Who to artisize?
I have a question for the Mythicists! There have been so many examples written in Mythic Magazine, both small and Big examples, that I feel like I've missed a beat by not having Jorge make art for some of it. A few subjects have found their way from text to art, such as the mage's frog assistant and Brizas, but my question to you is ... which character do you remember from an example that you'd love to see Jorge make artwork for?
I can't do this as a poll, since that would limit the choices. I don't know what characters from examples stand out in Mythicist memories. So, I'm asking for you to comment below if there's a character from an example you remember whose name you'd like to throw into the ring. I'll pick one of those and include it in a future art request to Jorge, then get it in the magazine in a followup example from how they appeared previously.
So, what character do you think should receive the artification treatment?

While we are talking about inspiration from past things, how about turning things around a bit? Especially in the earlier magazines, the illustrations on the title pages rarely referenced any example/big example. How about you trying to write big examples inspired by those title pages. For instance, I was always intrigued by the title page of issue 2. That issue also has one of the most memorable big examples, but that example did not relate in any way to the title page. I would really love to see a big example containing that scene from the title page.
Ohhh, you mean the cover image of issue #2? The city setting with the interesting little alien folks in it. That's a great idea! Yeah, I rarely connect Big Examples to the cover art. Which, is kind of a shame, I know. I usually try to link the art to an article topic. My reasoning for not using it inside is I don't want to repeat the cover art again. However ... I could always ask Jorge to make the cover, and make another piece of art that goes with the cover, and use that for a Big Example. I did this in issue #47 because I wanted to use the kids on the cover as art in the mystery example. Okay, the more I think about this the more I like it :) Time for a policy change; I'll ask Jorge to include a piece of accompanying art with the cover to use it with a Big Example inside. Let's see how that goes for the next few issues. Thank you for pointing out the Big Example in issue #2. "Bayou On A Moonbeam" was one of my favorite examples to write. It's rare that a play example gets me emotional or choked up, but that one did.
There are actually two from the Red Book: 1. The metallic spider ambushing Eran and Sera in the gear room in the Tomb of Tumnus. The absolutely unforgettable example from the book. And 2. Gloranna with her soul-eating sword from the Extended Example.
Those are great examples :) I'd forgotten about Tumnus, but now that you say that I remember having fun writing it. I seem to recall you pointing out before my penchant for spidery things in my examples lol
So, I know I said I would use one of the ideas here and pass it on to Jorge, but there are so many good suggestions that I'm going to use more of them. They probably won't all happen at one time, but I'll see if I can sprinkle them over the next six issues or so. In that spirit, anyone who wants to contribute ideas to this thread please feel free to do so! I'll keep referring to here for art ideas until the ideas stop :)
Id love to see Professor Nathaniel Harcourt, a 1920’s era scholar of antiquity and explorer of the unknown and mysterious.
Ah yes! Issue #31, the One-Page Location Crafter :) That is one of my favorite issues, because Jorge's cover is just so perfect for the subject material, and I had so much fun making that Big Example that it's really stuck in my head right along with some of my favorite adventures. Excellent choice!
Two from the early, early days: (1) from Mythic Variations (or was it Variations II?) you had the example outline world building example of a barony? I'd like to see a map. (2) GME 1e had a different artist draw a comic panel of a giant mecha and a little girl. Now on your Mythic anniversary it occurred to me she would be in her late twenties/early thirties. Wild.
Oh wow, that is early days. I don't even remember that, and I can usually recall most of the early stuff. I'll go back and take a look at those. I've never asked Jorge to make a map before. That would be interesting, I may see if he's up to it. Wait. I do remember the girl and the giant mecha. That's from Mythic Variations I. The art in that back was done by Jorge, I think it was the very first project I worked with him on. (Or was that Creature Crafter?) When he mentions his old art to me, he sometimes feels embarrassed because his skill has developed so far from then. I think his old art is amazing too, but I won't argue the point with him lol. I bet if I asked him to update that image to show what that woman is up to these days he would be delighted :) I love this idea!
Sorry, this is not a useful answer, but I think you may want to know some of us exist: I skip the examples. 😅 I'm catching up with the Mythic Magazine Compilation books, and I have _a lot_ of reading to do, especially since I don't read Mythic only but alternate between Mythic and 3 RPG editions, so yeah, I tend to cut the corners. :) (I sometimes get back to this or that article when I need it, though, taking more time to digest it) That being said, I wasn't aware the illustrations where referring some specific characters, and I still enjoyed them a lot. In a system that is all about inspiration and interpretation, they make sense by themselves, and I often surprise myself imagining what is going on in those pictures.
You don't read the examples!! GASP! lol No worries, that's one reason why I place them in different type. I want them to stand out so people can find them to read them, or skip them easily if they don't want it. The illustrations don't always refer to the text, but I try to make them match as much as possible. I totally understand what you mean about Jorge's art, it's very expressive and often tells a story. I think his art is brilliant. In fact, a lot of the written examples are inspired by the art. I often start with the illustration, see what that inspires in me, and construct the example from that.
This is very much a non-answer, but I’d love to see an issue driven by Jorge’s amazing art, and you creating big examples of previous material or even new systems based on inspiration from the images. His art is such a huge part of the mythic experience for me, would be cool to see you collaborate in a slightly different way!
I think that's a great idea :) We've done at least one article in the past that was just Big Examples, but it would be fun to do that again with Jorge's art as the driving force.
I'm going to cheat a little bit with my answer, but I'll love to see art for the characters of the podcast (specially Vi and Dome Sish), they are also an example haha, just not from the magazines.
Oh, that's a good point! That's also a candidate for a magazine article, making it into a playable setting.
Oh, I should clarfiy, that it can be any example from any Mythic or Crafter book, not just the magazine :)
