Was hoping they would see heros come back as their first intro to Shippuden. Is there a reason they are skipping to the kakashi arc first before going back?
Yes the reason is that the Kakashi Gaiden Arc happens right between Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden in the Manga. The Anime just took forever to adapt it.

The Kakashi Gaiden is what appeared in the Manga right before "Shippuuden". So they are doing it in the correct order.

There was a fan vote if whether they'll watch Kakashi Gaiden before Shippuden or later. Majority voted before so that's why they are starting with those episodes....to be honest, it'll have been better later with the more impactful storyline coming up with the akatsuki etc. :)
