I'm going to second someone else's comment and say I'd love for you to expand outside of Dreamworks/Disney into Don Bluth! Don Bluth animated movies, generally speaking, trend darker and with more mature themes than Disney movies. Before the Disney Renaissance his stuff was THE stuff, which is why so many of them got like a billion sequels. So genuinely, I'd love you to maybe pick like a month or something where you just switch tracks and watch Don Bluth films! As someone who grew up with this movie, but in Latin Spanish, watching it in English despite being fluent and now having lived in the US for about half my life, the English version feels subpar. this movie came out when I was 11 and I've loved the soundtrack ever since. Listened to it a lot more then any band or popular musician at the time. I still have the CD. Every now and then I'll play the whole soundtrack, songs and score.

Early Dreamworks animation was kinda wild. Adult characters in adult situations. Male lead characters. A lot of homages to films of the past. Also, during this period a lot of pop music stars from the 80's wrote animated movie soundtracks to stay relevant. Elton John did El Dorado, Bryan Adams did Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron, Phil Collins did Tarzan, and Sting did the soundtrack to Emperor's New Groove, even though those songs weren't even in the movie because of the change in direction. It was a wild and different time.

The sad thing about this movie is that they could have had a really good anti colonial film if they did have the high priest as the main villain. It's based on the book Candide by Voltaire (1759), a satire about the greed of colonists and their mindset of God, glory, and gold. Genuinely it's a shame that it didn't follow it more, but I have such nostalgia for it that I still love the movie

It's Tough to Be a God is the only song I seek out (there's a great cover by annapantsu that I love) but I always enjoy trail we blaze while I'm watching the movie. As much as I enjoy, this movie (the nostalgia and horniness always have me coming back) it leans heavily into colonization tropes that should be discussed. the bechdal cast has a great episode that breaks down the more problematic aspects of the movie.

I feel like the emperor knew that they were mortal, but thought that they would provide an excellent way to get rid of the thorn in his side aka the priest. That man was killing his people and he wanted him gone

Treasure Planet is such a secret treasure in itself. The lack of fame for that movie is crazy. <3 I hope you'll choose it someday. ;) Also, don't worry. Just because the songs are written by Elton John doesn't mean that you're not absolutely right about the songs of this movie and what makes some Disney more memorable. ;)

There's a million things to love about this movie, and the first one is the soundtrack!!! I do agree that for kids, it's not the best, but as an adult it's one of my favorites! Also if anyone's curious, youtuber Sideways has a vid about how songs in films NOT sung by the characters, but by a narator, effect your experience of the songs in the film. So it makes sens that "Tough to be a God" takes the top spot for you, but I love the soundtrack! I would always rewatch the credits to hear "Out of the Blue"

Like, Tzekel-Kan wanted to execute Chel at the beginning not because she stole a solid gold statue the size of a head, but because she picked a religious artifact for her theft.

As I understand it, the Chief had been at odds with the temple priests (or at least their faction) for a long time. So from his perspective, having "gods" who happened to share his views and could put the priests in their place with nothing more than some gold and a few chicks was actually a pretty good bargain. Whether they were real gods or not almost didn't matter. They were useful allies who could undermine the priesthood's authority without threatening his own position.

So at the end of the day he is thankful for the way Miguel and Tulio challenge him, how they taught the people that his word is not absolute, that lives are worth more than capital. It's a cartoon about dinosaurs from the early '90s that was a personal childhood classic of mine and I've been waiting for it to have its ironically appropriate come-back for YEARS. You will love it, I promise, it's so much fun, but also one of those "oh my god, this was for kids??" films. And for more "cartoon about adults being adults" goodness, because I valued those a lot as a kid too, Secret of N.I.M.H. is a MUST. It's so dang mature and so so good. '80s and '90s kids really got to enjoy peak entertainment.

ABSOLUTELY watch Sinbad! I haven't watched it in a while, but I remember really enjoying it (and possibly having an awakening, lol). Someone else also suggested Prince of Egypt, and I agree 100%. The music is FANTASTIC and there's bits of animation that still make my jaw drop to this day. It's one of those films that's considered a work of art even by people who aren't religious. I enjoy El Dorado a lot for the animation and writing, though I agree that the music is closer to a "normal" soundtrack instead of songs you'd get stuck in your head as a kid. I think the reason they didn't make Cortéz the main bad guy is that it'd be...a bit awkward and potentially disrespectful considering everything the real Cortéz did? Showing him in the film - especially at the end - added a dark tone considering all the death we know that garbage excuse for a human being brought with him.

Definitely down for Sinbad. Sinbad hugely underrated. But since Treasure Planet is my favorite movie of all time I gotta put my vote there.

two small notes 1) the ballgame was not mesopotamian, but mesoamerican and 2) the soundtrack was done by THE Elten John and Tim Rice (so it def should have been received better, but it kinda got lost to time and remained in cult classic territory)

Danny, please consider watching the following - totally underrated masterpieces from both Disney and Dreamworks: The Prince of Egypt, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Spirit, Sinbad & Hercules!

Only just watched this movie for this, it is as good as everyone said!

19:53 Part of it is def that Dreamworks (and Disney, too) had a precedent at this time of letting the voice actors record lines in the same booth together. So they'd play off each other & improv some of the script the same way they would in a live action production. (There's behind the scenes footage of Kevin Kline and Kenneth Brannagh doing one of Tulio & Miguel's scam performance scenes together in the booth.) I think this approach to the line-recording process is definitely a large part of why this was the golden era of the animated comedy film (like with Shrek, Madagascar, The Emperor's New Groove, even the first Zootopia). But studios started to reduce joint-recording sessions, like these, sometime in the mid-2010s & of course, it was impossible during covid. The fact that those same companies now usually insist on separate recording sessions during production (presumably for sound quality/take selection reasons), is a large part of why so many newer animated movies feel a bit sterile in the dialogue department, imo. Cuz they're saying the same line 5 different ways for the editors to pick from & splice with the takes of the other characters', instead of leaving them to perform the whole scene, naturally, with another actor...it's literally a more manufactured process now.

