SOCIETY CHALLENGE - A new way to play The Sims 3

WHAT IS THE SOCIETY CHALLENGE?

Hi everyone! At the beginning of last year, I introduced the idea of Project Mayor, a concept that eventually evolved into the Social Classes mod for The Sims 3. My idea was that sometimes micromanaging Sims’ lives can feel a bit boring. Mundane and necessary? Yes. But not always the kind of challenge we’re actually looking for.
So I asked myself: What if, instead of being a god, I were a mayor? Someone who could directly impact Sims’ lives through their environment?

Over the course of yesterday, I developed what I call the Society Cards. They’re still in an early stage, but I’d love to know if this idea motivates you enough to try a new approach while playing The Sims.

The Society Challenge is a different way to play The Sims 3.
Instead of focusing only on a single family, you play while thinking about the entire city as if it were a living character.

You don’t ask:

“What does this Sim want to do?”

You ask:

“What kind of society is this city trying to be?”

HOW IT WORKS IN PRACTICE

The challenge uses cards to help you decide the direction of the city.

1️⃣ You draw a type of society

(This is similar to a Sim’s Lifetime Wish, but applied to the world you’re playing in.)

This also defines the city’s personality and gives you a long-term goal.

Examples:

  • a work-focused society

  • a creative society

  • a community-oriented society

  • a rigid, highly controlled society

This doesn’t tell you to do something specific.
It only defines the general mood of the city.

2️⃣ Every week (a Sim week), you draw 4 cards

Each card represents a basic need of the city.
(Just like Sims have needs such as hunger, hygiene, bladder, and sleep, cities have equivalent needs, but on a higher level.)

🏠 Housing
💼 Work & Economy
🎭 Culture & Leisure
🚑 Health & Safety

These things always exist in any city.

(Fun fact: Did you know that in The Sims 3, cities have hidden needs? These are what guide how Story Progression works.)

3️⃣ The cards give you “opportunities,” not orders

The cards don’t say:

“Do this now.”

They say:

“Look at your city from this perspective this week.”

For example:

  • A housing crisis has taken over the city: build new homes

  • Labor shortage: move Sims into different jobs

  • Boring city: create new cultural spaces

  • Negotiable well-being: sacrifice comfort in the name of progress

You choose how this appears in your game and decide how it should be interpreted for the type of society you’re building.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART

Sometimes the card seems to fit the society.
Sometimes it feels like the opposite.

And that’s intentional.

When something doesn’t fit, it doesn’t mean it’s a mistake. It’s a conflict.
Conflicts create stories.

A SIMPLE EXAMPLE

You draw:

  • Industrial Society (heavy labor)

  • Culture & Leisure card: “Artistic Explosion: Artists dominate the city”

This means:
A tired city trying to have fun in whatever way it can.

Maybe:

  • improvised parties

  • secret gatherings

  • art in the streets

None of this breaks the game.
All of it creates narrative.

WHY IS THIS FUN?

Because:

  • you don’t need to follow a script

  • each player creates a different city

  • there’s no “wrong” way to play

  • the game becomes a continuous story

You play with simple rules, but create deep stories.

My idea when developing this card system was to make what I find incredible and admirable (community challenges) feel less rigid. I wanted to find a more direct and practical way to limit what we do in the game, while not requiring players to read long instructions to understand it. Of course, as someone who loves writing, I still want to deepen this material, but I also want to make it accessible to everyone who isn’t interested in reading all the details.

I’d love to know what you think of this idea and whether you believe it’s worth investing time to expand the experience. Currently, we have 10 types of societies and 5 challenges on each need card. If you like the idea, we can expand it and take it even further. ❤️

Please leave your feedback here after testing it. That will help me a lot.
Thank you very much!

Footnote:
This idea was heavily inspired by SimCity Societies and Simsville. The long-term goal is to introduce specific requirements that make the experience more meaningful, such as assigning points to certain lot types and allowing each type of lot to “generate” special Sims who influence how the city evolves over time. The challenge will be to design this in a way that adds depth without turning the experience into spreadsheet management.
