I genuinely love that he doesn’t agree with his past self who was a bit disrespectful. Cause the main reason I started watching Helluva boss when I was younger was because I wanted to get into more adult shows but hated sitcoms and the disrespectful nature of a lot of other shows, I’m sensitive okay, so a person I respect wanting to be more nuanced and respectful about media, matters to me. And Danny wasn’t even that annoying in the past. Just made some comments that implied he was above some things, which we all do to some extent.

I think the reason it works on her , seemingly out of nowhere bc the whole time before she had her guard up so it was more cringe than anything but at that point in the end is she DIDNT expect anything like that to happen especially since the other times were around other people so he could not get TOO close. She has “sisters” who are sex workers so the art of seduction is probably not something she’s unfamiliar with so she can steel herself against it when prepared… It’s kinda like reading someone’s first ever smut fanfic at 3 am, when you are sleep deprived, and thinking it’s the hottest thing ever(aka her at the end of the ep) vs like 6 hours later going back and cringing HARD.. I like she is not “immune” bc her being ENTIRELY immune bc it encourages him to actually TRY and to look for openings or weaknesses in her… Which is funny to me lol Though I HAVE heard that the author added romance against their wishes which I think is very sad… it would not take away from my experience if there was no romance imo (even though I do like it

Mad respect for that intro. I never had an issue with Danny’s first take on AD because I’ve felt that way too about some insanely popular (overly glazed) series, mainly Frieren. But hearing his self-reflection, I’m thinking maybe I should give it another genuine chance with that kind of mentality. I’m also sat for Danny’s uncanny predictions. That read on the symbolism hinting at the toxicity under the surface of the palace was so on point. I’m impressed. I love it when he locks in like this.

I will admit that when I first saw apothecary I was really exited when I heard it fit i to the things that Danny liked in the fact that it's not romance anime. It really bummed me out when he said he hated it, especially when he watched at least 4 episodes which.... hello? But I enjoy that he admitted and made it clear. And I guess this is the main reason I finally came over to watch this now. Enjoy it very mutch.

From the fact that the servants are either there voluntarily because their families are so poor they're willing to risk their lives (servants can be killed on a whim), they are kidnapped OR their own families sold them off. That's not even touching anything spoiler related but let's just say you're gonna HATE a certain character who is not present during the present time of the show.

This is why I love watching your content, not just are you funny and entertaining to watch, but you address past things that you have done that you think could be harmful, and it shows that not only are you engaging to watch, but you genuinely care and try to be a good person. And I love supporting people who actively work on themselves, and that actually care!

Little fun fact Danny lead was used in makeup for CENTURIES, and people only clocked it was poisonous in the late 1800- early 1900s. Hell in the early 1900s there was a kind of green paint that had arsenic in it and people put that shit of EVERYTHING! Just think about how only a few decades ago we learned how bad asbestos is. All this to say the use of lead to whiten makeup would be considered totally normal at this time to these people, and unless you are trained to heal people who wear it regularly (like Maomao with the courtesans) you would never catch the pattern.

I feel like it gets intense but also tries to stay lighthearted when it needs to. It takes itself seriously and the situations seriously but because Maomaos personality is the way it is, the processing of it is easier to handle. Ive also read the books further and other characters who you are introduced to in season 1 and 2 get more of a personality which is more realistic in the books. And this is a slow burn romance. Which i personally like. It focuses more on maomao and the politics and life around her than it does on romance.

I am super excited to follow this! I absolutely love Apothecary Diaries and have actually never seen your original opinion or reaction to it. So hearing about it for the first time via your apology was surprising, tbh. I am glad to see you're liking it a bit more this time around! I can see why the romance between Jinshi and Maomao might initially seem unexpected. Personally, I love the read that Maomao is a bit of an unreliable narrator and is honestly a bit neurospicy in her reactions to things, including him. It's especially easy to see in the light novels bc she's straight up like annoyed by how beautiful he is. Last thing I wanted to mention was that weird little part where she notes that they "didn't go all the way", I thought it was hilarious that Danny connected it to her job as a laundress. When I saw that, I was like, tbh, makes sense bc she was raised in the red-light district in a brothel.

I think it ties into something you said in a previous video or clip where you mention how you want to experience the best pieces of a genre in media, such as what people push as the best mystery or sci-fi story, so on and so forth. That kind of desire to learn and experience things while pushing past your own comfort zone cultivates a great deal of respect. Good on you!

