Star Wars: Outer Rim - Hotshots Expansion

I'm working on an episode right now covering Hotshots, the fanmade expansion for Star Wars: Outer Rim.

This is a cool little expansion that adds some great options to an already great game. However, it is VERY expensive! Probably the most money I've ever spent on a game for the amount of content it adds. But I'm not complaining about the price. Printing these kinds of high quality components is expensive, and I'm very happy with the overall quality.

I do really like Outer Rim, and now that I'm back into fully loving all things Star Wars, I'm liking the game even more. I can even see it making it's way onto my top 10 adventure games of all time. As far as sandbox adventure games go, I think it's a really good one. It captures this kind of Star Wars theme well.

The official expansion, Unfinished Business, really is a requirement for me. The base game, IMO, feels incomplete without it, especially for solo play.

Hotshots is not nearly as essential. If the base game is the cake, Unfinished Business is the frosting that makes it great, and Hotshots is the layer of candy sprinkles that makes it a little bit better.

In this expansion you get a handful of new characters, including Din Djarin with the Grogu bounty, and I love this because I absolutely love everything having to do with Mando and baby Yoda.

You also get more ships, more contacts, and more databank cards.

You also get two new module components - garrisons and space travel events.

Garrisons are like patrols on planets, and if you have negative influence with the faction controlling the planet you have to have ground combat with the garrison when you land on the planet.

The space travel events are a new deck of encounters you draw from when you travel 4 or more spaces during your movement.

Both of these add a little more spice to the game, and I enjoy them.

If you really like Star Wars: Outer Rim, and you have the money, I can recommend this expansion. It just adds more variety to help make the galactic sandbox feel more alive.

However, it's not something that I'd consider essential, so don't feel like you're missing out on all kinds of great things.

Looking forward to the video. I have the core box and expansion on the shelf, but haven't found the itch to get to it yet. I'm curious, with the fan-made content if it's obvious that you are about to draw a fan-made card since manufacturing differences are probably there? I haven't played the game yet, so maybe it's a non-issue, but I could see a situation if you know what you are about to draw, you could game the system. Also interested in how IP legality works in this instance. Do the creators have a license to put the logo on the box, etc. Does the IP care, does FFG? Very interesting.

All fanmade stuff is entirely unlicensed. It's up to you if that's an issue or not. This is obviously made using Lucas/Disney/FFG IP. No legal grey areas here, it's pretty black and white. Personally, it doesn't bother me. The cards do stand out a bit, but it doesn't really matter and makes almost no different unless you take the time to memorize everything. I can barely remember my own phone number most of the time, so I'll ever have an issue. Even if I did know, and I did game the system, that would only impact my own enjoyment of the adventure so I wouldn't. :) You should definitely play the game! It's great.

Insta-buy. $158 plus shipping and tax without the box. No regrets.

Yep. I don't regret it, but damn! It's expensive. I'm very happy with it, though.