If we're talking sexual awakenings you have to watch Sinbad next. The goddess Eris is the definition of HOT

THE Dreamworks movie that matched (if not surpassed) Disney soundtracks of this era was Prince of Egypt.

I've heard this movie described as a DnD campaign made up of nothing but nat 1 and nat 20 and I love that interpretation

First, I kind of have an opinion about the music: For me personally, I think a song doesn't have to be catchy to be catchy. I think can either be catchy, or it can fit the scene. I remember all of the songs in this movie not because of the lyrics, but because they matched the emotion of what the scene was trying to convey. Like I can hear Miguel and Tulio searching the jungle for El Dorado. But that's just my two cents. Second: this is gonna be a very obscure rec, but if you haven't seen it already you should react to Antz. It's wild, and it has way too many famous actors in it😂

The prince of Egypt would be a good watch. The animation in that movie is so good, from what I heard they thought that The prince of Egypt would do better than Shrek so they would send the best animators over to The prince of Egypt.

My son's middle name is Miguel bc of this movie- I felt that Miguel's personality traits were what I wanted to see in my own son

Sorry Danny, but I was absolutely singing all of these songs on repeat as child between my family and friends! Elton John was awesome for writing the soundtrack for this film.

I had not seen this movie since I was a child, my god it's soo much better than I ever remembered it being. Though yes I think I agree with you about sound tracks making a film more memorable, this is solidly a 10/10 film with a 7/10 sound track. This film was not my sexual awakening though... I think that would go to Stith from Titan A.E. yea let's just move on for now.

Atlantis plz! It’s so fun and the writing is so good, all the characters feel like actual people and its’ an adult cast so that’s refreshing to me. <3

My favorite headcanon about this movie is that the armadillo is actually one of the gods, or that the actual gods are watching, and decided that yeah, it will be funny to have these two guys pretend to be us, lets see how long we can keep this going.

this was one of my fav movies when i was 7, and i actually liked the music so much that i had the soundtrack on cd and would get my dad to play it on the cd player in the garage (bc i didnt have a cd player yet) so i def loved the songs as a kid lol. u can also guess that i had the Tarzan soundtrack as well

Sinbad is very similar in tone and humour to road to el dorado, Kronks new groove is definitely more kids movie but still with that super fast witty dialogue from the first one, and Atlantis is somewhere in the middle

I think the reason the cheif played along with them is because he values his people and the high priest values fanatical sacrifice for their "brutal and violent" Gods as he claims. So when he's saw the chance to claim these guys were God's, it would either change the way the people viewed their Gods and they'd prioritize the lives of their people more OR they fuck up and get executed. Either way life goes on for him

I will say that the sacrifice thing was a big thing within some Mesoamerican indigenous cultures. There was a belief that this was the fifth iteration of the world and in order to stave off the end of it the gods required human blood to continue the fight. (This is a very brief summary of the mythology and might not be 100% accurate since it’s been a sec since I read up on Aztec, Mexica, or Mayan mythology but it’s really interesting and I def recommend looking into it more!)

So there is a thing that is referred to as "Disney Renaissance," but its basically a point in the 90s where Disney was about to slash the animation budget and the dedicated all the budget to the music of a film. Became wildly popular after the fact, def could be wrong about the times, but Sideways on YouTube speaks about it pretty good but its in his analysis of the Disney live actions, really good watch if you are fan of music theory.

Said this on the YouTube channel nkw saying it here but FUN FACT: while making the movie dreamworks loved el dorado so much that they green lit two sequels to this before it even hit theatrical release however it ended up flopping making them back track on those plans. So yeah it probably feels open ended because they thought there would be more lol

I think the reason why Cortéz isn't talk about that much (at least in Latinoamerica), it's probably cause most of us hate his guts lmao. He was an actual real life Spanish colonizer that practically decimated the Aztec empire. He lead the expedition that conquered, colonized, enslaved and killed many. We really don't have much appreciation for that mf.

OMG Kudos for a Rozencrantz & Guildenstern reference! No lie, Road to El Dorado, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Prince of Egypt (and I'm not religious) were some of the best animated movies. I wish someone would take up that style again.

I’m sure no one remembers this movie but I would DIE for your reaction to The Black Cauldron. It’s my favorite animated movie (I don’t know why) 🤣 and I’d love to see how you react to how dark it is.

Dreamworks is one of my top studios for their understanding that animation isn’t only for kids, but can be more mature! I miss the 2D Dreamworks era so much, Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron is my all-time favorite of theirs. It’s not as “adult” in form of content, but I love how it tackles more real-world themes, and the music is phenomenal, definitely up there with HTTYD’s soundtrack for me.

The deal here is that this was supposed to be the first of the road movies. And they were set up to be animated versions of the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby movies. There was a whole series of them in the 40s through the 60s. Like they literally just took the real movie and decided to animate it. At least in town there were other details that they wouldn't have been able to pull off in the 40s but there you go.

I'd love for Danny to watch at some point a Don Bluth animated film, I feel like there's some fantastic gems in there! Like Anastasia, Titan AE, Thumbelina, or An American Tail. I DO get though that it has to be a movie that would make decent content too, not JUST ones the audience would love. My other suggestion would be stop motion animated films by say Laika or Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio. There's some amazing films in that lineup! As for movies Danny listed, Atlantis is my choice! It's style is so unique, the voice acting is fantastic, and the characters and motivations are well written.