In the novels Maomao's 'charm resistance' is often described as her looking at Jinshi like he's a worm or bug. It is also described that Jinshi likes this, to the point where other characters have asked her to try to not look at him like that because he likes it too much.. take that as you will

re: the aphrodisiac, chocolate actually is an aphrodisiac but obviously we in the world of mars bars and snickers and reese's, having grown up with chocolate very readily available, have built up an immunity to it. meanwhile in feudal chinan't, chocolate is not as readily available, so it would have a stronger effect

I always took Maomao's reaction to Jinshi as more apathetic than aromantic. She's got a very sex neutral attitude from growing up in the pleasure district. (As seen when checking on the status of the drugged ladies in waiting), so she views sex and intimacy in a very clinical, logical, and matter-of-fact way rather than experiencing a typical personal or emotional reaction to it.

DANNY LOOK. I 100% understand your critique of wishing Jinshi’s method of finding Mao Mao was more clever. But if you rewatch the scene you can find that all the girls in that room have freckles. The novel explains it better but basically, he was able to find out from witnesses that the person who was looking for(Mao Mao) was a short girl with freckles. And by the fabric he was able to tell that this person wasn’t the lower class. So what he did was basically gather up all the girls with freckles from lower class into a room AND THEN wrote the note. He was able to single Mao Mao out because she was the only one who reacted to the contents of the note

She is resistant to his charms when he's being fake. When he's being himself and not a terrible flirt she does find him attractive.

the part at 3:58 is soo real as a reader I always kind of glaze over books, skip lines too fast without really thinking about them, sometimes even missing important pieces. in the past year i became friends with a transfer student from Germany who's really into literature and such, so i read to him while he still learns how to read english. and in that experience of reading outloud, preparing myself to explain things to him, give my own opinion on the text, its really broadened my reading comprehension.

I'm so glad Danny decided to give this show a second chance! I always thought ancient Chinese inspired apothecary Sherlock is a vibe he would completely love, especially since the show raises the stakes significantly in the second season! It might not be as hype as something like witch hat atelier, but the writing and characterization are definitely a step above a lot of the other anime he's watched on the patreon (which I also love, they're just goofier)!

Watching someone who doesn't know about poisons watch this is interesting. I haven't finished the video so idk if its mentioned, but they just ate chocolate. Chocolate is an aphrodisiac. Most modern people are unaffected by it. We eat strange ingredients in our food all the time, but in the past chocolate was not common so it would have a stronger affect on people who dont usually have access to it. Also the white face powder had lead in it. Lead has permanent long lasting affects. Consistent exposure will definitely kill you.

Short book rec you should read ‘fear and trembling’ by Amelie Nothomb, I read it in one sitting and it’s so funny and has some great commentary on the Japanese hierarchy and working world

I actually really like that there hasn't been any intentional poisoning in the show. I think it showcases how tense and on edge everyone is, always ready to assume murderous intent. I think it's interesting that these people who are scared of getting murdered facilitating the circumstances for poisoning themselves by having their servants and townsfolk uneducated.

So, chocolate is a bit of an aphrodisiac. It's not really like this, it can induce feelings of relaxation and arousal.

This one's a ride, your just in the warm up period for now. Genuinely one of my favorite shows.

I wonder if part of the boringness you initially experienced comes from watching the dub. In my opinion, while most of the dub actors work perfectly well, the two that don't work for me are, unfortunately, Jinshi and Maomao. Maomao is very monotone and emotionless, which is captured extremely well in the Japanese version. In the dub she's a little too emotional and...normal-sounding. Jinshi on the other hand is emotional, playful, and his voice is silky. It sounds like others are saying that this English VA is used for seduction so maybe it really is just me, but the English voice actor to me sounds fairly monotone and not emotional or bubbly enough to me. And to me it gives the dub just overall an...offness. I could see that offness translating to boringness for some. I fear this will make me sound like an elitist sub only, that isn't my intention. Dubs are perfectly valid to watch. This one just doesn't work for me. I have no idea if watching the Japanese version would run you into particular issues as a reactor, but I would personally love to see you try out the Japanese version for a few episodes and see if you like the voices better. Edit: OH! If you're worried about the audience not seeing the subtitles because it's flipped, on my videos I take the show part of the video, flip it, but I duplicate the visual part so there's a version facing the right way underneath. Then I crop the flipped version so that the audience can see the subtitles the right way, even though everything else is flipped.

Really loved the opening statements. I'm a relatively new viewer so I didn't see that era, but something I've always loved about your videos is that even when you don't like something you are usually still able to see why others like it and point it out. You always seem to be on the lookout for things you like in a piece of media, even if the piece of media isn't overall for you, and it's one of the things that make you my favorite reaction youtuber. So many other reactors think crapping on media is funny, and I really love the positivity you bring to the table.

