Mythic Magazine #67

Greetings Mythicists and happy end of the month to you :) The new issue has arrived. Let's pop it open and see what's inside!

Conceptual Adventures: Fill your Adventure Lists not with details, but ideas. Let concepts take over your adventures and lead you to a world of possibilities!

Emerging Powers: Let the awakening begin! Roleplay the emergence of hidden abilities as they slowly reveal themselves, bestowing new powers, and havoc, upon your characters!

I had a lot of fun writing both articles, but Emerging Powers was especially a joy because that's a favorite movie genre of mine. Hopefully, I did it justice!

Happy emerging adventures :)

The Emerging Powers section (Page 14, bottom of the page) says that once the Power Score hits 7, then it won't go higher from there. But the number 8 shows up a lot. I assume that this is a typo, and 8 is the max?

Yes, that's an error. Thank you for the heads up :)

I made a correction and uploaded a new file on July 1, 11am PST. The changes are on pages 20 and 35. There was an error in the length of the Clues table, it was too long. I shortened it and rebalanced it to, what I think, is a better distribution of elements.

I've been so excited for the Emerging Powers article all month. I can finally play my dream game with this, I think! As for Conceptual Adventures, I'll admit I was skeptical at first, but then I read it and realized--who am I kidding? I use TV Tropes in 2026, I live off this stuff! Great work as usual, Tana!

Thank you so much :) And tropes are awesome, right? lol I peruse TV Tropes for ideas sometimes, and I almost always tumble down a rabbit hole when I do lol If you didn't notice in the conversation above with Matthew, there's an error in the Clues List for Emerging Powers. I'm working up a fix for it; an updated magazine file is arriving in a few minutes :)

Love the way the Emerging Powers Crafter took shape. Like a combination of the Event and Mystery Crafter. Would be cool to see more things use a hybrid of systems in a different way. One thing that confuses me, though. And I might be reading into something wrong, but it seems like the Crafter List for the clues section has to many things on it to ever get used. If I understood it correctly, you only roll when you get a blank Clue on the sheet, so 4 rolls total (since if it is already filled, you just base it off the prior event). That's a +0 for the first clue, then +1, then +2, and final check at +3. On a d10, that only allows for a max of 13. Even if we assume that the other 3 rolls where all unique, we could only go down to the 16th slot, but it goes all the way to 18 (Teacher Steps Forward). Am I missing something on how often I should be rolling it? Otherwise, great magazine as usual. Can't wait to play my villain's solo story out to see how he developed his powers before they corrupted him.

Thanks Matthew, I'm glad you like it :) And thanks for pointing out the hybrid nature of Emerging Powers. I totally agree that combining systems can bring interesting results! I feel like I was able to make something unique with Emerging Powers, yet still use familiar tools, and that's by combining those familiar tools into something unique. We get the advantage of already half knowing how something works, while still getting something new as if it were a new mechanic. But it's not. But, it kind of is lol As to the Clue List, you are absolutely correct. That's my error. I'm going to fix that and upload a new file. This is how that came about ... I originally had 13 elements on Clues. I didn't want either List to be able to roll over. I wanted to skip the "... if you roll over then reduce Progress Points by 6 ..." rule. I had to fine tune each List so all elements were available at some point but you could never roll over. It started with 13 elements, recognizing what you noted about how Progress Points can only ever get up to 3 on Clues. Then I realized Unique elements could throw that off, so I boosted the elements from 13 to 18 because there are 5 Uniques. I overcompensated and forgot that Clues can only ever be rolled 4 times, and only up to 3 Uniques would ever be removed when a roll is made. So yes, the actual max should be 16, not 18. Also, I need to rebalance it. That mentor option shouldn't be at the tail end, they should be able to appear somewhere after the first Clue. Those are easy fixes, I'll post that in a bit. Thank you so much for pointing that out, and so quickly! :)

Your article about Conceptual Adventures comes at a good time. I've been doing some work on rethinking my own systems to replace specifics with what I'm calling "Archetypes": aspects of character creation, ways of generating adventure hooks etc... I tend to think of The Adventure Crafter as a giant Thread list filled with narrative tropes already. But the Character List one was interesting. I find that this list tends to be the one that trips me up the most in terms of maintenance and applicability of results. If I'm going to be stumped by a roll and not know how to use it - the Character List is probably going to be the most obvious offender. At the moment, I sometimes get around the issue by doing exactly what you are doing but with another step. I translate the detail into an archetype/concept and then I find a new detail that fits better.

It makes sense, doesn't it? I've been expanding the breadth of what the Characters List actually tracks since MGME2e and I can understand what you're saying about the List sometimes being frustrating. In MGME2e I considered renaming the List to something else, to reflect that it should not only track NPCs but events, ideas, and desired outcomes. In the end, I decided to leave it the "Characters" List because I didn't want to make it too confusing. After all, listing important NPCs is still it's main function. So I've taken the issue up on the other end: If I'm not going to rename the "Characters List" into the "Anything Interesting That Isn't A Thread List", then maybe what I should do is redefine what exactly a "Character" is. It doesn't have to just be a person or creature that can talk with you. A Character can be a place, a vehicle, a community, an object ... or a concept or trope. Really, what is a Character in an RPG or any literature for that matter? It's an element in the story that the protagonist interacts with, and that can be just about anything. Interestingly, Micro Mythic takes this concept a step further and simplifies it, and I'm beginning to see the wisdom in that. It has just one List where everything goes on it, including NPCs, Threads, and anything else you think is important. It's a much more open concept and I'm liking how that works. Micro's emphasis on simplicity lets me get away with it there since developing granularity in a game can be hard since all those parts need to play well with each other, but simplicity kind of smooths all of that out.
