Stone Baby

The Mystery of the Stone Baby (Lithopaedion) – Vrolik Collection Case

Most people have never heard of a lithopaedion. Also known as a "stone baby." These rare and haunting medical phenomena occur when a fetus dies during an abdominal (ectopic) pregnancy and are too large to be reabsorbed by the mother’s body. To protect itself from infection, the mother's body calcifies the fetus, essentially turning it to "stone." Fewer than 300 cases have ever been documented in medical history.

One particularly compelling specimen resides in the Vrolik collection in Amsterdam, a world renowned museum of medical oddities. This preserved lithopaedion, collected sometime between 1950 and 1970, offers a rare glimpse not only into the biological process but also into the technological advancements that allow us to study it today.

Why is this case unique?

What makes this case stand out is the addition of 3D reconstructed CT imaging, offering an incredible view of how the soft tissues became calcified. Traditional X-rays often struggle to capture the detail, but the CT scans shown in the image above (Figure B) reveal the full complexity of the fetal skeleton and the extent of mineralization.

A Bit of a Twist:

Initially, the gestational age was estimated to be around 24–28 weeks based on external appearance. But once the femur was measured via imaging, it became clear the fetus was actually around 34 weeks developed. This discrepancy is common in lithopaedion cases, as the process of calcification, along with tissue wasting and compression, can make the fetus appear much smaller and more degraded than it truly was.

It’s a stunning reminder of the body's ability to adapt and protect itself even in the most unimaginable circumstances.
