Hello, me again, I commented on the Harvey chapter a bit ago, today Im commenting on the latin because as a latinist I want to help you polish it. Comment on the latin, it reads like someone trying to force english into latin, rather than Latin-latin “Audite! O mundus testis! (Hark! Oh the world bear witness!) Canto ad gloriosum infinitum! (I sing to the glorious infinite!) O Gigantes, audite me! (Oh Giants, hear me!)” Audite O testes orbis terrarum! (Listen! Oh witnesses of the sphere of the earth (world) ) de omnibus superis cano (about everything of the higher-realms (heavens) I sing) Si placet vobis, o Gigantes, audite! (if it pleases you, oh Giants listen (to me) ) I'll explain the improvements line by line “Audite! O mundus testis! Ok, so first line Audite is ok, dont actually need the exclamation there it doesnt make sense in the latin the translation of audite is the main verb of that sentence O mundus testis. -> (mundus here is wrong it should be munde as a vocative) "listen o 'world-witness'" This is a bit weird so i changed it to Listen oh witnesses of the sphere of the earth! This is better as its the usual idiom for the world in latin (im aware the world here isn't a sphere literally but am assuming the arrival of latin in the world of the story carries the idiomatic language with it) Canto ad gloriosum infinitum! the meaning here would be something like "i sing towards the glorious infinite" hmmm this is just weird latin sort of like trying to force it into an english shaped box I changed it to de omnibus superis cano "about all things of the higher-realms I sing" cano on the end because its more usual to have the verb at the end and I chose cano because its a nice little nod to the opening of the Aeneid Arma virumque canō... etc .... "I sing of arms and the man..." likewise superis is the adjective used to describe the heavens drawn from the same section vī superum saevae memorem Iūnōnis ob īram; "by the force of the gods, on account of the mindful anger of cruel Juno" O Gigantes, audite me! Here the "me" is not necessary and I don't usually see it, audite is enough I added a Si placet vobis, "if it is pleasing to you" which is the idiomatic way of beseeching someone you see it in Cicero's speeches and letters as a polite but rhetorically sophisticated gesture. on the poetic side of things I enclosed it so it begins with and ends with audite to give a nod to a chiasmus sort of classical structure but technically what it is is epanalepsis terrarum and cano are nicely balanced going from the arum to ano -> its as sort of clausula-like cadential feel with the vowels going from closed to open You don't have to change it, but I can't leave the latin alone on instinct as it is. edit: Oh there's more latin, its late but yeah, again similar critiques of that which I could go into but too tired rn
Since this innworld and everything is derivative, the latin being flawed makes better sense, this place is an experiment to grow individuals that can fight gods, it's like a parody/fantasy earth - writing criticism's like this can alter the tone of the story even if they're *correct* they're not necessarily best, why should Merdon have perfect Latin? He would only know what the system gave him as a skill, not an actual command of the language.
great chapter as usual. But I think what the fans are really clamoring for is a new Persua chapter. C'mon who's with me!
Isn’t she essentially dead? Could have sworn her carrying the Eye gave her severe mana poisoning that may or may not have crippled her. Or at the very least is hospitalized very similar to Erin, just at a cheeper scale.
Who do we think the person who the Queen wanted to watch Lyonette was? Didn’t recognize the name off the top of my head. Queen trying to set up an arranged marriage already maybe?
She is the one who is mentioned in Interlude- Vernoue. A [Lady in Vogue] she is the one who shapes a narrative via rumors and gossip in favor of the Calanfer. You even could say she is a reverse Spymaster that manipulates Nobles and the populace to her ordered agenda. So all in all she the Spymaster and informant variant of the Royal family.
A very interesting viewpoint in the shared world ( skill) ? of intoxication. It was great to check in with home crew of.the Inn. It's definitely a more truthful first person perspective at suicidal thoughts or tendencies that I have read. Self worth is a currency sometimes so rare.
Agreed. The nuanced way that PABA handles memories of traumatic experiences has been very impressive. I think there’s likely to be backstory at some point about the new shared skill and implications of it.
Have not started reading yet, but I do hope for an at least moderately happy ending for Tessa. I have some personal stakes in that :P
the T stands for totally more kelt