Yeah, so the thing about this show is that it’s a period piece set in feudal China much in the same way Bridgerton is a period piece of England’s regency era. Which is to say they’re really not period pieces at all, and are basically set on alternate timelines that just borrow a ton of the aesthetics and take considerable liberty with their accuracy. Apothecary Diaries borrows from different Chinese dynasties that stretch more than 600 years of their history, both in therms of visuals and plot devices that will appear in later episodes.

It's fine, Danny. You don't have to like the Apothecary Diaries! I love this show, literally tied for my favorite of all time. Shounen are pretty much the big "mainstream" at least here in the U.S. Especially back in the 90's and 2000's. I feel like as we get older, a lot of people start to expand beyond just the stereotypical fighting anime built around the hero's journey (which tbf, a lot of american culture is classic hero's journey in their story telling for youngins too, there's a reason it's the classic story archetype, it resonates with young people). It's good to see you giving stuff like this a second chance and expanding your horizons.

I think AD has a good combination of genuine accidents, opportunistic poisonings, planned poisonings, 5D chess and just. "Our plans are measured in decades". The first few episodes give us a nice sampling of several of these. And there wouldn't be much of an overarching story if there wasn't an antagonist for Maomao to test her mettle against. And that's all I'll say.

Honestly I did not like the Apothecary Diaries at first so I kept watching season one a few times over because I was curious as to why people found so amazing about it. I never liked the first half of season one but the second half I started to get into. I did greatly enjoy the historical accuracy without glorifying the ugly past and ugly sides but taking them seriously and not hiding them, I found it a tasteful and none crude way to include it into the story. Now I'm addicted to the story after season 2 and started buying the books :/

im so glad youre watching this show!! ive been i huge fan of apothecary diaries for years and i dont think it could be a show you really enjoy, maomao is such an important character to me as an autistic woman, because whilst she isnt explicitly stated to be autistic (autism wasnt recognised at this time) she and a few other characters are show ALOT of autistic traits (ie. her "dance" she does in the pharmacy being an example of stimming, her special interest in medicine/poison, her strong sense of justice, and her nonchalance to anything not relating to medicine, just to name a few) that really resonate with me and my experiences and i have a lot of love for how her neurodivergent traits are portrayed and how the other characters react to them. i hope you grow to love and respect this show as much as i have <3

Cosplay Gambit, I think you could really pull it off physically (note, the muscles are an armor piece in the older comics), but act it poorly... and tag Nik Clayton with it. You're pretty mich right on what aphrodisiacs do, and they're way more common than people think. Chocolate and cayenne pepper are two examples, they improve blood flow which is one reason they're considered aphrodisiacs. I think technically the thing about nosebleeds is true because of the blood circulation property, but you'd have to eat a ton or have an extremely low tolerance to them for that to really be a concern

I really enjoyed this reaction, and I'm glad Danny seems to enjoy it more this time. I think what makes this anime so great to me is the fact that MaoMao is genuinely unhinged AF, but the show makes it seem like not as big a deal as it should be. I'd genuinely be worried if I encountered someone who enjoys eating poison and uses their own body for medical experiments. That is a textbook example of a comic book villain.

I finally decided to join your patreon and the first thing I saw was that you just started a reaction to one of my favourite anime! I'll be vague, but I think you'll enjoy it more and more with each episode 💚 Also, you have great timing since season 3 will premiere this fall. Btw, when you started talking about thinking of another anime to start on YouTube, I thought I'd recommend Baccano! tho I have to mention its ups and downs. UP: it's only 16 episode long, has great jazz music, fun characters, takes place in the USA in the 30s (mostly), has exactly 3 very short pervy scenes and the dub has great accents DOWN: at times the violence is quite graphic, the plot is hard to follow at first and the show itself is quite old and not super famous. Still, I thought I'd recommend it. I think it's one of the best anime series of all time and has a fantastic comedy duo. The show basically answers a never before asked question: what if a gang, a terrorist group, a mafia and a bunch of other criminals decided to rob the same train? And what if some of them were immortal?

i still believe that this anime would have been a fantastic historical yuri

Honestly I was so nervous watching this because of that clip from the podcast cuz you like the person and the show but then knowing that you might be making the person miserable for suggesting it feels bad

Also Maomao and Jinshi are both just dense af in their own ways about emotions, they are really good at dancing around each other when it comes to if they like each other (on purpose and not)

So part of the reason the other servants got all like THAT in ep 2 is because technically chocolate IS considered to have minor aphrodisiac properties, and if they’d literally never had chocolate before (def a rare and expensive good), even just a little regular chocolate (like those Maomao made herself), would be a kick in the pants to them 🍫

The opening address made me like Danny even more than I did before. I can always respect someone who can self-reflect and strive to be more like the person they want to be; Danny addresses issues he finds in shows and movies with such consideration and has taken purposeful choices(especially recently) to not disparage shows he doesn’t like, and I really appreciate all that in his videos. It makes for compelling content and makes me happy just watching the videos.

