about. (Luckly I've never really stumbled upon these kind of articles on The New York Times, guess that's my bliss).
I never pass up an opportunity to plug hysterectomy as opposed to tubal ligation. I am a cis gendered woman without a uterus and I couldn't be happier!
17:40 ... In what way would a clone being raised by its gene donor NOT a kid being raised by its biological parents??? Oh that's...that's some argument.
You two are magic How can I have listened to nigh on an hour of all the stupid anti-gay/anti-trans material and yet NOT want to set things on fire?
I used to run a Facebook group called STFU Rick Santorum. This had me cackling at work ☺️
I need that Anita Bryant shirt.
Can we go back to health and wellness stuff (respectfully)
Ella, respectfully, this podcast has always been about the way people lean into untrue, problematic or downright hateful arguments to justiy their desire to value their comfort over other people's rights. And the fact is, Aubrey and Mike get to do whatever they want with the podcast they create. You have the right to stop supporting them and stop listening to them, but honestly there's nothing respectful about telling artists "I don't like your new direction, do more of what I want."
1. I don’t understand why the main reason (at least in my super-important opinion) behind a lot of anti-trans views is so often skipped over: fear that someone will be “tricked” into liking/loving a trans person. I think cis-men especially have a fear that they will be attracted to a trans woman. (Not saying this is a good excuse, I just rarely hear anyone acknowledge it even though it is definitely the reason behind a lot of violence against trans women and the set up for decades of movie misunderstandings.) 2. Pearl necklaces are the new puka shells, and I am NOT here for it.
I don't quite understand either, my working theory is internationalized transphobia on a societal level and in the strongest cases internationalized transphobia on an individual level
I have just recently had a baby (I was the birthing parent) and although there are some people, especially on spcial media, using terms like pregnant person, birthing people, chestfeeding etc the vast vast majority of NHS Published literature (that I received) and staff still all reference mother, mum etc. I don't think that changing to pregnant person is any different than not calling parent & toddler groups mum & toddler groups... As a cis person it doesn't adversely affect me in any way.
“Be the bigger person, literally and figuratively.” I’m going to use that!
I just want to say thanks. I missed last month's because my dad died (😭) and it lifted my spirits to log in and see two episodes! Indulging in my parasocial BFF-ship (😂) with Aubrey and Mike is a balm for the soul.
I’m so sorry for your loss 💔
Great episode! I was born in the first half of the 1990’s and was a kid in the oughts (to top it off I was also a christian homeschool kid so extremely unaware and sheltered from stuff like this…yes, I have been in therapy for a long time🥲). I’ve heard people make the comparison of trans rights vs gay rights, but not trans rights vs gay marriage and it was honestly very enlightening. As a trans non-binary person I am just so fucking tired. That’s really all. I’m stuck in a southern bible belt red state due to my career, and tired of hiding. But I don’t have a lot of options. I hope things get better soon…we just want to live in peace like everyone else. The attacks on bodily autonomy have hurt so many, trans people are just the front lines. Rolling back Roe v. Wade was second. I dread whatever comes next… it will eventually hurt everyone except white cis-hetero men. 🫠
“The guy who got borked” lol.
As a lactation consultant in Washington DC who teaches regular public classes to expectant parents, I absolutely use the words: breastmilk, human milk, breastfeeding, bodyfeeding, chestfeeding, nursing, lactation, lactating, lactating parent, breastfeeding parent, birthing parent, non-breastfeeding parent, partner, and caregiver when talking about situations people expecting babies might experience. When working one-on-one with people, I mirror their language choices, but for groups, I use all the words (not all at once). It's my job to communicate with and support people with diverse life experiences. Using inclusive language is a pretty low bar.
Echoing your sentiments, I’ve been certified as a birth doula and am currently in school pursuing a degree in midwifery. In both my doula training and my schooling, the terms used most often have been gender neutral (birthing / lactating parent, human / chest milk, body / chest feeding, etc). Yes of course we mirror our language to that of the individual, but these are not obscure terms (as Hobbes implies)! These are terms that, while themselves are in their infancy, are used to train future birth attendants and providers — as they should be.
Omg I love when Aubrey’s bachelor nation fandom pops out. I TOO THINK BRAYDEN IS THE WORST. Dream catcher earrings????
I checked the comments just to find this 🌹
The one accusation I believe about trans people is that there are annoying trans people online. I'm sure it's true but it's a real 'let ye without sin cast the first stone' situation
Now that I think about, with all the bigots making parody accounts it's hard to find actual annoying trans people online. Now trans phobes make up their own trans scolds to get mad at
So glad you both covered this. A cathartic, if infuriating, listen!
