Mythic Magazine #53

Greetings Mythicists! Welcome to the end of April. I hope your adventures are going well and your PC's haven't all skipped out on you to go

Greetings Mythicists! Welcome to the end of April. I hope your adventures are going well and your PC's haven't all skipped out on you to go play board games!

Speaking of board games ... this issue has an article that I've been thinking about for a long time. I got my start making solo games when I was a wee child, spending weekends lounging on the floor of my room scrawling out solo board games with paper and pencil. Now here's Mythic, playing board games!

This issue contains:

Discovery Prompts: Add an extra layer of meaning and context to Discovering Meaning by creating flavorful questions that inspire interesting answers.

Mythic As A Board Game Opponent: Mythic game mechanics are given a twist and applied to board games, any board game, allowing Mythic to fill the role of a player at your table.

Happy adventuring! :)

EDIT: A revised version of this issue was uploaded on May 16, 2025. It fixes an error on page 5, where an Adventure Creation Discovery Prompts element was listed twice.

Greetings Mythicists! A revised version of this issue was uploaded on May 16. It fixes an error on page 5, where an Adventure Creation Discovery Prompts element was listed twice. (The 1-4 element is the same as 21-24). You can redownload the file to get the corrected version.

Is the example game in this based on a real game? It sounds really fun. 😅

lol I was thinking halfway through it that if I had the time I would love to make an actual board game from this! It's not an actual game, but it's inspired by Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert. I don't like referencing actual products in the magazine; I'm not even sure why, it just doesn't feel right. So I tend to make up roleplaying games and other stuff to reference. That's probably a weird thing to do, but I'm so used to it now lol

I've only read the article on the board games so far, but I wanted to say: you didn't disappoint, thanks, that's brilliant! I love how the risk taking is factored in, and the recycle pool, with all the mechanics around it about handling hidden resources, is a super smart idea. As I was hoping for, this is not only going to help me play board games, but I can also see it being useful to play dnd combats, for example. For wargaming, I'm not sure what I would put in the Decision List because there are so many actions possible in a turn, and generalizing them as a few entries like "defend", "attack", "flank" does not sound like it would generate viable strategies, but I think it can be easily adapted (as you warned us from the very beginning it should ^^ ). For playing Warhammer 40k, I think I'm going to rewrite the Decision List at each turn, listing all the viable tactics that come to my mind for the turn, and rolling on those. That may sound cumbersome, but since a turn in 40k can take easily 15 or 30 minutes, it's barely an overhead. Also, I think I'm going to sort them by riskiness, and use the level of risk defined for the player as a modifier.

By the way: I love how your system perfectly scales horizontally. Why have one Mythic Player when we could have 2, 3 or 4? \o/

As someone with a large collection of boardgames that don't get played due to lack of players, I'm looking forward to reading about how Mythic can help.
