Mythic Update, August 2026

Greetings Mythicists! I hope all is well with you, and that your Player Characters sometimes take up a hobby ... it can't be spell casting and sword swinging all the time!

Here are some updates of what's going on around here:

Compilation #10 Is Fully Compiled

Mythic Magazine Compilation #10 is ready to be launched! The book is assembled and proofed, problems have been fixed, and the files have been generated. I expect to post it next week.

This one covers magazine issues 55-60. While I love all the articles that have graced the pages of the magazine, I do have my favorites (please don't tell the other articles!). Standouts in this Compilation for me are: "Escape From The Somnus Citadel", which was just a blast to write and is a nicely strange adventure; "Moonlight Radio", which is a concept I had wanted to do for years and it came out just the way I had hoped; and "High Point Adventures", which has been a personal favorite playing style of mine so it was nice to expound on it in the magazine.

Look for the PDF of Compilation #10 to launch soon, with a POD version following a month after!

Fate Focus

If you haven't already checked it out, Mythic Magazine #68 is available. The articles are "Fate Question Focus Table" and "Co-GMing With Mythic".

The Fate Question Focus table is interesting as it replaces the Fate Chart with a Context generating Focus table. It's similar to "The Detail Check Revisited" from issue #56 but tailored to Fate Questions to bring in the kinds of things you expect from the Fate Chart, just without the Fate Chart.

Issue #68 can be found on the Patreon and on DriveThruRPG.

I Don't Think He's Fixing A Tire

The artwork above is from the fabulous Jorge Muñoz, and is something I haven't placed yet in the magazine or a book. This is one of those images where I like it, especially how specific and unique the image is, and yet I'm not sure what's going on. The character seems shady to me, like he's a spy or saboteur.

So help me out, please ... if the image inspires a caption for you, please write it in the comments below. I'd love to see how you all interpret this :)

Mythic Magazine #69: Make Room For Villains

The next issue of the magazine is under construction. This issue features "The Room Crafter" and "The Villain's Plan".

The Room Crafter is a version of the Location Crafting system designed for a single room: randomly generate what the room looks like, then what you find when you explore it. This is applicable to any genre, from dungeon chambers to the captain's cabin on a starship.

The Villain's Plan is a system for randomly generating an unfolding evil scheme, but parceled out so you can sprinkle it through your adventure and figure out what's really going on. It's a multi-stage system, including the various pieces as you put them together, a generator for determining what the actual plan is, and a way to decide how the villain pivots once your PC's foil their plot.

That's it for now! Happy adventuring :)

The guy in the artwork is clearly on the run. He knows the only place he can safely hide is in the industrial part of town where the vagrants sleep rough under the trucks. Now, he's debating with himself, "Do I finish what I came here to do, or do I get the heck out of Dodge?"

“I’ve got to be in Houston in two days, but getting that hitch from Greg was a lucky turn. He got me clear across Arizona and New Mexico. Too bad he had to turn north to Wilsey, but I will find another ride.” … “Made it past Muleshoe before Bob had to drop me off. Been walking for hours in the dark. There’s lightning behind me and no lights ahead - this might be a wet night.” … “These are big fat cold drops of rain, but I see something ahead in the dark. No cars since Bob dropped me off, but maybe a building?” … “Ah! Some sort of graveyard for retired tractor trailers! I can sack out here under this trailer as soon as I check where I am on the map. … What was that sound?”

1. Under the truck, he is reading the map, his Emerging Powers not working at the moment... 2. Your Behavior roll was... poor and you now mark "panicked"... 3. A map you need to expand with City Crafter... 4. A Cozy Slice of Life Horror Shiver (yeah all three! Cozy! Slice of Life! Shiver!) 5. The Creature Crafter roll was... GAH, QUICK, UNDER THE TRUCK! GIVE ME THAT MAP! 6. You need to make a Detail Check on WHICH map you whipped out just now... 7. A Downtime event in the middle of a chase sequence... 8. Gather Your Crew... 9. Your High Point Adventure moved you from the swank party to here... 10. Fold once. Spindle and mutilate. Tear up in to a hat. Roll twice. Yeah. That's how you got here.

The rebel sabotuer makes final preperations as he hides within the parking lot of the dystopian regime's military base. He knows what he is about to do will send the nation into chaos, but the fires of freedom must rise, no matter the cost. The Leader must fall tonight.

#58's "Creating Dialogue with NPCs" has had a huge effect on me. Truly. Now I get excited running in to new people in the world, even if they are unfriendly. Absolute gold.

Oh, thank you :) I'm glad to hear that. I almost listed that one as a fave. I should have, I love conversations with NPCs too :)
