March '26 Progress Report

WOW! After many months, I have a new video, and that means I can finally bring back this section:

WHAT'S NEW ON PATREON?

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO?

Predominantly, making Tiny Little Lip Balm! I'm glad I chose to make this in a week because:

  1. It reminded me that, with my current workload, one video in a week is a bit outside of my capabilities, but 1.5 weeks was okay!

  2. It's a very current video, and things have already changed quite a bit since I started writing it, so it's good that it came out quickly.

I'm also very glad I chose to make this video, because I have good news and bad news on my next Midnight Gourmand video.

The good news: I filmed the next Midnight Gourmand video in its entirety!

The bad news: It didn't turn out well! Neither the recipes, nor the filming itself!

I literally have 2+ hours of footage that is no longer useful. Here's a screenshot for proof:

I thought that my current recipe was fine, but when I finished it up on the day, I realized that the new "salted egg yolk" popcorn powder I made was not fine enough to actually stick to the popcorn, and the rest of my recipes were just "eh," which is NOT THE EMOTION I want to evoke in a Midnight Gourmand experience.

I'm still figuring out what to do with this. I've gone back to the drawing board on my recipes, and I'm considering making a new style of Midnight Gourmand video that is short and sweet, just giving a <5 minute tip on what I like to do in the kitchen. If I go with that style, I may be able to get the video out in April, and if not, I will figure something else out!

WHAT'S UP NEXT?

April is a very busy month for me due to family events! I will be out of town for two weekends this month, so I have to focus heavily on some outside work: a video I'm working on for Magic the Gathering, followed by prep for MagicCon at the start of May! Lots of Magic stuff, huh?

On the YouTube front, I'll be kicking around the Midnight Gourmand ideas a little more, and if I end up having some free time, I may do another process stream of me writing a silly song about a spider that I saw the other day. My sincerest apologies to the arachnophobes in my audience. This video will not be for you.

THAT'S THE UPDATE

I'm really grateful for the kind responses to Tiny Little Lip Balm! I knew it was never going to be a hugely popular video, but it means the world to me to know that other people are connecting to an emotion that has been driving me bonkers for the past couple years. Hope you're all doing well!

Hi BDG. I really love your videos. This tiny lip balm video was upsetting as Iran paid criminals to firebomb a synagogue in Melbourne where I live and I'm really scared for what they will do next. We need peace ASAP.

I understand if it isn't the vibe you're going for in Midnight Gormaund, but I DO really appreciate when cooking videos leave the goofups in. Cooking can feel really intimidating when everything in the examples comes off perfectly, and mine is constantly burning or sticking or uneven. It is super valuable to see how a talented cook recognizes when things are going off the rails and improvises a solution!

A veeeeery late response, but I'm thinking about posting a (semi) edited version to the Patreon so I can explain both my culinary AND my video goofups! Can learn a lot from both.

A tip video could be cool! Give Jeremy a chance to really Flex His Edits. I am sorry the recipe didn't work out how you wanted, but I'd still be pleased to see the footage. Maybe a patreon release? So that if you do it again/differently, we can see what changed? And of course a songwriting stream is my jam, and it does seem to help your process...
