Social Classes Mod for The Sims 3 – Research and Idea
Hi everyone! I’m back and wanted to do a quick survey about stereotyping and behavior to help build a Social Classes Mod.
In our mod, social classes aren’t just words: they manifest in the behavior of Sims and the choices they make. For this, we need some clear concepts:
1. Classes and Archetypes
Each Sim has personality traits that indicate which archetype they belong to: Artistic, Athletic, Intellectual, Popular, Rebellious, Ambitious, Romantic, Solitary, Partygoer, Odd. (provisional names)
Each archetype is associated with one or two social classes: for example, Rebellious → Lower Class, Ambitious → Upper Class.
A Sim can have traits from more than one archetype, but the most influential class determines their main behavior.
2. Locations and Behavior
Like attracts like: Public places attract certain archetypes while repelling others, creating social tribes or subcultures. (Think of The Urbz as inspiration here)
Example:
Art Gallery → wealthy and refined crowd
Local Dive Bar → poorer crowd
Directed behavior: Imagine a small alley with an easel and a graffiti kit. A lower-class Sim would choose the “lower-class” object (graffiti kit), while an upper-class Sim in the same alley (if attracted there for any reason) would choose the easel.
3. Objects and Attributes
There are two possible approaches:
Approach 1 – Objects with social class attributes
(See image: Each set of objects would belong to a social class. The higher the class, the greater the variety and quality of entertainment)
Objects attract Sims from specific classes.
Each class develops skills and engages in different interactions.
Examples:
Upper-class Sims → prefer quiet interactions, golf or classical music / more isolated experiences
Lower-class Sims → prefer noisy interactions, more group involvement
Result: behavior is more predictable and visually recognizable.
(See image below for a small categorization example)
Approach 2 – Neutral objects, only trait influence
Behavior guided solely by personality traits.
Less predictable and more emergent (more similar to the current game state)
Groups still form, but class differences are less obvious. However, Sims’ behavior is still somewhat more directed than it currently is.
4. How behavior works in Approach 1 (and why I recommend it)
Fun need + Trait + Social Class → determines which object the Sim uses.
By interacting with the object, the Sim confirms their class: lower-class objects increase lower-class points, and so on. This creates a kind of symbiosis: a lower-class Sim uses an object that assigns lower-class points, reinforcing their identity while shaping the environment they are in.
Sims can change social classes depending on interactions, but the most influential class defines dominant behavior.
💡 Summary
Approach 1 → more predictable, visual, and easy to observe classes.
Approach 2 → more free, emergent, less “classist” (for lack of a better word xD).
Both approaches work, but the choice affects how the player perceives and follows behaviors.
Question for you:
Which approach do you find more interesting? We’d love to hear your opinion to help shape this mod! If you have any suggestions on how it could work, I’d be thrilled to hear them.
I sketched this approach while waiting for my appointment yesterday, and although it takes some effort, it’s simple to implement without relying on scripts. What we’re doing here is reimagining how things work and bringing a less random approach to Sims’ behavior.

the whole idea with either approach to objects still gives Sims way more personality and preference than they have right now, so great either way!
Thank you so much Alex!! Happy to hear it!
