Progress Journal, June 2025

Greetings Mythicists! Happy June to you, I hope your Player Characters aren't standing in water when their wizard fires a lightening bolt!

Here's a peek at what's brewing in the Word Mill Games Studio!

Compilation Updates

There are new editions of some of the current Compilations, and a new one about to appear. Compilation #5 is now available on Amazon as a paperback, and #7 will be available on Amazon in both paperback and hardback within a few weeks (assuming proof approvals).

Compilation #8 is almost ready, I'm just doing final proofing. That should appear in PDF form on DriveThru in the next week. After that, I'll work on the POD edition, which will hopefully follow within a month of the PDF.

Once those are done I'll get to Compilation #9!

Mythic Magazine #55

The next issue of Mythic Magazine is underway! This one will feature the Galaxy Creator, which takes the Star System Creator from issue #46 to the next level (maybe there should be a future Universe Creator??). The second article is Escape From The Somnus Citadel, an escape room style fantasy mystery adventure where you wake up having no idea who you are.

Return To The Solo RolePlayers Podcast

Tomorrow I sit down with PJ to record another episode of The Solo RolePlayers Podcast, where we will play some pirate adventures! I'm looking forward to this, since I had such a good time the last time around. I'm sure we'll get into some pirate shenanigans. Last time, we dabbled with Pirate Borg plus Mythic and ended up being responsible for disposing of a cursed corpse. Dead men may tell no tales, but sometimes they attract some really bad mojo!

Deadworld Dome Lives! Err, In A Zombie Sort Of Way At Least

Last month got away from me and I wasn't able to record an episode of the Mythic Magazine Podcast. This month we return to the adventures of Vi as we start a whole new chapter and a new focus! Things are heating up in the dome, and Vi finds herself at the center of it all.

One-Page Success Check

Work continues on Micro Mythic, as I finish up the One-Page Success Check chapter. This is Micro's task resolution system and combat system. All the one-pagers are modular, so you can connect them with other one-pagers, use them all as a full RPG, or plug individual one-pagers into your usual games. It's like a Mythic Lego set! Or, Swiss Army Knife? Choose the micro metaphor of your choice :)

Character Advancement

Work continues as well on Mythic RPG 2e. I'm nearing the end of the Adventures chapter, which is all about how to actually play the game. This is a chunky chapter, and I'm finishing up the Character Advancement section. I had originally planned on tying advancement into a special Fate Question to ask at the end of each gaming session, but I found this to be too clunky in execution. Instead, I'm opting for a simple point based system where you award yourself Build Points after sessions where major goals are reached. This ties in with how Character Creation works, so ongoing advancement is an extension of character creation.

I find myself more and more in the mental space in the design process where the game has reached or exceeded the complexity level I want, so I focus more and more on simplification and consolidation.

That's about all for now! Happy adventuring, everyone :)

I'll be honest; until now I had no idea how the one-page success check differed from rolling on the fate chart. I'm guessing it's a 1-page version of the "Mythic as a rules-light rpg' article?

Yes, that's pretty much it. It borrows some combat concepts from "Steal The Rebellion!" from issue #48 as well.

What's the average number of scenes you do in one sitting/session? How many scenes on the average does it take you to complete an adventure or accomplish a milestone? Will Mythic RPG be modifiable for people who play either more or less scenes than average in regards to advancement? Just some basic questions that occurred to me when hearing about character advancement.

Good questions :) Mythic RPG 2e doesn't assume any set number of Scenes per session. I purposefully wanted to make it so that a "session" can be anything, including a single Scene or fragment of a Scene. When it comes to advancement, the only requirement is that a major Thread is resolved at some point during a game session. So whether that's one Scene or twenty, it doesn't matter. By tying advancement to Threads instead of game time, the focus is on what's transpired in game time rather than the game time itself. The other form of narrative currency in MRPG2e is Fortune, these are points you get to modify the narrative as you play. These are also awarded based on Threads accomplished, although a few other factors can also be involved. Fortune is more fluid than Build Points (which are used for advancement).

Hope you're doing well, Tana! I am so behind on the magazine content, but I'm glad to hear how much you're pouring into 2E. I'm also quite excited for Micro! Cheers! 🍻