I do love this show and its very much a slow burn, mystery build up in the background and if you aren't paying attention you don't notice that its building and end up coming out of no where. jinshi's move at the end did NOT work on maomao, for the record- she was startled and afraid because of the physical and literal positioning- he has a great deal of power over her. jinshi does not know how to flirt respectfully, partly because he hasn't learned to respect *maomao* this early on. your instincts are correct but the burn is super slow, there's nothing really there right now.

In old Danny defense I never thought that his comment about the show being boring was that bad. I love apothecary diaries but I fully understand that not everyone would think the same. That said I'm glad you are giving it a second chance.

I'm glad you are giving this show a shot it's one of my favorites only second to ascendence of a bookworm. The moment I finished the first season I bought all the Light novels available to read more and have been obsessed ever since. I adore Maomao. Fun fact older face powders contained lead that's what was killing them lead poisoning. I was curious how much Danny knew about stuff like that to see if he would clock it lol but I know not everyone knows about older makeup lol. Hearing him bring up some stuff though like the paper thing gets me excited to see how he reacts so certain things coming back up in future episodes there are others but him mentioning paper gets called back multiple times so I'm excited. And I won't give anything away cause I'm super far into the light novels by this point but I'll just say I LOVE Maomao and Jinshis relationship and they do a really good job of.... showing it and all the complications that could come with it and how they handle it...that's all I'll say no spoilers here.

1.) Danny I think you did a really great job appreciating the anime and art. Even if it’s not something you are typically entertained by. 2.) I think you would benefit from one of those color match consultations. As you get more into fashion and what does and doesn’t look good. I think finding colors that help highlight rather that bleach you out would be helpful

You have always been amazing at finding what other people appreciate in things that don't necessarily reflect your taste in media, and thinking that apothecary diaries is boring is a reasonable conclusion if it's not your style. I never thought of what you said as really offensive or anything, but thank you so much for acknowledging the context of sexism that surrounds the series, or any series with a female lead in this community, and how you could have put your thoughts to words better. I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with someone saying "don't even bother to check it out" about a show they found boring. Like, in the specific case of The Apothecary Diaries I disagree, I think it's very good, but offering honest opinions, including negative opinions, of shows is in general a good thing.

I feel like we can all relate to having grown as a person and looking back at who we used to be and resenting that version of us. But not everyone creates a chance to make up for that versions mistakes, so good on you man. Besides if not for the flaws we recognize in retrospect we would have no desire to grow and improve to become the people we want to be, if not the one's we were ment to be. Ahhh so excited for this!! AP is one of my favorite anime of all time. And yes, one of the reasons why it’s my favorite is because most of these early plot threads feel very disconnected… until later. The author of the original light novels is so good at weaving all of the story threads together and it makes a lot of this stuff so good when you look back on the series.

Maomao is almost certainly on the spectrum. And I mean that in the best way possible. Absolute high functioning autistic savant. Also, all of the poisons in this series are actual real world poisons. And chocolate in and of itself is considered an actual aphrodisiac. It also has pain releiving properties. Hence its popularity at certain times of the month.

Hearing the dub is so weird! Mao mao doesn't feel as nonchalant in English 😂 but I'm here for it. I can see why old Danny might not have liked this. The start is a little slow if you're not picking it apart and analysing it. Hope you grow to like it this time!

Ngl, gonna send my friend the tiktok of your apology cause I got into watching you from Epic reactions (I know, I'm basic), but she got rubbed a bit of the wrong way by some older Hazbin or Helluva reactions and wasn't interested when I mentioned the Epic reactions. I was confused by that cause I had only seen good stuff and didn't understand why she'd be upset. Now, seeing that clip, I can maybe get it, but your apology might get her to see your new stuff with me cause I love your reactions. On the topic at hand, I think you will really find how even though this is Not Feudal China tm, there is a lot of real science in the show. Ex: TECHNICALLY Chocolate IS an aphrodisiac and probably felt potent af in a world where there is no Viagra, especially if you are well versed in the knowledge of medicines, poisons, and the like and could focus on that aspect of cacao. It's been a minute since I saw season 1, but I know the white powder comes back and I *believe* I remember what makes it so white (if you draw on your memory of Six the Musical, you might figure it out). When that reveal happened, I was soooooo interested because yeah! It IS poison and no one quite knew why it was causing problems until that was discovered. So I am excited for your watching experience.

