New: Backer St. Irregulars ep 16 'The Yellow Face'
Kit, Daniel, and myself consider the Sherlock Holmes story 'The Yellow Face'. It's not what you might be thinking. Actually a very interesting story, and one of our more interesting conversations, I think.

Thanks for this. A really enjoyable discussion. This story and discussion put me in mind of Charles Chesnutt a writer who was an almost exact contemporary of Doyle, and was like Hebron, a light skinned African American lawyer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_W._Chesnutt Chestnutt's stories and novels explore race and colour in reconstruction America in (I think) really interesting ways. Not always comfortable, because like Doyle he was a man of his time so some of the tropes don't land well. The Wife of His Youth collection feels something like a collection of ghost stories where characters are haunted by race. The novels The Marrow of Tradition and The Colonel's Dream both resonate with current US politics.
