Spooktober 2: Halloween (Carpenter, 1978)
The Same Log team - myself, Hellraiser bluray boxset star George Lea, and the consensus greatest stage Sherlock Holmes Elliot Chapman - return for New Years with a very seasonally appropriate look at John Carpenter's Halloween from 1978. The very definition of a film for which no introduction or explanation is necessary... except that, as we discuss, it really isn't the movie that most people seem to think it is! We try to either cover neglected material or to give fresh perspectives on better-known material, and this is a good example of the latter. Halloween is, as Elliot puts it, "a hauntological film masquerading as a slasher movie", which auto-analyses long before the supposed rise of the 'meta' slasher movie, in which the prototypical 'final girl' isn't one at all, in which the killer is sometimes not actually trying to kill, in which the values always attributed to the film are actually the values the film is critiquing, and in which the voice of moral authority in the narrative may be the real villain.
Also features quality digressions on the so-called 'Folk Horror Trilogy', M.R. James, Christopher Lee, etc...
Happy Easter everyone.