Chocolate itself is a mild aphrodisiac. The treats Maomao made were coated in the leftover chocolate. The actual medicine she made had chocolate + other things to make the effect stronger. The reason the treats worked so well on the girls is because they don't have common access to aphrodisiacs unlike in modern society where most of us have chocolate and other similar effects while still young and therefore build a resistance.

I know Danny will like, never see this, but since he talked about wanting to be a source of positivity I can definitely say his content has been that for me lately. I just went through something really scary, but sitting down to watch this video has helped me calm down. Like a lot. Just to shed some light on your confusion on why Maomao was so chill about being kidnapped. In feudal China it was common to sell of your daughters to men as wives or to various business as servant girls. So people being people some folks take advantage of this by kidnapping girls and selling them for profit. This runs rampant in poorer areas and so Maomao would not only know this to be a thing but it would be a thing she would actively look out for. Of course Maomao is also something of a realist and so when it happens to her she just accepts her reality, keeps her head down, and seeks away to get the most out of it without making waves.

I super appreciate the section at the beginning. to be honest I wasn't really upset with what you said on otakus anonymous, I was just thinking it wasn't really your thing which i was totally cool with, but I think the point you made about your critiques being more constructive and trying to find positivity is a really good one and a great perspective to have. When you talked about apothecary diaries last time, you said you weren't really a fan of the setting due to the complex politics and such. I took that to mean you probably wouldn't enjoy Mo Dao Zu Shi/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation/that one show based on those novels written by the same author as Heaven Official's blessing. because Mo Dao Zu Shi is very very politics heavy and kinda hard to follow, even though the zombies and magic fighting is very very VERY cool. so for now I wont hold out hope that you'll watch it because i'd rather you watch something you enjoy than try to force a show that you don't like on the channel. but if while rewatching apothecary diaries the politics and mysteries start to grow on you, let us know, so I can hold a lil hope you might like it lol. Cacao actually has natural chemicals that mimic the feelings of attraction and euphoria. So not a aphrodisiac, but makes your brain feel warm and fuzzy. And the funny thing with viagra, it was actually created for people suffering from heart issues and high blood pressues. Just cause it’s easy to get this mixed up with the wording used, the babies don’t get the white powder put on themselves. The wet nurse to the daughter and the mother of the son (can’t remember if he had a wet nurse on top of that but if so her as well) apply the white powder to themselves as part of their make up routine (daily ritual). It just reaches the babies through their milk supply. And just cause anime hair colors are what they are I will tell you red hair follows our real world genetic logic and not main character anime logic like the green and purple do.

I totally get not liking Apothecary Diaries. I love it but the first season is basically just a quirky retelling of Sherlock Holmes (right down to some of the plots). That being said, season 2 really expands the universe but also tackles some much darker plot lines…. And that is saying something considering some of the topics broached in the first season. Also I feel it is important to know that Moamao means little cat… well technically cat cat but the repeat is a bit like adding “ito” to mean little in Spanish. It is adding endearment to the word.

I'm not sure if you're doing the entire show or just the first season, but there's 48 episodes in total and season 3 and a movie is coming out later this year so...if the 2 episodes per video thing continues it'll be like at least 2 years of Apothecary Diaries (not that I'm complaining)

I genuinely love Maomao and Jinshi’s dynamic because Maomao is extremely aware of how low ranking she is and usually tries to speak and act diplomatically towards people of higher rank…except for Jinshi, who she bullies mercilessly, often to his face lol

I love that danny is constantly trying to better himself, and not for others but for himself. I have always believed that life is a balance of loving youself as is and improvement, and in what way you think it is improvement. Nobody knows but you. I feel like a lot of people nowadays feel they need to remain a static image and I personally think that you should always strive for better. Not for what others see as better but what you yourself see as better. This applies to everything. I for one see no problem with Danny’s old content, I think most people realize it was played up for laughs— however, because he has decided that it isn’t the direction he wants to go in, I’m glad he’s actually going to do something about it. That being said, I hope Danny never falls into the trap of being disingenuous for other people’s sakes. Please always remain true to yourself, I for one find you extremely refreshing for being generally positive yes but also it never feels like you are faking it.
