Idées Robes fashion sketchbook summer 1954
This fashion sketchbook provides the following trend analysis report for summer 1954:
The look for summer is one of youthfulness. Open necklines, low waisted styles, short straight or pleated skirts, full ballerina skirts, details and ornaments full of fancy, cheerful colours all contribute to the creation of a supple, lively, and above all youthful line.
Morning dresses are in tweed, jersey, flannel or alpaca, belted in leather, with skirts alternately straight with single walking pleat, closed in a wrap style, or pleated. Tailored garments feature classic lapels, short or three-quarter length sleeves with cuffs, and original details such as bibs, vests, and buttoning. Others, in a more relaxed, shirt style, are gathered at the top in a yoke or under the bust into a fitted midriff; their necklines are flat, the collar often being replaced by an insertion, bow, white trim, or a delicate dickey. Collars, trims, and plastrons in piqué, organdy, or cotton enliven the models in neutral-toned woolens; the set-in sleeves are gathered at the shoulder and sometimes long for city wear. The use of tabs, buttoned or unbuttoned, is frequent: closing collars and bodices, edging cuffs and pocket flaps, holding gathered drapery, replacing martingales or half-belts, highlighting seams, connecting a skirt to a bodice, they indulge in a thousand fancies in the pursuit of new effects.
Buttoning gains in refinement what it loses in size; some are asymmetrical and arranged obliquely, others grouped irregularly or forming geometric shapes (most often triangular); many fancy buttons are used, with wood, ivory, horn, and metal being particularly fashionable. Pockets are rare and discreet, some placed diagonally on the skirt and half-concealed under a pleat, others set into a seam or extending from it; a few, however, contribute to the widening effect of the bodice. It is only in the country models in canvas or cotton that they reappear frankly, flattened on the skirt and highlighted with stitching.
Dresses are often worn with three-quarter length jackets or with boleros; some are designed as two-pieces with a very short peplum and a matching fabric belt tied at the front or fastened with buttons. Afternoon models seek originality with necklines embellished with interesting details: draping, bows, cascading effects, fabric folds; wide sweetheart, trapeze, oval, or boat necklines; sometimes a contrasting fabric overlay, a lapel, or a modesty panel in white linen softens the neckline. A rounded and smooth shoulder is achieved thanks to the construction of the sleeves in kimono style or with a low circular armhole and the arch-shaped seam along the top. Various methods are used to accentuate the fullness of the bust: scarves, draping, shelf-bust designs, fan-shaped darts. Many are princess-style dresses with long darts that smooth the hips, but also many dresses with high draped or tied belts. In very formal and evening gowns, skirts are fuller and embellished with gathers, pleats, quilted padding, piping, or ruffles.
The fabrics used are fine woolens, twills, crepes, grosgrains, ottomans, mixed fibre fabrics and all prints, whose continuing popularity is justified by the novelty of their floral, Chinese or checkered patterns and their harmonious colours. Evenings will also see a great deal of taffeta, tulle, organdy, and lace; finally, for the countryside and the casino, linen and piqué fabrics are added, suitable for all hours. Shoulder pads and scarves moderate the deep necklines of gala dresses, whose bodices are sometimes adorned with sumptuous embroidery.
The colours for morning are navy, grey, and the whole gamut of beige to mustard; in the afternoon, bolder tones also appear, such as bright red or peacock blue. For summer, pastel shades, alongside navy, tortoiseshell, orange, and white, are perfect for country and beach dresses, as well as for capri pants, shorts, and flowing jackets.