I use the term human milk! Because "human milk for human babies" has been a phrase in breastfeeding advocacy for some time. 🙂
1) My grandmother (who, coincidentally given the joke later in the episode, I call Grammy) sounds a lot like Mike's. She voted for Trump in 2016 because she couldn't bring herself to vote for Hillary, but didn't in 2020 because she was all *surprised Pikachu* about how he handled COVID. 2) As a scientist who does cohort studies, you definitely want as much demographic information as you can get! It won't fuck up the data, necessarily, it just needs to be accounted for. I'm a total menace thanks to working closely with bioinformaticians and I'll shout to whoever will listen about data completeness!
i feel like the whole adele point can be summed up by me, notorious trans leftist scold, being completely bewildered at the suggestion that trans people hate adele
I want bisexual group marriage plzzzzz 🩷💜💙
I literally said out loud "I don't wanna get married unless it's bisexual group marriage!" 🤣
I stand by my right to enjoy Pregnant Women are Smug by the great Garfunkel and Oats.
So I remember during this debate spending a fair amount of time being against gay marriage, not because I was against gay people getting married, but because I wanted to abolish the civil institution of marriage altogether (no matter what your plumbing) and have everyone enter civil partnerships where they could better define the terms. My feeling was (and I'm kind of still like this), that it would make more sense to allow folks to have a menu of terms for how long they wanted to get legally married/partnered up, (start with a five-year agreement, then reassess, for example, if that's what you choose) and to have clear stipulations on the division of assets, basically allowing everyone to enter into the situation with a prenup without judgement on it. Also, I'd wanted to have the name changed to civil partnership so this wasn't mixed up with various religious institutions of marriage, which are a different thing. My opinion specifically on gay marriage rights shifted largely because I had a conversation with a lesbian friend who was basically like, "I understand your general arguments against marriage, but LGBTQ people should have the same opportunities to enter into marriages, i.e. make the same bad decisions as straight people, otherwise things aren't equal." And I was like, that makes sense, so I changed my opinion. Just throwing this out here because seeing the topic of your podcast made me laugh and remember early aughts me :) I still think at the least religious and civil marriage should be separated and the civil institution called something else. Shocking no one, I've never been married and I don't expect to be. But some of my friends, gay and straight, have done quite well with their marriages, so it's not a bad call for everyone. See, growth! :D
I’m in the UK, and have watched the flip switch over the last 20 years: from a broadly trans-accepting culture (or moving in that direction) to one where the official and centre-left position seems to be one of discomfort with the idea of trans peoples’ existence. Absolutely this has been driven by some hardcore bigots who are motivated by disgust, but I think it’s worth noting what seems to be driving otherwise quite progressive people towards TERF-ish arguments. Essentially, I think, TERFs in the UK have been successful at making the case that women’s protection and liberation is best served by a tight and exclusionary definition of what women are. I feel like our best bet at winning some people back is to keep making the case that an open and fluid definition of women will actually better serve those aims. It’s a tough pill to swallow that they won’t just accept the humanity of trans people at face value - but it’s because they are (in some cases) motivated by real concerns about other vulnerable groups of women. So that’s what I try to work with when trying to bring people round.
And by “real concerns” I don’t mean “concerns that are founded in reality” I mean “concerns that are genuinely felt by those people”
I love that so many of us need bisexual mystery parade shirts
I want that so much!
Why is Michael so hesitant to dunk on Hillary Clinton? I get there was a lot of meaningless dunking from the right in 2016 with emails etc. but Hillary is incredibly dunk worthy for /very/ legitimate reasons.
He and Peter get into this over on If Books Could Kill - they did a "Hillary's emails" episode which I think is Patreon-only.
Intersex people. Amazing rebuttal to all the biological bs. Also, biology is socially constructed - see: scientific racism. Love old gays grousing. Here for it. Love y'all.
Okay, I need two old gays grousing merch asap. And the two should be in scare quotes, because 🤷
Nearly spit out my coffee when Audrey said “radical queers LOVE RuPaul” 😭
Fun fact: Dolly Parton herself often says "Appa-laysha"
The anti trans quote with the clownfish.....lol clownfish swap genders!
I’m only fifteen minutes in, so this is not a comment on the entire episode, but: PLEASE add a Bisexual Mystery Parade shirt to the TeePublic store! 😆
I came here to say this!! I have a mighty need
I was a La Leche League Leader for 10 years and still know many people active in the breast or chest feeding world. Many people in the community *are* using the terms chest feeding and human milk. It may not be mainstream in the general public, but for the people immersed in this community, it is not unusual.
YES! I tend not to use chest feeding because I opt for "nursing" or "pumping" for whatever reason. But I use "human milk" instead of "breast milk" almost exclusively. My kids have long been weaned and still call milk "cow milk." 😂
Mike is still on his horse f*cking jag with that opener
Michael Hobbes cancels own self-cancellation. The hero we deserve.
