Magazine: Home Notes 17 July 1915

While popular memory often celebrates the land girls and factory workers of World War II - figures who have come to symbolise women’s contribution to modern warfare through posters, films, and national commemorations - the role of women on the home front during World War I is far less widely recognised or understood. Yet between 1914 and 1918, women in Britain stepped into an extraordinary range of responsibilities as the demands of total war reshaped everyday life.

With millions of men serving at the front, women became essential to maintaining the nation’s economy and infrastructure, taking on physically demanding and often hazardous work while also supporting their families and communities. Their contributions not only helped sustain the war effort but also marked a turning point in changing attitudes toward women’s capabilities and their place in society.

Women entered industries that had previously been closed to them, including munitions factories, engineering, and shipbuilding. These workers manufactured shells, explosives, and other essential supplies. The work was demanding and dangerous, with long hours and exposure to toxic chemicals like TNT, which could cause serious health issues. Beyond factories, women also took on roles in transport, policing, and civil service, helping to keep the country functioning during wartime.

In addition to industrial work, many women contributed through agricultural labour as part of the Women’s Land Army, ensuring food production continued. Others served closer to the front as nurses with organisations like the Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs), providing medical care to wounded soldiers in hospitals both in Britain and abroad.

This issue of Home Notes magazine from 1915 includes an 8-page feature on women's war work, offering a glimpse of the range of "splendid opportunities" open to women at that time including lift [elevator] operator, barber, and the "very new profession" of cinema operator. You'll also find articles on lawn tennis, dressmaking hints and tips, the Art of Politeness, and the latest fashions.