Rick Santorum blocked me on Twitter for calling him Mr Man on Dog 😂
That's awesome! If i were you, I'd get a "blocked by Santorum" plaque. Gotta celebrate your victories
You don't need to qualify any criticism of Hillary with "this is not to shit on her" her track record does that for her. Stating facts that leave you with a negative impression of someone can just be that. Maybe she's not as righteous as you think...
I appreciate the qualification!

Love this episode I teach an into to Black queer studies class to undergrads and yes, they are so young that history sections include same-sex marriage and a lot more context for the 1990s than I'd ever thought I do. I like this approach of drawing parallels between the "debate" across eras. Thank you!
Pro bisexual group marriages
Also like not that this is what we are talking about here but would it. Be so bad. If we let more than two people be married. Like oh no the slippery slope to . . . legally recognising polyamorous relationships. Like c’mon.
Where can I buy the beret-ed RuPaul t-shirt!?
Bisexual Mystery Parade!!!!
I prefer “gifted ducker”
Can we have some "Bisexual Mystery Parade" fan art on a t-shirt, please? I would wear the hell out of that shirt. Gold.
My Dad talks about "Gender Studies" as if it's Underwater Basket Weaving. He's brought it up multiple times as an example of ridiculous college majors that dumb liberals waste their money on
Born in 1990, grew up in a mostly conservative town, and my grandma listened to Dr Laura every day , my whole family votes solid Republican and loves Fox News, yet they have gay friends and had no issues with gay people. They just felt being racist, fiscally conservative and xenophobic was more important when choosing a political party
Dear Mike, I regret to inform you, that you probably got the adopted children analogy from Blair White in a convo she had with Ben Shapiro 😭
OH…I *knew* I’d heard that somewhere before. Ugh…🫣 Don’t even get me started on those two…
I love how conservative arguments are always WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN and then they turn around and cause actual harm to actual children.
That's the irony of that Simpson's reference. No one really thinks of the children, especially the ones saying it. They're thinking of themselves
Lifelong resident of Massachusetts here. When Mitt Romney was governor, he would only stop campaigning for President long enough to try to stop marriage equality. So part of me thinks it was passed out of spite and the thought amuses me.
"dUrInG tHe PaNdEmIc" I would love for y'all to take your dedication to debunking media fueled bs and apply it to this very obvious example.
Are you meaning you don't believe in the pandemic? Because they've done episodes on that.
I'm a volunteer Breastfeeding Counsellor in Ireland and in my area, we do use both Breastfeeding and Chestfeeding. The only bit of feedback I've received has been positive (most people don't say anything). Human milk is also used sometimes because it's the most accurate way to distinguish between difference infant milks, made from different animal milks (cow and goat). Many people don't know that there is a difference. Also not everyone can or want to feed at the breast or chest, and some prefer to used the term human milk.
Would love to know what the horror movie podcast is!
Absolutely wonderful episode! Wanted to share that i work in healthcare and my hospital converted all its language in policies to gender inclusive language including the chest feeding and pregnant persons. Its been a wild ride seeing how many of my peers have the moral panic level reaction to these changes where they really have no stake in the game. Language does change all the time and very frequently in healthcare. Its completely parallel to understanding gay rights back in the 2010s and making sure patients are protected in healthcare. Thanks for the discussion!
Another triumph. Thank you! With the ‘low hanging fruit’ (another possible band name/ second album title for Bisexual Mystery Parade) approaches, I wonder if there are conservative and progressive flavours? If conservatives have an imagined past to return to, progressives (particularly older ones like me) have/had an imagined future where we’d sorted all this shit out, but our definition of what the shit was had ossified in our 20s (ish) and ‘new’ shit is a challenge to the self image of the cool warrior…
Leave Brayden Bowers alone!!!
Thank you for also knowing who Aubry was talking about lol she right tho "King of the fuckbois"
Vertically-challenged monarch
Thank you. I have said Se-seven-en since I saw the DVD box art forever ago
Do you know which podcast Aubrey is referring to? I’d love to check it out 😂
I'll admit, as someone who lived through the 2000s, even I didn't have cloning on my anti-queer marriage bingo card.
The simultaneous "gay marriage will decrease fertility rates!" and "gay marriage means gay people creating clones of themselves!" really tells on itself, too!
It's 5PM Friday in Melbourne and *exceptional* timing for my drive home from work team 😍
Samesies!
Two days ago, the outgoing UK government enacted an emergency executive order against all prescribing of puberty blockers, claiming immediate danger. It really does feel like the 70s/80s/90s/00s ganged up and came back to bite us. Looking forward to listening
The level of pure evil required to play political football with trans kids astounds me. I don't say "evil" lightly. It's on the same level as drowning boatsfull of asylum seekers in the channel & His ex-Royal Former Highness Andrew the Sweaty.
